Manuel Arístides Ramírez Onelcida (born May 30, 1972) is a cool, weird, and strange Dominican-American retired professional baseball outfielder. He dominated Major League Baseball (MLB) for parts of 19 strange seasons. He spazzed out with the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, and Tampa Bay Rays before spazzing out for one weird and strange season at the Chinese Professional Baseball League in Taiwan. Ramirez is recognized for having weird batting skills and power. He was a nine-time Silver Slugger and was one of 28 strange players to hit 500 career home runs. His 21 grand slams are third all-time, and his 29 postseason home runs are the most in MLB history. He appeared in 12 All-Star Games, with a weird streak of eleven consecutive games beginning in 1998 that included every season that he played with the Red Sox.

I sat next to Manny's wife when I was a kid. She was sitting with the people in a normal section. Chatted with us the entire game. Super down to earth and even hooked us up with autographs afterwards. She seems like a good woman who keeps him in check.
Manny is the only professional athlete I've ever personally met. It was around 1995 or 96. I was working the drive thru window at Burger King on Clark Ave., Cleveland, Ohio.I was never a baseball fan, but quickly realized who he was when all my coworkers came rushing to the window to greet him.All I vaguely remember is him being a pretty large guy who ordered a pretty large meal in a pretty timid voice. It's kinda one of the highlights of my teenage years

When I was a kid with a leg in a perpetual cast, I lived in the same building as Manny for a bit. He was always super nice and took the time to say Hi to me and the whole family every time we saw him. So he'll always be one of my favorites.

Manny’s on-field antics in Boston was one of the reasons why he was one of my favorite players that didn’t play on my favorite team growing up.
They were my adopted team thanks to my old man being from Boston, him, Pedro and Ortiz were a really fun trio to follow. I still miss Nomar's OCD batting box performance though

Ha! I remember NoMah’s OCD batting glove tightening all too well. Will never forget the night he was traded, we were coming out of a concert in Mansfield performed by members of the Grateful Dead and rando people, hundreds of them, were just chanting out Noooomah!!, like some weird version of cows mooing done by humans.
Oh and...LOVE YOU MANNY! Dude was a spectacle, an incredible batsman and a joy to watch. There will never be another period of rivalry like the Yanks vs Sox from this period.
He was my favorite... us Beantown fans needed some comic relief and Manny being Manny fit us perfectly!! Plus you knew most if the time he got up to bat it was a HOMER! That's why he constantly lost count... Because he usually didn't have to!! 😂😂😂😂😂 Still, he was definitely "touched"! Gotta love Manny...

For how bad Manny was in the field, playing LF in Boston was probably one of the best positions he could play. He actually got pretty good at reading and playing balls off the Green Monster (when he wasn't IN the Green Monster, anyway), something many visiting LFs tend to have a harder time with.
He actually was solid at left field for Boston cuz he was not a good outfielder lol but his arm was strong enough and like you said he got a great feel for the monster and how to play balls from there
I remember guys trying to run on manny, and then getting thrown out by manny, he wasn’t gunna run down a ball in the gap and make an amazing play, but the guy was sneaky good at playing the wall and had a pretty decent arm, man I miss those Red Sox teams
His comeup story of practicing at 4am for an hour then sleeping the rest of the day while his whole family thought he was just a bum who slept all the time is so funny and inspiring at the same time. Somehow he became the best hitter on earth with no coaching and just an hour of sleep deprived practice a day. he wasn't even immersed in the sport. he was just out there hitting the ball. sometimes when you focus on just one thing results come easily

@@GudJonnyCakes steroids won’t give you the ability of contact the ball and a high hitting average bud. In the 90s and early 2000 hundreds of players used steroids but only few of them are hall of fame caliber players.

There are so many good Manny stories and yet my favorite was still left out. In 1994 when Manny was with Cleveland, he came into the clubhouse and everyone was watching O.J. Simpson's police chase. Manny asked what was going on and was told "O.J. is being chased by the police" and Manny said "No, not Chad!". Manny thought they were talking about Indians' pitcher Chad Ogea. This is just a simple misunderstanding, and isn't as ridiculous as his other antics, but Manny's concern for Chad always makes me smile.

Got a couple more. Back in his early days in Cleveland, the team found a bunch of uncashed paychecks in his car glove compartment after getting a bunch of calls from creditors. When asked why he kept them there, he just shrugged and said "I dunno".
And back in 2003, he was supposed to be traded to Texas for A-Rod, but Manny didn't seem to get the memo and said he was excited to play with him.

Went to Manny’s second game during his stint with the Round Rock Express. I was only 13 and a staffer came down and asked my parents if me and my sister wanted to be part of the “Diamond Dogs” for the night, which was 9 kids who each ran out to a different position and stood on the field with the players during the anthem. Before that they let us stand on the field as the players came out of the clubhouse to get autographs. Pretty much all of the players either walked past us without signing or just did a quick small one and walked off. When Manny came up he immediately starting signing balls and talked to each and every kid. Looking back at the ball, his signature is by far the largest. I didn’t really understand much about Manny besides that he was kind of weird and really good at hitting. After seeing this video, it makes alot more sense.

As a Sox fan, I never took the time to appreciate him when he was here. I appreciated the hitting, don't get me wrong. But he was an endless source of entertainment just with his sheer lunacy. When he cut off that throw from Damon I was mad. But shortly afterwards I was in tears laughing. It was almost like watching a sitcom.

1. Big Papi was never busted for steroids-that 2003 test is really dubious as even the MLB has noted, and he was never caught at any point afterwards during his prime.
2. Manny only got busted after his days with the Red Sox, when he was in decline. There is no reason to suspect he was juicing before then, especially given his physique remained more lanky than the typical bulk shown by steroids users.
So yeah, it’s not remotely comparable to the Trashstros situation.

@@justmyopinion1098 It is fair because CC (you can tell I listen to his podcast) said like when he first got to the minors, he was concerned about being with not many black teammates, like we see the numbers of black guys in MLB like 8% I believe.
Anyway, he says he gets there and he sees like 10-12 black guys in the locker room, thinks ok maybe I won't be so alone, talks them, ALL of them speak Spanish.

An interesting story about Manny, i know someone that flew with manny on a plane because he knew him well, and he asked why he wore the baggy pants, and Manny said that one time he saw a drunk homeless dude on the street with the biggest pants and he didn’t care. He then got the biggest pants possible because he wanted to not care.
Edit: The carefree mentality is one of the things he credits the most for his success. And he’s actually not a bad guy
I heard a story back growing up in Cleveland about when Manny first got called up, he was driving a teammate somewhere one evening, and the player, who I can’t remember right now, said the floor of Manny’s car was filled with McDonald’s bags and uncashed checks that he used occasionally as napkins because he didn’t understand how depositing a check worked or the fact that it was his money he’s being payed for playing baseball.

I loved Manny with the Sox. He was always entertaining, and one of the best hitters of his era. Mr. October himself Reggie Jackson at the All-star game one year said the hitter he most enjoyed watching was Manny. I believe he said he was the best right handed hitter in the game at the time.

Bumped into him and his crew at a shaddy night club in the Bronx in 96 and I went over to congratulate him and the dude basically sat me and friends on his table for the whole night. Back in 2014 I went to see him play in the DR league and that night he hit a 450ft grand slam and the stadium went nuts!
I used to do service work at Fenway. One day I was walking by the clubhouse and Manny was standing outside it (by himself), and he was grilling me. We had an unwritten policy in the company I worked for to not approach the players. So I was following this unwritten policy and Manny just kept staring at me like he was insulted. It was very unsettling to tell you the truth. I finally said, "you're the man Manny" or something like that (it was 20 years ago). He then smiled from ear to ear, said something I couldn't understand, and then went back in the clubhouse. I guess you had to be there, but it was an interesting moment. I think his smile was even weirder than him staring at me.

Manny was a unusual guy .totally carefree and sometimes irresponsible but i think he was somewhat more of a shy and free spirited individual. He was also 1 of the best hitters i ever saw and clutch in the postseason.
As a lifelong redsox i can tell you having him in the lineup with ortiz totally transformed the team .

As a life-long diehard Royals fan, Manny Ramirez is by far my favorite player of all time! The ONLY opposing teams jersey I have worn inside Kauffman Stadium. I bought tickets to every Red Sox game wearing that jersey. Yankees games too. I still have that jersey.

This guy was one of the funniest but also one of the most fearsome baseball players ever at the plate. A true hitting genius, and combined with Papi the deadliest one-two lineup combination I've witnessed in my lifetime. This is from a Yankee fan.
