  • BMW's Z4M offers a compelling proposition - a legendary, high-revving, 338BHP S54B32 straight six, a 6-speed manual gearbox (the only gearbox offered on the Z4M) and a rear-wheel-drive layout with a mechanical limited slip diff nestled between the driveshafts.
    Exciting, driver focused and really rather quick, the Z4M makes for a brilliant second hand purchase. Favourable market conditions in the UK mean they compete with E46 M3s on price, whilst offering a faster, more exclusive and more modern package overall.
    With the oldest examples now 18 years old, its important you pick the right one when purchasing. We hand-pick the best examples to advertise on shootingbrake.com, but if you aren't lucky enough to find one on our website you can watch this video to help navigate the market.

    Absolutely stunning car, just like the modern M3 & M4 people reeled back in horror when it was first unveiled because it was unlike anything they’d never seen before, then it had it’s marmite period where it’s looks split opinion and then suddenly it dawns on you that the design team were 100% spot on!

    Nice concise guide. I am on my second E85 although in 3.0si variation (which is probably 80% of the car of the Z4M but around 35% of the cost!) and as a chassis they are grossly underrated, very light, and in coupe form tight and chuckable. PS, just a little feedback, but holding your hands up in front of you whilst talking all the time is very distracting!

    Great car, went for an E46 M3 instead of this back in the day but I'll have to admit, maybe I should have gone for one as well. Despite its marmite looks (I like it), at least the E86M isn't trying to dismantle itself like the E46 M3.

    • @shootingbrake
      @shootingbrake  3 месяца назад +1

      Hard to split the two! I think it comes down to subjective preference on looks and also practicality. Both are great options. Z4M is arguably an easier buy these days despite being rarer due to lack of bodywork issues.

    was interested in that airbox but even with MAF the box and air tunnel is way bigger than default so doesn't it then need a remap anyways ? MAF not in same spot and amount of air bigger than stock messing up the mixture, not ? Leaning it out, burning valves. Or is the mixture auto-corrected via lambda sensors in the exhaust ? Even if, that seems retro-active fix and for optimal mixture stock MAF-airbox seems best (but yeah, the carbon sound is tempting)

    Good review, but you're somewhat out on the pricing. Z4MC prices higher than E46 M3 which they should be as much rarer, faster with lighter weight, much more rigid, more collectable and has some useful bits from M3 CSL Good low mileage examples can be near £30k and they will likely go up in value over time.
    ..

    • @shootingbrake
      @shootingbrake  Месяц назад

      We've been seeing price parity within £2-3,000 on examples with similar mileages, service history and spec. Both the E46 M3 and Z4M coupe have high top end prices for the best examples. Z4Ms are almost certainly due an upward price correction in future owing to their rarity however.

    Great review, but surprised you said the gearbox is smooth....IMO it's one of the worst, notchy manual boxes BMW have made and a real shame for that gem of an engine. Mine had a new gearbox put in it, and it was pretty much just as bad as the previous one. Compare it to a Boxster manual and it's worse in pretty much every way.

    • @shootingbrake
      @shootingbrake  3 месяца назад +2

      Interesting! I've driven two and thought they were both very smooth and slick. Like all BMW gearboxes the shift quality can rapidly deteriorate as the bushings wear. I agree it is not as good as the Boxster manual but I found it was a decent companion for enthusiastic driving.

    • @nickwilliams7490
      @nickwilliams7490 2 месяца назад +1

      Interesting.. I think the issue with Z4M gearbox is not the actual gearbox shift itself but the CDV clutch delay valve. This spoils the change particularly from 1st-2nd and many owners remove them. My view, owning a Z4MC for 16-years and having owned a Cayman S 987.2 and 911 C2S 997.1 which were bought to replace the Z4MC but sold so I could keep the Z4M is that the Z4M gearbox is nicer to shift as it doesn't have the woolly cable shift but a proper linkage. When really moving at higher RPM the CDV actually works quite well...
