I'd be curious what prices on Z4M's there are now. They've been flying up in the States...average price for a nice one up to 70K miles is about $27,000, there's a few around 125K-150K asking $20,000ish. And low miles? Crazy. Currently one (in white! Ugh!) with 14K miles listed at $59,000. Highly doubt they'll get it but probably pretty close. Your investment advice was spot on, Joel!
Amazing cars, built to be driven hard and fast using all the rpm's...only thing is it does lack torque. Great video mate would love to see a video review of a e85/e86 3.0si which is in-between the 3.0i and M car considering it had 265bhp. Also a review of a 2.5si would be even more interesting.

Great video. Thanks Joel. I agree with your points. They don't make them like this anymore and I don't think there is anything really like it for the price / you have to pay a lot more for anything similar, let alone better. As it happens, I had to put this to the test 4 years ago. I had a Z4MR that had a small crash :-( I took the opportunity to consider an upgrade and couldn't find anything I would consider without getting into a much bigger budget, so I replaced my Z4MR with ... a Z4MR. 2 years with the first. 4 years with the second. I had the traction control light flashing in 3rd gear at 4000 rpm. Prices in Canada are very high for roadsters, Coupes are even higher. Get yours soon before they're out of reach. Loved the review Joel.

After owning 3.0Si Coupes for over 5 years I finally bought a Z4MC last December and just love it! But you need to go into M ownership understanding that there can be some major running costs if your car needs an Inspection service or new bearing shells. Mine has had both but now I know it is at its best and it is just fantastic. 3.0Si is a great car and costs way less to run, but there is just something so special about the M. If you are thinking of buying either doing some research on Z4 dedicated forums (like z4forum) will be time well spent. Anyway a great video as always Joel, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with your 240i!

Thanks for the video, I did look at a lot of videos including this, you helped me do that l did buy one - a Z4M. Hi Joel, i’ve been an avid watcher from the start and you just get better. I don’t have a Z4 but a E46 convertible, because i need the extra room. Same 3 litre engine but spent loads on it, all engine faults sorted, all the leather has been renewed, wheels re-coated, Apple play stereo etc. I love the car. But i can’t warrant getting the M3, ok i get it for some but i had an E class AMG and just because it was the AMG the parts went through the roof, so i can see the same with the M3 or Z4M. I am very happy with the 3 litre for now, but i do think the M series are well over priced. I could get an SL 5 litre V8 for a fraction of the price of an M series. Take care
I'm just about to push the button one of these to carry on my love affair with the S54 - Already own a E46 M3 and a E85 Z4 2.0l Sport but I just love these things 😬
You need to drive an 01-02 Z3M roadster with the S54. I have one. Much more raw experience I’m told versus the Z4 variant. Curious as to what you think about the final drive in these cars. They’re very tall, but I find most bimmers are.
Check the LHD cars in Germany f.e. You Will see that the price in general is dubbel the price. The engine is very similar to the engine of the McLaren F1 12 cylinder. So let’s say it’s a bargain. Check it on the internet. You will find places where the similarities and the differences between these two engines are explained.
A dream car. Right hand drive makes the cars affordable in the UK. British RHD used cars are very cheap in Germany. You can hardly sell them anywhere else but Great Britain. A nice left hand drive one would set me back 40-50.000,- Euros in Germany. I will have to stick to my 3.0 for now I am afraid :-/. But some day....
In Germany for that money you can get a Corvette, which is faster in any way or a Boxster S. But Z4m is an amazing looking car with an amazing engine. For 20k€ I would take one without doubts...
Have you driven a Corvette ?? They don't go round corners very well .. ok in usa straight roads, but not in England , plus they only do about 12mpg . Boxster - they just look awful imo . They handle lovely, but looks mean a lot of course.
hammers kev I own a Corvette C6 and a Z4 :-) Z4 is my daily driver also in winter with the hardtop. Every of them is great and depends on individual needs. Corvette is way faster everywhere! People speaking about bad suspension mostly have never driven one. European models have also several improvements to US models, like better suspension, brakes, cooling etc. The running costs are also similar. Consumption of S54 is also nearly similar to LS3 but servicing costs are higher for S54. Would like to have 981 Boxster GTS for daily instead of Z4, but actually they are to expensive.
@@sniperBOBAH Just scrolling through history not looking to comment, but for anybody who might follow, my consumption experience is interesting. Holden SSV Redline/Chevy SS LS3 auto last tank 16.5 mpg, Z4M C S54 last tank 28.5 mpg. Both get worked pretty hard. (Both sound great. S54 with Eventuri is mechanical music to the ears, but the LS3 V8 rumble is pure excitement to passengers who aren't even into cars.
I remember you mentioned that in one of your videos, and that unless you really pushed it it wasn't good to drive. What didn't you like about it? My father had the m Coupe for 2 years and hated it, but I've Test driven a few and loved it. Are they not good daily drivers? What exactly bothered you about it?
@@andrewhanna9663 Horrible daily driver. Cramped cockpit. Bad steering. Couldn't pull away easily, gearbox in first and second was awful. Very stiff ride too
Really good video Joel, somehow missed it when it was first posted. I own a Z4MC and most of the criticisms levelled at it can be sorted. Some say the cabin is cramped, cant do much about that but I find it has loads of space, and it is a 2 seat sports car! I've fitted Bilstein B12's and the body control is transformed, Gruppe M induction makes the noise even better, and my most recent mod Vibratech engine mounts. Along with ZHP gear stick these have sorted the gear change, no occasional awkward 1st to 2nd changes now. The only point I'd make from your video is that I think a good Z4MR would be more than £12k and a good Z4MC would be more than £15k, add £4-£5k to that mate. 😁👍
Hi Joel I’m seriously considering a Z4M but am I just wondering whether the lack of a fixed roof in the roadster makes it less enjoyable (precise) compared to the coupe?
Differences between the Roadster and coupe dynamically are so minimal that you’re very unlikely to notice unless you’re driving it on the limit all the time!
i own a black z4 2.5i 192 hp since 11 years, meanwhile 230000 km. you've got a car but with black headlights like mine would look much better...smile..keep in mind this car is build in us and the weakpoints are the roof hydraulic pump, headlights with xenon ( mine were already exchanged twice), rear suspension and others! no cheap car in terms of maintenance, average 7.5 liters/100km is awesome, driving on highway around 6.5 l/100km with speed over 210km/h is absolutly unbelievable. my top speed is approx 260km/h, german boarder just 20km away..smile..have fun with this great looking car! best wishes from switzerland
Hey man looking in the market to get a new car and i came across the z4. Just got a question, is there a way to have bluetooth for the stereo? Or any other way to connect my phone to the stereo system of the z4. Im not a car guy at all so might be a dumb question
i've got an aftermarket bluetooth device, which is connected through the cd-changer interface. So i can keep the factory head-unit. (aftermarket units all look like alien spaceships IMO). I think the brand of my bluetooth devices might be "connects2"
Another gooden mate. However, it does leave me thinking, is the Z4M (around 12 to 15k for a good 1) really that much more of a car than the Z4 3.0 being only around 4.5k for a good 1?
The common answer is they say the 3.0 is about 75% of the performance at about 50% of the price. I think it's both a right and wrong answer, as there is a lot that feels different between a 3.0 and an M. The S54 dominates the car, but the steering and LSD , mixed with the different suspension makes it feel a totally different package than a 3.0 However, running costs on my Z4M are eye watering and when Joel and I were chatting about our cars when he collected and dropped my car off, I was stunned at how much better his 3.0 was on fuel. I am lucky to get mid to high 20's MPG , where Joel can hit the mid 30's without breaking a sweat. That soon adds up to a lot of money in petrol alone. I only use 99RON (typically Momentum) fuel, which is a habit left over from my Impreza P1 owning days. Car tax is a bastard, it's over £600 a year in road duty, where as the Alpina Roadster and 3.0 is a fraction of that. The Alpina makes a bit more sense and looks just as nice as the M (I prefer the Alpina and it's MY car in this video lol) and prices are about the same, but the 3.4 engine is more drivable (it's based on the E36 M3 engine). The S54 needs to really revved to redline to get the most out of it as it's not a torquey engine tbh.
Good question Tim and a tricky one to answer. Totally agree with Dan's points in that, it is a completely different car all together, so it's more than an upgrade. The performance alone probably isn't worth the extra money for example, however the whole package does make it a bargain at those prices.
It's a bit like a bigger and more refined version of one. I use to own a Mk-1 MX-5 and it's my Z4M in the video and they are hints of what Mazda started in the Z4M.

Fantastic video Joel. Do you know what’s the official name of that blue colour? I’m thinking of changing my Z4’s light gray. Thank you!
I'm back again! Awesome video lad, very informative
Epic video mate!
Thanks Luke
happy to hear since I've been having second doubts on my z4m :)
Nice video! What colour is the car?Is it Monacoblue or Carbonblack?
You need to drive an 01-02 Z3M roadster with the S54. I have one. Much more raw experience I’m told versus the Z4 variant. Curious as to what you think about the final drive in these cars. They’re very tall, but I find most bimmers are.
I drove a Z3M Coupe, much cooler car, almost retro but not as satisfying to drive
The S50 was basically half of the V12 in the F1, so some of that DNA made it to the S54?
Would you recommend a private seller or dealer?
A dream car. Right hand drive makes the cars affordable in the UK. British RHD used cars are very cheap in Germany. You can hardly sell them anywhere else but Great Britain. A nice left hand drive one would set me back 40-50.000,- Euros in Germany. I will have to stick to my 3.0 for now I am afraid :-/. But some day....
it's unbelievable how much the prices fluctuate between markets!
Only 1.425 LHD Z4M have been produced for Europe, God knows how many of them still alive for such a fast car.
They handle lovely,
but looks mean a lot of course.
hammers kev I own a Corvette C6 and a Z4 :-)
Z4 is my daily driver also in winter with the hardtop.
You could be the replacement to May, Hammond and Clarkson. Make Top Gear Great Again!!!
For about the same price, would you prefer an M roadster or an SI Coupe? This is my current dilemma.
I think I'd choose the M
It's hard not to smile at all times when behind the wheel of a Z4...!
The Z4MC is the best and worst car I ever owned
I remember you mentioned that in one of your videos, and that unless you really pushed it it wasn't good to drive. What didn't you like about it? My father had the m Coupe for 2 years and hated it, but I've Test driven a few and loved it. Are they not good daily drivers? What exactly bothered you about it?
@@andrewhanna9663 Horrible daily driver. Cramped cockpit. Bad steering. Couldn't pull away easily, gearbox in first and second was awful. Very stiff ride too
I think after having my standard Z4, I would struggle to daily one of the Ms. Only way I could have one is if it was bought solely for ragging!
Had mine for 4 years and loved it. Even as a daily. Although on long journeys it got a bit too much in terms of it’s comfort.
Great review!
Here in Switzerland Z4 M quotes around 40K CHF ....
Same on the Netherlands...
And Germany....
@@macstone9719 Yes they aren't cheap it all
i own a black z4 2.5i 192 hp since 11 years, meanwhile 230000 km. you've got a car but with black headlights like mine would look much better...smile..keep in mind this car is build in us and the weakpoints are the roof hydraulic pump, headlights with xenon ( mine were already exchanged twice), rear suspension and others! no cheap car in terms of maintenance, average 7.5 liters/100km is awesome, driving on highway around 6.5 l/100km with speed over 210km/h is absolutly unbelievable. my top speed is approx 260km/h, german boarder just 20km away..smile..have fun with this great looking car! best wishes from switzerland
@@isonic9479 That's great, I know about the roof system, the headlights are new for me.
I'm gonna get this one!
Hey man looking in the market to get a new car and i came across the z4. Just got a question, is there a way to have bluetooth for the stereo? Or any other way to connect my phone to the stereo system of the z4. Im not a car guy at all so might be a dumb question
Yes you can get an aftermarket Bluetooth unit. Many people add one to their Z4.
i've got an aftermarket bluetooth device, which is connected through the cd-changer interface. So i can keep the factory head-unit. (aftermarket units all look like alien spaceships IMO). I think the brand of my bluetooth devices might be "connects2"
Yep, I've got bluetooth in mine thanks to an aftermarket stereo
I did !
Joel
I have a BMW z4 the motor has died. Did you do a video with a the motor replacement on yours. The motor was relocated. Am I right.
Motor for the roof*******
Beautiful car, however the high maintenance cost scare me subdue I’m retired now great videos however.
Buy one but dont use it as your daily driver.
Got mine 3 days ago!
The S54 dominates the car, but the steering and LSD , mixed with the different suspension makes it feel a totally different package than a 3.0
However, running costs on my Z4M are eye watering and when Joel and I were chatting about our cars when he collected and dropped my car off, I was stunned at how much better his 3.0 was on fuel.
I just bought my z4m 2 weeks ago
damn;-) Have this engine in e46 M3 and now looking for Z4 30i.. I just might change my mind:-D
Beautiful machine 😍
Fantastic video about a fantastic car.
Great video Joel! Love the Z4M!
It's so great!
Selling my Miata for one. Just looking for the right one.
That’ll be amazing!
It's Joel oh definitely. That S54 sounds magnificent.
Magnífico video como todos.
Does the Z4M have auto rev match?
No sir
When 3.0 si coupe video?
is it 340 bhp or 343bhp stock?
think it's 338bhp stock to be specific
How comparable is it to the Mx5
It's a bit like a bigger and more refined version of one. I use to own a Mk-1 MX-5 and it's my Z4M in the video and they are hints of what Mazda started in the Z4M.
better. in every single way
I love manuals
Sublime! 😍
One day,...
🔥
Great videp
thank you
Road tax 😞
most performance cars are 280-555 now
Lee Ban no they aren’t
They are £145
I’m the first !!!!!!!
