Those were one of the first versions of the hl2 beta maps, as you saw they weren't perfect, they were just tests on the maps, for example guard_alyx_script2 was supposed to be a test for the beta Nova Prospekt map supposed to be shown at e3 2003 where at the end you would have a boss fight with the ant guard breaking the door, this is what i have from the leaks , files and versions i gathered.
it wasn't used i nthe final game, and john and youtuber are right its literally a russian space mission of them burning in the atmosphere, 2 people caught the recordings back in the 1960s
On 50antlions, you can hit the antlions with your crowbar to cycle through the different antlion animations. The first few hits do nothing, but it'll work.
For context (though a bit too late): - Hazard map was an experiment to make something similar to Hazard course in HL1. There are several different versions of it. There is also an alternate version of the course shown in the video, where surroundings randomly switches between normal and ruined versions of laboratory. It's impossible to see it in the normal leak without fixing the map. It seems originally HL2 should have been much more creepier than the final game; - Second video is a remake of Hazard course from HL1. Apparently, before designing new maps, Valve has remade some of the HL1 maps for the new engine. Or probably this was some kind of work for the HL: Source; - Third map is a test for one of the E3 maps; - Boxing is one of the "fun" maps, which devs made for...well...fun. There is, also, infamous "ickypoop" map. And there is another version of boxing map with more stuff near the arena; - E3_Gurluas - is a fan map, made by Russians, which explains presence of the Combine Assassin, which was not used anywhere, except for some test maps, and Zombie Assassin model, an enemy, which was cut even before his model was properly finished (and it doesn't have any animations or AI). Zombie Assassin was supposed to be a zombified version of another enemy called Alien Assassin, which was cut very early in the game (circa 2001) and was not properly finished (it lacks a lot of animations and its AI is not completed). Alien Assassin's AI was later used for Fast Zombies and idea of zombified Combine enemy was reused for Zombines in Episode 1. Trivia / specualtion: even though Valve removed Alien Assassin, they didn't want to completely drop idea of fast Combine unit, so they have created Combine (Female) Assassin, based on the Black-Ops Assassins for the first Half Life. When they introduced Combine Assassin in the game, they reused the old ID of an Alien Assassin. So, that's why her model called "fassassin", but her ID is an "assassin" - a rare case, when ID and the designation of the character model don't match. Also, it means, that's in all instances where Alien Assassin had appeared on the old maps, he was replaced by Combine Assassin. Though, it wouldn't mean that you could see Alien Assassin in the leak anyway: his model was dropped so early, that it was not supported by Half Life 2 engine, when it was leaked. So, even if you could summon his model, you most likely wouldn't be able to see anything or maybe you could see only typical red ERROR model; - last map in the video is just a test for a screen technology, which was used for Breencasts and TVs in the final game.
e3_Gurluas is not made by russians, but russians took it. It was originally intended for a Hl2world mappack for the leak. I know this as I made the map when I was like 13.
Mark Laidlaw answered me about this map: "The short answer is that I just made this for fun, as an experiment, but always in the hope that if I could figure out how to do something cool then a real level designer could it right. This was a crazy idea that never fit into a game anywhere. I was to build a sequence where you see behind the scenes of reality-so, you’re seeing a simulation and something breaks you out of it, and you see this weird lab setting (which may also be a simulation), until the G-Man notices you and sends you back into your dream. The idea was that this would be part of the HL2 training course, as I recall, but we ended up not doing a training course for HL2…so that was one reason it never went any further than this. We were doing G-Man sessions at the time so I had Mike Shapiro record some lines expressly for this. I ended up using some bits and pieces of this when I put together the short “Psycho” demo that was part of the E3 movies we eventually showed the public…I took some of the underlying pieces of this map and reworked them into that demo. Basically I was just trying to make stuff that was weird and surreal. I enjoyed playing with Hammer. The other ruined pieces were a related experiment that branched off the first one. In these, I had someone make an oscillating timer entity, then built two versions of the same environment-one new, one ruined. Then I used a pair of teleports hooked to the oscillator, so that you would flip between the environments, slowly at first, then fast enough to make them flicker and blur (I think that’s the reason for FLICK in HAZFLICK.vmf), until you were finally deposited in the run-down version. Again, the idea was that you were seeing behind the scenes…so you were actually in a ruined environment but you’re being deluded into seeing it as if it’s whole. There was never any more to it than that, and it obviously never turned into anything that affected the story. But I think that oscillator might still be around as a useful entity for other things. I also did a much longer chunk of early gameplay where you’re moving through steam tunnels, listening to someone whistling up ahead, and when you get to him, manhacks attack and the covers blow off the pipes and you follow some tunnels through to a place where stalkers fire at you. I worked on that one for a long time, but I’m not sure if that one leaked, and if it did, I’m quite sure it was broken. I got tired up rebuilding and updating these maps every time the code changed, so eventually I tired of them and let them rot. Also, since I was not a really accomplished level designer, they kind of suck. But they were fun to make. "
Hazard01 is a map actually created by Marc Laidlaw. It was suppost to be a thing which was gonna be a twist on the original hazard course, then it's pretty much Gordon's mind with the past coming through like a nightmare with Gman taking over. Although they had no idea what to make of it later in the story on so it was scrapped. But is it presumed to be a flashback.
The boxing one could have probably been used to test an NPC’s ability to attack another NPC. The Antlion map was probably to test the Antlion’s AI and its blitz attack. Hazardous was probably used to test different scenarios, or it could have been a quickly scrapped version of the half-life 1 map. e3 Gurluas was to test the Striders AI and its charge attack. Intervu could maybe been to test render targeting, similar to Breen’s speech billboard in the train station of half life 2.
Its like a transition from the original half life, to half life 2, interesting, the graphics and world animations are half life 1 inspired while object physics are half life 2 based, this also answers your question about the doors, that was normal for half life 1
I think that what was going on with the first map is that they were trying to recreate something like the training course in Half-Life 1 but more meant for Half-Life 2 and so they wanted it to be a bit more special and interesting.
Barney: Sorry sir, you know I can't let you through here without your good friend, Superfly Johnson. (Giggles) Just kiddin', Gordon. You go on through! (Laughs). Gordon: You scare me.
Probably these maps were created to test the Source engine when it comes to various scripts and events. These were maps that were create 2 or even 3 years before 2004, when HL2 retail version was released. For example the guard_alyx_script2 looks like the Antlion guard fights from Nova Prospekt. Interesting though to take a look at these.
Being the one who made the map, I concur. xD Still funny to see it played like this. The map little 13 year old me made to showcase cool models and enemies not found elsewhere in the leak. xD Then the Russians took it and repackaged it as part of their leak.
First of all all these maps are used in hl2 beta which didn't make it to the final version and all of these were used to be tested npcs movements animations buttons and etc and those are all from beta that got leaked that never made it. also the intro music you are hearing in the video is called Half-Life [Music] - Hard Technology Rock you're welcome.
I think the first one was supposed to be a hazard course. To teach the player about shooting. The 2nd was probably them trying to port goldsrc maps to source
I'd love to see an update video using the latest missing information and leak net patches so see the maps working more inline with how they were meant to be

And boxing (4:17) was a test of a entity i forgot the name of, that basically can turn foes to friends, friends to foe, or make anyone neutral. :3

so you are not supposed to be here
That weird noise around 1:40 is some weird Citadel Ambience from the beta. Freaky shit, makes you wonder what the Combine were doing...
its called *trans6LP* its a citizen turning into a strider and got stucked at the level 2 and screaming for help in the cave
You mean Stalker
According to some info, this sound is a caught transmission of the Soviet austronaut(s), long story.
And year later i should say it has burned in the atmosphere during secret mission
it wasn't used i nthe final game, and john and youtuber are right its literally a russian space mission of them burning in the atmosphere, 2 people caught the recordings back in the 1960s

Jolly wanker title much?
Isaacfess Yeah, I'm not very original
that doesnt matter the world needs more people like him.
Thas ok
Also, beta maps are sometimes strange
it's like The Jolly Wanker with different font for texts.

I already knew about this. Because I know everything ;)
Same with Alyx in one of the e3_testroom maps which later went by the name testroom_standards
In the final map of half life 2 you can find the advisor and do the same thing
Theres also a map called 50assassains that's just the exact same thing except with assassins
For context (though a bit too late):

weird beta maps = all beta maps
well many of theme were made with test purpose or just when the devs where bored.

I heard "hey what's going on in there ingredients e"
The Superfly Johnson reference was hilarious. Too bad it wasn't in the final game.
Sorry sir, you know I can't let you through here without your good friend Superfy Johnson!
at 1:21 it said "whats going on in there? look at these readings! they seem to be..."
I hope I never hear Barney say something as weird as that unused voice line again. Barney was WEIRD in the beta.
It wasn't unused or part of Barney's voice lines, it was a developer joke.
I think that the first one is a training thing perhaps
that thing near the end is a Zombie Assassin a zombie version of the alien Assassin
Zombie Assassin That No AI, Not Ragdoll, No NPC, Because Prop
The first one was half used for the train tunmel easter egg in the HL2RP map Industrial 17.
Love your intro, Freeman’s mind is great.

thing i dont know why
Probably just valve having fun and tests.

Actually the ZOMBIE assassin is in the final game, just replaced with the fast zombie.

That Daikatana reference got me.
Dr Kliener saying "What's going on in there Lookit the readings." Hmmm
5:58
listen to the combine
"oh shit"
My guess it that the first one was a training mode but Freeman is really In stasis during it
I think the first one was supposed to be a hazard course. To teach the player about shooting. The 2nd was probably them trying to port goldsrc maps to source
I'd love to see an update video using the latest missing information and leak net patches

It's not as good to watch when it's not the true beta experience™
I looked it up, and "Superfly Johnson" is one of the main characters from the game Daikatana.
Most of these seem like tests for the NPCs and the Source engine (as Source was originally made for half life 2).
Also, I'm guessing boxing was a test for the team system. After all, it was two zombies so the same npc.
I like the moment at 12:03 so funny haha
Uhh dude the intervu did not lie, its gman and kleiner interviewing eachother
3:22 Defenatly it is reference to Daikatana. And ...this is weired.
*WITHOUT YOUR GOOD FRIEND, SUPER-FLY JOHNSON.*
If you would understand that creepy noise in the hallway next to Gman, it would be a lot more creepier.
THAT DAIKATANA REFERENCE HAVE LITERALLY BLASTED ME WITH SHIT RIGHT IN THE HEAD
I don't know why a Training Map in Half-Life 2 but... The boxing map is simply a joke map for developers
1:20 "Now No Look At The Reading It Seems To Be..."

so i love this channel...
