Thanks for making this video - I just replaced my wife's trunk latch and your instructions were perfect. Couple tips for others doing this - (1) This is a great opportunity to replace the license plate bulbs with LEDs since the inner panel has to come off to access those and (2) the outer panel has clips at the bottom that are a huge pain to get out - you can still access the switch without removing the whole outer panel as long as you get the top clips to release (the panel will safely bend back just enough to get to the switch. Thanks again!

Thanks for the tips. Which outer panel do you mean that will safely bend back to allow space to get to the switch? if you can clarify this, would be a big help!

It fixed my problem(2016 CRV tailgate is unable to open in cold weather).
I have a 2016 CRV, the tailgate worked in the cold at the beginning.
The switch was replaced after a rear hit accident. We have the issue in the cold weather after that.//We noticed this issue after a year when we went to a cold area.
This winter I ordered a new switch from Amazon and replaced it with the help of a local car repair shop(I did most of the part but asked the help to remove the lower cover of the gate).
I went to the cold area again and it works as good as warm weather.
    Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!

THANKS! My dealer wanted to charge me over $310 for this repair. I looked up the Manufacturer Service Bulletin for this piece and it said this task should take a technician a half hour. You would think that the price of the part at the dealer $80 + (0.5 * $135 dealer labor rate) = the whole job should be $147.50... but they wanted to charge $310. What a scam. I ended up just buying the part and using your handy video to install it myself.

Thank you. Followed your directions and bam, it worked. Funny thing is I took the old one apart. Underneath the rubber is a little small push button switch. So, if you're having a hard time getting it to work, push the rubber piece dead center. Thank you again. Bought the new switch from Amazon, $28.00, free shipping. January 2023.

Outstanding video! Would not have attempted project without it. The trim pieces are well made and sturdy. Get your fingers in at the notches and pop it out. Really helpful to have 2nd pair of hands to get the outer piece off. My 2015 model part was $25 from Amazon and took me couple of hours because I had no experience. No special tools needed. Old switch was working, but response delays occurred as temps dropped. New switch had a quick response to touch.

Thanks for the post. I have a 2016 CRV and I had the same problem. I got the door open from the inside with a flat head screwdriver. (There is a RUclips video on this). After that I followed your video step by step. I did have a little problem with the outer bottom panel since the 2 of 4 pin pieces didn’t come out. I had to pry it out with screw driver. Be careful not to cut yourself like I did on my thumb. After that, everything aligned up properly and simple to put everything back in place.

I just replaced the tailgate button of 2014 Honda CRV LX using your instructions. the new one works fine. but I managed to break couple of the pins. I HIGHLY suggest you seal the back of the new switch with duck tape before installing it. the reason the old switch doesn't work in the cold is that moisture goes inside the click mechanism and it freezes in the cold. by putting duck tape on the back, you can seal the button and prevent future problems.

@@shawndick9110 i didn’t take a picture. I just put several duct tapes on the part that has the wiring and screws. I put them horizontally and vertically and made sure it’s tight.
I live in Canada and it gets -30 here in winter. So far it’s been working great and I’m happy with it.
Just make sure you also order some plastic clips from amazon for Honda as backup in case you break the ones that are in your car. They are easy to break. You can grab them for 10 bucks.
Also my car needed 8mm socket for the bolts not 10mm. Make sure you have several sockets in different sizes just in case

I don't personally believe this information to be quite correct. I believe there's a rubber component that shrinks due to the cold weather thereby leading to issues. As an example, my tailgate, mind you that was replaced once under warranty by Honda, still has issues when it's not freezing temps outside ~40 degrees.

I have a 2012 honda crv. The diver door only locks manually. I changed the battery in key fob. The other doors don't always unlock key fob. The rear hatch door isn't opening all the time. I don't have a button to open it on the key, in the cat or a key on the door. Is it the actuator for the driver door? Could it be in valet mode?

I'm having trouble getting the outer panel to line up with the switch. Everything looks ok with the panel and switch but the top of the switch housing is only half-way up the cut-out in the panel. Is there a way to adjust the position of the switch? It looks like it needs to be moved up by about 2cm.

My 2016 Honda HRV has similar issue. The door indicator did not turn off when the hatch is closed. But I was able to open the hatch. Then I took my car to the dealer and after the dealer checked the issue the hatch lock stopped working completely (the hatch can not be opened at all now). The dealer said they just pushed the hatch harder and the hatch lock stopped working. I have no idea how you can make it stop working pushing it harder.
I tried to test the hatch lock with jumper wire and it did not actuate the lock. I am really confused. I checked the wiring diagram for my car and it looks like it can be a bunch of things (the hatch lock relay, the bad wiring, the hatch lock itself, the hatch open button and the computer). The computer looks like the expensive part to replace an not possible to diagnose without special equipment and it requires programming to match your keys in case to install the new computer unit.
