It is NOT going to be changed! (sigh!) Personally, I´d be willing to pay extra to be allowed on the balcony.
Gosh, I love GS playing and I love Haydn piano sonatas. But, these are among the weaker of his sonatas. They are just boring IMO. It is the first thumbs down to GS I have given.
Haydn was a very imaginative composer - as GS is a most imaginative pianist! Listen to his handling of the "kinetic" energy in Haydn. Pure joy to listen to!
So, just because you don't like these Haydn sonatas you give Sokolov's excellent performance of these works a "thumbs down"?? Why on earth would you do such a thing?
Unfortunately, your comment is as inaccurate as to fact as it is mistaken in judgement. That said, if the music and/or performance doesn’t speak to you - rather like food or colours you like or dislike - it’s a personal subjective opinion, and that’s fine.
@@elaineblackhurst1509 with all respect, I love Haydn piano sonatas, play several of them, and plan to learn more. My opinion is not about fact or not, nor am I mistaken in judgement. Just my opinion.
Mr Sokolov produces the perfect colour for Haydn, astonishing really. You can really hear that it’s Haydn. Just like people who play Scarlatti produce that brilliant sparkle needed for Scarlatti
I have only heard Mr. Sokolov play in-person once since I am American and he doesn't come to my country. However, I was at the concert that he played these sonatas in Koln as I decided to fly over to hear him. At the first note of Haydn in the great Koln Philharmonie, I realized what everyone was talking about with this artist. Pure magic which transports the listener. Thank you for posting as this sound comes close to heard, sitting in the hall. What a memory I have of this concert.

Mr. Sokolov does a fantastic job of making a fortepiano sound on a modern instrument - which really makes this special, not to mention the haunted way he plays.
I get the sense that Haydn had more ideas in his brain than he ever had time to get out onto paper. His creativity and output seems effortless. I get this just from listening to his music - I don’t actually know anything about his life. I might have to read a biography of his now.
We have lost 7 of his piano sonatas. Probably, 7 great works in the style of the D major XVI:19, both A flat major and c minor sonatas. This lose is a great tragedy.
he led a very interesting life. It's easy to take for granted that he set the terms of the discussion. There could be no Mozart or Beethoven or even Chopin without him.
Most certainly Grigory Sokolov is one of the finest keyboard artists of all time. His incredible sensitivity is expressed in his artistry. In many ways, one of a kind. We are the fortunate ones to hear this performance. Thank you!

I have attended his recitals 5 times. That says how bewitched I am from his playing !
He has such control over color and tone, and hears the music so well, that it sounds like an orchestra.

Thank you for this. I went to Brussels to hear the same programme a few days before this performance, and it was amazing.
I love this place, this is a great video!!
32 is not even for piano, let alone Steinway, it is for harpsichord, about 1775. It is all remarkable stuff though.

Haydn. The guy who essentially created the classical forms we know as sonatas, symphonies and the string quartet.
he led a very interesting life. It's easy to take for granted that he set the terms of the discussion. There could be no Mozart or Beethoven or even Chopin without him.

Great performance. Love it.

excellent
Greetings from Taiwan.
Because he does not like long-distance flights and jet lag (Asia has only been to Japan). So I never heard his live performance.
This is simply grandiose.

Many thanks, especially for link.

Everything under Grigory's command becomes Reference Performance.
I like so many piano players, but I truly love only Lipatti and Sokolov.
I would add Emanuel Ax - for a relaxed philosophical way of responding to Haydn’s sonatas.
Also Pogorelich for something beyond everything.

Sokolov is great as always. Just this music... Haydn sonatas... a bit problematic. Once you know Mozart..
artje123
Once you know Mozart’s sonatas, you appreciate better why Haydn is so different, and why Mozart rated his great friend so highly.
Sorry? Please explain.
@@pepehaydn7039 self explanatory, do some reasearch LAZY ONE.
Haydn is more like early Beethoven. Mozart is definitely as deep but in a different place, a different way.
Haydn has the intensity and a great innovator of the major classical forms.
