    The make or break marker is going to be server meshing. Unless that is done, it will never be an MMO, but only a Battlefield type game for a few dozen players per server.

    • @tenpoundfortytwo
      @tenpoundfortytwo  8 месяцев назад +7

      I would look at server meshing as the final boss (on the tech side), but even if they suddenly delivered it tomorrow, CIG would still have to prove they can deliver good gameplay.

    • @518UN4
      @518UN4 8 месяцев назад +3

      Not even Server Meshing, just the servers in general. We even have desync problems in AC with very little player count and no ai. Something is really broken there and just Meshing broken servers together won't help that much either.

    • @AngelicStreak
      @AngelicStreak 8 месяцев назад

      @@518UN4 That is not necessarily true, though. Currently, each server is overloaded, because they need want to have what, at least 100 people in each UNIVERSE? Now, server meshing will allow them two things: 1) Drastically decrease the player count per server, which will end the critical overload, 2) Whenever a server is detected to malfunction or act weirdly, all the players will be seamlessly moved to another brand new server. And lastly, don't forget another piece of the puzzle -- Replication Layer separation, which will again decrease the server load. So believe me when I say to you: Server meshing is the make or break marker.

      @@tenpoundfortytwo Good gameplay not that hard. There are hundreds of successful games - some of which these devs made themselves - to build off. And gameplay can always be refined. So, it's NOT make or break.
      Also, there's nothing mysterious about the incoming gameplay systems. What you see is basically what you get, and clearly people like what they've seen. 🤷🏿‍♂️

    I disagree. The things that are coming in 3.23 can already be said to be improvements over existing things, so I don't know what we would need to wait to see there. What _will_ make or break the project's future is the patch, or series of patches, that bring Server Meshing online. _That_ will be the moment of truth - will it work as intended, or will CIG have to radically change its concept of "hundreds or thousands" of players in the same pocket of space, scale back ambitions of many new star systems, etc? That's what will determine the fate of this thing, not some UI improvements and hangar systems we can already see are better designs than the current things in place. That's why the patch with these items is a 3.23 patch and not 3.3, let alone 4.0.

    • @rooster1012
      @rooster1012 8 месяцев назад +3

      We were never told that we would have hundreds of thousands of people on a shard, most games only have a max of 5000 players per shard so don't expect more than that. Server meshing just reduces the load in an area and will never support thousands of people in a compact area due to technology limits this is why you will see instancing coming into this game.

    The only "make or break" thing left is server meshing, since THAT not working would ACTUALLY have fundamental implications for the game rather than just mildly disappointing some people and beckoning reworks.

    What I think is when SC turns into a proper game when progress won't be a 2-3 day long, but several weeks or month AND most importantly when organizational gameplay comes into play. What do I think of?
    - Company owned ships that anyone in the org. can claim and retreive
    - Any party member could fly a ship AND request take off permissions !
    - Any party member would be able to purchase commodities to other party members ships as destinations
    - Any members onboard a ship could see the cargo area for loading the HULL-C, not only the ship owner
    - Dynamic economy
    - Base building
    Then we are talking about something 🙂

    I agree that this a BC/AC patch. Can they build a feature in the studios, for both SP and then branch it and scale it for a MMO game? However, we are still looking at a patch focussed on game assets and traversal. There are still very important game features not here yet, like a proper factions system. Even the original Freelancer game had a more advanced factions/reputation system then we have now. We are also yet to see faction outposts or player base building for a universe where player actions change the game environment. We still do not have any simple dynamically controlled player sector control or castle game mechanics. These are very common in many past and present MMORPG.

    I have mentioned to my friends that "This is the biggest Star Citizen patch" and they always respond with, didn't you say that about the last patch? I think this really shows that CIG are putting more devs on SC. With S42 being done, we are finally seeing the effects of more devs on SC. This is the make or break patch. Can they provide with more devs on the project, or will it just be the same development hell that we are going through where they make tools for tools so that they can make tools - and never make a game.
    That being said, I am extremely hopeful.

  • @shh532

    3.23 will be THE killer patch if they can get what they've promised in for backers, but it will take IMO Vulkan for it to be that I'll really actively start pushing free flights in my friends circles. ATM (and for years) I've shown off SC to people and talked about it/defended it, but I've also actively said 'don't spend money unless you like what you see now, warts and all.'
    If Vulkan can come in and make it so way more people get playable performance, coupled with all the QOL features, it'll be the first time in a free flight I'll really try to host stuff for people. There's been rumours DLSS 2 and FSR 2 are coming with 3.23 which would be fairly huge for smoothing things out, but Vulkan is critical.
    The other big issue though is still the lack of content. We simply need so much more to do, so much more depth and some proper ideas about vertical progression in ships, gear, rep, etc. Hopefully the UGFs help with that. Meshing will also need to be in before SQ42 launch if they want to have SC be a full and attractive experience for people done with the campaign.

    Going to reserve judgement on this being the definitive 'make or break' patch - I think 4.0 will be that moment: if server meshing works as intended then they can really push forward with making the game part of the game more fun... if server meshing doesn't work then they are always going to have issues with NPC AI unless they can find a way around the problems of having a single server managing a whole star system

    Whilst all the new stuff that is being added in 3.23 is great for the game I think the only make or break feature for Star Citizen is sever meshing. At the moment they’ve made an online game plagued with networking issues that negatively impact almost every aspect of gameplay, which are only exacerbated whenever they have any sort big event like XT, free flys etc. If CIG can’t get this sorted by the time the game eventually releases then (as an online game) it will be dead in the water!

    But we already know that many of the features coming in 3.23 won’t be complete. EVA with no push pull, not all ships and locations will have mini-maps, distribution centers won’t have underground areas, etc. Trying to pinpoint a true make or break moment after 12 years is feudal but IMO the next super important moment for SC is when Squadron releases. It will probably be the largest influx of new SC players we’ve seen and for CIG to fully capitalize on it, they should get SC into a functional 4.0 state by then. We don’t need 50 star systems by then but all major tech pillars complete and working, decent performance, minimal bugs, multiple star systems and complete game loops and game systems would help them retain many of those players as they then build out the rest of the star systems over the next decade+.

    Re: Master Modes (MM) into the Persistant Universe (PU), remember that the PU is still a development and testing environment! I know people "play" in it as if it's a finished game, but. it. isn't.
    Throwing MM into the PU is the best way to get large scale testing for balance purposes, hands down; most backers never interact with the various "testing" shards (eg, PTU, EPTU, etc) and so they can't provide more than speculative commentary. This decision by CIG will allow them to glean ambient performance metrics as soon as they activate the new patch.

    Remember 10pound42 just about every 3.23 feature brings nothing new to the game..there’s no new territory no new turf no expansion of the galaxy, its mostly about just quality of life stuff that they’ve been putting off forever, that they’re finally getting around to now, after the first time you go through the new features you’ll be still in the same boring system of Stanton wondering what to do that’s the true definition of what 3.23 is all about. Many star citizen players are quite happy with just having Stanton and doing their little tactical shooter stuff and that’s all they want out of the game and that’s a damn shame, especially considering the hundreds of millions of dollars we have given for all variety of ships meant for an entire persistent universe.

  • @RoLo87rl
    @RoLo87rl 8 месяцев назад +1

    Well, I think 3.23 is a necessary facelift and also the definitive QoL improvement that we all need.
    But, I also think that there are other technical points that really are a critical point, of no return and very important, I am talking about Vulkan, to improve once and for all our local performance and adapt the graphics to a current generation. On the other hand, the replication layer (recently postponed to June in the roadmap update) will basically allow us to continue playing if a server fails and finally server meshing, which will allow us to share the gaming experience with thousands of players simultaneously. and it will improve the response of the servers by limiting the areas into something acceptable for them.
    I hope that Vulkan and the replication layer arrive with 3.23 in June and I also hope that the current cards do not begin to fragment and stretch over time. We are talking about the fact that we are almost halfway through February, the first quarter will pass us by and we will have to wait until June (6 month delay) to be able to enjoy and test the new improvements. We are still overshadowed by citizencon and the content of this 3.23, but let's not forget that it has been delayed again. In addition, the expectations of being able to start testing Server Meshing this summer are fading.
    At the moment they continue to deliver content for the next version 3.22.1-X that will consist of adjustments, tweaks and other things for arena commander and star marine... isolated game modes, which do not present anything new compared to other games in the market. I wonder why they don't add the new FPS AI and the new AI in vehicles in games against the machine PvE mode in AC or SM? This way we could test the new AI in an isolated environment and with an immediate and real response to the work they have done. In this way, perhaps people would find an incentive to continue testing these modes and, above all, the AI would work as it should.
    I'm tired of waiting and waiting, every year I tell myself, this will be the last year that I follow the project fervently, but my desire to be able to play it overcomes me. And yes, I am going to complain once again Jared, because we have been waiting for results for 12 years and we are your clients, we love you, but allow us to express our desperation. We live life, yes, but this is our hobby and the dates matter as much as the results. Maybe that's why we continue waiting. giving room to obtain better and definitive content.
    Regards @tenpoundfortytwo i love your content! I'm still waiting for Vulkan to safely renew my equipment thanks to your analysis of SC hardware. Thank you for your work!

Cargo missions from freight elevators, and a few things on the surface of distribution centers. Nothing game changing at all, the "summer" patch or whenever pyro and meshing and more citcon stuff come is what's gonna set the stage for SC as a game

    I disagree completely, what is being delivered is merely the FIRST iteration of finalized systems, either tier 0 or tier 1. What WILL make or break the whole project is the implementation of server meshing, how many patches that will take to get right, and TO BE CLEAR it needs to be MOSTLY RIGHT from the get go!! All the rest is but filling out of long promised functions, skill sets and game loops with the relevant systems and U.I. to get the job done. 4.0 will most likely be the thing that will "make or break" Star Citizen.

    • @tenpoundfortytwo
      @tenpoundfortytwo  8 месяцев назад

      I do agree that 4.0 is another key patch, but imagine if CIG suddenly delivered server meshing right now with the current game- sure server meshing would be cool, but the rest of the game would still be a mess! Ultimately, I suppose it's not the same people working on SM and all of the SQ42 features, so hopefully we'll see progress of both going forward!
      I'll be interested to see how much iteration some of the features get in the future- at some point CIG will lock down any more development on S42 in order to finish it. I would assume they would want S42 to basically mirror SC (feature wise) when it releases so new players can easily move across to the MMO. We'll see!

    @blazemonger1 8 месяцев назад

    Finalized versions? dude, what are you on about? 3.23 is going to be a milestone patch sure, it feel to me this patch will be the first one where most of the groundwork has been done and while not completely fleshed out is in a place where CIG can start building the game proper.
    3.23 will also be a mess, it will be broken and unstable and that is absolutely fine as that is what happens when you start making moves like CIG seems to start doing now. I can agree to this being the first patch where we may see the initial iteration of what will become the finalized versions of game mechanics and features sure, the point where we start the transition form dirty alpha to being "feature complete" and beta.
    The make or break moment will be when server meshing comes in, that is the core technology on which the entire game concept rests and if that does not work, Star Citizen as envisioned ends.
    So yes, it is a very important patch for sure, and you can feel the sense of this in everything CIG is doing, which started at the last Citcon. It wil be another 4-5 years though at least until we get to the "feature complete" stage and possibly beta. We are far from "make or break", at best this is where the experiments and "see if it works" ends and (as said above) the game building begins.

    I don't think there is any make or break for Star Citizen. It'll either mature into a product and slowly gain a playerbase and following, or it will simply continue on as it is lumbering along without much fanfare from anyone until eventually & CIG will cash in on their IP and the name to someone who will flog the player base mercilessly until it's a ghost town.
    It's not going to have the launch associated with a big MMO, but it might have the same ending.
    Either way, as grand and impressive as it is, I think they missed the boat by about a decade for SC to be a massively popular game. People these days don't just play trash games, they want trash games.
    I think they'll get there and I think we are going to love it, but I'm not sure how many people in the wider gaming space actually want a skill/gear based, leveless, soft-perma-death second life sci-fi simulator that costs hundreds of dollars and has as many keybinds as a 747. I do hope I'm wrong though - if CIG pull off the vision it will be incredible.

    SC is a cobbled together shit show of a game that BARELY even approaches a playable experience a prettier map system that doesn't function as expected is exactly what i would expect from what ive seen in game and in content surrounding it.
    SC can be cool but it wont be the only people i see playing when i jump on are people who are IN the game for THOUSANDS of dollars they aint playing cuz its good they are playing cuz they are invested lol.

    I dont think its a make or break for everyone. However im fully confident that 3.23 will not love up to the expectation. A very bugged starmap, the insane issues with ships weve seen will now happen with csrgo hangars like items stuck in the ether, hangar not even working etc.
    Its nice they working on it, but a working version.... i dont think so
