Not underrated....they self destructively destroyed their own career with in fighting and on stage meltdowns.....they had the world's ear....and they blew it under a fog of self doubt and the stereotypes of rock and roll....the drinks and drugs cloud judgement...and ruin your life. Could have been one of the greats...now a grunge footnote or also ran.....too bad too...great music.

The hour is ending, can't you see?
There is no way now, to be free
In the shadow of the season
Without a reason to carry home
    A reason
    Without a reason
And from the north woods down to the valley
In a world of hurting, I'm moving on
Out from the lighthouse, out on the ocean
Can't climb the mountain, so very tall
Said, "Lord please give me what I need"
He said, "There's pain and misery"
    Oh, sweet oblivion feels alright
The hour is drawing ever closer
And rolling over, won't let me be
In the shadow of the season
To find a reason, to carry home
Said, "Lord please give me what I need"
He said, "There's pain and misery"
    Oh, sweet oblivion
Calls me onward to her side
And feels her song deep inside
    And find the reason
In the shadow of the season
To find a reason, to carry home
In the shadow of the season
To find a reason, to carry home
    Find a reason
To carry home, to carry home

There are three rock singers post-Morrison who I always associate with Jim Morrison - Ian Curtis (Joy Division), Ian Astbury (The Cult), and Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, solo, etc.). Lanegan probably had the best voice of the three, and IMO the best voice of any of the "grunge" or early 1990s "Seattle scene" singers, including Chris Cornell (who himself had an amazing voice).

When I saw them open for Soul Asylum and Spin Doctors in the 90s they opened with this song.. Blew me away.. I saw them at Carowinds amusement park in Charlotte, NC.. It was called the Alternative Nations tour I believe..

Lmao@Spin Doctors. You definitely got some strange pairings as the pop-'80s bled into the grunge-'90s.

I watched this old doc on the muscle shoals studio musicians and one of the guys from it said that you can usually here the environment where the artist grew up in through their music . He was talking about the down south country fried rock/ blues but that man was exactly right . Having grew up in WA state this song is very symbolic of the moderate/Rainy/ chilly environment for which the trees come from . And yes I know they cane from eastern Wa

His vocals are haunting, rough, and gritty. But he has amazing range, and his solo career after the Screaming Trees was epic. Few artists grabbed my attention from the get-go, and Mark Lanegan was truly someone I looked up to, musically speaking. It’s incredible to me that a band that fought so much was able to make music that would stick with me all my life. His passing was sudden, and gave me pause. I couldn’t know a musical world without him, but I ducked back into his catalogue of music, and found myself at home. He was the first vocalist whose lyrics I paid close attention to. R.I.P.

Mark Lanegan my favorite singer. I loved his imperfect, rustic voice. I'm so devastated. His story has gotten me through hard times. Screaming trees came on the scene for me in early 90s. A guy at a record shop turned me on to them. I've been obsessed since. Never get tired of them
