In Indian classical music there is a word called Laya. Loosely, it means the lyrical cadence and a sense of flow created by how the rising and falling of notes are spaced and linked. Exactly as the inflections of human speech indicate emotions that are universally understood. So much emotion. So much feeling. The unhurried, deliberate spacing can only come from great control and musical authority. It is so hard for a popular and much performed piece to be played with originality but without making it weird. Only a very great artist can surprise one like that.

Ein kostbares Revival, dieses Konzerts aus dem Jahre 1960 im Prager Rudolfinum! Warum sollen uns die "Husterer" stören, wenn wir nochmal dem Spiel dieses Jahrhundertpianisten so lebendig nahe kommen? Den ganzen Balladenzyklus Chopins hat Richter nicht oft gespielt - dieses Genre "musste" aber seiner Spielweise besonders liegen: Das Pianoforte als Ausdruck seiner Poesie in einem beispiellosen Verbund von trefflich gestalteter musikalischer Epik, Dramatik und Lyrik.

I agree. especially the "note perfect" part. Horowitz is my favorite pianist and many of his performances are not note perfect. for those who crave note perfect there's always the MIDI version, which is unlistenable lol
I guess that's not the point. Of course precision is needed and important, but to a certain degree. When you achieve a certain precision level, even far from being perfect, the only thing that matters is your interpretation of the piece. A great interpretation will always be better than a perfectly played performance, as long as you don't just play random notes.

Великий Рихтер! Великий русский пианист. А слушают его записи почему-то больше англоязычные люди. Слушают, восторгаются. А где же русские зрители? Ау! Все упиваются западной же попсой.... Как-то несправедливо, неправильно. Рихтер ездил по СССР очень много. Играл даже в музыкальных школах. Люди старшего поколения помнят эти концерты (я живу в Красноярске). Хочется, чтобы и молодые люди не просто слышали имена, но и любили наших русских гениев и их искусство.
Живу в Москве. Начиная с сознательного возраста не пропускала концертов Рихтера в БЗК. И не видела в зале англоязычных - ну так, несколько иностранцев. А вот на отпевание великого маэстро в православном храме Иоанна-Воина на Якиманке пришли единицы. И сейчас о нём не услышите, как и о Пастернаке с Мандельштамом, которые тоже - вот беда! оказались православными. А «культурная» тусовка этого не прощает даже великим!

Much of Chopin's music is enigmatic to me. It can be immensly uplifting or it can be rather dry and tedious. The difference (in my view) is completely in the interpretation of the score. Two pianists possessing ample technic and one moves the universe and the other one I lose interest in. Richter's early recordings (like this one) are just sublime. Horowitz too, excelled at these.
I agree. To interiorize Chopin's music is to recreate the ideas for oneself, and to make authentic one's own experience so that the music serves the moment, in a vital and visceral way. Hard to do when one is not present or in touch with one's own pain. As this is Chopin's art, the ability to shine a light on intense emotional pain, the musician need only be clear about how this moves through him/her, and the music will then come out the way it is supposed to.
Wunderschöne und lyrische live Aufführung dieser vier romantischen und fein komponierten Balladen in verschiedenen Tempo mit brillantem doch zugleich anmutigem Klang des technisch perfekten Klaviers und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Die verbesserte Tonqualität ist auch ziemlich hoch als eine live Aufnahme von mehr als sechzig Jahren vor in Prag. Zweifellos einer der zehn besten Pianisten im 20. Jahrhundert!

On RUclips there is a nationally televised broadcast at Carnegie Hall of a concert from 1968 by Vladimir Horowitz and he opens with this Ballad..no. 1 in Gm, and I sincerely feel that it sounds like this performance by Richter. I have been a long time listener and amateur player and I can tell differences between great artists performing this piece..the nuances and dynamics..pedal usage..tempo, the little sparkling rubatos and, color... wow this sounded exactly like the 68 Horowitz version.
Trifinov and Kissin are not, in my humble opinion, even remotely of the calibre of Richter, and I doubt they would claim to be, let alone the very overrated Sokolov. The greats of the early 20C Russian school were pretty much in a class of their own. Zoltan Kocsis could be compared to Richter or Michelangeli, but I can't really think of anyone else in the last 50 years.or so
@@jeremyd1021 Tout à fait exact. Richter (Slava) était unique et dans les années 60 purement génial. Seul le “jeune” Michelangeli pouvait atteindre ce niveau de profondeur et d’intensité. Ce qui ne signifie pas que l’on ne puisse pas rencontrer ailleurs des interprétations bouleversantes et quelquefois miraculeuses, mais comparer Trifonov et Kissin à ce géant ne peut que faire sourire.
Michelangeli commented that Richter was the first pianist.... And no wonder... He approached live performances as life and death struggle living on the edge... A Titanic artist.
Richter's father Theofil Richter, a German national, was executed because he was unwilling to evacuate to the East. Thus, according to the red scumbags, "he was a collaborator, waiting for the German's arrival". The Richter's mother, with other man, evacuate with the German Army, feared of repercussions. After, they lived in Germany. The Richer's mother died c1961-62 in Germany. After illness and brief hospital stay, which was fully covered by Richter's money. Richter didn't know where exactly his mother was... until mid 50ies. Later they often meet, but Richter think of her like "for me, she is not the same person I knew".
Surely as great a combination of musician and pianist as we've ever seen. His playing seems, at its best, so inevitable. The tone is among the deepest of all pianists'. I don't find his Chopin as idiomatic as some others' ... (though Richter would laugh at the idea that one should respect idiom) ... but it still has extraordinary sincerity and power. So much power. Again, that inevitability.

Il me semble qu'il y en a un autre: C'est Claudio Arrau, plus "arrondi" que Richter et en général un peu plus lent, mais tout aussi intense.

リヒターは後年、日本にも興味がありました。
初来日は1970年、55歳の時です。
その時かどうかは不明ですが、日本の楽器メーカー、ヤマハのピアノに感心したことが切っ掛けでした。
ヤマハの工場を訪れてもいます。
その時、作業している人達に感謝の言葉を述べ、その場で即興で弾いてくれたそうです。
「この素晴らしいピアノを作った人々の前で演奏できることは光栄であり、私は大変緊張しています」と挨拶したそうです。
また神社にも関心があったそうで、多くの神社を訪れていたようです。
日本語で神社の雰囲気を表すのに使われる「おごそか」という言葉が好きだ とも語っていたそうです。

Much of Chopin's music is enigmatic to me. It can be immensly uplifting or it can be rather dry and tedious.
The difference (in my view) is completely in the interpretation of the score. Two pianists possessing ample technic and one moves the universe and the other one I lose interest in.
Richter's early recordings (like this one) are just sublime. Horowitz too, excelled at these.
I agree. To interiorize Chopin's music is to recreate the ideas for oneself, and to make authentic one's own experience so that the music serves the moment, in a vital and visceral way. Hard to do when one is not present or in touch with one's own pain. As this is Chopin's art, the ability to shine a light on intense emotional pain, the musician need only be clear about how this moves through him/her, and the music will then come out the way it is supposed to.
What else can you say except "Thank you, Maestro."

Wunderschöne und lyrische live Aufführung dieser vier romantischen und fein komponierten Balladen in verschiedenen Tempo mit brillantem doch zugleich anmutigem Klang des technisch perfekten Klaviers und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Die verbesserte Tonqualität ist auch ziemlich hoch als eine live Aufnahme von mehr als sechzig Jahren vor in Prag. Zweifellos einer der zehn besten Pianisten im 20. Jahrhundert!

Richter didn’t follow the traditional methods of working scales, but he definitely was not self-taught.

On RUclips there is a nationally televised broadcast at Carnegie Hall of a concert from 1968 by Vladimir Horowitz and he opens with this Ballad..no. 1 in Gm, and I sincerely feel that it sounds like this performance by Richter. I have been a long time listener and amateur player and I can tell differences between great artists performing this piece..the nuances and dynamics..pedal usage..tempo, the little sparkling rubatos and, color... wow this sounded exactly like the 68 Horowitz version.

Trifinov and Kissin are not, in my humble opinion, even remotely of the calibre of Richter, and I doubt they would claim to be, let alone the very overrated Sokolov. The greats of the early 20C Russian school were pretty much in a class of their own. Zoltan Kocsis could be compared to Richter or Michelangeli, but I can't really think of anyone else in the last 50 years.or so

Ce qui ne signifie pas que l’on ne puisse pas rencontrer ailleurs des interprétations bouleversantes et quelquefois miraculeuses, mais comparer Trifonov et Kissin à ce géant ne peut que faire sourire.

Richter's father Theofil Richter, a German national, was executed because he was unwilling to evacuate to the East. Thus, according to the red scumbags, "he was a collaborator, waiting for the German's arrival". The Richter's mother, with other man, evacuate with the German Army, feared of repercussions. After, they lived in Germany. The Richer's mother died c1961-62 in Germany. After illness and brief hospital stay, which was fully covered by Richter's money. Richter didn't know where exactly his mother was... until mid 50ies. Later they often meet, but Richter think of her like "for me, she is not the same person I knew".

Surely as great a combination of musician and pianist as we've ever seen. His playing seems, at its best, so inevitable. The tone is among the deepest of all pianists'. I don't find his Chopin as idiomatic as some others' ... (though Richter would laugh at the idea that one should respect idiom) ... but it still has extraordinary sincerity and power. So much power. Again, that inevitability.
