    Allright! I feel like I conquered the world! It has been months since my pass-through garage door wasn't locking me in or out! I even bought a Cracker Barrel Friday fish fry lunch - which would have been CHEAP if it fixed the problem - for a man-friend to adjust it (I am a single 66-year old female, easily frustrated trying to figure out what was wrong and thought it was just a loose handle), but it still didn't work...then I found YOUR video, stopped it at the point where you flashed the Kwik-Set Exterior Entry Door Latch replacement parts so I could write it down, drove over to Lowe's and in just a half of one day (I admit to being a slow learner - Ha ha ha) it is working! Thank you! Thank you! Cindy from Phoenix, AZ

      @@jtemme76 Hi, jtemme76,
      I had tried that for a half an hour and it worked in the past. If you can get the bolt to slide just until the taper part, my last experience was this worked. After I posted this, I thought: I need a tool to cut the bolt. I bought an Oscillating Multi-Tool and a bald made for metal. It took longer to get by battery from storage in the basement, and change to the metal-cutting bald than the work itself. That bolt was cut in about a minute! The door opened easily and a screwdriver got the latch assembly out. I picked up a new one tonight, and I’ll have that door handle working as good as new tomorrow morning.
      Now I have a new tool, and I’ve been wanting one of these for a while.
      Thanks for the response I found no videos on this problem but since I saved the old latch maybe I’ll make one and post it.

I have ordered a new doorknob set from Amazon for 12 bucks and guess I will need to run a 1" wood drill bit thru the backset opening to allow for the extra room needed for an adjustable one. If you know an easier way let me know.

      He did show what broke. The latch is worn out because the metal is worn away. You can’t repair these. You have to fix them by replacing the latch. Take a look at the tumbler area on the old one he held up and the new one he held up. The old one all the metal is worn away. Common issue for heavy use front doors.

    • @JonathanLarson-CoolJon
      @JonathanLarson-CoolJon Год назад +1

      @@jaytyler3076 Yep, I used a flat, sturdy piece of metal I found lying around (I think it was the clip from a garage door opener remote) and a skinny screwdriver to push the latch mechanism open. Had to shove them between the door and the door frame to get at it. There was much cursing involved but eventually I got it open. I found a video of a locksmith fixing this same type of latch and it took him like 10 minutes to do the same thing, so that was my inspiration.

    • @1djbecker
      @1djbecker Год назад

      With access on the inside handle you can take off the handleset. Using a screwdriver, or pretty much anything, you can open the latch further than the door handle will.
      Replacing the whole latch is the easiest and most certain solution.
      The latch shown in this video is known as a 'deadlatch', or casually as an entry latch. It has a slider that prevents the door from being carded. It's usually used on entry handles with locksets.
      The other type is a common/interior/passage latch. It doesn't have a slider, although better ones have an anti-friction pad that might be confused at first glance. They are used on entry doors with a separate deadbolt. You can substitute a deadlatch but the trim plate profile is different.
      In a pinch it's possible to disassemble and lubricate the Kwikset/Baldwin latches. To do this you'll need access to the inside by separating the latch into two sections. Inspect the mechanism that sets the door offset. There is a roll pin that pushes down on two black plastic sliders. Those sliders are guided by slots on either side of the tube. Push out the roll pin that sets the offset and use a small flat screwdriver to push down the plastic sliders as the roll pin did. The two sections will separate. You can now reach the sides to lubricate. Reassembly is just lining up the parts and pushing in the roll pin.
      Use a *tiny* dab of clear waterproof grease. People unknowingly rub against the latches. No one wants mystery grease stains on their clothing.
      To fully disassemble the latch tube you can drive out the rivet. If you have to go this far it's probably because the parts are worn beyond use. It's a bit fiddly to put back together.
      Finally that sleeve isn't for worn out doors. It's for so-called "trailer door" installations where the latch is retained by a press fit.

The latch assembly is usually still the same as as the latch used with a regular knob assembly. Often you can identify it by looking at the plate on the edge of the door. If you still can't identify it, you can do a google search of latches, and look at the image to see if you can identify it. Does the latch have a square hole, a plus shaped slot, or a minus shaped slot for the tailpiece?
