Porsche 911 Carrera 4S (996 Tiptronic): Opulent City Cruiser. Shooting Brake's Mini Road Review

BMW E46 M3 CS: The Golden Child. Shooting Brake's UK road review

If you wanted the fastest, lightest, sharpest E46 M3 for the road, you had to buy the GTR, with its motorsports purebred P60 V8. Except you couldn't, because BMW wouldn't sell you one. So instead, you could buy the CSL, which had a track focus and a pared back interior - unless, of course, you wanted a manual. BMW wouldn't sell you a manual CSL. If you wanted the ultimate (and the last) traditi...

BMW Z4M Buyers Guide by Shooting Brake

BMW's Z4M offers a compelling proposition - a legendary, high-revving, 338BHP S54B32 straight six, a 6-speed manual gearbox (the only gearbox offered on the Z4M) and a rear-wheel-drive layout with a mechanical limited slip diff nestled between the driveshafts. Exciting, driver focused and really rather quick, the Z4M makes for a brilliant second hand purchase. Favourable market conditions in th...

BMW E46 330ci Individual Handover - Shooting Brake
Just received some paddleshifters for my 4S, it's going to be a gamechanger for the tips. My tip only lives in manual mode and auto is for traffic
6:16 the f10 m5 actually has hydraulic steering. its the normal 5 series that has the electric one
I wouldn't say if it's really that perfect the BMW F10 M5 is great because every 50,000 km I have to replace the entire bottom of the engine, connecting rods and bearing😢s, not to mention the turbines.
996s are really ageing like fine wine
My dream car! Great video
✅
😎
cant understand a word this fella is saying.
Special car!
Well said. It is a “use case” scenario. My current 911 is a 964 Tiptronic coupe, and around town it is the perfect classic Porsche. While the 996 has never been my favorite, it is a 911 and does transcend its era because of this. In C4S form it remains an iconic, handsome car.
One of best reviews of things that really matter in a car. Well done!!!
I own a 4S manual and drove both cars. A 996 4s tiptronic comes Never ever even close to a manual . Way too sluggish and boring to drive. IMHO 🤷♂️
Always loved the looks of a 911 996 and I still love the looks of this Porsche it’s aging beautifully like a fine wine and for sure it will eventually be seen as one of Porsches best non turbo cars
Yes you can. But the manual is a lot better 😊
Nice review. I’ve had my E63 635D for a year now, quite simply the best car I’ve ever owned. I know the rear is so divisive, but I personally think it’s the best angle. So far all I’ve done is basic maintenance and servicing, Just about to tick over 153k miles and barely a rattle or squeak
I love those lights they make a big difference to the 996
Love both generations of 996 headlights but the .2 lights with the Turbo bumpers are very iconic!
RUclips has recently started suggesting videos from channels with a few less subs, and it’s videos like this that make me thank the algorithm! It’s nice to have a nuanced conversation about a topic like this. New sub here!
Thanks very much for the kind words - plenty more content to come!
Wow! The 996.2 C4S is a beautiful 911, especially with turbo twists. But the interior on that specific one is the chef’s kiss!! Try as you may, you’re not selling me on a tip, sadly.
No probs - the Tip isn't for everyone! It certainly has its place in the market though, and at this price point its a fantastic (and ULEZ compliant) competitor to something like an E31 8 series or Mercedes SL.
I have had 3 996's all Tip. A properly set up box will change gear, up and down, probably quicker than a manual. This, a manual is a more involving drive! I don't get it. For me, the involving bit is steering an Braking, not lifting my left leg to push a pedal with one hand off the steering wheel. Anyway, each to his own I guess.
nice video, thank you. I think it is possibly the best looking 911 of all time. Newer cars are too fussy and aggressive. The 996 C4S is simple and that's what gives the timeless look. People that don't know anything about cars just like it and that's cool.
Thank you, agree on all counts!
@@shootingbrake cool!
Yes you can. Don't shoot me: I had a go in a manual 996 Targa once and I did not really enjoy my time with that gearbox... Preferred my (now sold) tiptronic 986 Boxster S. Still - if I am ever in a position to buy the 9964S I so desire, I would re-check to see if I still prefer the auto over the manual. Because I know it seems like that can't be right lol.
It all comes down to use case! Both gearboxes are great options occupying different spaces in the market.
I love my manual C4S, would never entertain a Tiptronic though, they have only 5 speeds and the ratios are Looong, takes any ‘sports car’ element away from it. I agree about the ride, they are surprisingly comfortable. The 996 C4S is one of the best looking cars, ever. The rear end is very purposeful, and the front end I think looks good with the Turbo front bumper.
Yes they nailed the C4S design on this gen! Tips aren't for everyone but they definitely have their place in the market.
@@shootingbrake They do, it's just a cheaper place. £5-£6k less
The ugliest 911 is ageing pretty well:)
Good sir! I am IN LOVE with your videos! I badly want a review of YOUR porsche 996(.1?) that I have seen in the other 996 video and now this 996 video... Yours is so clean... I am now subbed and looking forward to seeing that video ;)
Thank you so much!
996's are starting to look pretty good now a days
996.2’s are the best looking 911’s ever
@@aadetale💯facts! It looks the best!
Can't get over how nice that interior is
Yeah. Savannah (yellow/cream) is too much. The grey is a bit like a flight on Lufthansa in 1985 and black is quite common. Contrast cinnamon is gorgeous. I think that’s key though, it needs to be contrasted with black. All cinnamon would be too much. Once you start getting any other colour than black for the steering wheel it’s too full on.
@@rossbethell4187 The full colour Porsche interiors are certainly striking. We love them but the black dash makes for a much more practical car as it doesnt reflect off the windscreen!
I have a 997 and chose one because aesthetically they are much better on the eye than the 996 from the unorthodox headlights. But I have to say with the 4S body kit the 996 does look pretty good still .
Not sure I agree, the rear end of a 996 C4S looks so much nicer, very iconic.
In the flesh a 996 whether narrow or wide body is a lovely thing. For some reason pictures never seem to reflect well of C2s etc.
I'd prefer it in silver. But I'm not that fussy.
Silver is a classic on any Mercedes of this era. We loved the dark navy blue on this one though, and it carried so many different shades depending on the light!
Lovely example. Can you do a review on an E86
Try a manual gearbox with the B8 and the actual hydraulic steering rack... And the sports diff. Power on oversteer. 🤙🏽 My daily.
Keen to try that exact combo!
Replica bumper gotta go 😬
do your research. Get one that's been maintained and loved. Get one that's had the usual stuff done. I'm in my 2nd year of ownership and have spent less than 1200 euro in maintenance in 20 months. And do your own repairs otherwise do not get one
E36 is very good but the e46 m3 is gotta be peak for bmw
There's an M3 for everyone!
Great Car! I like the glas in the back of the Cabrio version. Absolutely underpriced actually. One of the last real v8 engine 🤗
The cabrios are fantastic in this generation of 6!
This is probably the best e50 m5 review I’ve seen.
Thank you, more to come!
You need to try get csl version on your show 😊
Soon!
I’ve just bought a 2nd Gen 1984 1.8EX with an astonishing 2280 miles from new on the clock. Despite being in storage for 39 years it only needed a service, a full brake overhaul and a rear exhaust section. Will have a full MOT next week then I intend to enjoy it on the road. Enjoyed your informed review and your presentation style.
What a gem! Congratulations on the purchase
Don't miss when had both hips replaced. It pretty cool it will go that's for sure
I'm gettin one 🤣✊️
We have a lovely one coming up for sale!
Lovely E36 content. Great quality film!
Thank you! Plenty more to come
i thought it was the caveman from the geico commercial 😅😅😅
The E92 is my perfect car….I will seriously check out the auction
I’d definitely change those horrible painted black wheels back to oem silver finish . Looks way better . Previous owner had no taste whatsoever
Good sir! I Really enjoyed the video. Now I am really really wanting to see the video of YOUR 996 C2. I love love the C2 and am going to get one. I'd love to hear your thoughts and to see more about your c2. It looks AMAZING! It's stanced so so well and its beautiful :D
Thank you! Early 996 C2s are fantastic cars and possibly one of the best drives you can get this side of 30k GBP! Hopefully do a video soon.
Both beautiful M3 's ,I own E92 M3 DCT LCI limited edition 1 pf 500 ...a true drivers car...🔥🔥🔥🔥
I bought the F13 because the ass end on the previous gen is ugly AF
We love the Bangle influenced design on the E63 but it is certainly divisive!
Any E36 coupe is absolutely beautiful, ultimate 90s beauty 🔥
That car didn't look out of place driving amongst them multi million pounds houses.
awesome review
Great vid. I have a 2005 Turbo S manual. Very fun, I’ve done Techart Sterring wheel, lighter wheels and Ti X pipe Exhaust. It is brutal sounding. I might keep it or change to a slightly quieter one. In the power band it feels and sounds like a Porsche racing car. Amazing. I also have a cayman S and Pana turbo. Very fun. Cheers boys.
In what sense do you think it feels like a race Porsche race car?
@@claudiomarangone614 sounds like a racing car. Because it does. My exhaust is Ti unrestricted . It sounds absolutely amazing when in the power band and is very, very loud. Also, the 996 turbo engine is devired from the GT1 Le Mans winning race car. It feels like one because it is very fast and capable of 197(Porsche claims)I also have a Honda CBR400RR motorcycle with similar exhaust(revs to 15,000)It has the same sensation. Brutal, viseral. They race my bike all the time also. I also wanted but haven’t found a smaller bike. CBR250RR. Redline is 19,000 and rev limiter is 20,0000. My bike and this one never came to the USA. The 250RR sounds like an older F1 car. Cheers.
Sounds incredible. It is crazy how much an X-pipe changes the sound of these 911s! The later cup car exhausts collect into a single system which may explain why they sound similar.
@@RichardWarner-df7dz Oh, it sounds like a Porsche race car . pardon, I misunderstood you the first time now I understand. Thank you for your thorough explanation . I own a 964 that has Poersche 993 heat exchangers with a canted X-pipe that flows into 993 mufflers, that have a 1 inch bypass. Sounds excellent with no drone. When I’m on it hard and in high revives, it lets me know what I’m doing and when I’m it gently or on the highway it isn’t tiring. I get compliments on it all the time .
