WHY NOBODY WANTS TO BE A MECHANIC IN 2024

  • Why does nobody want to be a car mechanic anymore? The truth lies in the tough working conditions and the increasing complexity of modern vehicles. With rapidly advancing technology, mechanics face complicated systems that often lack proper technical support from manufacturers. The physical demands are also brutal-long hours spent in uncomfortable positions, dealing with heavy parts, and repetitive motions that take a serious toll on the body. Combine that with low wages and it’s no wonder this career is becoming less appealing.

    I was a BMW Master Tech with 48 years with BMW. They were great to work on back in the day. Watching this brought back memories of my last few years. The flat rate times on battery repairs and hybrid/EVs were unrealistic not to mention the stress from management wanting everything done yesterday! Managers and controllers that haven’t worked on a modern car having no clue! I don’t miss it😂

      Hello Harold. Nice to hear those comments. I had a case recently where Bmw Nordic tech support didnt even bother to answer me. You can read about it in PMM magazine when it comes out.

    Nothing much has changed has it. I remember trying to replace an exhaust manifold gasket on my Mum’s Citroen DS, I was literally crying with frustration, hands bleeding and sore. I’m a landscaper now, much less frustrating, whole body is sore now though 🤣

    I’m not a mechanic,but my thoughts on this are fairly simple. Ok I’m seventy one so call me a boring old bugger if you wish. In my mind,a large part of the problem is the ridiculous consumer society we live in. So many people ,mainly men I should imagine, just want more and more gizmos to impress their friends ,so the manufacturers fall in line and fill today’s cars with so much stuff that’s not needed.
    Why not take all the truly good advancements in motor vehicle technology,ie brakes, stiff body shells,and very good rust proofing ,and from this base,build a simple,reliable ,repairable,functioning car . Remember the speed limit is seventy,and for me,quite fast enough,so why is it now possible to buy a hugely powered car that will do seventy in first gear,oh and you can probably adjust your central heating at home while doing it. Absolute madness in a world of limited and shrinking resources.

    Experienced mechanics should be involved in the design. Simplicity means more reliability, something these modern designs fail to address. I reckon the owners would put reliability at the top of what they want . 👍

    Make the car simple to work on reliable cheap to own and run. What is hard about that but we all know who runs things in car manufacturer the Bean counters. Henry Ford showed the way and was rewarded for it.

      not "badly engineered"......this engineering is not an accident......it's the ultimate in planned obsolescence......they don't want these cars repaired.....they want them thrown away and a new one bought.....this is criminal......and all makes are the same.....been wrenching for 50 years.......everyday trans does not have to be like this.....the car makers have a license to steal.......and are very good at it.....

    I’m a Toyota tech and luckily haven’t seen too many issues with our hybrids, have replaced a few engines due to PCM failures leaving injectors stuck open and bending rods, but my cousin is a tech with BMW and looks like a nightmare , between the hybrids blowing head gaskets to removing entire interiors to change wiring looms 😳

    As someone who worked as a mechanic in the mid to late 1960s working on Minis & Austin 1100s, being some of the first front wheel drive cars with transverse engines, they came as hard work compared to the likes of rear wheel drive Escorts & Cortinas with loads of room under the bonnet! So I really feel for anyone having to struggle with today's totally overcomplicated cars, especially in hybrid form with so much now crammed in under the bonnet, although the hybrid aspect is pretty pointless really isn't it as it still involves mainly an ICE, which of course we shouldn’t still be using so long after it was first invented in the late 1800s! However fully electric cars aren’t the answer unless everyone can charge them at home, which of course is not feasible.

    Give me a Rover 75 to fix any day 😅.
    Simple , only 12 electronic modules in total.
    All easy to access apart from SRS DCU which rarely gives any trouble.
    We've specialised in these since the demise of MGR in 2005.
    Only need one set of simple tools.
    Parts are cheap
    Our own 2003 Tourer has 210k miles still going strong , 50mpg
    Happy days 😊

    When it finally comes where people refuse to be techs, they will be forced to make some drastic workplace changes, which can start with an easier to wok on cars. Manufacturing techs all need to unionize.

    I still drive and work on Ford trucks and full size cars like the Crown Victoria from the 1980's. I've got so much room under the hood I end up using a 1/2 inch ratchet most of the time. A child or a midget could put their feet on the frame next to the I6 motor in my 88 F150 and fit underneath with the hood closed. The more I see these complicated bits on new vehicles, the more I see how crammed in they are, the more I see people tearing half a car apart to get at a single screw or bolt, the more I want to keep my old fleet of junk.

    I worked on a E39 525D, was so easy to work on "today".
    But, back when it was fairly new, i thought it was cramped to work around and complicated.

  • @ebutuoyYT
    @ebutuoyYT 7 дней назад +2

    Plug-in hybrid is the worst, the added complexity of the battery, power electronics and electric motors, stuffed into a car, alongside a full internal combustion engine and all its ancillaries.
    Full electric vehicles should be in theory be more simple to work on, trouble is many of their parts will be heavily protected and to get to stuff will require a lot of removing of items, hopefully major components will be more reliable than most ICE parts.
    I think automotive engineers should be forced to spend a week doing maintenance tasks on the car they are designing, with better planning at the design stage, life could be made easier for the mechanics!

    • @allmech_BMW_fault_finding
      @allmech_BMW_fault_finding  11 дней назад +3

      Hi pal. Not sure. There are actually 3 separate harnesses on this all intertwined with each other. I would never own a hybrid G01 if only due to the complexity and tightly packed wiring and components.

    I get a work order on a Lexus says "Runs poorly and CEL on 1 hour diag".I pull a P0340 or P0341 but by the book it says "remove cam solenoids and test or replace" It is 1.1 hours to R&R the solenoids no testing.Step #2 if solenoids okay removed and inspect crank sensor.The crank sensor is .9 hours to R&R. Step #3 If crank sensor okay remove and inspect camshaft position sensor.Cam position sensor R&R pays 1.1 hours.BY THE FUCKING BOOK IT IS 3.1 HOURS JUST TO REMOVE AND REPLACE THESE SOLENOIDS AND SENSORS.THAT BUSINESS IS FUCKING RETARDED!
