- In today’s episode of Shooting Brake Reviews, Ghaleb goes over the BMW Z4 sDrive 35IS, BMW’s not so spoken about but very important GT car.
With only 400 ever made for UK Markets, this car gives us the powertrain we never got but always needed, the tuned up N54 with the DCT Gearbox, Which was found in US Market E9X 335is models.
If you own a similar car and are looking to part ways, don’t hesitate to contact us at shootingbrake.com . The Auction Platform for Car Enthusiasts.
You have no idea how excited I was to see this video pop up, SB reviewing an e89?! Hell yes!!
it handles even better with the roof down... all that roof mass up high gets stowed low in the boot... right over the rear wheels. So dynamically it is better with it down....
2011 35is here
yes it is a GT
256.000km driven
of course some repairs, but never broke down on me
mainly Alps and Pyrenees (from the Netherlands)
last years also daily drive
did walnutblast, which was noticable
better oilthermostat
tuned the ECU
wagner intercooler
410HP and 629NM
slipdiff would be nice
can't see myself selling it
Always fancied one of these, i had a 3.0LTR version 9 years ago 2010 reg, manual.
The 2010 E89 Z4 35is was my first and only car. Even though it was a bottomless money pit, the stupid grin it puts on my face every time I get behind the wheel was priceless. Pity I had to relocate and had to sell it.
Amazing quality content. Audio, cinematic and delivery is on point. Well done
Much appreciated, Thank you!
I love my 35is, currently my daily driver and it never fails to put a smile on my face. Running Stage 1 MHD, so much power! Another thing that isn’t mentioned is the BMW 1M and Z4 35is actually share the same variant of the N54, different from the 335is that was mentioned a few times throughout the video.
Great to hear!
You noticed a difference on stock vs stage 1? Any supporting mods?
Also, it appears the catalytic converter is slightly higher flowing on the stock exhaust on the 35is N54. It has square cells vs circular cells. Neat stuff and loving my '14 is!
Currently just a vRSF charge pipe with BOV and DCI. From stock to stage 1 it’s night and day difference in power. Definitely more boost!
Dude, thank you so much for reviewing this car!
Our pleasure!
I'm in the UK and have a 35iS too which I'm never selling - there are only 393 left on the road in the UK and the max was 439 in 2015, so getting rarer every year. It's my daily driver and it's super fun to drive hard. Those who know, know. Those who don't know ask me if it's tuned or mapped when it's all stock, including all the pops and crackles. I think it is the only good looking car BMW have made in the last 20 years, with the exception of the i8 of course.
I’m one of the 393 left. Mine was made in the last month of manufacture, and has just gone over 20,000 miles, and as in new condition. The car is so underrated, and I took it to LeMans in 2024, 2 people, held all our stuff, roof down both ways, comfortable and a delight to drive. I was thinking of buying a Caymen but I found the Z4 the better combination of serious sports tourer, and looks good roof up or down
@@luisgriffiths2714 My favourite thing only we seem to know. We basically have BMW 1M convertibles. Jeremy Clarkson said this on Top Gear: "Honestly, if somebody said to me, "You have to have to one of these for the rest of your life", I would be delighted. It's brilliant car. No, it's great. I love it."
I love my 2011 Z4 35IS!
Wouldn’t trade mine. Drives great, looks even better which I don’t find with the G29 or the previous gens, E85/6.
Sure its forgotten, the 35is is hard to find. Same with the previous gen's z4 n52 version, the z4 3.0si. Very very cool cars, a z4 with the holy grail engine (if you dont mind the maintenance)
Great review! The rattles in that cabin would drive me insane lol
Common problem easily remedied by adding some felt tape to the four roof support wedges. The rubber wears over time and introduces movement.
Guys, save yourself some money and get a NA 6-cylinder e89 (23i or 30i).
I have one and they are plenty fast on normal roads, sound amazing (!) and the sweet spot of the range. Edit: they also have an oil temp gauge…😉
If you want more performance get a Porsche 997 Carrera S.
Thanks for sharing!
very composed car indeed, and i love mine however the open diff almost kills it for me
I compared these to a r172 mercedes slk 350, I bought the mercedes even though it was a 2012, it was a much nicer car and easily beats the boxster in value and cost of ownership.
I used to own an N54 e92 335i with the 7 speed DCT unusually it was the DCT that started playing up before the N54 did 😂
American here, the zf6's start messing up too in our auto 335i's. I fixed mine with solenoids, filters and fluids.
@SicSemperBeats I ended up selling that n54 with the issue which is a shame as the N54 with a DCT is quite rare in the UK. Believe it was maybe an issue with where the main plug from the loom goes into the box as, when the issue was there when scanning the car it could not "see" the gearbox at all. Back to a manual now.
@@craigy87 i dont blame you. I’m in my first dct car rn a 981 boxster, i absolutely love it, but i wish i had a manual one right beside it!!
Why would I know that it existed when BMW’s own in house M division didn’t even know that generation of Z4 existed, E85/6 are the only notable Z4 the rest are total flops.
Lci 35is owner here. Hasn't skipped a beat in 3 years ownership. Used as a daily and it just so much fun. Chargepipe and induction kit done. Is the stage 1 noticeable? Thinking MHD or XHP gearbox.
The e89 has been completely off my radar. Never appealed to me when new, but they are looking good these days. I imagine there is a lot that can go wrong with that powertrain though.
I had 1 .2011 .It was my baby .Fast enough for me .And my wife loved it when she could drive it to here work ,with the top down. She is a nurse .To me a fast car.A bit heavy .But ?a big smile when i drive it ..,I had to sell it too Safe my small business .2025 .Ow boy in NL .
The 35is probably the least reliable Z4 trim, similar to the infamous 335i. The NA trim with the N52 and a manual is the one to get for this e89 Z4 generation.
maybe unreliable, but that silky torque when stock, and back punches when tuned, can't be replaced imo. I love the n54 so much
I owned a black E89 m-sport with red leather interior from 2016, and it was a brilliant car, but I sold it because I wanted the slightly more powerful 35i or 35iS. Sadly, however, I have not found a perfect one, even though money is no consideration for me. I dont mind paying 70k or even 80k for the perfect one in supreme condition with very low mileage, because I am simply in love with it. I dont really like the G29, but I might buy a new one if I can not find the perfect E89.
Stumbled upon a '14 35is, one owner, dealer serviced, accident free with 12k miles for $22k USD. It was not immaculate but... Could I go wrong??
@@beauwille2294 Wow, that sounds too good to be true.... Let it check out by a specialist and go for it...!!!
