    • @johnluis2358
      @johnluis2358 Год назад +2

      I have to judge a bit on the subject matter being all too close to reality. Good and evil are currently subjective terms. There has never and will never be an actual force for good or evil. When people are talking about some holy clash, it's usually either fiction or a rationalization for hurting people, so I don't really want to just let that slide. Are you referring to your religion or were you not speaking literally?

    • @stephenstevens6573
      @stephenstevens6573 Год назад

      @@johnluis2358 I don't speak figuratively. If you don't believe in the reality of good and evil, there is no reason to continue the conversation. If you do? Then you must admit that one of those purely subjective things will win out in the end. Throughout history, evil has gained more and more of a foothold in society. Are we better off as a result? You can leave theology out of it if you wish,but there will be a reckoning. I would like to think that good will be the stronger force, but I guess we will just have to wait and see. There is an awful lot of backlash beginning to form as we speak. We will have to wait and see what form it takes

    • @johnluis2358
      @johnluis2358 Год назад +1

      @@stephenstevens6573 I believe we could define an objective good. Evil is a lot harder due to circumstances. I would define good as caring for the well being of others. Specifically organisms capable of thought. Most people prefer to throw a vague god in the mix though. Adding a god makes good and evil subjective at best or fiction in most cases. I don't believe in an end or that good or evil can triumph or whatever. You say throughout history, evil got more of a foothold in society, yet slavery isn't widespread anymore and the genocides that religions around the world love so much don't happen to the same extent anymore. I'd argue the world has become objectively better as far as human well being is concerned. If you were to argue that the widespread cruelty enacted on every other species of animal cancels that out, you might have a point. I don't think most people would consider animals as anything more then food, fun, and property though, so you'll have to speak for yourself on that. Also, because I'm bad at communicating this through my arguments, I should make it clear that I genuinely enjoy this kind of discussion. Most people will just ignore me if it comes up though because they don't like potentially having beliefs challenged, so it's a rare treat. I'd love to continue.

    • @stephenstevens6573
      @stephenstevens6573 Год назад

      @@johnluis2358 I don't like to argue, John. People get upset, and start to name call and at that point I'm out. I never said I don't believe in God. I just find that with folks like you, I usually get dismissed outright. Now...good and evil...where do we start. You argue that slavery was an absolute evil. Ok. Point taken. And yet...slavery exists to this day in some parts of this world. China, Libya, some parts of the middle east and if you want to be honest...many, many people in this world are very little beyond wage slaves. So..is slavery evil? Yes. Take from that what you will. You mention religions as perpetrators of war and suffering. There have been times, such as the crusades and the inquisition where that was indeed so. Now...was the church complicit in those things? Yes...so...the church is evil, right? No...so many things are done in the name of religion, when most times, it is men doing evil in the name of the church, not the other way around. Evil, by it's very definition is the opposite of good. So...evil is very real..as man, in his hubris begins to consider himself a god(we hear it all the time) we are all gods, they say. I prefer to stay out of that one. If we were sitting down across from each other, this would be both easier and more enjoyable. When we look at our world, I see the very fabric of society being torn apart. There is civil unrest, rioting in the streets, unborn children being killed off in the millions, uncertain financial markets, wanton greed by large corporations, wars and rumors of wars, homelessness, hunger....I'm sorry, but I see all of those things as evil..the world is becoming a vastly more dangerous place. We need more good and less evil.

    • @johnluis2358
      @johnluis2358 Год назад +2

      @@stephenstevens6573 This has been difficult learning moments on what not to click on. Deleted my reply twice now by accident. Ok. One more try. I mean discussion when referring to arguing or arguments. I can just use the word discussion for arguing, but I don't know a better word to describe individual, or groups of, arguments. Name calling is often times the result of assumptions and insults, so even if I thought a name were an apt descriptor, I agree that it would be better to avoid name calling for the sake of a productive discussion. I don't recall saying you believed in a god, though if I implied that somewhere, you have my apologies. I'm not exactly great at writing, so I'm sure I screwed up somewhere. I find "folks like you" to be putting me directly in a box. If you're referring to a group, boxes are quite useful, though they amount to as much as name calling when addressing an individual. Never the less, I doubt you meant any harm by it, so I'll leave it at that and I'll try to be careful not to dismiss you outright. Now, while I did give slavery as an example of evil, I didn't say it was absolute evil. I would never be so arrogant as to assume something is always black and white, the classic example of grey area being self defense. I don't know of a good reason to own slaves, but I didn't live through all of history, so maybe there's some situation I don't know somewhere of it potentially at least being understandable for an individual case. I also didn't say bad stuff doesn't still happen, though I guess I used the word widespread, so I see how you would interpret it that way, so my apologies for that. I meant it isn't everywhere anymore. "Wage slaves", or indentured servants, at least have rights, however few, so I'd like to keep them distinct from actual slaves. Regarding religions, using the "people did it, not the organization" or something to that effect is a scapegoat. If they fund it, order it, or practice it widely throughout their organization, then the organization needs to be held responsible for it. For example, when I say Saint Jude's helps kids with cancer, I don't usually have to say, but people did that. Not Saint Jude's. Hopefully the different context clarifies that issue a little bit. So, religions did do that stuff. Killing atheists was also widely practiced until the whole freedom of religion thing got the spotlight. Civil unrest, rioting in the streets, etc. has always happened. Unborn children being killed on that scale is more recent I think and is still a matter of debate about whether or not it's bad, but I feel it gets us off topic right now and I at least think it isn't always right, so I'll grant that it's bad for the sake of the current discussion. Point being, the bad stuff happening has either always happened and isn't unusual or is significantly reduced with the only exception being what's done to animals. I think it would be a bit funner in person as well, though I'm not great at spoken language, so I'd have a hard time getting points across that fast. I work a lot better with animals then humans for that reason too.

Again, this is another great story you have told, and I'm glad to continue supporting you for as long as I can. Road to 1 million (can't wait to see it, from 148k subs).

The Dark Somnium. I understand he can't upload daily. I know why, it's important to keep top notch quality. However you can NEVER get enough of the channel. Iv seen 95% or more of the content on this channel. Was never disappointed. Definitely buy some of his merch too. It's awesome.

Just waiting on one along the lines of “ my grandfather fought in the final war and I found his journals and war trophies” really want one from the perspective of a soldier on the ground joining forces with their sworn enemies to fight zombies and demons. The snippet from the lecture story left me craving more
