- How to troubleshoot the lift gate switch on the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 Honda CR-V. This is a common problem in cold weather. The tail gate will not open or will only open after multiple attempts. I will post a second video soon with steps for replacing the defective switch! HONDA OEM Part # for 12-16 CR-V Liftgate Tail Tailgate Trunk-Lock Switch = 74810T0AA02 (w/o SmartKey feature).
Part 2 for replacing switch:

This technique was a huge help in diagnosing my wife’s switch failure.
I replaced my switch today using part number 74810-T0A-A02 for my 2014 EX-L AWD (leather). To replace, you have to remove the inside plastic trunk panel. There's one screw to remove within the inside handle at the bottom of the tailgate door. The inside panel is fastened with snap clips and can be removed easily by prying the edges with flathead screw driver. Once removed, you'll see the tailgate switch which is fastened by two 10mm bolts and electric fastener (seen in video). Remove all. The tailgate switch should fall right out. I can't express how HAPPY I am now that my trunk opens in the cold (and with very little 'press' effort. Good luck to all who replace this...it's totally worth 15 mins and $40.
I have exl as well. So with smart key button it will be more than 2 wires in there. I wonder what are the colors and what colors did you short or connect with jumper for it to open? Thanks!
Thank you so much! You saved me so much grief.
Thanks. It was very helpful for me , the uncomfortable was to be inside the trunk 😅
Very helpful. How do you get that small white plug out? I can see it, but only reach it with a long flathead screwdriver. Not sure how to pop the tab and pull out with just a screwdriver. Thanks
Works on 2017 model as well thanks for the video helped me diagnose this today at work
Thank you!!!!
could you potentially rig up a manual switch to activate the tailgate from the inside?
Do you know how to adjust the height that the power tailgate opens? I have ur same car and I need to get the hatch to not open quite as wide so I can fit my Thule cargo carrier on top. Thanks for any help you can give me.
This has been happening to my crv 2015 when the weather is cold. On summer it’s working fine.
Me too! Really aggravating
mine works fine in warm weather but does this in freezing conditions. If i sit there for a minute i can get it open after multiple attempts. Would replacing the hatch fix my issue? sorry but it really wasnt clear to me if this is the case.
Hi John,
Have you replaced it yet. I am facing the same problem and the video would be great help.
Thanks!

Can i use the twist tie on the bread packet?
What was the Part number of the part for the Door switch you ordered?
The mechanic just replaced my radiator - 2015 Honda crv because the car was experiencing an overheating but I was surprised that after a few hours that the little screen on my dashboard show maintenance info and co display screen went blank and the shortcut bottom on my steering stopped working, the screen remained blank till now, i can not control the radio, volume or anything on my steering again, Please how do i get it working again?
Does anybody know if there is a aftermarket switch available?
Have u replaced it yet?
I have a 2014. I just want to make sure I can repair - my model has no button to auto open my tailgate from my inside or from my remote key. I must lift gate manually. Didn’t realize there are any wiring or switch.
I have an appt scheduled with Honda. I really do not want to have them rip me off.
Thank u!
Julie - I have now replaced the switch and will be posting the video shortly. The part is on eBay: "CR-V Liftgate Tail Tailgate Trunk-Lock Switch 74810T0AA02" for about $45. Honda wanted $110 just to diagnose the problem!
I have the same problem. Please upload the video how to replace it. Thank you very much.
Sorry for the delay!! part 2 video is here: ruclips.net/video/vt9bs3okMpQ/видео.html
I did the jump thing with a paper clip couple times, the third one did not work, any idea why?
I had this issue in my 2014 CR-V. The switch was replaced earlier this year at the dealer. I have an extended warranty from Honda, so it was covered. It happened again and they replaced it today. Seems like the switch is a bad design.
this is what i have heard from multiple people. Im not sure replacing the switch will solve the issue. it is also hard to find much clear information on this. i would appreciate it if you solved the issue you could let me know please.
How is the new switch working out for you? Does it open in the cold?
Anthony, yes cold is the true test! my new switch works fine in cold or rain weather. Part 2 video is here: ruclips.net/video/vt9bs3okMpQ/видео.html
I'm having the same problem. First it was a blown fuse and now the switch doesn't work after 5 uses.
John where can I get the part. Do u have part number?
Julie, check ebay and do a search for 74810-T0A-A02 you should find about 4 or five sellers that carry it.
My tailgate will open manually but the fob won’t make it lift. Remote is working well otherwise.
i have that same exact problem. Did you find a solution?
I got the part number listed and installed it and it still won’t release, what is the next option?
All four passenger doors must be unlocked in order to open the tailgate. The passenger door locks are prone to failure. I've replaced all four on my 2013 CR-V. Try to open every door from the outside first. If one will not open, manually unlock it from inside. Then try the tailgate again.
You need to do another video on how you got the wire unplugged because when you took off the cover it was already unplugged and coming out of the hole . In real life it is plugged in to the far right of the port and is impossible to get to with out some kind of a special tool . I am very disappointed in this car and your video.
Steve; I have watched 12 videos explaining how to determine what is wrong (this video) PLUS how to replace the tailgate opener switch. -> I found smartjohn's 2 videos by FAR THE BEST explaining all of this for me. -> However you have spotted a minor issue with this video. I wand up following the 2nd video to fix it ... THEN when I could reach with my hand to where it is plugged in ... I then UNplugged it and did the test. But there may be an easier way to do that test opening with a wire (I used a paper clip). Best wishes,. Bob
