I’ve been vegan almost 12 years and this channel not only helped me go vegan but has been a resource I’ve shared countless times over the years to help other people. I absolutely empathize with getting frustrated by people who are gate keepers or ridiculously perfectionistic. Thank you for all the work you’ve done over the years!

Well said, Chris! I completely agree with every word you spoke, and I feel the same way. Vegan for almost 10 years and I absolutely made the decision for the animals. I'm 67 and it was a smooth and easy transition. Using age as an excuse not to go vegan is ridiculous, it's a lie and a justification. Either you care about animals, or you pretend you care about them. 💚🐟🦃🦞🐣🦘🐘🐈🐎🐃🐐🐄💚

I went vegan literally overnight due to ETHICAL reasons. I CANNOT relate to any human who does NOT go vegan once they know where their "food" comes from. I have been vegan for over 10+ yrs. I know people who have seen documentaries "Earthlings" etc... yet refuse to stop the animal cruelty. I think such people are PSYCHOPATHS. Plain a simple.

Yah, my mother in law is close to your age and became vegetarian after joining a religious group called Dao. She started preaching kindness towards animals, so I tried to help her make the connection with eggs, dairy, leather, etc, but she's all about TALKING about her enlightenment and following the rules they give her. To kill animals for cakes or little bits of fried bird egg in rice doesn't sound very enlightened or kind to me. Some people just want to have the image of compassion without changing their habits to reflect it. Besides, the religion didn't teach her not to harm others. Virtually every culture around the world teaches this to their children, just don't connect the dots with their diet.

Even from a health perspective, it isn't even the worst thing in the world. But everyone gets to make their own choices in regards to the habits they curate. I don't like seeing my husband turn to the amount of processed vegan foods that he does, but that's because I love him and want him in good health (and want my kids to rely on whole foods primarily). But the gate keeping in this regard can be too much, agreed.

👏 Omg yes! I SO CANNOT STAND all of the ignorant comments! People need to justify why they don't want to eat vegan food, so they try and find things wrong with it. My favorites... It's over processed, it's fake, why eat something that mimics meat, just eat vegetables, you won't get enough protein, plants are alive and scream when you cut them, soy will give men estrogen, we are meant to eat meat, our ancestors did it, we are the top of the food chain, that's what farmed animals are raised for, I only buy from local farmers that care for their animals, they are humanely killed, they are killed quickly, they don't have feelings, hunting helps to prevent them from starving or getting overpopulated and they don't go to waste, and possibly the best one there is - stop forcing your lifestyle/beliefs on others!! OH YA? Stop forcing animals to be tortured and killed for your lifestyle/beliefs hypocrites! 😠 I'm sure I forgot others! I wish these m0r0ns weren't allowed to breed! Hopefully they got 💉. If not, they just might. Animals will be vax with an mRNA gene therapy soon and the risks are completely unknown. Last thing didn't go as planned. This should be interesting....

@@TheVeganZombie I thought that was implied. I just thought something short and sweet sounded nice. I didn't come up with it though, so I don't need to advocated for a short and sweet definition of veganism. "doing the least amount of harm possible" sounds more like pacifism or Jainism, to me. Your point about pedantic vegans causing others to not attach themselves to the vegan label is true. I am longtime vegan who works in a somewhat conservative field (trying to change it), and I have told my coworkers before that I “don’t eat animal products for ethical reasons,” and they are tolerant and even curious about that. I’ve also told them that I’m “vegan,” and, more often than not, they completely shut down. We have to be better vegans to help better the label for others. Keep fighting the good fight.

Have learned it is easier not to announce this. Am tired of people who will want to play 'gotcha', you know what I mean, someone who thinks they will catch me being a hypocrite, in their eyes. Am tired of people who feel they have to justify their life choices to me.
I made my decision for me, it was a way I wanted to live my life.
Have never told anyone they have to be like me, never pretended to be perfect.
That's the point, life is a journey we all live in our own way. I don't answer to anyone but my conscience.
My advice to people is to do your best everyday. If you stumble, dust yourself off and start again.

I agree, that had to be said, good job Vegan Zombie. There is a lot of hate from non-vegans towards vegans, but also there are a lot of people who are vegan, who hate on other vegans.
Example: recently, I felt like I needed some community and support in my vegan journey (feelings of isolation from the population of meat eaters), I tried interacting with the Vegan Gaze channel, and I was really struggling with their and their comrade's attitudes of hate, maliciousness, and negativity. I am trying to help, by acknowledging what is going on. I offered to help/converse with the Vegan Gaze and the offer was accepted, and then I was stood up. That said, I try to be accepting of all tactics, but even more so, I agree with what the Vegan Zombie said today. People are where they are at, people are individuals, turning people off turns people off. Just don't turn people off to veganism. It isn't that hard to get. Now, I am on my own journey trying to be cool and relaxed.
Another example relating to this video: years ago, when I was starting to "really" go vegan and was looking for support and community, there were two vegan groups in my area and they hated each other, but why? I never found out I went and did my own thing and stayed vegan.

Anyone who is trying to be on the vegan journey should be supported and not condemned. I don't care if you're eating impossible burgers every day. It's not that healthy, but that's your choice and it's working to help the animals and our planet. My brother still eats fish, but I got him to stop using all other animal products. It'd be great if he was totally vegan, but just not eating beef or dairy was enough for me. Be kind. Show compassion. I've had people tell me too that I'm not doing veganism right because once or twice a week I have some processed jackfruit nuggets, or some other processed foods. Who cares? It's vegan and that's what matters. The whole food plant based diet would be ideal, but not everyone has the kind of time to spend 4 hours in the kitchen every day.
Don't let those people get to you, Chris. I rarely comment on your videos, but I watch the majority of what you post. I love the vegan stuff at certain stores videos and any type of video sharing new vegan products. That's why I subbed. Keep doing you, because most people love it. Peace brother.

When I first went vegan, I thought if I just told everyone what was really going on, everyone else would go vegan as well (you can imagine how that went). I felt heartbroken and desperate and I became an angry vegan for awhile. Then, I realized that this is not what I wanted to put out into the world. I went vegan out of love and compassion for animals and how I was acting was not loving or compassionate. It was definitely turning people off because who wants to become angry and bitter like I was? I don't have all the answers, but people are more open minded if you are nonjudgmental and show them how accessible being vegan can be.

So many vegans turn people off from veganism by their holier than thou, perfectionist attitude, which in turn harms the animals even more, as less people may go vegan bc of this. I couldn’t agree more with what you’ve said, thank you for the rant, your logical and critical thinking is a skill many lack. I support and stand by you 💯 and maybe this might wake some people up to toxic and harmful behaviors/attitudes. Veganism is about the animals, not who’s the “better vegan”.

The indescribable suffering that animals go thru and what consuming sentient beings does to our planet is alarming to me. I’m in my late 60’s I didn’t start out my vegan journey with that mindset it purely for health reasons but as learned and grew from others I realized that this movement is much much bigger than anyone of us. We only have this one chance to get this right. Our grandkids are counting on us. Thanks for all you do 😊☮️❤️

Exactly. Some vegans try to make it some competition or something, which doesn't help anything. Though you have to think some people with that frame of mind could be newer to the movement. So their passion is high and not as understanding or seeing the bigger picture. It's all about learning and growing. ❤❤

Really appreciate this video. Creators should always be able to express things that are bothering them, just like anyone else. As frustrated as you sounded, all of it went back to being compassionate, and I think that shows what a good person you are. I’m not vegan because of some current issues, but I make plant based choices when I can and I know any move in the right direction is a good one. I do hope to be able to remove animal products fully from my diet one day, but hearing your no judgement stance helps me know there are people who support those with good intentions that aren’t at the same place as them yet.

That's so awful to see you so upset I can't imagine anyone saying anything bad about you or your drive to help people and animals. I found your channel when I first went vegan, and it helped me so much. As an almost 10 year vegan I completely agree with you. I'm 76, and every day I do my utmost to make choices that are for the animals. I read labels and I purchase products that are animal free. My family is not vegan and none of my friends are vegan, but I never give them a hard time about it. After all, I went 67 years being non-vegan! I make vegan food and give it to people at the holidays, like cookies at Christmas. My friends and family love the food I make, and ask me if I'm making it again at each holiday (I consider this a win). When I go to their homes, they always make something that I can eat, and I always take along food, just in case. And I should add here, that they always want to try the food that I take. When we go out to eat, we always go to places where I can get something vegan (I call ahead or go on line to make sure), or we go to vegan restaurants. I don't lecture them, and they don't harass me because I'm vegan. I really hate when vegans make a big deal about non-vegans. I figure live and let live. Do the best you can and don't try to force your lifestyle on others. Whatever you do, Chris, don't let the "police" get to you. Your product reviews help us make choices, and your videos are fun and informative.

Extremism in any situation isn't always helpful. We have a long way to go to get people to except the idea of going vegan and its easier to share a message in a kind, excepting and loving way rather than a strict, black and white way. Its a turn off to most people thinking of going vegan when it feels extreme. A gentle approach is best.
I completely agree with your message here....

    Hello, my friend.
I find myself amidst those "unfavorable" Vegans.
I recognize the behavior you're describing in me, but I have two reasons for it.
Firstly, I believed that by acting this way, it might gently nudge non-Vegans into thinking about the matter.
Secondly, it's a way to shield myself from potentially compromising my Veganism due to the overwhelming prevalence of non-Vegan options on my touristy island of Mykonos, Greece, where most restaurants and fast-food establishments don't cater to Vegans.
I want to clarify that this isn't an attack; it's a form of self-defense.
I've been a Vegan for eight years now, and turning Vegan has been the best decision I've ever made.
The positive changes in my life after all these years of Veganism have been significant.
I firmly believe that Vegan philosophy and lifestyle are the only paths toward a happier planet and truly compassionate human beings.
I acknowledge my shortcomings and am actively working on improving myself.
It's important to note that my behavior isn't overly extreme, but rather a response to the challenge of engaging with non-Vegans who can be quite unresponsive to the suffering of animals used for food.
They often exhibit a certain indifference, considering such suffering as normal or acceptable.
    Thank you!
💻P.S. ChatGPT helped me with my English that is unfortunately not my main language!

True! Of course we won't be able to stop the cross-contamination in restaurants that serve both animal and plant-based foods, so I understand not wanting to eat from those places.
I also think it is extremely important to comsume vegan option offered at these places in order to create a demand and increase vegan products.
I wonder if some vegans who hate it havent thought about it that way. It's not an easy decision for some, but I want more options and completely boycotting them because of cross contamination will take us back to not making changes.

Honestly, I feel like this really needed to be said and I'm glad you were the one to say it.
The one distinction I do try to make and emphasize with people without going into an argument over the definition (simply because it is what it is), is that veganism is a lifestyle which seeks to exclude animal harm and exploitation as far as possible or able to be practiced. Whenever people try to confuse it with health or environmental concerns and they use the word 'vegan', I do try and clarify that because to me it's important that people understand the word for what it is.
It's about the animals. That's it.
Thank you for being you, man. 💖

I appreciate you posting this. It’s kind of made me think twice. Maybe I’m a bit too judgmental? Maybe I’m harsh towards those I love…..the anger takes over for me. It’s hard to be around loved ones knowing they’re choosing violence. But I try to remember I was them once and I understand their point of view.
I was chucked out my activist group for not being vegan enough. Because I failed to successfully get my cat on plant based food. And after a year of trying I decided my cats health was more important than having her eat something she didn’t like. She kept getting ill. But that wasn’t enough for our group organiser. I was told to murder my cat because of this. And if I didn’t, I had to leave A.V. Because I wasn’t technically vegan. The shame I felt for it was heavy. I stopped doing activism because I felt like a hypocrite. But I am vegan. And I support all other vegans. We are all different and our approach’s are different but we should be supporting each other. We are few and far between as it is. I know veganism is growing but the fighting between vegans is rife. I promise to try not shame other vegans. Or carnists from this day onwards. Thanks for this post dude. 🌱

I agree with you, and I think it's actually an important aspect of activism to stay on top of what junk foods or commonly eaten foods are vegan. I don't eat it often, but every time a colleague notices me quickly scan an ingredient list, see that it's vegan, and then eat it - it sparks a conversation. People often don't realise how much of what they already eat is vegan, they have this idea that going vegan essentially means abandoning a huge part of their social life and everything they know. Sometimes it'll spark funny conversations - "These 'beef' flavoured crisps are vegan, but these salted one's aren't! How weird is that!". It gets people asking questions about why certain decisions are made about their food, that they wouldn't even think about otherwise.
Having these options available means that I get to model how simple it is. You don't need to leave society and go live off pinecones in a forest shack to do vegan 'right'.

If people want to be a perfectionist, that's fine, but the fact they have to throw other vegans (who are clearly following the definition) under the bus, then they can f right off! I'm sure this video was a lot more cathartic than replying to each individual who might think otherwise. You've always shown a positive look at veganism and if I ever made a channel, I would filter so many words/delete those types of comments, they'd just leave. You've been vegan for a very long time and although I don't comment on your videos, they've all been great! Everything you said in this video is right on point to boot. You saw how some other vegans were presenting themselves and you made your own path. Every path has a purpose, especially when following the definition of veganism, they're just not for all of us. The main reason I stopped following a few people is because of this.
Keep up the great videos, Chris! You have nothing going wrong and doing everything right for you, all within the definition!

It's not the same today. I'm 66. I don't call myself vegan. I'm not. I'm a Plant Eater. 13 years ago I was told to stop consuming all animal products or I would need a liver transplant. I have. Awesome points Chris. What I've seen is my own journey though was that when I did judge others for not being vegan or whatever.. It came from a place where "I was equally hard on myself" I think that's why there are "militant" vegans out there. It's why I like to be called plant based. As I continue my journey on this "plant based" path of spirituality and meditation I see the largest thing that's keeping the world in "3d vs 5d" is the inability for us to accept ourselves and also be authentic with ourselves. I feel like growing on this spiritual path is much like peeling back the proverbial onion. As in you go through the same experience again, but experience it differently. As I continue on this spherical Earth rock more and more I contemplate on the the impermanence of life, how I'm only here for a short time.. how we all are. It's as if everything both matters and doesn't as well. I think there's something to be said for the "local" movement as well. around me in Colorado are a lot of local farmers and they produce local eggs. I think that is a good way. The chickens are quite happy... although are in many ways slaves you could say.. still better than factory farms.. so a step in a good direction. I think some of us aren't made to be completely vegan. Even the Dali Llama isn't really even vegetarian. I guess he wanted to be, but was advised by his doctor that he had to eat meat. The longer I've been plant based.. the harder it's been for me to even consider eating something like fish. I don't think we can get away from cruelty though even if all we eat is plants. There is still suffering there. I had a friend that was vegan and then did two Vipassana retreats back to back for 10 days and emerged to go back to eating meat. There's numerous RUclips personalities that started out to be quite "militant" in their vegan promotions, but then switched paths. I think at the end of the day "we're all different"... Yet we are all one too. Everything that we face in life at a particular moment is reflection of the vibration that we are vibrating.. our deep subconscious programs.. I very much align with you in your compassion to anyone seeking to strive for the vegan way of life. I feel an awakening in the world and I'm quite sure that eventually everyone will be plant based/vegan. Our environmental ways seem to point to this. I like to see the transition to that as evolutionary.. for the simple premise that advancement in humanity always points to deeper forms of simplicity. Thank you for your contemplative video. I love your latest lasagna recipe!

I was a part of a vegan Facebook group and I was deemed not vegan enough because I was tagged in a photo with my brother and our friend at Buffalo Wild Wings. I just ate their side salad which was over priced and was just lettuce and tomatoes and a vinegar dressing. Buffalo Wild Wings have zero vegan options and I wouldn't decide to go to it. But we were in Nashville and the guys wanted to go so I went ate the salad and had a drink, and then brought snack bars to hold me over until we got back to our friend's place. But according to some in the FB group that means I am not vegan. That turned me off from the group and I immediately unfollowed it. At that point I had been vegetarian for 6 years and vegan for 3 so it didn't deter me from being vegan or calling myself vegan, but someone who had just went vegan it could deter them.

Please don’t stop making videos. I have been vegan for 7 years. Your channel has been instrumental in my journey! Thank you for all that you do.

Thank you so much for taking the thoughts that were trapped in my mind and expressing them so passionately into reality. I have always enjoyed your videos, but this one really stands out for me. Keep fighting the good fight, my friend.

Yep - possible or practicable. Let's move from fighting against what we don't want, to focusing on what we DO want. Far more effective means of creation.

Thanks for making this video! It makes a lot of sense.
I usually make my own food, sometimes I have vegan convenience foods, especially when you or another vegan influencer shares something cool looking.. when i do eat out, I'll find the vegan/vegetarian options and request that they don't put in the non vegan items. Pizza without cheese can be awesome.
I'll find cool things to bring for potlucks. I made a curry that went well at the crafts guild. My friend made Brand New Vegan's award winning chili to the last meeting, and there was very little left.
The food industry is scary, so I'm trying to grow my own food. I started late, so this year's successes are a giant arugula "bush", same with peppermint and spearmint. 🤣
The way i see it, I need to learn what works on my land. I'll happily share with the local wildlife, and i guess next year I'll figureb out how to protect what i don't want to share.
I'll see what grows well where I live, and I'll see what i can grow that supports the planet and the pollinators.
We may eventually have to grow out own food. IDK if i believe the doomsayers that we're looking at empty grocery store shelves, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared.
Anyway, thanks for this video! I feel that you touched several important points. ❤

You always handle these situations perfectly Chris. You don’t even owe anyone an explanation but I’m glad you posted this for obvious reasons. Now you can actually refer other unhappy “holier than thou” trolls to this very video in future comment sections. 😉

I’m surprised to hear that you were criticized and your vegan status questioned. The fact that you went vegan 30 years ago (something I should have done too but was too weak and too selfish at the time to do it) gives you more credibility than just about anyone else on the subject.
I recall when the Impossible Whopper came out you were very clear that this item was not meant for vegans but you still thought it was great that it existed and I don’t see how anyone could disagree with it.
I do not agree with fellow vegans “attacking” you, of all people, because you demo a plant based item at a non vegan restaurant. You’ve made your position very clear and I’m assuming these folks are just not as familiar with your history.
My only disagreement is that I do feel that non vegans should be made to feel uncomfortable. Showing great food is fine, but without talking about the ethics there is no reason why a non vegan would choose a delicious vegan apple pie instead of a non vegan one when they are at the store on their own. So I don’t think “pick me vegans” who never want to talk about the evil that non vegans are supporting and instead just like to “inspire” accomplish anything. I don’t think telling someone that they are responsible for terrible horrors pushes anyone away from going vegan. Those that claim “I would go vegan but hearing all those ‘militant’ vegans preach turned me off” are lying. They are just excuse makers who hide behind excuses for their own benefit and will come up with any excuse not to change their destructive lifestyle.
But I for one never viewed you as a pick me vegan. I’m surprised if anyone in the vegan community does. Your vegan “resume” so to speak is unmatched in the “influencer” community.
Glad you will keep being you. I think your original idea for this channel was absolutely brilliant but I am glad you got in front of the camera and shared your vegan history. While I was already vegan when I found your channel, your cooking tips, grocery visits, restaurant visits, family get togethers and stories have been a positive and enjoyable watch.
