True. Many performers mistake Mozart for a "child"... and play accordingly. Mozart died young, and his music is "sweet", but it's not simply sweet. Mozart had a very , very mature emotional view and perception of the world around him. Richter, true to who he is, reflects this most important aspect in his performance! For me Richter died prematurely too!

Well, I was there in the 4th row, London 1989. The 2nd half were 12 etudes of Chopin dispatched in a virtual whirlwind of fury, also by lamplight. No encores, 15 minute standing ovation even though Richter left the building almost immediately after the last chords of the winter wind etude subsided. One of those rare evenings, along with the extraordinary Michelangeli recitals in London that you never forget, and seem like only yesterday. The etudes are somewhere on youtube too.

Thank you for posting this. I was privileged actually to be there, and it was an extraordinary occasion. Sadly he declined to play any encores - that's temperament for you, and perhaps concert-goers are a bit greedy to expect them. He certainly gave one or two at his RFH recital a week or so earlier, and he was apparently unhappy about the lighting at the Barbican.

    • @stefanufer608
      @stefanufer608 4 года назад +7

During the Chopin half of this recital (elsewhere on RUclips) they seemed to shine an overhead light onto the keyboard - this clearly bothered Richter as you can see him periodically looking up at it. Presumably they did it without his permission - audience was lucky he didn’t just storm off!

I was there too, and what a night it was. You will remember that the advertised program was Hindemith and Bartok, and he at the last minute it was changed to the Mozart sonatas and Chopin Etudes. I also saw one of the RFH concerts when he returned to London a year or two later, but this was the one, full of crackling electricity as befitted Richter's black mood of that evening. he gave 2 curtain calls and left immediately afterward for his hotel whereas we clapped, whistled and stamped our feet for a good 20 minutes.
Personally I never cared for pianists who give copious encores like Sokolov and Kissin, smacks too much of the showman, which Richter emphatically was not...

      @@stefanufer608 And also John Merrick
The Barbican recital was televised and television wants lots of light. Richter believed the only light should be his little lamp on the page. Richter got them to allow him this little "conceit" in the first half of the recital (Mozart) but when he started the Chopin they started with the light down and then slowly turned the lighting up as he played, sure that he would not simply walk out. He did not walk out but felt disinclined to play encores. Blame the BBC.

To put dislike on Richter , you must of been accidentally dropped down the floor in your childhood with a help by your negligent mother .

Everytime that I'm listening to the first movement of the Sonata N.8 is as if I were listening to Schubert himself. It's an amazing composition.

It has taken me 45 years to have the imagination ,taste and fingers to even attempt Mozart :it is more difficult than a Chopin etude and yet Chopin requires more gentleness than many pianists seem to realize turning Ballades and Impromptus into Forests of misguided virtuosity and loud passions . Schumann fares better though he is awkard he rarely takes the full body of Chopin and when in Symphonic Etudes or Carnaval one realizes it Chopin is full of surprises his codas are not what so many give us !

What baffles me is that thruout his life a genius like Richter, unlike eg Gulda, never turned to explore UNwritten & improvised music, eg jazz and pop and remained stuck in the boredom of playing the same written classics we heard 1001 times. And alas keep hearing, for no one of those super overbred virtuosos even knows the first thing about jazzing up a tune and creating their own, and even IF they knew, they wouldn't dare to perform in the public eye, too scared to go it alone. Horowitz, although he failed at jazz, gave us various most exciting & stirring transcriptions eg Stars & Stripes Forever & The Carmen Paraphrase, Volodos gave us the superbly doctored Alla Turca,...
My point is: IF Bach, Haydn, Mozart, etc lived today, they, the master improvisers, would undoubtedly be the greatest jazz & pop artists the world has ever known.
RIP Slava, with my undying gratitude for your legendary, unsurpassed recordings of... legendary, unsurpassed sheet music.

You are misinformed. Read Richters biography. By all accounts Richter was not merely a pianist, but an artist, whose knowledge of the repertoire, gift for Improvisation and composition were astounding. For instance Neuhaus, his teacher, raved about his pupiles improvistions. Richter, also enjoyed jazz. He loved Martial Solal

Richter always said, I don't find the key to excute Mozart in the right manner, but I think he feel about it the emotion that music reveal

What made Richter decide to not just study and learn Handel, rareBach keyboard works play.He knew his name sold but to play everythingat the highest level was impressive. Few pianists do this Horoitz and Argerich carry the same hats everywhere. It was a revelation when she tossed out Strauss Burleske and Bartok 3rd concerto .
