3 singers and artists that can never be replaced layne Stayley kurt Cobain and axl rose I hope people diss agree cause if they do they obviously don't no anything about true great music peace out rest in peace and keep on rockin
15 months clean from heroin, suboxone, crystal, coke, etc. Sitting here blessed for this music as I wrap up my 4th step. I wish you could have gotten the help that I found Layne. Your music will always be remembered.
Congrats man. It's a miracle you got sober from probably the hardest substances to get clean from. I hope you are still sober... Remember, we only have today brother.
Embrace him every chance you get. I stopped drinking on April 22 2006 when my son Kurt was born. Unfortunately COVID took him January 4th 2020. Am now back to drinking and am sad everyday.... Alcohol makes me not ruminate, yet at the same time, makes it so much worse 😢
514 days sober. And not a day goes by without playing this song. Layne We never met on this earth but you changed my life in ways I wish you could have done for yourself.
Greatest voice ever !!!!!!!!! My jam , fly so Fuc high kk , my 1 , my love my little girl , Murdered …. 5 5 21 , all the colors r gone , turn black n faded ……
This is the most beautiful comment section on RUclips. 99% are positive and uplifting. Clearly, Layne Staley touched so many folks with his voice and lyrics. Peace and Love. 90s were awesome 👍
@username5353 no what. Weed definitely fucks with your dopamine receptors and your frontal lobe in different underrated ways. Alcohol does also, but it takes some serious drinking
i just relapsed after 10 weeks clean from a year of using, before that I was over 10 years clean, I wanted a stupid visit and almost died 6 days ago and am back on the wagon. heroin addiction is a heartless bitch!
@@tappytibbon927 yes man and real heroin is hardly around anymore so you probably did Phent for the first time. It's a bit of a different animal and shooting it is honestly overkill because it's no joke. Getting off it is by far the hardest thing I've had to do in life. Stick with your sobriety. The relapse never ends up being worth it
You gotta be careful on them wagons. Safety is priority number one. Just kidding glad you got back on. As for myself I can't find a good seat on the wagon because I keep falling & by this point I don't know if I want to make the effort to climb back on. Have a good day all & thank you Mr. Staley for being the soundtrack to my youth
Keep on fighting ..unfortunately My son lost his battle 2 yrs ago... it shattered the family's lives. I pray for strength for anyone suffering from addiction and the family's hurting from it..proud of you
It’s 2023. I’ve finally decided I want to get clean from self-harm. The album this song belongs to has greatly helped me so far and it’s only been 4 days. Thank you, Mad Season
Remember it's a long road. But when you fail, just remember you're not a failure. You might not but a lot of us do fall back on old habits. You're a strong person for doing it. Be the best cheerleader for yourself.
@@psillymama Remember you can taper if it gets hard. Just never fall back on old habits, find a hobby. I took up fishkeeping lol. They give me a reason to live now. Just watching them and knowing I gotta be around to care for them helps me continue. Plus it's a major stress reliever. But choose something that you'll enjoy and preoccupy your time.
someday we wont have to do this; there will be fun drugs with no negative consequences. It's not wrong to want to alter one's mind; just so far the only ways to do it usually turn out badly but if you look at all of human history, we are still in the primitive experimental stages of discovering and creating mind altering substances. We'll get it down eventually and life will be better.
I'm so glad that you are doing well, and it's so good of you to share your experience here for those who are struggling with the monster. Best wishes for a great 2022. 🌈
Michael Nocito I hate I never got to see them when he was still alive, my biggest regret to date, and I’m 39. I don’t even want to see them with their new singer. In my humble opinion Layne was Alice In Chains. I know I know they were a team but he made them what they became
It was shitty alice in chains were invited to the grammys, during a segment in the show where they remembered artists lost during the year, mentioned nothing at all about layne, total bullshit, jerry and the rest of the band got up n walked out.
@@bobbywhiteman9421 its a blessing to meet real true friends who want nothing but the best for you in life, friends who stick by your side in your time of need, friends that want to see you succeed in life and uplift you and honor your memory in death. Nothing but respect for alice in chains
IMO, the greatest “feel” singer ever. No one touches Layne’s ability to go from utter despair and tenderness to a screaming Angel. There will never be another Layne Staley. He gave us in a short period of time some of the greatest male vocals ever created.
I agree. His voice gets to me. Wish he could’ve somehow survived. Every time I think of him and his death it just makes sad ...about someone I didn’t even know. I liked AIC when they came out but I didn’t become a true follower until after he was did. I researched them and especially him. He seemed like a sweet but lost tortured soul. The unplugged session was THE best by any band grunge or not. He really came through. What a voice and what a artist and idealist. RIP LS MS
Dylan I met Staley in Nashville as well as all of AIC and Blind Melon in Nashville Summer of 92....great memories.....Hoon was the coolest of all of them...
I sincerely hope there's an afterlife in the hopes that Layne found the peace he deserved. Rest easy, Mr Staley. You're loved more than you could imagine.
I'm an addiction counsellor in a rehab. I come here sometimes to allow myself a bit of time to think about the clients we've lost over the years. What a beautiful song.
+wwaldo2525 Was looking at 100 greatest vocalists by RS, and they failed to mention Layne Stayley. Although he does get recognition from most critics and fans he gets overshadowed a bit by other musicians from that time. Imo he's 1 of the best vocalists ever.
Mike McReady really is a beautiful person. He created a band for Layne to be surrounded by other sober musicians after leaving rehab. Thank you, Mike. What a fantastic band, too. River of Deceit has a special place in my heart
@@michaelbergeron1554 Layne knew mike already but they formed the band in rehab.Mike stayed sober unfortunately Layne did not. That's why they used footage of a performance of this song in the video.
My grandfather hated grunge and any bands similar to grunge, but i loved them. He showed me mad season one day, saying this was the only song he really liked from someone who came from grunge. He’s no longer with us, but this song will always be with me:)
@devil rain I agree with you. I don't see them as grunge either. I think what throws people off is the strong yarl in layne's vocals. It's very grunge like.
Yes pain is pleasure.......untill you overdose on pain.and yes I chose pain at times but never turn your back........junkies say dopes no good if it don't kill you..Beware loved ones..
Clean for 3 years now,my pockets full, doing great,so the perfect say,,,then why am I so emptyand missing something?I will return one day to what some would call madness, and others call denial or relapse.so I guess my pain was is and will be self chosen
@@darrinwest6757 we all feel empty sometimes. i don't use anything beside grass though i have tried some others, but i know that feeling and to me it has nothing to do with drugs, it's about not fitting in this society or not getting what gives you joy. it sounds stupid but money can't get you anything.
When he says near the end OUR pain is self chosen really hit me. Not only his personal struggles but the struggles we put opon ourselves and others. 2020. What a timely message.
You should, it is a powerful introspection sparked by an incredible author - Kahlil Gibran This song quotes the "On Pain" section of Gibran's classic, The Prophet (which lent itself to the lyrics "or so The Prophet says" in this song).
It never occured to me this song is about drugs for the longest time. still don't know if it is for sure but it could be. We all have our sins, and pain.
@@vettemuziekjesIn an interview the interviewer asked Layne what one of his songs was about. He asked her what she thought it was about. After answering his question he told her that she was right. Asked to explain further Layne told her that the songs meaning is meant to be derived by the person listening to it. Sure, he wrote the songs based off of his own life experiences but theyre simple in their messages for a reason. So many people can relate to them. Think of the song 'Would' for example, if you read the lyrics to that i believe everyone in the world can relate to that song and derive meaning from it that applies to their life in some way.
It's 2:36 in the morning and I am holding my 2 week old daughter as she sleeps in the corner of my arm, listening to this. Her middle name is Layne. Everyone who hears it (her name) has had nothing but praise. My way of honoring his legacy.
I find that people alwaysassociate drug abuse with the satan. And addicts are less than. There is no vod and some people like that opiod feeling. 88866 that wierd god satan complex some people just like to get high you dont know when ur dead
I'm a 37 year old widow with an 18 year old son. My husband who is still the love of my life died on March 15 2017 after a 5 year battle with cancer . For some reason this song always reminds me of him and I wish we had just one more day with him. RIP Jamal Islam Hajoui and RIP Layne.
Suhishan Bhandari, I have read that book! It's great huh? I love Mad Season & Alice in Chains as I love Layne Stayle and Chris Cornell. But this song is rally something else. "The River of Deceit".
I’m literally crying reading all of your sobriety stories and their lines to Mad Season. Congratulations to you all. It’s beautiful to read. Thank you.
Missing Layne and Kurt and Chris in Feb 21. Missing so very many more beautiful souls too.. Though we don't have them here each day in our lives..I believe that their souls live on forever.. rest in peace brothers 🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯🕯
Layne's voice is so perfect on this whole album. It's a masterpiece, although a very sad one at times. We lost so many great people to their demons. Hope y'all reading this are holding your own against those demons. We all got this!
Gahhhh! I can't believe how good this song is. This music. This message. My husband is 20 years clean and sober this year. Losing him to addiction was entirely possible. Today he is a beautiful, loving, healthy, caring, providing husband to me and an incredible, nurturing father to 5 children ages 5-29. We both came of age in the 90s. Oh Layne and family, your journey is not in vain. Let us all hold the addicts in kindness and compassion....
powerful message, thank you for sharing, blessings to you and your family. I completely agree that we should hold addicts in kindness and compassion...
I love this message..I work in a store where a lot of addicts come to sell stamps for money and bring in change for another beer. I don't know how many times I educate my coworkers on addiction and how there isn't a choice while in it's grasp until there is a spiritual intervention of sorts..I was an addict and I know how easy it is to slip from taking a few pills to get through the day to selling your kids stuff to get that through the next few hours...unless you have been through it it's really indescribable with words.
@@leeannasloan2292 Yes, it is a disease. No one wants to be a drug addict. It is a complex physiological and mental and emotional problem. There is a lot of help out there. Anyone who is struggling should seek help from kind, competent mental health professionals.
@@xlukesnipes i have my dad to thank for that, my mother wouldve named me dalton. My dad was going to name me layne bradley brown. Bradley from sublime and of course Layne, one of if not the greatest singer of his generation
@@laynebrown2730 I've always said, if I ever have a son, I'm naming him Layne. I guess your dad had the same idea:). My favorite singer has to be Layne too. I wish I could have been around to hear him sing live. What's your favorite song of his?
@@shanghunter7697i hope you’re trolling because this is the most ridiculous comment I’ve ever read. He can be your inspiration (he is mine) and you can try to emulate his voice and his style but to say you sing exactly like him is just not true. You might sound similar and you might have an incredible voice but NO ONE will ever sing like Layne. He is truly a once in a millennia type of voice. I’m not trying to be rude, I am just trying to point out how out of this world he was as a vocalist. I try to sound like him when I cover AiC songs but I know I’ll never come close to him. I hope you continue to sing as will I, and we can both strive to be like Layne. Cheers
Never ever ever will there be another like Layne. The range, the feel, the raw power and the emotion is in every single word he sang. He has such a great sense for the “wrong” note that creates the dissonant sound and creepy atmosphere. His harmonies with Jerry were just perfect and I will never get tired of listening to their music. Cheers 🍻
This is one of those songs that keep you in your car listening til the end, sitting in your driveway at home after a long day at work. You don't dare get out before it's completely over.. to the last note. We love you, Layne.
Here I thought everybody had probably forgotten about this hauntingly excellent song by now, but now I find out that it has 19 million+ views on RUclips. I guess there's hope for the future of rock and roll yet.
There was a long stretch of years I remembered this song but did not know who it was by and couldn't find it. I knew it was Layne but it was not AIC. I remember sitting in my car as a teen listing to this when it first came out and loved it. So much joy when I finally found it again.
I remember the exact moment I heard this song the first time. It was about 1995 and me and my then boyfriend were going somewhere and it came on the car radio. I couldnt absorb how utterly beautiful it was and Layne' s voice was mesmerizing. Ive been listening ever since. It never gets old it only gets more beautiful. Its a masterpiece. Rest in peace and love, Layne.
Layne had the most unique voice. You really can feel the music. He was such a vibrant talent. So sorry he was unable to beat his addiction for good. He suffered to the end. Rest in peace. You still are loved by many.🤟💔
25 years + 363 days clean, and this song still makes me cry. Feel it in my soul, can so relate to this pain. I am so grateful for every day since the last day I was high.
I'm right with you . Doesn't matter how many times I play it , my eyes stay teared up. I'm not the crying type and maybe that has something to do with it. It just hits different than any song I've ever heard.
This is a masterpiece of art. A beautiful soul and voice confessing his struggles. I have been sober for 3 years..I have lost all of my best friends. How I was left standing I don't know. Layne was a beautiful soul and so we're my friends. I wish they had the chance. But I'm glad I got this chance and I'm grateful Layne left this beautiful song for the people who can relate. It tells a beautiful story and I'm sorry if you haven't been down the dark road you just wouldn't fully understand the beauty of his confession. 3 years sober and I promise deep down I still have a deep yearning for the bliss of heroin the samething that has ripped my heart and soul and caused so much pain. Why is that? It is a river of deceit. That is Layne's same confession in this song. Much love my friends. There is another way.
Hunter Mays battled those same demons off and on for years. Lost a lot of buddies along the way as well. I didn't care if I lived pretty much all my life until Christ opened my eyes.
Yep I been sober heroin free for 10 yrs and still i fight my demons not to try it again. That's how I'm gonna be till the day I die. I wish he could've been saved. I felt lonely back then now I have a nice family and friends. Lance Staley one of the greatest of all time
This song makes me cry like a little kid Every time I listen to it I miss all my friends I'm not a good person and I'm still here and there all gone fuck heroin and everything about it
Beautiful in everyway I love everything he did he just got out of touch I know Jesus Christ New his pain he has mercy and grace for us all see you rocking in heaven and I'm so glad the angles will be glad to have such a wonderful voice too sing along with them as there praising the Lord Amen
Hands down one of the greatest songs ever written. His voice is so perfect. The way he sings “a beautiful shell for all to see” gets me every single time.
Tom Pen I know. I love it when the G string rings like a steel rail that got a shock wave cast through it. Open G string with a D played on the B string, 3rd fret. Just those two notes alone let you know what awesomeness has yet to come.
This song purges the pain from deep within. We are made of water and that is energy. Tears fill up with sadness and purge from your eyes. Literally pouring pain from the doorway to your soul
After an intervention by my family and sent to a rehab facility in FL for an opioid addiction I was allowed music for 1 hr a week this song was the one I played over and over. Away from family and friends this song really hit home. This is how you feel when you know you have to make that decision to get your shit together or your going to die eventually, or end up in prison. 4 yrs clean now still makes me almost cry when hearing it!! Now looking back at everything that was lost and hitting rock bottom the only direction was "Down so Down".
So happy for you! Although I think being able to listen to 1 hour a week of music is a little harsh - music is therapeutic and helps with pain and mood regulation. But I get that facilities have to make a structure .
he was so incredibly beautiful...Layne Staley had a unique sound that we'll probably never hear again unless we are listening to him singing...brings tears to my eyes still when i listen to his voice ..mostly so sad and dark with him singing his soul out..sleep in peace sweet man xxx
It's a gift not a curse. Embrace the emotions!! Use the feelings that are beneficial, discard the rest...It's better to be able feel than feel nothing or little.
I gave this cs to a young heroin addict a couple years ago, broken living on the streets, im 52. He is now 7 years clean , married, father of 2 and a guitarist at church.
Layne is with every great artits and there is all THE IS A LOT FOR HIM, CHRIS, CURT, MARK STAR, CHARLIE WATTS AND MY ALL TIME FAVORITE STEVIE RAY VAGHAN I I would really LOVE TO FiND my WAY THEREbest thing that could happen ro me
I can understand. This song is so powerful thanks to Layne's vocals it just about brings me to tears. We've lost one of the greatest of our generation.
This song reminds me of a tough time as a teenager when I was trying to figure my life out, and 30 years later, I still haven't. Kudos to everyone posting their sobriety notes. I envy you.
It's not easy. Life is struggle, but keep trying, and find something that works for YOU. No two humans are identical, and there is no "one size fits all" approach to figuring it out, so to speak, and finding some type of happiness or inner peace. Keep fighting! ✊
"A head full of lies is a weight, tied to my waist." Man. Layne Staley had a gift, that's for sure. Music like this just doesn't seem to happen anymore. What a loss.
+Digishade 99.9% People aren't able to be authentic like this in the 1st world, very few are, unrelenting media exposure via smart-phones encourage people to stay in an infantile regressive state, they are programmed to be consumerist and conformative and co-validate through that and that alone. You would have to maroon those types of people alone on an island like in Cast-away for them to come back into reality
+Digishade there's heaps of music out there which shows the same passion as what Layne had. Listen to Gang of Youths, good place to start if you want some very emotionally charged, relatable rock music
To all the people that are coming here with a struggle: You are loved. You are needed. Your are wanted. Though it may not seem like it, a light is there at you back. The warmth of your day is coming. Don't give up. Don't stop fighting for yourself. Just wait... It will come. With hope and love I pray for your sun to rise quickly and it's setting to come slow. There is no such thing as a failure that keeps trying. You got this!
A few years after I first heard this song, I read The Prophet by Khalil Gibran and realised this song was directly referring to this poem. It was such a revelation for me, as I read it, I could hear Layne’s words in my ears. And a woman spoke, saying, Tell us of Pain. And he said: Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding. Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain. And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy; And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields. And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief. Much of your pain is self-chosen. It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self. Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility: For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen, And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears. RIP Layne Staley, 20 years since you walked this Earth but your presence is still felt.
Man I miss his voice ... cuts right through my cold black dead heart to the few remaining tattered shreds of my soul. RIP Layne. You are still deeply loved and missed.
But listen, if you have never walked the road of addiction then PLEASE don't judge someone else who has. I agree 110% the world truly lost a BEAUTIFUL soul with an amazing voice.. his pain is so REAL and you can feel it.. I LOVED Layne... there will NEVER EVER be another musician with that gorgeous yet painful sound.. there needs to be more options for Addicts of all kinds.. heroin, opiates, crack, coke, meth, alcohol etc.. People don't just wake up one morning and say Hey, I think I will get strung out today n ruin my life.. I am speaking from experience.. I was an opiate addict for 6 years and my doctor was my dealer.. I had a severe back injury and seen multiple doctors for different opinions bcuz I absolutely did not want to undergo surgery.. so instead of my doctor educating me and taking other routes and exploring different options available for me, he just kept writing scripts.. before I knew it I was an addict.. I couldn't function without the meds, I would get extremely sick of I ran out and it was HORRIBLE.. I finally had to make a HUGE decision to move away from everyone I knew and loved to get myself some help. I couldn't go on like I was anymore. I was hurting my husband and children so bad that I had to do it for THEM, as well as myself. I am happy to say that 4/1/17 will be 3 years clean for me! It hasn't been easy but I have a wonderful support system, my husband, children, and a few REAL friends. I wish someone could have helped Layne.. I know that struggle and it kills me that we lost him to the addiction, he truly was AMAZING.. RIP LAYNE
"I could either drown or pull off my skin and swim to shore... Now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see" This line helped pull me out of some rough mental times along the path of life. RIP Layne
12 years heroin free. Thank u Layne for recognizing and articulating the pain that only a certain group of people know. Layne was the spokesman for so many of us and still is, always will be. The ones that recover, remember his lyrics and the way his voice embodied the pain of so many. Thats why we never forget Layne and his music will always play on. 🎤❤️🩹

I come to this comment section every time I’m about to cross the tracks. Addiction has had a strangle hold on me for such a long time. I lost my mother to addiction and then I began to follow her same path. Then I lost my wife because of decisions fueled by addiction. All of my pain has been self chosen and it’s too much to bear sometimes. God’s grace and knowing I’m not struggling alone is enough to get me through my roughest days. I was so lost and hopelessly drowning in the River of deceit. God’s grace finally found me and I was able to swim to shore. Thank you all for sharing your testimonies. It has helped me more than you know! RIP Layne
Jon Jacobs - please brother. You are worth it. Your life is worth it. You just haven’t experienced a life yet worth living. Maybe it’s finding a love. Maybe it’s finding a thing in life that makes you feel like life is worth living. I pray for you. Maybe today can be the beginning of something new.
Lol,can you believe Layne Staley made up those lyrics ad lib.? Yup, He actually wrote a song that good , just off the cuff...That's serious talent man. Aghh.. so many of our best talents died so young. Bro,, they really burned their candles on all sides at once.
This song along with Nutshell are so haunting to me now... he is by far the most under rated singer from the Seattle sound, ill get shit for this but I rank Layne higher than Kurt C....
I have been a heroin addict for 4 years, a speedball addict for 1 and a half, addicted to oxys and percs etc for 6 years before heroin. I've been to jail, lost jobs, destroyed my family, life, but AIC and Mad Season help me make sense of my senseless addiction and where I've been and gone and am going. A person who hasn't been there doesn't know and never will.
well sir getting help is a good idea methadone is a bad drug to it is just as hard to get off of the best way is go thru detox and in treatment someplace I have been down that road and in the end this is what I had to do its not easy but nothing good ever is easy I have been clean for over three years and it is still a fight every day good luck with your fight
William E I’ve been clean from heroin for 6 years. I remember when I was using, I just wanted to feel like how I felt before I got on dope. And now I feel like I was never on it. This clean life is amazing. Please do this!! This side is beautiful

6 Years sober from crystal meth and alcohol. I try to be careful with this kinda music now a days because although it reminds me of SOOO many good times, it also reminds me of the painful ones. I can enjoy songs like these for some time, but not long enough to let the demons back in I guess. But thats just me. It's amazing how powerful music is.

we can't be a pussy in life, if I get knocked down it doesn't mean I'm knocked out. I get the fuck up brush myself off and try again. I'm not going to let some dumbass person ruin my turn to bat in life. hate isn't the answer and if you don't love yourself your going to strike out every time. we can never give up on ourselves and God will always give us more than 3 stiles.
For anyone who doesn't know, Layne Staley was asked by his friend Mike McCready (Pearl Jam Guitarist) to lead this band in an attempt to get him sober. McCready himself had recently become sober and was making an attempt to save Staley. They made some great music...but he couldn't save his friend.... :'(
he was 'too good' to save..but the human psyche will never register that as an answer in the 21st century. all the great or notable (or not notable) vocalists or instrumentalists delved into some drug. not everybody came out about it, but some had their bandmates come out for them. these drug users knew exactly how and why. they knew exactly when and where. because the SUBSTANCE HEIGHTENED THEM. this doesn't just apply to Rockstars, you know, so don't get prejudice on me. don't get sour on me because of an opinion. you're damned if you do, not damned if you dont. they were human beings who, at a basic level, DID NOT want to live past a certain age. they already had a branded fucking message engraved deep within their livelihoods to support this until they made their decision. they didn't wanna live past a certain age and live out the remainder or their conscious lives encapsulated within the 'getting old' syndrome which included gooey bodies, less active mentalities, prone to disease, etc. I don't fucking want that. it's unavoidable so don't try and sway me or enlighten me. shut up and let me talk cuz this is what 'Social Media' is about. then it's your turn. believe it or not, evolving (physically, mentally, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually) happens to everything that our species considers living. what a shocker hey lol. but the synopsis here is this: drugs can dominant your thinking patterns to be this way. I am a user of 'drugs'. why is it the so called creative ones who die or whatever so early? is it drugs? is it selfishness? what a stupid question..of course it is!! but it is Human Nature To Be Selfish. Let us choose. We're our own owners of Being. So live out exact and direct in correlation with your manifested Being, and make the most of this reality.
Anybody who has overcome an addiction can relate to this song. And appreciate what was being said here and sang by a man who fought his own demons. I'm happy to say I've been sober over 5 years now and there is help out there for you if you can first accept you have a problem and want to change. R.i.p Layne....
I love that he mastered the soft singing. He proved in this song that sometimes belting isn't always the most effective way to grab people's attention. The soft, quiet vocals really capture the message he's trying to convey. Brilliantly composed. ❤️

Sure, he wrote the songs based off of his own life experiences but theyre simple in their messages for a reason. So many people can relate to them. Yep I been sober heroin free for 10 yrs and still i fight my demons not to try it again. That's how I'm gonna be till the day I die. I wish he could've been saved. I felt lonely back then now I have a nice family and friends. Lance Staley one of the greatest of all time

This song makes me cry like a little kid Every time I listen to it I miss all my friends I'm not a good person and I'm still here and there all gone fuck heroin and everything about it
Those opening notes put me right back in 1995. Music is the closest thing we’ll ever have to time travel.
Aw Layne, I wish you could have found a way.
Miss you Layne.

Beautiful comment, there will never be another Layne Staley...
Hands down one of the greatest songs ever written. His voice is so perfect. The way he sings “a beautiful shell for all to see” gets me every single time.

Tell your Dad we said thank you!
LMAO...Okay noob
19 years clean from Heroin. Layne’s music helped pull the poison from my soul. I grieve for him.
The opening guitar playing is moving beyond words
Tom Pen I know. I love it when the G string rings like a steel rail that got a shock wave cast through it.
Open G string with a D played on the B string, 3rd fret.
Just those two notes alone let you know what awesomeness has yet to come.
+Tom Pen That's Mike McCready for you.

Take me back to the 1990’s. I was a resident when the grunge scene blew up here. Amazing time. A musical renaissance. The air was electric.
It was the last really good era of rock music
"The air was electric"
brought a tear to my eye
I got here on Aug 18th 92 - Seattle and didn't even know about this music - it was great and still is.
I doubt you look like your pic now... a time from the past.
A good era in Rock music! Post punk
This song purges the pain from deep within. We are made of water and that is energy. Tears fill up with sadness and purge from your eyes. Literally pouring pain from the doorway to your soul
Well said brother
Well said dude
This song hurts my soul knowing what he was going through, and being an addict too.
that is fucking beautiful and true
Best comment 🤘
This song has one of the most beautiful riffs in music history. It exhales the pure scent of Seattle Grunge.
😈💀💀👁️✌️🇺🇸🆒
Glad to hear you’re better bud
So happy for you! Although I think being able to listen to 1 hour a week of music is a little harsh - music is therapeutic and helps with pain and mood regulation. But I get that facilities have to make a structure .
@@wplants9793 they do it so you don't use it as an escape from handling your issues that you need to deal with. Harsh has nothing to do with it.

Too bad he passed away
he was so incredibly beautiful...Layne Staley had a unique sound that we'll probably never hear again unless we are listening to him singing...brings tears to my eyes still when i listen to his voice ..mostly so sad and dark with him singing his soul out..sleep in peace sweet man xxx

You can do it.

You got this!
i know its been 11 months since u commented, but thank you so much for this.
A few years after I first heard this song, I read The Prophet by Khalil Gibran and realised this song was directly referring to this poem. It was such a revelation for me, as I read it, I could hear Layne’s words in my ears.
And a woman spoke, saying, Tell us of Pain.
And he said:
Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.
Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.
And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy;
And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.
And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.
Much of your pain is self-chosen.
It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.
Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility:
For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen,
And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears.
RIP Layne Staley, 20 years since you walked this Earth but your presence is still felt.

Steve Sullivan well put sir
nicely put wish he would have realized he wasn't alone but I'm pretty sure he felt that way fuck heroin nasty ass drug anyway
Steve Sullivan exactly you can't sing the blues, Without living them.
RIP LAYNE
Steve Sullivan you post this same comment on every song with layne in it wtf😂
"I could either drown or pull off my skin and swim to shore... Now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see" This line helped pull me out of some rough mental times along the path of life. RIP Layne

RIP Layne

YoothHD did not know that, thanks for sharing.
YoothHD the only way to become sober is to trust in Jesus Christ. You have to humble yourself and cry out for help for the Lord's help.
Marco Coronado your right!!! You've GOTTA have the Big Mans help to escape that devastation..
he was 'too good' to save..but the human psyche will never register that as an answer in the 21st century. all the great or notable (or not notable) vocalists or instrumentalists delved into some drug. not everybody came out about it, but some had their bandmates come out for them. these drug users knew exactly how and why. they knew exactly when and where. because the SUBSTANCE HEIGHTENED THEM. this doesn't just apply to Rockstars, you know, so don't get prejudice on me. don't get sour on me because of an opinion. you're damned if you do, not damned if you dont.
they were human beings who, at a basic level, DID NOT want to live past a certain age. they already had a branded fucking message engraved deep within their livelihoods to support this until they made their decision. they didn't wanna live past a certain age and live out the remainder or their conscious lives encapsulated within the 'getting old' syndrome which included gooey bodies, less active mentalities, prone to disease, etc.
No. Just fucking no. I and other get clean without fairy tale nonsense. There are many ways that work for different people. Stop with the bullshit.
