I married my best friend. But years of mistakes chipped away at our love. 8 years in he made a huge mistake and realized he needed help. I spent two years angry. He kept his head down, did the work, and waited for me to heal. One day I realized I was now the problem. Today, we are better than where we started. A marriage is so hard. We’re celebrating 11 years next month.

Retired therapist and high conflict family mediator here - Bethenny - you have nailed this! Every single bullet point is spot on. This is exactly what I would try to explain to my clients and/or people just asking for quick advice. ANYONE going through a separation/divorce please listen to this advise. If you have children they will thank you in the end. Engaging in a pissing match with your ex/soon-to-be ex and dragging your kids through it - IS CHILD ABUSE - stop it. Put your big girl/boy panties on, keep the hatred of the other out of it, document everything, stick to the facts, and act in the best interest of the child/children (if there are REAL time risks to the child by one of the parents - in this case - bring in a SKILLED professional to assess and document such) otherwise realize you will not get everything you want and seek to achieve a balanced and fair result for both parties, and most importantly, the child/children - it’s called give and take. Bethenny is right - those folks working in this area (Judges, Lawyers, most skilled Mediators, Therapists, Assessors, etc) have heard it/seen it all. Your ‘stories’ are not unique - we’ve heard some version of it repeatedly so stick to the facts and have it DOCUMENTED.
Anyway, I’m simply reiterating what Bethenny has already said. Please just listen to this and take heed. I can VERIFY she is 100% accurate and she is not off in left field and being bitter because of her particularly acrimonious and protracted circumstance.
Well done Bethenny! Thank you for putting this together for folks.
Also sending you a big hug regarding the situation with the passing of your Mom - I hope your heart is healing from all that you’ve gone through in that regard 🙏🏻

I agreed. Thank you, B. I went to a similar situation, 7 years in and out of court. Every single piece of advise here is pure gold. I was able to move my case when I decided to represent myself. Not everyone can do it but when things get hard if you don't know the law, you add another problem.

What does one do when you carefully document the facts, and they are side stepped by blatant lies, and exparte and “emergency “ orders take place where blatant disgusting lies are leveraged against you , and then you will be drug o through the ringer , the abuser NEVER need prove their point, or even make it to an actual hearing- they win just by way of being listened to or given a temporary order-
In a case where an abuser is also financially able to hire someone who is without morals and willing to lie and cheat for them and for their money, that on top of our system , it’s seemingly impossible - you have good parents who have been years without seeing their child, when their abuser has full custody and continues to abuse you and them, and YES it can and does happen-
How can you get a court to deal with them, without harming you in their revenge and they have your child for ransom- not for love, they know no such thing, they only know “he who harms wins” that’s it - and revenge

I am in the process of divorce right now.. I’m on my SECOND lawyer.. I’ve had to borrow money from all my family and friends.. my husband was emotionally, mentally, verbally and financially abusive. He cut me off from the finances and left me with nothing. I sold my house and relocated to be in this relationship and now I have nothing. I am living in a temporary apartment belonging to a friend of a friend, but I’m not sure how long I will be able to stay here. I believe I am suffering from some post traumatic stress.. I have withered down to 104 pounds and I’m 5’6”.. I had to pawn my $10,000 wedding ring just to pay my bills.. I can’t even tell you the nightmare I’ve been through.. I became my own private investigator when I was going through my divorce. My ex and I were fighting over custody of our son and it wasn't that he really wanted all this time with him he just didn't want to pay me child support. So I found out he was always leaving our son with his mom when it was his parenting time so I started collecting evidence by following him. I always had a tape recorder on when we had parenting exchange and thank god because I got him telling me he would see me in hell before he paid me child support. Needless to say the custody did not go his way. My top points that Bethenny mentioned are 1) being organized 2) play by the rules (don't color outside the lines) and most importantly 3) parent alienation. Do NOT speak poorly about the other parent no matter how much you despise them, the child will eventually figure it out on their own. Bethenny I hope you finish telling your story of divorce, I think it could really help others going through a similar situation. ❤

Childhood trauma is so debilitating because when a child is confronted with alcohol /drug/physical/sexual or mental abuse in their parents or caregivers , they develop a keen sense of what BAD people act like, an we avoid that, at all cost. We think we know what dangerous acts an looks like. He doesnt!! Mr. NARCISSIS. He is confident more so than anyone youve ever met, an charm itself. He usually had an idealic childhood, and any teacher/friend/or parent that didnt recognise his significance was removed. You will not see this guy coming but he sees you. I guarantee you the money he spends to hide things, etc. has cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars. I always felt like unless I told him the whole story of people they wouldn’t get it just because it was so bad… It took a while to understand all of what B is saying. but it’s so true. Bethenny…I’ve been wanting to reach out to you for YEARS and am so glad you’re doing this podcast. When my ex came into a LOT of money he started manipulating and abusing me. He would have me sign trust documents that his secretary would notarized and I had no idea what I was signing. I didn’t even know I could have an independent lawyer review it. I TRUSTED him!
He started emotionally and physically abusing me to the point I was in tears everyday! He wanted me to file so I’d look like the hysterical spouse. In addition he put every one of our assets into a trust under the name of our 2 boys with him as SOLE trustee, thinking I would never sue my boys. Unfortunately that was what I had to do. Each boy, 15 & 18 at the time needed legal representation because their MOTHER was suing them. My boys and I are still traumatized and one even refuses to talk to me now.
The divorce was the most excruciating event I have EVER gone thru and I’ve even survived breast cancer. Unfortunately, right now, I’ve lost trust in humanity when it comes to dating. I wish you well in life gurl and keep up the podcasts. I wish I had seen this while going thru my ugly time. You’re the best!!

Bethenny Frankel was telling HER story that included RAW feelings and REAL emotions. You were an open book which many celebrities are NOT so you doing that series almost made you....HUMAN. And even though I completely agree that this new series of Divorce 101 is of utmost importance and such a needed topic to teach on, I think a lot of people were waiting for the continuation of YOUR divorce story.

Indeed ! You can preach all this advice til the cows come home , but sadly , most ppl still think divorce will NEVER , EVER happen to them . Until it does . And then it becomes a whole different perspective /understanding of the lengths partners will go to in order to control & destroy each other . ‘ You can’t put an old head on young shoulders ‘ …..we are doomed to repeat, repeat , repeat the mistakes of our parents
I think we all really just want to know ab her ex & the despicable lengths he went to in order to control & publicly humiliate B . Esp now that we r understanding more ab coercive abuse & the vile game playing & control methods used by narcs . But I guess she will have to navigate those recollections pretty cautiously for fear of him re litigating her all over again & doing what he does best . Bit of a slippery slope given he’s shown his tenacity for control

I was a major fan of Doris Day, her music, her films, as a child.
As an adult, I’ve continue to love and respect her for her animal advocacy. In her honor, I extended my clinical skills to include counseling people who’ve lost their furry family members, or as she’d say, “four-leggers🐾🐾
Doris Day started a grassroots movement before animal advocacy was trendy.
What was remarkable about her is how she used her stardom, her “celebrity”! She told Hitchcock she couldn’t work seeing the animals in Marrakesh starving.
    The animals got fed…..
YOU, Bethenny Frankel, hustled to bring your brilliant idea to fruition. You are doing the same thing as Doris…..using your celebrity to bring awareness to important issues.
You have become a humanitarian, helping in disaster areas, and providing vital information about important social issues.

You say what I ALWAYS say to clients and that is you can start off with the best intentions but this can turn in a war zone very quickly. High conflict people will always pull the kids into the drama, one way or another. I am so glad you are giving people the reality. I am directly all of my clients to your Divorce Podcast. Bethenny! I have followed you since the beginning of NY Housewives, your wedding, Brynn, Skinny Girl and now. This topic is so needed and I applaud you for sharing. I went through a late '90s Dallas style divorce and it was as nasty as they come. I wish I'd known what I know now but we all, my kids, my ex and myself have gotten to other side, peace. We may always be healing from it but are now doing things differently with our grown children, actually spending time as a family. Im grateful my kids are incredible young adults very forgiving and accepting individuals. It's truly a choice to forgive, learn, heal and grow from our bad divorces but everyone handles things differently and at different rates. I sure do applaud you for sharing and opening the discussion on your platform and hope it helps millions! Bless you Bethenny ❤🙏🏼

You are so spot on Bethenny. My divorce lasted 6 months but only because I wanted to stop the bleeding and I gave in to ridiculous demands. I wish I would have fought for full custody. My daughter, now 20, was completely damaged by his toxic behavior - 2 years before the divorce, during the divorce, and every step of the way after the divorce. Emotionally abusive, narcissistic man whose only objective was to try to get her away from me. When she waw about 15 she told him she did not want to abide by his "half time" rights and she stayed with me and my current husband. She is amazingly doing okay now, but she is damaged forever thanks to him.

Of course, divorce is worse. A spouse who left the family for some stranger, then a financial fallout occurs. The kids down the road don't want steps, or halves in reality. And most don't want exes in the picture nor to have to share holidays. Divorce with kids is a nightmare in most cases, And NO blended families do NOT work. It was coined to disguise dysfunctional as normal...or new normal.

Bethenny has gone way beyond already- she has been more transparent about her life than your IG favorites- We know that her advice is informed and her experiences can level us all up.

As someone who lives in the only country (apart from the Vatican) where divorce is illegal, I find this not only informative but also enlightening. I am in a committed 10 year relationship with someone and I have no plans of getting married. I have seen friends and acquaintances go through the painful and expensive process that of annulment. Divorce is certainly hell for most people. Annulment is a special kind of torture in and of itself. In my less than humble opinion, there are ways to have a family and be in a loving relationship without getting into a legal union. I stay because I want to, not because I am deathly afraid of what happens when I try to break free of the relationship and all the legal ramifications that come with the dissolution of a marriage. Thanks for sharing, B.

I believe in marriage but I wasn't going to have kids so I didn't see the point in it. My husband is old fashioned and religious so he wanted to marry. We've been together for 20 years now and still doing well but honestly, I was not taught about the ins and outs of a marriage. I wasn't told how insanely fragile marriage can be. People don't realize how betrayal doesn't have to be about infedelity or lying, it could simply be not supporting your partner. We have learned so much together but marriage is not always easy. It's something to take very seriously and I hate when people pressure others into it. If you don't want marriage, don't do it. You have to make the best choices for you.

From watching her original divorce series (that r now gone) and her mom passing vlog I learned more about the real bethenny than anything u have ever done. It was like that last missing puzzle piece to tie it all together. From other interviews about u other peoples version of u, like what made ur clock tick. I wonder u recording about ur mom so fast if u have watched back and listened to some the chilling statements u have mirrored? So much clicked with the divorce segments and ur moms video. I was truely expecting a long pause and that u found the therapist u have searched for to dig into ur healing from a lot in ur life. It feels like the walls r back up hyper-focused bethenny is present and this will txtbook style now. I sincerly have admired u and will always enjoy ur endeavors. The small glimpse has passed and I pray u heal for brynns sake and her future as she becomes a woman and finde her place and experiences her way thru love on a new path. The 10yr divorce and present day still nocontact coparenting has imprinted on her. Her childhood never had a tone of family or snapshots of mom and dad and me. Parents never think the child is aware until u find out they r and its too late.

I’m in the uk and being harrasssed by my sister in law via social media. This side show advice I take on and has cemented things for me. She has had a campaign of harassment against me on social media for 6 months every day. And accuses me of awful things, thankfully I have a savy husband who knows his sister can’t keep her mouth shut and has kept a one drive of every thing she’s said. Now the police have it. She’s looking at charges for harassment , stalking and threats to harm my children. Part of that was publicly telling the world my child was autistic when we hadn’t told certain family members yet not because we were ashamed because he was still going through the diagnosis process. Iv had mums at school say they’ve seen her videos iv made responses with all my evidence in my drafts ready to press send so I can win the public battle. My assigned police officer said don’t respond to anything but like you said it’s a marathon not a sprint and soon she’ll be convicted and not allowed to contact us for 10 years. It’s really hard to stay quiet While horrendous allegations are made about you

While there is definitely some helpful information here that is universal, but most of us mere mortals watching this video simply cannot relate to battling over $ettlements involving hundreds of millions of dollars in business, personal, and real estate assets in the public eye, let alone in front of television cameras which obviously adds a whole other level of problems.

I am 42 and have never been married. No children. I have a middle class job. Nothing fancy. I have felt embarrassed and like I have missed the expected milestone because I did not find a man and "get the ring." In the beginning of the episode when you said that women are often in such a rush that they don't have a realistic expectation for how the relationship will be after the four dresses and the Bora Bora trip, I felt hopeful. Like, maybe my life isn't terrible and shameful because I haven't yet said "I do." I do aspire to get married and feel left behind that It hasn't happened. I would love to hear honest conversations on what marriage and longterm relationships are truly like. No one talks about in a meaningful way. Every married couple I see are walking around Whole Foods picking out kale in bliss. Is everyone pretending? Are the metaphorical Louis Vuitton bags I see women carrying their relationships in just purchased on Canal Street?

You know who should be embarrassed people that abandoned their children, who cheated, who gaslighted and judged.
Not everybody is going to get married and have children. And it is ok. It is normal. And you can have a very good life not having all that.
Life is life. And is unpredictable. And it is nice lo live and breath air and buy kale by yourself is nice too.

It's the things you don't see behind closed doors. That's why some couples who are seemingly happy end up divorced. It can be small things that build up over time. It's something very difficult to describe. Marriage is like having children, you have to experience it in order to full grasp the concept of how incredibly fragile it is. Am I making sense?
The grass is always greener isn't it? We always want what we haven't experienced but I tell you, although marriage can be wonderful if you're married to the right person, you will hit some of the lowest lows in your life. And many feel lonely in their marriages and it's one of the worst feelings in the world. Feeling lonely when you're single is a lot less painful.
You don't need marriage to feel fulfilled and happy. A bad marriage can rob you of all that. Marriage isn't going to suddenly solve any problems you have or offer you some otherworldly type of happiness. Your life sounds pretty good as is tbh. Don't ever feel ashamed of your life. You're not doing anything wrong. Live it to the fullest regardless of your relationship status. It's too short to worry over the 'what ifs'.

All my married friend seem happy in public but I see what goes on behind the scenes with MIL, really different ideas on how to raise kids and had to leave because of screaming arguments. So I wouldn't worry about not fitting the "mould" I didn't either. I'm 45 I have a 27 year old son I worked my way upto head chef in some pretty good restaurants then re-trained as a social worker and now I work in child protection and my child manages an Art Gallery in Paris. You dont need a ring and a piece of paper to have a full life. Best of luck to you in the future love from Scotland ❤

I am sure when you meet your husband, you will find first and foremost a person you can feel emotionally and physically safe with. And someone who loves and cherishes you. Also the world needs more kind people. Treat your person with kindness and know they'll definitely disappoint you because they're human. All the best. Love is kind. Love is patient. When I did… I looked at my attorney and said “All the Judge wants us to do is close the financial books equitably and take care of the assets until they turn eighteen. He doesn't care about anything else.” He said Yes, you're finally getting it.” I looked at him and said let’s close the books. When I got to THAT MINDSET…. The Judge awarded me 89% of what I felt was equitable.

Her fans who have been around such her first season of RHONY and followed everything she’s done, are invested and felt like she was finally going to tell her side of things. Hopefully she can mix at least a little of that in, with the overall advice. Love you B!!

I had the most horrific marriage and divorce. Minus the money that you spent I was in unmitigated hell. I keep thinking that one day, he will get paid back from all of the horrific things he did to me and his daughter. It was hell on earth.

What's amazing is I heard some points B made that can help in other aspects of your life legally that have NOTHING to do with divorce.!!
Lots of tips here folks - not just for divorce!! Please watch and listen. Bethenny gives very wise advice!

Thank you, Bethany, for being brave enough to be so open and transparent about what you have gone through in your divorce, along with the loss of your mother. I'm just amazed that you are doing this, and I am certainly appreciative to you for sharing all of this. Do it the way that's best for YOU, and I will be watching and listening and supporting all the way ❤️!

Great series, really great advice. I believe in marriage, but i also 'know' it is a legal contract!!. I've had two long-term relationships, 7 and 13 years, respectively. The last one almost killed me, literally left with my clothes and some of my late moms cookware, even though we both owned the house, car, etc. That was seven years ago, the relationship completely changed my brain chemistry! I haven't been in a relationship since, the mental toll aged me internally by 30 years. Horrid. I wish everyone only the best ❤.

Financial abuse with grey divorce is absolutely debilitating. It almost broke me. Financially, it did. I was ordered to sell my house. I had lived there for twenty six years. 💔 I lost my medical insurance. PA is supposedly an “equitable “ divorce state. 😂 Don’t trust and don’t believe. In some places it’s still a man’s world. Sad but true.
Thank you Bethenny, I pray women who were most of the time stay at home mothers are treated with more respect and dignity soon. We’re told that the work we did at home counts and that it will be considered and taken into account. 🙄I don’t know what the answer is for this group of women. I spent $30,000.00 in legal fees over four years. I never made that much money in my life. I used cc’s and luckily I was able to get a personal loan. Honestly, luck was on my side that day. My DTI ratio was good so I was approved. 😮
Still, his lawyer was better. 🥺
I am very sorry about your mother. Thank you for staying strong for women. 💪

B became the 'monied spouse' after she married Jason. She never talks about what was actually in their prenuptial agreement. I think this entire discussion really hinges on what she agreed to, versus what she was willing to part with. Unfortunately, the kid ended up as the pawn, and still is today.

You are wonderful.. We are , I am going to say it not wealthy. My daughter stayed with her abusive husband for 26 years and is still with him. She has w grown children now ,he has her brain washed. I really wish she had your show 26 years ago. P.S. I really appreciate and respect what you, are doing for women in general. I feel what you went through as a young woman and I was a mom seeing you cry. Now you are helping others. What a great person you are. CeeCee Mc

I'm 33, never married, would love to get married. HOWEVER, it seems like EVERYONE today wants A WEDDING, but they don't want A MARRIAGE. My dad raised me to keep this constantly in my mind - he died right in front of my mom and me 3 years ago after a horrible short cancer battle…he and my mom would've been married 40 years this year. I will live and die by what my dad told me and I stand by it.

B I have always been a fan of yours as I like strong women and you always projected this confidence and strength. I will say years ago when you started dating your ex and you had the show with him I was like girl NO! To me I thought he was limp and whiny and I could see you just were not that into him. Look it happens we have all settled for someone for whatever reason but seriously I was hoping you were going to do a runner at that alter back in the day. I have always told people that he is obviously the problem as whatever you have been it has never been malicious or hateful and I could see you just wanted out and if he was decent he would have done the right thing and not been a greedy petty grubby small man.. I’m glad you’re educating people and I wish you all the happiness that you have earned and deserve.
