  • Over time items that use electricity can get a short in their electrical cords and cause the item to stop working or create a fire hazard. This video shows you how to splice together electrical wires and how to use heat shrink tubing to cover the wires for neat and safe wire repairs.

    I learned the western union splice in grade 9 in 1975. Been using it ever since. Thanks for the reminder. I think the shop teacher may have called it a western bend, though it was a while ago, lol. Thumbs up!

    Hello @Flashback502,
    Thank you for your tutorial! It was clearly explained to two non-electrically oriented women. Your video helped my daughter and me reconnect the power cord to her internet router after her kitten chewed it up. The Western union twist worked!!!! 🎉

    Excellent tutorial. Shows a solid way to avoid the brittle joins that soldering can give. Sure soldering will be stronger, but this is pretty solid anyway, and really - if wires are under enough stress that soldering is required to keep it together - after a splice like this - well you've got bigger problems lol
    Thanks heaps, my man! It's given me confidence to have a go at cutting and re-joining cabling for a rather expensive headset (which the manufacturer won't just supply a replacement cable that I could solder on...bastards! lol). I've done other solder-less joins in the past that just weren't as solid - I can't wait to give this a try.

    I would solder the connection and put shrink tubing over it. Everyone has a way that works for them and this is what works for me. My butane solder iron has a torch tip I use to shrink the tubing. The tubing will shrink down to half it's size. Use that as a guide so you don't select a size of tubing that is too large a diameter to shrink down to the size you want.

    You should open all the wire hairs , intertwine them together and then twist them. After that , put silicone paste generously and then the srinking tube over it and heat it. You will have a perfect water seal connection. Your method is pretty good if it won't be expose to outside weather. Good job , though. PS. If you could solder them before , is even better.

    I like the Western Union splice. I wish I had seen this prior to using the crimp-on butt connectors, because I don't have a lot of faith in them with stranded wire (though I did tin the wires with solder as a precaution). This would have been easier as I am using shrink wrap on top of the butt connectors anyway. Plus, I didn't know if it would be safe to use a lighter, but the hair dryer I tried sure wasn't doing the trick! (I'll keep the lighter moving, of course.) Thanks, good video which gets directly to the point without a lot of chitchat.

    That was a perfect demo. Thank you!
    My dad always had me take the two bare ends, twist them each lightly, trim each to length for appropriate wire nut. Insert both ends exactly evenly and twist until ends catch the threading. Then, twist tight. Complete by wrapping in electrical tape.
    Is the heat shrink a stronger bond physically for the cord? Is it a better connection to conduct electricity without heat build up? Is one way better than the other?

    • @Flashback502
      @Flashback502  3 года назад +1

      Tape can come lose overtime, but will work fine for a lot of things, but if you have something that is handled a lot would heat wrap. and twist for strength.

    Liked, subbed, and belled! Thanks flashback 502! I’m going to give you credit on my upcoming series of RUclips videos re: salvaging a Riccar “Supralite” model R10S.2 vacuum cleaner that I found in pieces by the dumpster this week. It did not even occur to me to put the heat shrink tubing on the wire first, before doing the “ Western Union” connection.

    Thanks for the twist example. I have been doing it halfway right. I use an inexpensive heat gun I purchased online. I cringe when I see flame applied to heat shrink tubing.
