This phenomenal artist passed away precisely 20 years ago. His great art continues to live. Unfortunately, so few people are capable of appreciating it.
Sviatoslav Richter the best pianist ...forever.
I am at age 84, and I still appreciate Sviatoslav Richter!
I'm not a fan of cults, in general. But there are exceptions. If there's a Richter cult, I happily declare my membership.
Until 1960 all pianists sounded good to me until I discovered Richter. Then in the 70's I couldn't tolerate most pianists. This happens to you once start listening to Richter. Today I can listen to Yuja Wang as long as I can get back to Richter.
From the day when he still played under normal lighting and without the music in front of him! What a giant among pianists.
Sviatoslav Richter was the epitome of what classical pianist is. Years of studying and the being consumed by the artistry of magnificent layers of colors that only come within those of genius. Elements of touches of the soul within that flow threw the energy each touch of finger tips of the gods and beyond. ❤ Bravo 👏
the great richter
Glenn Gould said he had been almost hypnotized by Richter's performance at the Moscow Conservatory in 1957.
There are those pianists which you just wish you had managed to hear live at some point. Richter is one of those for me, came here from that incredible Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto no 1 with von Karajan and the Vienna Symphony from 1962. I would also love to have heard Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli live too. As a young child I did hear Artur Rubinstein, it was a long time ago but I know he played some Chopin ! Thanks for posting this outstanding Beethoven recital by Richter.
I heard Richter once and will never forget it. He was everything his recordings had led you to expect and more. The miracle was how he was completely self-effacing and yet you knew were in the presence of a miracle. Musicianship, musical intelligence, technical problems completely surmounted. As close to perfection as one can expect in this life. Listen to his playing during Op. 26, it's like a great musician is in charge of each individual voice, treble and bass, and the balance between legato and staccato is just miraculous. Wit, playfulness and mischief that never descends into caricature. The word genius is overused, but, if any pianist was or will ever be worthy of the epithet, it was and is Sviatoslav Richter.
Richter's interpretation of Beethoven feels relaxed, clear, articulate and leaves enough breath for us to enjoy. The phrases he expresses are enough to enjoy any time of the day or night. Very nonchalantly is his style and always fantastic to listen to. It's as if he plays not just for show but for the love of the composer himself. What gems.
