    from episode 1 to the scene where Boris and Legasov sat and quietly talked about their own impending deaths, the change in their attitudes towards each other was huge. Boris found his own humility and self perspective, and Legasov told him what he needed to hear, which was the truth: Boris had been the one man who could do what needed to be done to mitigate the disaster.

    incase you are wondering one of the retrofitted safeties is when the computer 'recommended' shutdown and dyatlov ignored it was taken from the operators hands. the computer was given power to take control and put the reactor into a safe shutdown on its own if it detected dangerous parameters.

    Welcome to the final episode...well done getting through this show...it is a tough one. I really like the way the makers of the show added the notes at the end to cover some of the things they got wrong, simplified, or made more dramatic...I just wish they had done more of that, or been more honest. For example, they say that "it has been reported" that everyone on the "Bridge of Death" died...but those reports are very much NOT true....so technically, they are being truthful, bur not quite. Other things they do not admit to, I can understand...such as the fact that Legasov was not even at the trial of Dyatlov and company...but it is kind of necessary to turn him into a kind of hero figure and have him do much more than he really did so that the story can be simplified enough for most folks to keep track of. I assume by now you have read the History vs Hollywood article, so you know most of the truth...at least I hope that is the case. ✌

    Thank you for sharing your reaction with us, Desiree! I know, it was difficult and scary to get through. Don't ever let anyone discourage you from learning more - keep looking for the truth, and use multiple sources, because no one has a monopoly on truth, not even snopes or reuters. You're a beautiful soul.

    To put things in perspective, 33,000 MW when converted to horsepower is 44,000,000. By comparison, the space shuttle uses around 37,000,000 horsepower.

    I like that they got the hanging out of the way at the start. Lotta tough pills to swallow in this miniseries. But you get to end with a few bits of good news. Some rays of hope after the darkness.

    Sasha was not Dyatlov. Dyatlov's first name was Anatoly. Sasha was the first name of Akimov if I remember correctly.

    Please check out these great historical shows:
    1) The Knick, 2 seasons of around 10 eps each -- centered around a hospital in NYC at start of 20th century, themes of medical advances, technological advances in general, disease/epidemic control; social, class, racial conflicts, immigration in NYC, belief, church insitutions, forbidden love; fascinating, nasty, hopeful, desperate.
    2) Taboo, 1 season of 10 eps so far -- early 19th ct. London, long-lost former employee of British East India Company returns transformed, mythically in-tune with his multi-ethnic and multi-continental past, to England from West Africa, to claim his inheritance of an island on American Pacific coast, as the 1812 war with the US is ending. themes are dark side and machinations of London (and the British Empire and East India Company), corruption, gangs, the misery of the poor, small clever victories of the powers that be.
    3) The Mill, 2 short seasons -- textile factory/mill in middle 19th ct. England, owners, managers, workers, reformers; industrial revolution.
    And one sci-fi show: Moonhaven, only 1 short season -- utopian multi-generational project on moon to bring its success back to polluted, warring earth, but now comes a crisis, a rift in paradise; warm, empathetic, caring, spiritual. psychological, cute quirky language

    There will not be any film of the original court case, for the reasons we are seeing in this re-creation - the Soviet Union was not about to admit any fault - this was to have been a kangaroo court, a show trial, with a foregone conclusion.

    The good news is there's a push for new reactor designs which do not have the problem of accidentally turning into a bomb. For instance, thorium reactors, at least in theory, just stop reacting rather than having a runaway nuclear reaction, and are powered by the element thorium, which is very abundant and not nearly as radioactive as uranium. Implementation of these ideas is unfortunately not in the near future; development of safe designs is difficult in the face of anti-nuclear power sentiment. That distrust of nuclear power is in part due to failures like Chernobyl and the more modern reactors at Fukushima, but also due to the US and Soviet policy to build "breeder" reactors which produced fissile materials (that is to say, materials that can produce fission reactions) for use in nuclear weapons.

      @Zakatak-mf4iq Год назад

      It should also be noted that the reactor type used in Chernobyl is extremely unusual and unlike any outside Russia. At risk of sounding too much like the show's characters, an explosion Like Chernobyl is physically impossible in modern reactors. Meltdowns sure, but even these are relatively well contained and don't release anywhere near the amount of material. Fukushima was a freak accident that the planets practically aligned for (the normal sea level literally rose from the earthquake before the tsunami), and even then it's care bears compared to Chernobyl. We should be cautious sure, and make sure that we do maintain our safety systems, but an accident like Chernobyl is really unlikely.

    There is a video on RUclips that tells the story of the building of the huge containment structure (that big domed thing) around the plant. After they cleared the roofs of the radioactive debris, they covered it temporarily with s shield but it was still leaking radiation into the environment so a bunch of nations chipped in to pay for the 2billion$ dome. The documentary was fascinating. Just search on ‘chernobyl tomb’ and it should come up. Its about 1 hr long.

      Even more, and I hate to burst your bubble, Legasov was not at the trial. The writer used him to give the central explanation. But the state really did shut him down, just not after this impassioned speech. It's great theater. It's lousy history. Sorry.
