    When people say that going vegetarian/vegan is more expensive I used to be legitimately confused by that logic... like, have you SEEN the meat section recently?!?
    Then I realized that a lot of times they're looking at all of the meat substitutes like quorn and fieldroast, which would in fact cost more overall. Don't get me wrong, i love those products when I get a craving that won't go away but they don't fit in my regular grocery budget at all!

    Menu planning is a must for me. I plan my meals very carefully so I only buy what I need for the week. Beans and rice are staples. Nuts are a treat and definitely not a staple. I have a few recipes that are less than $2 per serving. I only buy fruit and veggies that are in season. Potatoes, rice and beans are the basis of my diet. Oatmeal and banana breakfasts are wonderful. All of these are cheap and healthy. A vegan diet is attainable by everyone. Don't give up because you think it is too expensive. Just plan carefully and you can do it.
    Peace and love ❤️

    Cheaper to get a can of tomato paste for 45 cents and you can make enough spaghetti sauce for 2 days with a little garlic/oil/some herbs. Also you can get a big bag of frozen corn and it's much better than corn from a can and still cheap. Also you can get enough potatoes to eat for a week for $1.50 or less. And dry beans are much cheaper than canned and have no additives, you just need to soak them and cook for a while. Oats are cheap too.

      @AWanderingEye 7 лет назад +1

      Prancer1231 I saw the same issue with the pasta sauce, owning a crockpot made my college days easier, too. I think some equate student with non cook. But spaghetti sauce isn't too much effort and doesn't have to cook all day to make something passable, imho.

      Yes my farmers market is expensive as well, I don't seem to get out of there for less than 40-60- bucks and that is on a good day!! I could easily spend $125.00. Im sure that shopping results at local farmers markets around the country will very greatly.. If you noticed he bought a nice variety of fruit and vegetables- bananas, squash, avo, and kale IN SMALL QUANTITIES. I think that was the MAGIC KEY in keeping his bill low.

    My best advice is to buy rice in 20 lbs sacks. If you can find a store that sells products from India you can get very high grade stuff for so much cheaper than at grocery stores. Also for the price of just a few containers of Orville Redenbacher's I scored a 50 lbs bag of popcorn which will provide me with months of whole grain snacking deliciousness @ pennies a day! Buying in bulk also saves you money because it saves you from frequent trips to the store where it's easy to get suckered into impulsively buying junk food! Lastly, learn to grow food in whatever space you have -- lettuce, herbs, tomatoes are all pretty easy.

      Great cheap-vegan-food list!!
      Here's mine (it's a lot like yours):
      spaghetti made with whole wheat pasta and jarred spaghetti sauce
      chili made from canned beans and tomatoes (I add spices)
      nachos or burritos made with canned refrieds and homemade guac.
      tofu scramble w/ Aunt Millie's (grocery-store brand) whole wheat english muffins spread with peanut butter
      sliced bananas topped with a little PB and Hersey's chocolate syrup
      PB&J sammies, usually open-face (it's just better)
      pizza made with whole wheat pita bread, tomato sauce, veggies
      Cheerios with nutmilk or soymilk.
      There's more, but this is getting too long.

I especially appreciate your emphasis on helping the animals. Now that veganisim is becoming more main stream, people are really scrutinizing all vegans as if they should only be vegan for their Health but I think a lot of us start off as ethical Vegans. I'm sure you inspire a lot of people every day. Thank you for being caring and non-judgmental. (:

    Are you going to cook with that all week now and eat only from that all week? Are you going to show what the meals looked like? I think I would have gone for more organic and less processed food. It is hard to stay on a budget like that though. I think I would have gone for the bags of frozen vegetables instead of canned.
    One trick I do with tea bags, you put one in a small pitcher, maybe one liter, and then let it steep in the water on the counter. Then you get like three cups of tea per bag.

    Well I get that it's possible to live and be vegan with not much money, but I think it depends a lot where you live.
    The vegan products are waaaay cheaper in this vid than where I live, and we don't have a lot of stuff for us (like there is no vegan waffles etc). I just did my groceries for the week (and I'll have to buy bread again during the week), and it cost me 67euros. And I just bought vegetables, fruits, muesli, all sorts of nuts and a bottle of rice milk.
    I don't have a farmer's market where I live, or I should go there with a car, but I don't have one. I live in the city, and fruits and vegetables are expansive af. And the prices of nuts are insane ! But it's important in a vegan diet so I gotta buy them.
    It's possible to be vegan and on a budget, but it's gonna be more difficult depending on were we live. I'm also a broke student so I had to make some choices, I'm not going out like I used to do before, just so I can continue to eat vegan. This lifestyle is way more expansive than my old one. (And in your groceries there was no toothpast, shampoo and stuff like that. The budget would have been a bit different I think, especially since the vegan ones are expansive as hell. At least the ones that work for me).

      It's possible anywhere, but in certain places you're not going to be able to afford many fresh veggies and fruits. It's the same where I live, but I use the cheapest foods, like potatoes and rice, for staples and always buy things in bulk. Frozen veggies are less expensive, and you don't actually lose any nutrition. Seeds are the cheaper alternative to nuts, as you can get them as cheap as 2 dollars per pound if you buy in bulk : )

    • @Monanged
      @Monanged 7 лет назад +1

      I want to be able to eat healthy, balanced and to have everything that I need. Potatoes and rice are great but not the best for an everyday vegan diet. Fruits and vegetables are super important if I don't want to have any deficiency. I don't have a place where I can buy seeds in bulk and in my local market there is not that much in seeds. Maybe I should order online (that's what a lot of vegan I know do), but in the end I'll still have to pay the travel cost. (And I can't really buy anything in bulk. I do everything by foot and it's too heavy. And my student room is soooo small. I don't have a lot of storage places...
      (The frozen veggies are a good idea though, although there is not a lot of stuff. Or it's huge and I can't carry it, or there is cream in it).
      It's possible for me to do cheaper groceries but I have to take buses, walk a lot and carry a lot so it's time consuming and it requires too much effort.
      I'm okay with paying a bit more and partying less :)

    • @22blue3
      @22blue3 7 лет назад +4

      Monanged Potatoes actually have quite an array of nutrients, though it's not as if potatoes and rice is all I eat. I just use them as the "base" for meals and add in other stuff to balance it out. Sucks that you have to carry everything through the city though, wasn't thinking about that as I just carpool. Hope you find something that works for you.

    Great video!
    Other ways to save money is to use bulk stores, buy beans dried and soak over night and cook enough to last the week. Even a bag of dried beans in the grocery store works out cheaper but you have to plan ahead.
    Another thing that saves on veg and fruit is to shop the discount section of grocery stores or salvage stores. I have found a place that discounts both and it's saving me a ton of money and is in a speciality/upscale grocery store that I would NEVER have guessed would greatly discount fruit and veg. Frozen veg in the salvage store saves me a ton over the winter months. I find being vegan way cheaper than eating meat and dairy as long as you are not looking for pre-made or junk food products.

One thing I want to note, since you briefly addressed palm oil...most traditional grocery stores sell peanut butter that contains palm oil, its usually the second ingredient...From my experience the store brands at Safeway, Albertsons, and Walmart all contain it, as well as JIF and some other, fancier names. I know the point of this video was making it affordable, and you did a great job. Just wanted to mention. :)

    If you have an electric pressure cooker, you can eat very cheaply. I have an Instant Pot, if you're savvy you can get a good deal but the other brands work great and can be had for under $50. With these you can cook dried beans and grains quickly, potatoes super fast. With lentils and a few vegetables you can make a huge batch of soup for pennies that will last days. One cup of lentils, six cups of water, couple carrots and stalks of celery, one onion and a little salt. 20min start to finish.

    Something to try for those that don't have access to a farmers market is checking with the local wholesale produce companies. Many times they are open to the public and will give you deals, especially on items that might be turning that they can't ship to restaurants/stores. Don't be scared away from produce that doesn't look perfect.

    My rice cooker helps me eat cheap. Look for vegan rice cooker meals. And I shop at my local dollar store for food often and buy only the off brand items. Most of the time one is really paying a lot of money for the same product just because it is a popular name brand. Breakfast is always oat meal I can add or change up what I put on top of the oat meal. I like peanut butter cinimon and dried fruit. Rice, frozen mixed veggie or peas and top ramen are my two go to staples since I can always change things up.

    The prices at the farmers market can vary among vendors. Just last week, I bought pink lady apples for &1.99 a pound and as I went deeper into the market, they were being sold other vendors for $2.99. Grocery stores like Aldi have very good prices on produce and staples. Avocados were $0.59 each last week and $1.00 for a head of cauliflower.

    Personally I bulk cook my main meal cooking once or twice a week, that way I can budget easily and whilst some dishes get a little samey, bulk cooking, especially with beans and or lentils is always a great way to make sure to have something filling and nutritious. I can easily get by on £10-20 a week. Its true farmers markets are expensive, but when I'm needing to really cut my spending I buy a mixed vegetable box (organic) from a popular on-line supplier. For £19 a large less roots vegetable box will make soup and stews to last 2 weeks with freezing much of what I make. Using wraps and left overs fulfil my lunches and breakfast is often skipped due to early starts. One thing though, whilst I loved the video, would enjoy a video diary of you going through the week with your purchases. Always interested in new budget ideas to keep things fresh and interesting.

    Where I live, we have an Aldi's and also a couple of clearance centers that sell excess from grocery stores for deep discounts. I can also join a food co-op and get a big basket of veggies for pretty cheap. Anyone who is looking to be vegan on a budget needs to see what else they have in their area besides just the grocery store and needs to learn not to rely on premade foods.

    Our family of three spend around $50/week. Our farmers market is more expensive than the supermarket, so we don't go there. We get cheap veggies and mushroom from 99 cent stores (two portobello caps for 99 cents!) or Asian grocery stores (non-gmo tofu for $1) Most common veggies are inexpensive anyway, like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, celery and we can get them around $1 at local grocery stores, so there's no worry. We still get to enjoy vegan meat like Gardein (stock up on them from Central Market and Winco, they are only $3 a pack and their almond/Soy milk are as low as $2) and we get vegan cheese twice a month when they're on sale.

    Thank you for supporting a vegan lifestyle--I have been mostly vegetarian for the past 20 years, and I am now ready to go vegan after watching What The Health. I think you could have done a lot better by buying dried beans--you get much more and they are usually about $1 per pound., a week's worth. All you have to do is soak them overnight (I put in a tablespoon of crushed garlic) in my crockpot and plug it in with lots of water before I leave for work. Lentils are even easier to cook and just as delicious. Frozen veggies are also cheaper and healthier, I think. Thanks again, :--)

You made it clear that it is indeed possible to shop cheap. Which Weggies do you use? We left Rochester 3 years ago, and North Country grocery stores make us rethink our location a lot! Namaste!

    +amdg+ another good deal that you can count on especially during winter are potatoes, where we are, you can get them at the local fruit and veggie stand for $1.50 for a 5lb bag, and at a local ShopRite $2.50 - love these shopping on a budget videos +pax Christi!+

    Thank you for a great video :D
    It´s inspiring to see, how much you can get, even fresh produce, within the budget.
    I´m currently an exchange student in Norway and have been a little shocked about the prices here (to put it mildly) But most of the items you chose are still the ones I´d go for since they are in season and therefore the most affordable :)

    Last month, I gave myself a $100 limit per week for my vegan groceries. I found I easily spent less than $65 per week and was completely satisfied. I recommend large bags of rice and oats. I made my own bean chili that would last a full week.

    Yes your right we just went vegan my whole family and I about 4 weeks ago. We are feeling much better and watching your videos helps me make awesome meals . It is not more expensive going vegan. I go to the dallor tree and get some things that help us stay healthy on a tight budget. We are fulltime RV family. Thanks for you help 😘💓

    I love watching these and I'm always amazed at how inexpensive food is in other parts on the US and the world...comparatively 😊. The grocery store prices were on par but that farmers market was awesome! Here in Western Colorado, produce is king and you pay for it lol

    I'm envious that your local grocery so clearly labels all their products. I have to read labels til I go cross-eyed!

    Soup beans, potatoes (fried, mashed, or baked), greens (mustard, kale, turnip, collards, or spinach), and cornbread! Throw in some grits, oatmeal, or cream of wheat for breakfast. Bananas and any fruit in season. Two people can eat for a month for about $150, regardless of where you live. And it's vegan. You will be able to eat all your stomach will hold! I'll take that over ramen noodles or a pretzel anytime. Soul food without animal products can be done! Might be a challenge in a college dorm though. Good video. I think it will help a lot of people. :-)
