I think, unfortunately, because none of them publicly struggled with addiction, nor did their lyrics invoke the same teen angst as the other bands of the time. The fact Screaming Trees was really conveying a deeper and more universally relatable adult insight to life, is actually what kept them from selling more. Kids want simple sadness that doesn't require much thought...that's what sells

Simply put, this is the most underrated band of all time. I grew up in the early to mid 90s and for the life of me, I cannot understand why they werent absolutely huge. Phenomenal band.
I was in 10th grade when the whole grunge thing happened and rock music became king again. The Trees have a special place that none of my other favorite bands never have. I like all the old stuff...doors, hendrix, zep, fleet, beatles, stones and theres STP, Chains, Trees, N and some hate PJ for some reason yet they got their place in my heart too. Never forget the first time I heard "alive" on a youth convention in the mountains w the unitarian church. The trees make me think of how a dream I had recently made me feel....one parent was going one way and the other was going the other and I had to choose which one I wanted to be with....but I didn't want to choose I was just a kid. Then I'm not a kid anymore, I'm somewhere I can smell that smell you smell by railroad tracks and I'm just walking the tracks looking down wishing I could just back to where it all went wrong. Its Autumn and you can see into other people's houses as dusk brings on the night, families are together people seem happy..yet I feel as far removed from people as stars must seem to families. Life goes on, people die alone watching tv. Days are shelter to feather a nest as people make sure they have retirement funds and agreeable smiles....they told me once I wasn't agreeable, yet I kept my mouth shut, still doing the math on that one! The wind is blowing, I'm cold but the smell of leaves is bittersweet, sweet but old enough to know the truth. The truth is cold....some boys never get to hold a girl's hand or have a father, some become crazy but make it out alive in prison and some only smile where the others aren't so they don't have to feel at all when in the presence of the insane.....happy faces.
Why is it a shame? That these little gems aren't well known is what makes them special to people like us.. These songs attract a certain kind of person. If it was popular mass market it wouldn't be the same.
this song reminds me of his solo song Strange Religion and especially the line "Some jack of diamonds kicked her heart around Did they know they were walking on holy ground?"
If you like the lead singer, whose name is Mark Lanegan, check out the band Mad Season. They are a 90's super group whose lead singer is Layne Staley from AIC in most songs, but Mark Lanegan sings on a couple of their songs, such as one called Long Gone Day. Check 'em out!
