Shifty's role was downplayed a lot in this series. That sniper shot he took was actually incredible in its own right, there are videos of the actual place on RUclips. Also, there was a moment where Shifty reported seeing a tree about a mile away that hadn't been there the previous day. I mean, a tree amongst a forest that he noticed was new. He reported it and command approved an artillery strike on it. Turns out the Germans had moved some of their own artillery and camouflaged it as a tree. By noticing a new tree among a forest he saved a lot of lives.
I've visited that spot. An amazing shot.
THIS!!!! Shifty was absolutely amazing. And I’m pretty sure he said that his dad was the amazing shot….but so was he. I want to read the book about him.

The German Prisoners part was true (although the number is in some dispute) - he was following orders as they had no capability to deal with POWs until they linked up with the forces coming from the beaches. Concerning the drunk soldier - there is a record of a court martial of a drunk soldier, but it is highly unlikely that Speirs shot one.
@@alanholck7995 I guess that Speirs lied to Winters, and claimed to kill more than he did. Or, maybe you're saying that Winters is lying.
@@tduffy5 Winters had to get a written release from Spiers to have those stories in his book. Spiers gladly provided the release, admitting the stories were true.
@@Farbar1955 Both Winters and Speirs were was in their late 80's when Winter's book was written (published 2006). The basic truth is that prisoners were shot; the number is in doubt.
It blows my mind when Speirs run through the Germans and then comes back through them again.

Speirs was definitely a Rockstar of the utmost degree!! I think I cry happy tears every time that scene comes on of him relieving Dike and just turning SUPERHERO!!!
Spiers run did take place, but, not exactly the way it's shown here. He actually ran through the no man's land between the German & American positions. He was an INCREDIBLE soldier.
Winters, by this time, was the Executive officer of 2nd Battalion. He had every company in the battalion to worry about, not just Easy. Sink was correct in not letting him run out there. Colonel Strayer was acting as the Regimental Executive office by then so Winters was the de facto CO of 2nd Battalion.

Funny story, During the annual Battle of the Bulge Reenactment in PA many years ago during the Prop Blast Bash in the E/506th barracks. we were sitting around with Wild Bill and 1 of are guys says to Bill " I'am going to visit the area were you fought , is their anything you want me to bring back for you?" Bill lowers his beer and looks him right in the eye and says "Yeah, if you could find my leg that would be great" then he smiled and we toasted to Bill's leg many times that night.

There are a lot of different versions of fake snow. For the background they might spray on a flocking, much like you would find on a flocked Christmas tree and supplement that with cotton batting like that used in making quilts. For falling snow they might use soap foam, paper products or even potato flakes. Each special effects team has it's own favorite method and material, depending on it's usage. Helping disguise the fact that they were shooting on a sound stage is the fog. There are machines that use water and air pressure to create fog and that obviously hides lots of things, like studio walls and ceilings, that they don't want to photograph.
Buck reminds me of what someone said about Thomas Lawrence (better known as the British war hero Lawrence of Arabia). He said that Lawrence believed that courage was like a bank account, and you could only draw from it so much. The problem with doing a good job in war is that your leaders will see that as a reason to keep sending you back to handle the toughest jobs until you're completely used up, and then they send you back some more.
Lt. Norman Dike was actually an excellent, exceedingly brave officer. At this point in the war, he had already won 2 Bronze Stars, 1 Silver Star, and, a Purple Heart. He just wasn't ready for company level command yet. He went on to serve with distinction in the Korean conflict, retiring as a Lt. Colonel in 1958.
Also, in the scene where he supposedly freezes up, he was actually NOT suffering a mental breakdown, he was apparently suffering a PHYSICAL breakdown from two bullet wounds to the chest.

Excellent review I love how you pointed out the different perspectives of the narrators. I have always felt that is one of the strengths of the show having you experience the war from different points of view, as each man experiences something different. The true story of Easy Company is amazing and the series does a really good job in showing it in a realistic way. Of course somethings were changed one of things that changes was the run that Spiers made in this episode. He did make the run to I company and back but in reality it was much longer than depicted in the show. In the show it appears to be a few blocks from where he started to going over the wall and then coming back. In reality he had to run about 3/4 of a mile to reach I company (most of it behind German line) and then 3/4 of a mile back, so 1.5 miles in total. The producers of the show choose to shorten the run both for time and because they felt no one would believe it if they showed how far he really ran. One case where reality was more dramatic than the movie! Great Review, don't apologize for getting emotional watching this show.
So, the tactic of detonating artillery at tree-level was a common tactic used by the Germans. It turned a tree into a shower of lethal wooden spikes. But the amazing thing was how they filmed that, because they wanted to accurately portray the artillery barrages. What they did apparently was create hollow trees, and blast high-pressure air through them, so they looked like trees that had been blown to bits by high explosives.

So there is a BIG debate about LT. Dike and the attack on Foy and him being wounded many go with the Clancy story who said that he noticed Dike being wounded but there is no mention of him being hit during the attack. so per the old CO E/506th living history unit who has copies of all the E co & 506th reports and spent alot of time with all the vets - "they hated him (Dike). The only thing they didn't like in the series is that it didn't show the absolutely massive foxhole he had the Co HQ guys dig for him. "It was as big as a hotel". (heard Wild Bill talking about that)
so Dike wasn't hit during the assault on Foy. A lot of people think he was due to the miniseries and some comments Clancy Lyall made (even though he never saw Dike during the assault). There’s absolutely no record of him being hit or mention in the morning report copies."
The outside scenes were filmed in Bourne Woods and Ashdown Forest in the UK, not on a soundstage.

Winters couldn’t lead the attack because his promotion to battalion meant he was in more an administrative role.
A furlough is sort of like an extended leave. Remember in the first episode the soldiers would get leave for a weekend. In episode five Winters got leave for a weekend in Paris. This furlough would mean a trip to the US, quite a reward.
There is a lot of skill in producing special effects like the explosions. The names of the techs that do this work are way down in the credits. Shout-out to them. There is some CGI in this series but not as much as there would be if it was made today. Remember this is more than 20 years old.
There are two big themes to this series. One is unit cohesion (Band of Brothers). How did these men stick together and not fall apart? The other big theme is leadership. We see examples of bad leaders in Sobel and Dike. (Yes, I’m aware of the arguments about each of these men.) We see good leaders in Winters, Lipton, and Spiers. Not so much for Spiers but for Winters and Lipton I would say servant leadership.
The dull shell that hit the foxhole Lipton and Luz were in may have been the result of sabotage. The Germans used slave labor in their weapons production. Workers in concentration camps and factories would purposefully make duds, risking their own lives.
To me the most powerful moment in this episode is when the casualties disappear in the chapel.
I don't watch "Behind the scenes", since early 90s Dracula. The actor was drinking coffee, cracking jokes, talking sports haha
It took away from the movie. Like now I don't see woods, now I think where they put windmachins, and fake snow.
How on earth did Spiers run with those gigantic cajones?
IMO, Spiers should have received the Medal of Honor for that incident...
