    I love the ease with which she plays. She doesn't turn playing the piano into a wrestling match the way so many male pianists feel the need. She is confident, and she is a vessel for channeling the music to us. Enchanting performance!

    I've always found the Mozart variations among his least interesting works, but Virsaladze makes the «Lison dormait» variations sparkling and delightful. It takes real talent to make even minor works shine.

    In my (humble) opinion, this is the greatest pianist of her generation. The intelligence, the artistry, heart and imagination - as well as consummate technical refinement - are all there. Invidious to compare with another artist, but I would say Annie Fischer from the generation before; there is complete, direct communicative, music-making, and in Mozart - the hardest challenge for us all. Sviatoslav Richter thought so too, so there!

      She should be every bit as famous as Argerich, but for whatever reason she's just not in the same kind of demand. Perhaps she doesn't want to perform as much? I don't know. I just think she's absolutely phenomenal. I love Argerich too of course, they're stylistically worlds apart but of equal quality.

      A pianist whose musical interpretations I fell in love with is Mark Westcott. I couldn't believe the daring passion in some of his recordings. He didn't make it to fame because of a series of really unfortunate events including a 15 year battle with cancer. I love his Saint-saens, Brahms, grieg, beethoven and barber concertos. His Gaspard, Beethoven Op. 101. Incredible. Worth a listen if you can find the recordings!

      @@josephfleetwood3882 When are people going to reach these conclusions.What are the reasons? I love Argerich too and totally agree that she is her equal.We need to consider the roles of piano competitions and the type of channeling of the composers intentions that is taking place here.My final analysis on the situation is this... the type of piano playing that Chopin would have approved of, I think,is this..she has everything deep poetical insight, phenomenal technique and incredible intelligence..the whole package that is sadly no longer sufficiently valued...at least I dont think so but others may beg to disagree I'm listening anew to Chopin under those singing fingers of hers!!

    • @josephfleetwood3882
      @josephfleetwood3882 3 года назад +5

      @@RosemaryThomas1 Oh Rosemary I couldn't agree more! Argerich and Virsaladze are not comparable with each other in reality. It would be like comparing Argerich to Pires or Kissin, and trying to decide who is better. Who is the better painter? Monet or Degas? Who makes a better piano? Bechstein or Blüthner? It's really diversity amongst equals. What I'm sure of is that I don't agree with what fashions in piano playing have become over the last 20 years in particular. It feels like whole pieces are being played in one long phrase, with no concern for the motif, for space, for colour, for anything other than a kind of virtuosity that is defined by speed alone. There are some beautiful techniques out there, but there are few artists anymore. I'm doing a study at the moment on early 20th Century performance practice with regard to the pupils of Liszt and the playing of Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, Igumnov, Goldenweiser, Siloti, and others. I think that by looking back to that school of playing we can consider in what other directions it might have developed had there not been a prevailing aesthetic governed by piano competitions and the rise of the USSR. The USSR obviously produced some of the finest pianists of the mid to late 20th century, but there wasn't much variety between them, if you know what I mean. Brilliant, but all kind of uniform. I'd like to consider how it might have been if we'd placed greater value diversity of interpretation.

    • @RosemaryThomas1
      @RosemaryThomas1 3 года назад +2

      @@josephfleetwood3882 Greatly appreciate that you are engaged in this study which is of such importance!! I totally agree with you on everything.I often think of what Bartok said in respect of these competitions..i.e.they are for training horses, albeit thoroughbreds to win fame for their stables.I feel it would all fill Chopin with contempt aristocrat of the piano that he was.Say what you like, the formidable techniques don't always result in producing truly aesthetic beauty because the goal and final aim is to impress all ,beat all the opposition off and decimate the cause of true pianistic art in the process by becoming the dominant voice...very sad!!!

    I hadn't heard this pianist before, she is excellent and manages to make the Mozart variations sound interesting. Really enjoyed the other Mozart and the Chopin too. She should surely be more well known than she is. I guess the world of top concert pianists is a crowded one. I wonder if it is still that little bit harder for women pianists to make it to the top and then stay there.
