You need to use Hydrogen Peroxide with several table spoons of salt mixed in. This will create instance rust. You should have painted the entire fender skirt with primer and paint first, then sand as much off as you like leaving some exposed primer and paint, then scratch and scuff to your liking, then apply the Peroxide letting dry between coats. Put on as many coats as you like to achieve the desired amount of rusting. Pat dry between coats. Allow to completely dry before final wipe down and top coating. Hope this helps if you even read this. Good luck! So far a great job!!
@@kalinagoedge2777 It does with quick results. Don't know if Chad has figured it out yet because it doesn't look like he is having a pod cast today. Will see?
I usually take a nail and poke 1 or 2 holes in the lip of the can, to allow the paint to drain back into the can, instead of drying in the lip groove. Makes it easier to open the cans too. Great Show, Thanks.
Nice work. I use water and wire wool to create rust patina. Put water on panel then rub wire wool between your hands over the area so it kinda sprinkles the steel wool over area. Keep up the great work guys.
BAD Chad & QUEEN Jolene, I’ve been watching your videos on a daily and I’ve gone back to the beginning and have been watching them all!!! Love everything you do and your ability to communicate what you are doing to us. Keep up the awesome work and your amazing creativity!! 👍 Skirts and Spots Bob Silverberg
I’ve been a custom painter for over thirty years, I’ve been using Vice Grip Garage Shine Juice, I used to just spray clear, I like Derek’s concoction.👍🇨🇦
Hi Chad & Jolene how are you two? You need to mix salt in with the Vinegar that is what rusts it fast. I have also seen pickle juice and salt used as well. The videos that I have watched they had it rusted pretty quickly but, I think without the salt it is not going to rust quickly and I also think the water collecting on it will dillute it. The videos that I have watched they mixed the salt and vinegar in a spray bottle and sprayed it on. When in doubt how to do something watch a You Tube video, lol.
I use vinegar to de-rust metal. I put a old two barrel shotgun in pure vinegar. It took a couple of days to de-rust it. Works great & removes all of the rust. Then steel wool & water to clean up. Rust does start “ growing “ quickly. It will be interesting to see what happens.
Black tinting is the dominate color. Always use black to darken a color and make it opaque to hide the background. Red in blue paint makes purple or violet according to the ratio. No red in the blue if you want Dark Blue. There are several dark blue colors in spray can paint that would work.
I thought the color match was really good the first time you checked. Should not have added red but I couldn't really see it on the screen. You lost it when you added more blue and never got enough black back in it. Just too light and needs a bit of black until perfect.
I always enjoy watching. You see a vision and you just make it like it's so easy. It speaks of years of experience and a serious work ethic. You have a keen eye and a deft hand. Signs of an artist at work. I must say sometimes our tastes differ, but I applaud your ability and tenacity. I would suggest to be careful about door clearance with side mounts. Suicide doors may cause a problem. I find your use of 100% penetration welding an obvious solution to panel repair work. I admire your work keep it up. A real fan. Robert Scheibel
I've never seen this done before Chad and jolene hopefully it's going to work out just how you want it to. I can't wait to see the end result and to see if it works. Keep up the great work the both of you 👏 👍
8:1 peroxide to vinegar with a tablespoon of salt, let it sit and it'll look like old rust in no time. Get a soft brass wire wheel or some sand paper, even paint thinner, whatever you'd like, to remove spots of paint where you think the sun would hit it or the water would pool up, and then you'll have a good spot to put your vinegar peroxide solution. Excited to see how this turns out.
If you use vinegar, dry it with a heat gun, then apply more vinegar and heat dry it until you get the desired effect. I have cleaned rusty metal with vinegar to dissolve rust, then clean it, then sand it clean. Vinegar is just a mild acid. Just rinse with baking soda to neutralize it and distress the painted metal with steel wool with mild scratches to make it look aged. Good luck, it's coming along nicely.
Chad for the first time you have done this style of paint I think your doing well. You can not hurt what your doing. I do think maybe a bit more black into your paint. I would not to do because I never done this so this is a fun thing to me. Chad see you and Jolene tomorrow. Oh also Jolene thank for the great job of the cover letting us see the whole job that Chad is doing. Thanks you both!
Vinegar kills rust and you should have painted it first with red oxide primer then good paint coverage then scotch brite in certain areas and sand paper until you see bare metal in the areas you want and then salt water with peroxide will instantly rust the metal 👍
HEY CHAD, Peroxide sprayed on rusts right away. Rubbing Vaseline on before you paint then wiping off afterwards you can make cool patches of rust like on the doors and fenders there. Looks great
Vice Grip Garage does patina finishes on most of his cars. Derick also sells wipe on clear coats from dull, satin, and gloss. Some are linseed based, some paint.
Hi from the uk, loving the motor looks bad ass, what ever you do to it will come out great like your past projects. Keep doing what your doing great content.
Toss Salt at it ...... But you have to be aggressive with it.... almost angry while throwing the salt to achieve the correct patina 😊 . Cars lookin good man!!!!
Some auto parts stores can mix you original color in a rattle can if you want less aggravation trying to match the rust look. Oops I mean "patina" look
Hey Chad, 16 ounces of hydrogen peroxide, 2 ounces of white vinegar and 1 tablespoon of salt In a spray bottle will give you rust immediately. Thanks again Chad and Jolene for a great show!
Some iron/steel powder will speed up the creation of rust if you wet the surface with salty water and sprinkle it on. Fine iron filings can be found at science educational supply houses. Remember sprinkling iron powder from a shaker on a piece of white paper and then bringing a magnet up from below.
Bad Chad and Jolene trying to emulate the patina and apply on to the skirts,, wow, that would be a difficult mix mediums and process, but again Bad Chad wanted to use what he had in his possession with out spending big dollars while he performs in front of thousands of viewers,,, Holy billy ba jeeeepers.. yikes! 😲He is brave. I have a hard enough time figuring out what pair of socks i want to wear,, That is why I like to watch these guys design and build with what they have at hand. Hard act to follow.😁
I never imagined fender skirts, I thought you were building a hot rod and cut open the rear wheel fenders slightly larger and put the wide tires and chrome reverse wheels. But you built it to what you wanted, give it hell! Lol. 4:32
I really like the fact that you are not afraid to try something new, not knowing what will happen. Making the new paint match the old is a challenge equal to your metal skills IMO. Good on ya!
Bare metal left unpainted for a day or two will flash off in rust (remember what happened to your tank on the fuel truck?) Check out the back of your skirts tomorrow. Hitting the face of the skirts with a heavy mist of vinegar and salt would probably turn rusty in a few hours. Or you could just drive it around Ontario for a day, and then you could hear the rust happening!
Chad vinegar alone won't cause rust it actually removes rust the best solution is hydrogen peroxide with a little vinegar and salt in a spray bottle mix about 80-20 with vinegar being 20 percent hydrogen peroxide bring the 80 add a few dashes of salt shake up , the best way to do is paint the panel as u would painting anything else then remove the paint in the spots you want to rust in a rust pattern and then spray the solution on the removed paint or bare metal can also use browns and redish paints with a brush and Dab to add texture along with nicks and small dings here and there
I have used vinegar and water 50/50 to rust metal parts. I suggest you put the paint on then use a DA with 400 grit to create "wear spots" in the paint. Notice on the back of the hood how it rusted from the edge in. and on the doors and finders where the paint looks like it was warn down and rust took over. Thry to create that look with the DA. Once you have sanded some bare metal, then put the vinegar solution on and it rusts as it dries. The DA should help make the paint look old. Also notice how the dirt on the top has discolored the paint. Perhaps put some test pain on a scrap and when it's still tacky, put a lite sprinkling of dust and see what that looks like.
Nice job Chad..I saw your Australian episode where that guy used acid/water mix to get the same result. What he did looked great and I'm sure this will look just as good...
Should've sprayed the skirt with Vinegar+Hydrogen Peroxide and Salt, and that would've rusted the metal almost immediately. Apply several coats and the patina will thicken. Then follow that up with either a paint or sealer. I like spraying with a clear sealer, which preserves the rust, so that when I paint the piece, I can follow that up with sanding the surface w/o removing the rust.
Looking awesome! I’ve had excellent results using muriatic acid (in a spray bottle) and then hydrogen peroxide (also in a spray bottle). Results are almost instantaneous. Vinegar works, but is much slower. To expose more bare metal, just sand it.
With rust patina the trick is to make it believable. Look at the rust on the car and it usually forms on flat surfaces first then then runs vertically and gathers around edges and flat surfaces because the cars been sitting for long time, where the water runs off. Not horizontally that low down. Also don't over do it, be subtle less is more. Don't worry about the paint colour once it's scotched down it will look cool.
Those front doors go a long ways forward. Could be difficult getting the tires sitting in the fenders far enough forward and low enough to clear the doors
You might paint a first coat color rust , blue on top and finally sand the blue to reach the rust color. A bit like on the front fenders . Good luck anyway, nice project😊😊
Just wanted to suggest you use the same thing as we use on the highways here in NS. Salt Brine. Guess you could just add salt to the mixture overnight. I think it would add a nice light rust patina. Anyway, anyway car looks really great with the chop and the lowered back end. thanks for video.
Once your done modifying the car take a polisher and some rubbing compound and go over the whole vehicle. It will bring out the best of the old paint and give it a uniform look but won’t destroy the rusty patina.
I remember my friend washing down his car with vinegar after painting it in order to harden up the paint. I don't know what type of paint he use but it turned out nice.
Fairly strong mix of salt water rusts pretty quick. Guys have used vinegar to get rid of rust, I have tried that and it will clean stuff up to a point.

Try putting on a coat of red oxide primer, then the blue, then scuff through the blue with a Scotch Btite pad to achieve the patina
Don’t see any other red oxide on rest of the car, look at what the factory used and study how weather and sun wore the paint.
I agree , red oxide would be good underneath also a titch of white fogged on …
Flat brown paint would work to, that's what I use on models for this effect.
Can’t wait to see the dual side mounts!!! Great choice!!!!
Nice work. I use water and wire wool to create rust patina. Put water on panel then rub wire wool between your hands over the area so it kinda sprinkles the steel wool over area. Keep up the great work guys.

I believe it's a mixture more than straight vinegar... And a small spray bottle would make it easier to apply it
Another way to rust it good is vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and table salt solution 👍🏼
I feel like it would look great with a visor . Nothing big like the original ones but a slim fitting look
Would a visor look good on the front window ?
