The pretty little town sits in splendid isolation on top of a sandstone hill surrounded by miles of pancake-flat sheep pasture (Romney Marsh) whose human inhabitants were either drowned by the sea surges of the late 12th Century, or killed by the virulent Malaria epidemics of the mid 17th Century. Rye retained its railway station (on the Marshlink Line between Hastings and Ashford) because the road network in the area is so poor that a substitute public 'bus service could not be provided. During the Middle Ages the French kept sailing over and burning the place down, which is why Rye was eventually walled and gated. The town used to stand at the edge of the sea but now it's two miles from the nearest beach.

The town (sic) of Rye has changed very little over the past 250 years because it isn't really on the way to anywhere. It sits on a hill in the middle of a huge, pancake-flat reclaimed marsh now used for grazing thousands of sheep. The reason why Rye still has a railway station (on the Marshlink Line between Hastings and Ashford) is because the local road network is so poor. The medieval Mermaid Inn is well worth a visit. If I'm travelling by train between Chichester and Canterbury I break my journey at Rye so that I can call in at the Mermaid for lunch.
How very very charming! I want to know, did you go back for Jorg to get his favorite beer? Somehow the town reminds me a bit of Victoria B.C. We live in WA State in the US and the closest to England we will ever get is just over the border to Canada. You two love-birds! You seem like newlyweds all the time, wherever you go, enjoying life and special moments together.I had almost forgotten how on our visit to “little England” as newlyweds half a century ago, my husband bought a six pack of Apple Jack to take home. I have been to Rye. I bought a blue skirt there, but I gave it to my British sister- in- law. Rye is very walkable. I am sure I visited that chocolate shop! Thank you, as always, for bringing your viewers along. I loved the pink house and your teatime looked lovely! I look forward to your videos, even though I see them out of order from when you filmed them. I might see a recent one, then view one from two years ago, then see one from a year ago. But the experience is always great!
Thanks for the tour of Lamb House. I just finished reading The Master, a novel about James and the years he spent in Rye. Great book and it was fun to see the house and beautiful garden he enjoyed so much.
Oh I really enjoyed this! We were in Rye a few years ago for our son’s wedding. We stayed in a very tall old house on the Main Street. There wasn’t a straight wall or floor in the place it was so old, and there were beams and wood panelling everywhere. The legal ceremony for the wedding was at the town hall and included a town crier who was in full coat and hat, ringing his bell and announcing the marriage as he walked with the wedding party to a nearby hotel for the reception! Rye will always have a special place in our hearts x

Yes we have stayed at the Mermaid but never visited Lamb House. We have always been in Rye during the winter so perhaps it was simply closed at that time. Next time we go I will check the opening times. Kirsten, as usual you are wearing a lovely dress which suits you perfectly.
