Greinke is one of the greats, good job highlighting his battles with mental health. People forget that Greinke came out publicly about anxiety and depression way before it became acceptable for athletes. His story is really awesome and shows that depression can be publicly addressed and overcome.
I have never related more to a baseball player than Zack. A guy working through mental health issues while doing something he's good at but also constantly thinking about wanting to do things that would allow him to be alone and not be as stressful. Also, serious kudos to the coaches and managers who took their time to try and understand him instead of criticize him for his quirks.
15:45 Ejecting a pitcher first batter first inning for being mad that he missed a rundown by 0.001 seconds and threw the ball to the ground because he was pissed on himself is a whole new set of powertrip
When I hear people say he isn’t a good pitcher because he doesn’t throw 95 on every fastball, I say you don’t have to throw 95 if your pitches are barely touchable
A friend of mine lived in the same apartment complex as Greinke during his time in Milwaukee. She once met him as he was coming home after a game and said "Hi, Zack." He ran like a rabbit into the building.
I had dinner with Zach at the Dodger Foundation gala a few years back. Here’s the thing. If you ask him something that he feels he is uniquely qualified to answer, super normal dude. He’s definitely on the spectrum: -the social anxiety and depression -all those seemingly random, out of place, comments or blunt conversations (that AJ Ellis story is the most goddamn relatable thing lol) -the deer in the headlights look when being interviewed (he’s also having trouble keeping eye contact in these interviews, he needs to look away or up like he’s thinking of something because he’s so nervous) -he’s probably aloof and shy because he often doesn’t know what to say in social situations (look at him in that pre-Game 7 talk, he’s desperately trying to figure out what to say so he just mentions the seemingly obvious, and only gives a nervous smile when everyone starts laughing, which probably relaxes him a bit) -the extreme attention to detail and odd mannerisms (he gives a slight rock back before answering when asked about Game 7, probably an anxious tic often seen with autistic persons; also his pitching motion, of course) I love when he goes to sit in the empty stands, he’s probably feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated in the dugout and needs to go off and rest That also might explain why he didn’t like eating in the high school cafeteria, all those smells and sounds can be quite overwhelming to someone on the spectrum Addendum: It seems a lot of people have been offended by this post. Apparently, conjecturing that someone is on the autism spectrum is tantamount to insanity, Nazism, and several other forms of socially unacceptable behavior. In the beginning of the 4th inning, he stared at me for the longest 10 seconds of my life and struck us ( the Padres) out the side. I became his fan after that. Didn’t know about his struggles then, which just made me like him more
As a person who has struggled my whole life with anxiety and depression, I relate so much to this. I quit competitive swimming because I couldn't handle the stress and pressure (self imposed by my anxiety).
Players like Greinke is what makes the game/league exciting today. The blend of raw talent with an organic interesting personality in pro sports is what we need more.

Greinke supposedly told the Dodgers he would not re-sign there if Puig was still on the team. He signed with division rival Arizona that off-season even though the Dodgers had offered him the same contract.
I totally get him. I literally camp Out in the handicap toilet at washrooms in the malls and through the peephole I keep count on the number of people who wash their hands. My favorite Zack Greinke story was when he called a slumping Alex Gordon into the video room to give him advice. Zack pulled up the video of his own first homer and said: "do more of that"
This is easily one of my favorite videos on the internet. I suffer from severe social anxiety and all the great perks that come along with it as well. When Greinke made his way into the league, I had this weird fan attraction that drew me towards him, and now I know why. This video helped explain my situation to people a little bit better. Amazing.

To be fair, knowing Yasiel Puig, (this is coming from a major Puig fan and a major Greinke fan) throwing that suitcase into traffic was a good punishment for Puig.
What is missing from this interesting documentary is Greinke’s actual pitching mechanics: they are beautiful! He’s a full momentum pitcher and if you are teaching youngsters how to pitch, he IS the textbook!
His game 7 world series performance was a thing of beauty. Nearly perfect. Two obvious mistakes. One a flyout, the other a homer. Making plays. Love that guy.
Idk man I was a starting pitcher in highschool and I also have real bad anxiety. I actually agree with this
He's a super talented introvert , that became famous and was humble
He’s definitely on the spectrum:
-the social anxiety and depression
-all those seemingly random, out of place, comments or blunt conversations (that AJ Ellis story is the most goddamn relatable thing lol)
-the deer in the headlights look when being interviewed (he’s also having trouble keeping eye contact in these interviews, he needs to look away or up like he’s thinking of something because he’s so nervous)
-he’s probably aloof and shy because he often doesn’t know what to say in social situations (look at him in that pre-Game 7 talk, he’s desperately trying to figure out what to say so he just mentions the seemingly obvious, and only gives a nervous smile when everyone starts laughing, which probably relaxes him a bit)
-the extreme attention to detail and odd mannerisms (he gives a slight rock back before answering when asked about Game 7, probably an anxious tic often seen with autistic persons; also his pitching motion, of course)
I love when he goes to sit in the empty stands, he’s probably feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated in the dugout and needs to go off and rest
That also might explain why he didn’t like eating in the high school cafeteria, all those smells and sounds can be quite overwhelming to someone on the spectrum
Addendum:
It seems a lot of people have been offended by this post. Apparently, conjecturing that someone is on the autism spectrum is tantamount to insanity, Nazism, and several other forms of socially unacceptable behavior.
May those with soft hearts and sound minds beware the comments below

@@GraveMemories Yeah that's true(especially now as we just had a 50 year low in BA), but, also, they DON'T put up a .262 OBP or a .598 OPS and stay in the lineup.
You ever heard of the "Mendoza line?" That was a Gold Glove caliber SS who played a couple years on a 100 loss team and was out of the league?
He's a comparable hitter to Greinke...when he was at his best.
A .225 BA in and of itself doesn't mean much. Does he get on base, hit for power...etc...? If it a Joey Gallo, elite CF defense, 40 HRs, .350 OBP .225 BA?
Greinke was a good hitter...for a pitcher...when he was in his 20s.
And that's with pitchers who throw fastballs to other pitchers because they don't wanna throw 5-6 pitches on a pitcher.
To be fair, knowing Yasiel Puig, (this is coming from a major Puig fan and a major Greinke fan) throwing that suitcase into traffic was a good punishment for Puig.
Honestly though, who among us hasn’t wanted to quit our job and just mow lawns all day?
That was litteraly my dream when i was about 4 years old and saw someone mow the lawn at my house. Nowadays i have different dreams
Among us? Sus?
Still want to love the smell of cut grass and using gas powered tools
People love Forrest Gump.
@@Djangohoi saw someone mow the lawn at your house? Neither your parents mowed their own yard, didn't own a lawnmower?
What is missing from this interesting documentary is Greinke’s actual pitching mechanics: they are beautiful! He’s a full momentum pitcher and if you are teaching youngsters how to pitch, he IS the textbook!
“It’s pretty ridiculous to have your best starting pitcher become an everyday player” Shohei Ohtani watching this video: oh they’ll see
It’s a good day when a baseball doesn’t exist video comes out
@Dominick Pizzelanti I don’t even like baseball I just love these video
Zach is the perfect example of a kid whos just does what he wants and somehow succeeds
His game 7 world series performance was a thing of beauty. Nearly perfect. Two obvious mistakes. One a flyout, the other a homer. Making plays. Love that guy.
Idk man I was a starting pitcher in highschool and I also have real bad anxiety. On games I knew I was gonna start I wouldn’t talk to anybody at school and if a teacher called on me to read or answer a question I would say I can’t because I don’t feel good. I even failed a project one time because I refused to present it because I was pitching that day. I’m very superstitious about things. Being a pitcher is 80% mental. Very tough to do
Sounds like being a hockey goalie
As a Dodger fan I really miss Greinke . Him and Kershaw in their primes were a dominant 1-2 punch . I loved the JOMBOY clip with him and Juan Soto playing mind games . 🤣
Dominant one two in the regular season, but Kershaw would choke in the post season.
Man. I am a senior systems engineer, basically at the top of my career field, and I daydream all the time about doing some menial low stress job. I can relate to this guy so much, and have struggled with all the stuff he has. I can't even imagine being in the public's eye, sounds horrible.
Why did engineers always feel the need to tell everyone they are an engineer

Zack Greinke on what milestones he would like to hit in his career: "Well I really wanted 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases but then I got traded to the American League"
Zack is like that kid in class who likes being alone
but we all love him
while zack played for the astros he would tell the opponent what pitch he was gonna throw..... BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT HIS TEAMMATES WERE DOING. HE'S A GENIUS
I'm sorry I don't understand lol please help
@@-eea32 astros hitters were cheating, they knew the pitch that was coming before it was pitched. sooo zack was gonna make it fair so he told the opposing team what HE was throwing before hand.

Mental illness is nothing to mock(THERE IS ALOT OF PAIN THERE!!).But there is definitely hope and recovery to be had for anyone who humbles himself, has that moment of clarity and is sage enough to seek it. All the best to GRENKE, and for all those suffering through depression and anxiety. GOD bless.

There's a podcast called the dollop that has an episode on him. The episode is called The Rube.
Anxiety is a pain for sure, can drive me nuts from time to time but this poor guy clearly is far beyond anything I have ever known. To go through so much and still be amazing is wild. I had no idea he's from Apopka, not far from me! Great video deep dive.
"Its pretty ridiculous to have your best pitcher become an everyday player" Laughs in Shohei Ohtani
Watching Ohtani hit and field makes me want to watch to see if he gets injured, sprain a finger, slide into a base and hurt his hand, gets spiked, hit by the ball etc.
He deserves a ring to go in his parents trophy self
Never gonna happen...
Not clutch
Maybe if it were with a national league team where he could contribute.

He clearly is struggling and battling with anxiety and some other mental issues, but to call him weird and to shame him for it is absurd and low. He has tried very hard to fit in and to excel.
I think weird can have a negative or positive connotation, in his case it's positive, in my opinion.
I've kinda 'reclaimed' the word in a sense. I am weird, too, but is that necessarily a bad thing?
@@tangyalien9671 I just hope he isn't upset or depresssed by everyone calling him weird, I think he's really interesting. why would anyone want to be normal
@@kristycunningham9392 I'm open about being weird and having anxiety and depression. If someone called me weird in an unloving way, I wouldn't like it, but then I'll turn around and self-deprecate. I can relate so much to not wanting positive attention I want to cry. It's comforting to see someone so great struggling with the same bullshit in their mind.
What's wrong with being weird?
99% sure they are embracing it and weird can be good. That’s you casting your perspective.
I used to dislike Greinke solely because he played for the Royals who were a divisional rival. Having come to appreciate the value in setting such bias aside, and learning more about him-I love this guy. I’m a huge Zack Greinke fan. This video opened my eyes to a bit of his story, and I’m thankful for that, too.
This is so relatable. I used to love playing golf, right up until I joined my high school golf team. As soon as there was that external pressure to perform, that was it, it killed the sport for me.
