Dude. Thank you so much. I'm taking care of my son's car while he's deployed (Army). I didn't even realize that part was supposed to move. It was rusted in place. A little WD-40 and it works like a charm. I owe you a beer if you're ever in Cleveland. Peace.
Mr. Jackson, you are a genius ! Same problem on 2010 model. Searched everywhere for a solution, got it fixed within 5 minutes after watching this video
Your video was very helpful! As pointed out in earlier replies, lubrication of both the hinge/ spring above the handle along with lubrication of the interior mechanism fixed our Fit with the same problem.
Thanks, Damon, I took our 2013 Fit to the dealer, he said he would have to tear the whole door apart and it would take hours. You video saved me hundreds of dollars. I, like others on this list, owe you a beer (at least). Next time you are in Ashland, WI look me up :)
yes it takes a good couple of hours to repair these Fit hatches latch and handle issues. improper lubrication is the main cause of all the Fit hatch latching etc issues. the relase handle cross pin shaft rust really horribly and freeze the handle up, raw bare steel pin thats wet all the time so it rusts up horribly. they shoulda used stainless or aluminum for the pin shaft...
@@fast68chevy found out that WD 40 is a really bad thing for a vehicle lock because it actually removes the grease that is inside the assembly , always use water proof grease , plumbing grease works great for them
This was extremely helpful, thanks! But... you only told us what the problem was, but not what the permanent fix is! Fortunately a lot of folks in the comments pointed out that lubrication is the fix. Let me try some white lithium grease on that thing... mine's a 2008 Honda Fit. Let's see if I can get it to work. I'll come back and mention the result...
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this video. I rarely use my trunk because of that stupid little white circle! Please don’t ever delete this lol
Hi Mr. Jackson - I had the same problem with my 2009 Fit and I went through the fix in your later video. However, the real problem is that the latch is rusted and not working. There is another RUclips video “Honda Fit Sticky Tailgate Latch Handle Repair” that shows you how to replace the latch and even gives you the Honda parts numbers. Your video helped me to open the door so I could replace the latch. Thanks!! I don’t know what I would do without RUclips and people like you!!!! (Probably be pretty broke from going to the Dealer!!)
due to the pin shaft being regular plain bare steel and it is wet all the time under that applique panel, so it horribly rusts and freezes/jams the handle up. im doing the release handle on a 2012 Fit right now tonight, i drove the rusted pin out after scraping it all off as good as i could with a small knife blade, then i sprayed it with acetone and trans fluid mix and then i drove the pin out all the way, replaced it with a galvanized steel gutter nail its perfect same diameter as the pin, and lots of red grease.. works awesome perfect now yay..
Thanks for this - helped me troubleshoot my 08 Fit problem a lot faster. Lubricating all the parts in question, PLUS the exterior handle did the trick for me. I think the problem was primarily the handle - it's exposed to the elements and dirt and got pretty seized up. WD-40 from the inside and outside there plus a lot of moving in and out loosened it up and now it works a treat.
Fixed it thanks to your video! All I did was remove that access panel with a regular screwdriver (took 2 seconds), then sprayed lubricant all over in their, and then importantly I sprayed lubricant on the outside of the car around the pull handle for that latch including the visible spring mechanisms for that; now the exterior latch handle retracts as it should (but did not) after pulling on it to open the hatch! :)
THANK YOU! Been bugging me for a while. Firestone told me I needed to pay several hundred to replace the latch! Thanks to your video, I needed a screw driver and about 10 seconds. Again... THANKS! (You gotta' love RUclips!!!)
Great on the video. Thank you. I have a 2012 same problem. I too came up with a "fix". Hang a large bungee cord on the wire (both ends). Tie the cord into a large knot to keep from closing into door. The weight of the bungee cord hanging on that wire, makes it open...either way you go...you're saving about $300 to have the part replaced.
This is not the only fault that can appear to be as described. What can happen is that the 'hook' in the latch mechanism can get jammed internally, requiring a whole replacement of that lock assembly. But when the door won't open because it is jammed in the closed position, you cannot then open the tailgate door to fix the problem! Overall, a very bad design by Honda - as is so often the case with their cars.
This Video was VERY Helpful. A Quick Fix 1. Grease The Locking Mechanism In The Door or WD40 will work for awhile. 2. Spray WD40 Into The Door Handle and wipe off the excess ASAP. You see After a few years the lubricant evaporates. MrZerr0
I found that I just have to push the handle (from the outside) back into the "closed" position, then lock the doors and wait until I hear the trunk latch close. Then I can unlock it and open it.
I had that sticky handle problem and wd-40 wouldn’t fix it. Gun guys swear by CLP-Break Free, it wicks its way into places wd-40 won’t go. I sprayed some and it took a couple days, but has worked good since.
My wife's Fit is identical to yours, she encountered the same problem. Between this and your other video I was able to get it working again. Time will tell if it stays fixed or not. Thanks for the info!
How exactly did you fix it? I'm having the same issue with my Fit and I saw the same parts as in this video, and I can get the latch to work fine until I lock it, then I have to force the latch back in with both thumbs before it'll unlock.
HERE IS THE FIX! I took the door apart and found that every ones comments agree with what I found. Open the rear hatch so it is level with the pavement (it is easier to see the latch this way.) Shine a bright flashlight into the handle latch on the outside of the door that you use to open it. Attach the hose that comes with the can of spray lube and pinpoint spray the hinge, spring and end caps. Now work the handle back and forth until the spring in the latch returns it back where it belongs. Might have to repeat this step until it works.
Excellent video! Thanks. I can actually listen for it now. When I hit the unlock key I can hear if only my side doors unlock, or if all of them unlock. Thanks again!
This has been a problem for us for a while now, very frustrating. While you didn't really tell us how to fix it, it did make us laugh! Between this problem and the ac not being sufficient for the car, I can't wait to trade this in for a different make/model.

behind the panel that the latch release handle is inside of,. the top sid eof the handle assbly is where the rusted pin and problem is. always is wet every time it rains etc, and so the pin rusts horribly. and freezes the handle up. some really good spray lube with a spray straw would be a good way to get to the top of the handle assy behind the panel. if you can spray right over the "top" of the figer well part of the release handle assemly the shaft and spring are right there. up from underneath away from the hatch surface side of the handle assmbly
Thanks. Having the same problem, no idea how to fix it (other than how you did manually from inside). It gets stuck every time from outside and such a terrible design. It looks like a cheap plastic knob, on a part that's used thousands of times...
Thank You so much. I just opened my trunk aftet it being stick for months. The idea jist hit me this morning to Google the problem. Thank you. Now, how we we fix it?
Funny. When I purchased my 2012 fit back in late 2014, and started driving it in early 2015, the hatch quickly gave me problems. It kept trying to lock when driving, and couldn't, so it would just keep trying to lock over and over. I had to take it to the dealership, and they found out the locking mechanism was messed up, and ended up replacing it.
I would be careful with NotAnExpert's advice, good as it is. For the the sake of clarity, the LATCH is the collective bits that keep the door closed. The HANDLE manipulates the latch. yeah, I thought similar when I read that comment......the WD-40 is actually a great start for loosening up any gunk that has clogged it up....once that's sorted and it's operating normally, add some lube lube if you wish......if it's still not working then you may be looking at failure within the actuator
he expansion of the diameter of the cross pin due to the rusting of it,. is what causes it to freeze jam. rust on the pin in the holes of the plastic. expansion. too muh diameter of rusted pin for the holes in plastic parts. so it is real tight

Vertical video syndrome. makes things damn near unwatchable... ill suffer through it cause i need to get into my trunk. Imma be royally pissed if there's no solution
What do you mean by a Pro? A Honda mechanic? I tried and they tell me there is nothing wrong with it; they just lubricated it. I have to lubricate mine weekly.
Watching this on mute at work. I just want to know where the damn button is to unlock the trunk. We rented this car recently and looked all over the place around the driver's seat. LOL I think I unlocked every other thing possible EXCEPT what I wanted to do - open the trunk for someone. Finally did it manually. No button in the front anywhere?
Good to know thanx cuz I know I'll rent this Zipcar model again. I like it, its fast, compact, but sometimes the steering wheel is too much in alignment with the speed limit console so its not always an easy glance at the speedometer without lower or raising my head as the steering wheel is a block...at least for my height anyway (average height).

I agree, “stupid thing”. My latch handle is corroded so it remains in opening position. I hafta push it back down to get the hatch to close properly.

HERE IS THE FIX! I took the door apart and found that every ones comments agree with what I found. Open the rear hatch so it is level with the pavement (it is easier to see the latch this way.) Shine a bright flashlight into the handle latch on the outside of the door that you use to open it. At the top of the handle is the hinge; if it is like mine it has a rusty spring and rusty end cap on each end of the hinge. Get a bottle of spray grease from Wal-Mart www.walmart.com/ip/CRC-White-Lithium-Grease-10-Oz./16817414 , Do not use WD-40 it will evaporate over time. Attach the hose that comes with the can of spray lube and pinpoint spray the hinge, spring and end caps. Now work the handle back and forth until the spring in the latch returns it back where it belongs. Might have to repeat this step until it works.
NotAnExpert thank you
My 2009 fit latch will not stay closed! Now, the back interior light won't go out and it keeps killing my battery!!!! UGH!!!!
Thanks!
My 2007 fit doesn't have that big square hole inside, it has a fucking tiny circle hole so you have stick a screw driver and just feel it.
Thank you thank u thank u
Having the same problem..
Thanks man
Vertical video syndrome.
makes things damn near unwatchable... ill suffer through it cause i need to get into my trunk.
Imma be royally pissed if there's no solution
Leave it to the PRO. 😂👍
What do you mean by a Pro? A Honda mechanic? I tried and they tell me there is nothing wrong with it; they just lubricated it. I have to lubricate mine weekly.
Prob just some lube?
Watching this on mute at work. I just want to know where the damn button is to unlock the trunk. We rented this car recently and looked all over the place around the driver's seat. LOL I think I unlocked every other thing possible EXCEPT what I wanted to do - open the trunk for someone. Finally did it manually. No button in the front anywhere?
no, no separate trunk button. its considered a door, locking and unlocking the doors does the same to the trunk
Different on a 2015
With such an ongoing problem, I cant believe Honda removed this access door from the newer Honda Fits.
I guess they just want us to go to the dealership for all repairs.
3rd Generation fix ruclips.net/video/-YTrKrG8p-o/видео.html
my 2007 honda fit is driving me Crazy with this problem, like half the time the key doesn't want to turn but it also does this shit its annoying
Shit worked
Or, just push unlock twice...
Well, I suppose this can satisfy one's curiosity, but as you say, it doesn't FIX the problem.
I just posted my resolution to the issue ruclips.net/video/cUXxmXkLxaw/видео.html
Just repeats the obvious.
Dumb video... does not tell you how to fix. imo
Okay, maybe not dumb video, but more of an incomplete video.....it did help me get started
In my video description it says it's not a fix. Also included is the link to my resolution, which isn't a fix, but will make life a lot easier to opening and closing the hatch.
I am glad you watched and got something out of it.
Thank you!
Thanks man
