Hi Kristy, really great lesson to encourage those that don't have a lot of money to buy larger set of colored pencils, I was impressed and inspired to see what 5 Colors could do with the right techniques, blending, shading, and layering/blending - Wow!
Not only are you a brilliant and skilled artist but you’re a very gifted instructor! I totally need to do this challenge because i can see the immense value ( no pun intended) of this exercise on my skills in color manipulation. Watching your fantastic demonstration of this challenge was inspiring!
Art classes and teachers are extremely helpful for expanding one's ability to use colors and shading in different ways. My teacher would challenge us to draw white things with dark shadows cast on them but without any black, grey or dark paints. We had to use our colors to come up with different tones and shading.
Oh my, thank you for download. Your such a wonderful colorist! I've used many of your videos to help me along my coloring journey. Again thanks so much! 💚
Hey Kirsty, I only use minimal colors ( cheap Navneet pencils ) and I can see how this works, we just have to layer lots of colors on top to get the color that we want.. I only have one issue.. sometimes when I blend the colors together with white it doesn't look smooth enough, is it because of layering or the cheap pencils??🙄
It might be the pencils. I have found that the white pencil is the only one that doesn’t seem to work well if you use a cheap version. You can buy more expensive coloured pencil brands individually. So even if you have a cheap set of pencils it might be worth getting a more expensive white pencil like prismacolor or caran d’ache luminance 😊

oh now THIS is something i can get onboard with! i don't draw or paint often, not like i used to as a teen (i'm 27 now), every once in a while i get in a slump and need to draw or paint to wind down. and this idea stuck with me, now i want to challenge myself with paint instead. i used to sketch realism, people to be more specific, but i drove through the mountains last year with my mum to go visit my brother in british columbia (we live in saskatchewan, canada), and the stunning photos i can reference from. wow. we went at the beginning of october so it was gorgeous, lots of leaves were different colours, changing for autumn. i can definitely only use the primary colours for just that alone. thanks for the challenge! p.s: it's odd that this was in my recommended when i am in the middle of a slump. it's like fate hahaha. i don't ever get art channel recommendations.
I understand how much work goes into artwork like this so, thank you Kirsty. I've tried using split primary colored pencils and I like it, a lot. I do a lot of watercolor so I pretty much carry that palette over to all media. I'm going to go checkout the guide you made. Thanks for all your hard work.

Thank you! Here is a tip: Look into any videos which tell you that yellow, cyan, and magenta are the primary colors. That way, you will see exactly which shade of "red" and "blue" mixes well for a bright orange, green or purple. Your blue is close to cyan, your red too far from magenta to mix really well.
Wow that looks amazing! Most people don't realize that you only really need your primaries for any colour mixing. I only paint acrylic with primaries and white. Gold can be a warm tone or a cool tone it depends what colour you use as your base.
This is so amazing! I'm just starting out with pencils, and when I found your channel I was so happy. Is there any way you could do a video about the burnishing blending technique for an entire piece? Most of the blending videos I find are using solvent, and I really want to learn to do it just with the pencils.
Beautiful work!! So often I see colored pencil artists layer many many different colors thinking it creates more depth and realism. I even have a book on colored pencil painting where the artist layers so many colors and after all the art I have seen, the less colors layered in the better!! You made it so much more simple and the finished product is perfect! Very realistic!! Thanks!!
It is beyond amazing! What a beauty you can express on a sheet of paper! Thank you for opening my eyes! The depth you created is perhaps much better than thinner layers of exact colours.
She had a really good reason for not using printing paper in one of her episodes. It had something to do with the slickness of the paper. There's a technique she uses with an xacto knife that you would have a hard time doing on printer paper.
Yes, you can layer colors to mix them on printing paper too. But not in the same way, as printing paper has its limitations. And they won't come out the same, as she is using toned paper. Absolutely fabulous a joy to watch x
I couldn’t do this with all 5 Infiniti stones
theres 6. red: reality, orange: soul, yellow: mind, green: time, blue: space, & purple: power.
I just love all of your videos! You draw and paint SO realistically! I especially admire your watercolour paintings, because I have tried watercolour many times but they're just so difficult to handle! Maybe you do a video on a real time follow along watercolour tutorial? Thanks.☺️

I can’t do realism at all but I’m trying
same good luck
Keep trying and you will succeed
This video is just what I needed to see and hear. I’ve been trying to decide if to sacrifice quality for a bigger set of prismacolors or if I can manage with a smaller set of polychromos and now I have my answer.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! (For the downloadable information) I remember taking art class, and ALL THIS info. But, never had it written down...! 😩 My hubby and I are both art people. He NEVER remembered ANY of this! So, this will be PERFECT to print out and have around for a reference!! Again, THANK YOU FOR THIS!! 🙏🏻👍🏻💋💖👏🏻🙌🏻🔥
Wow! I wouldn't have believed that was possible if I hadn't just watched you do it - you're an inspiration, thanks for sharing your expertise and for the free downloads.
