    The two nurses shown in this episode are real people as well. The woman that befriended Eugene is portraying Renee Lemaire, and the other woman is representing Augusta Chiwy. 💯✌

  • @Dana001
    @Dana001 Год назад +12

    Renee was a civilian who was visiting her parents who lived in Bastogne for Christmas. When the Germans broke through and the Battle Of The Bulge commenced she volunteered to help. She did die in the bombing of the church where they had the hospital set up. What they didn't show was that she had rescued 6 of the patients and was killed going back inside for a 7th. The other nurse, who's real name was Augusta Chiwy, was blown through a wall into another section of the building but survived. There's no real evidence that Renee and Eugene met but the makers of the show honoured her by including her story.

    Plasma is the serous fluid that can be separated from whole blood. It contains platelets and clotting factors which help the wounded soldiers who are “bleeding out”, while also providing fluid volume which helps to maintain a livable blood pressure. The good thing about plasma is that you don’t need to type & cross match it to individual blood types, and it can be frozen, or even freeze dried and reconstituted with sterile saline and STILL be beneficial to the wounded who are bleeding out.

    This was shot in a sound stage in the height of summer. The breath that you see was added digitally later.
    There wasn’t any going home. They were surrounded by Germans at this point.
    There are a lot of subtle things in this. Eugene addresses Renee with the familiar “tu.” She replies with a more forma “vous.” But he isn’t completely shut out. She throw him the chocolate later.
    Some people volunteered to be medics. If you get a chance to see Hacksaw Ridge you will learn about Desmond Doss who was a was a medic. Worth seeing. Other people got assigned to be medics like others were assigned to be cooks.
    It seems like Guarnere picked up a souvenir from Lulu’s.
    Mortars are weapons that can throw a shell high up in the air and then in drops down and explodes. If both sides are dug in and you can’t see the enemy you can shoot a mortar up to their position. These were generally pretty small and portable. When you get to see The Pacific Sledge is with a mortar squad.

Medics, Dics, Nurses, Chaplains.. we’re all considered “non-combatants” under the Geneva Convention. We carry weapons, but only to protect ourselves and our patients from harm. And our patients include ENEMY soldiers.

    I don’t think that there is any easy answer for why the war was being fought.
    After WWI ended a peace was made at Versailles. This treaty was unfair to Germany. When the world wide depression hit in the 20s there were reasons that led to the rise of Hitler and the Nazis. The Allies, Britain and France, did not want a repeat of WWI so they pursued a policy of appeasement, giving Hitler what he wanted in the Rhineland, Austria, the Sudetenland, and Czechoslovakia. When Hitler invaded Poland in Sept 1939 they said, “Enough!” WWII got started.
    If you want to watch more videos on this you could watch “The World at War,” a multiparty series. It is from the 70s but still holds up today. Movies might include, in sort of chronological order, Dunkirk, The Battle of Britain, Mrs. Miniver, Tora Tora Tora, … too many to list.

    Paratroopers were entirely voluntary, many did it for the extra pay, so they wouldn't be drafted later so they had some choice as to what they would do and so they'd be with volunteers instead of incompetent conscripts if things got bad
    Medics were mostly assigned based on testing and the current need for them. You didn't need any previous experience
    The fog and poor weather was deliberately chosen by the germans because it would prevent the allies from providing much air support against what little armored and mechanized forces they had left. Though the whole offensive was pointless and they knew it, none of the german generals seriously believed it was going to be successful and it was basically just trying to get themselves into a better position in the hope of forcing a negotiated peace, which was never going to happen at that point in the war

    Plasma is obtained from donated blood - say, you go to the Red Cross for a blood donation. They can separate any number of components from the blood - plasma, platelets, red blood cells. All of these, as well as whole blood, are useful for surgeries. Plasma has the added bonus that it can be used regardless of blood type, and is helpful for first responders because it can be used to maintain blood pressure and help with clotting.
    A mortar is a type of artillery piece. Unlike some of the artillery you've already seen (such as the 88mm cannons Winters destroyed in Day of Days) mortars have high arcs, and so can drop ordinance down into trenches. The ones in WWII, as well as modern ones, are relatively portable, usually only requiring a few men to move and set them up. The smallest German mortar of the time only weighed about 30lb, and could be fired by a two-man crew. That said, what Easy Company was attacked with was more likely the more common 80mm German mortar, which was much heavier (about 130lb) and required more men to operate - but still more mobile than an artillery piece (the 88 weighed about 16,000lb).
    As to why WWII was being fought. That's....complicated. It really goes back to WWI - after the Central Powers lost, they were forced into a peace that many of them thought to be unfair. This treaty, along with the Great Depression, made for a dire economic situation in Germany. That dire situation led to the rise of radicalism, notably the far-Right national socialists, the Nazis. Hitler, the leader of the national socialists in Germany, used the economic woes and the relatively weak government of Germany to take absolute control. He then began a campaign of annexing countries, betting on world leaders giving in rather than risking war - the same tactic Vladimir Putin would use to annex places like the Crimea this century. The breaking point came in 1939 when Hitler demanded Poland cede a strip of land to Germany and Poland refused. Hitler invaded, counting on Poland's allies to not join the war, a gamble he lost. Britain and France both declared war against Germany. The US would not join the war until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941 (which is a whole other complicated story).

    Under the Geneva covention, medics are considered non-combatans. Hence, to purposely fire at a medic is considered a war crime. However, they are allowed to carry personal weapons (normally a pistol) to protect themselves and wounded under their care.

    Wounds like that can be so severe that the pain alone can kill a person from shock. So the morphine isn't just to help them suffer less, it can directly save their life.

  • @usmcrn4418

    Syrettes.. = small syringes. Pre-filled and dosed injections of morphine that anyone can inject into a wounded person. But.. it’s important that you indicate how many syrettes any soldier has been given, as too much can be detrimental and even kill the person that you’re trying to save.

  • @brianmurphy8811
    @brianmurphy8811 Год назад

    A syrette is essentially a self-contained, disposable injection system. It has a needle, and a squeezable tube. The whole reason it was a big deal was because the medics in the company were almost out of Morphine, but still had to care for everyone. So, they were scrounging as many medical supplies as they possibly could.
    Yes, medics have guns.

    WWII was because Hitler, an evil tyrant, decided he wanted to rule Europe under his evil Nazi regime and was not happy until he took every country in his path. He invaded Poland in 1939, and thus, the war began. America got into the war after we were attacked by the Japanese ( Hitler's Ally) in Pearl Harbor ( a devastating attack on our Naval base there).
    England begged us to join for years before that, as they felt they were alone after France fell. Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minster at the time, said in his famous speech to Parliament that they would fight Hitler till the last man, even if they had to do it alone.
    Wars can't be called off because of the weather. War is fought until someone wins. Which usually means a lot of people die first. sad but true.
