France has done the same thing England has been trying to emulate. The difference is they didn't lack dynamism in terms of pace out wide on both sides.
As England did, albeit down to Southgate's squad selection, but not because England didn't have these types of players at their disposal.
They simply didn't start or bring more of them & this is why France, heck even Portugal in the same negative vein of football as France & self imposed dynamic limitations as England with their squad selection.
Has been more successful at the type of football England is trying to copy and they have a World Cup & Euros respectively to show for it. Ironically Portugal outplayed France at their own game to deny them Euro 2016.
Trying to nick games solely through individual moments of brilliance isn't sustainable because it often gets caught out by the better tactical systems that don't solely rely on magic alone or being solid at the back (parking the bus) & breaking on the counter.

Sick and tired of the Kane-blaming. Yes he looked a bit laboured but he's a world-class striker. How many times did he receive a pass with his back to the goal? How many times did he drop deep looking for the ball or to help out defensively? The problem, as always, was England's lack of self-belief and midfield creativity.

Southgate did well to have Foden man-mark Rodri all the way through the 1st half but that sacrificed Foden's abilities to go forward. Spanish coach saw the problem and substituted Rodri for Zubimendi and asked his keeper to play the long ball. This effectively took out 7 England players from the game because England was set up as 343. It immediately resulted in the a goal right after the 2nd half kickoff.
Spain produced a few more chances to score using the long ball approach, which Southgate and the England players failed to deal with. Tactically, Southgate should have reverted to a back 4 to neutralize the long balls and win the 2nd balls. With Rodri out of the game, Foden should also have more freedom to attack but he continued to man-mark Zubimendi instead and continued to play according to Southgate's plan.
Southgate is a good manager to have in the dressing room, but not the best when asked to make important decisions that will dictate the game instead of reacting to opponent's tactics.

Typical shift from an England supporter. Before AND during it you would have been saying how amazing Harry Kane is. Pointing to his goals in Germany as proof.
Well this is the first time Bayern haven't won the league in 10 years. Now I've seen Harry Kane play enough times over the years to judge him fairly.
I've never seen him play any different than he did in this tournament. He strolls around the pitch contributing nothing of value and then ends up in the right position, which is good, with no one marking him, which is bad, and scores a tap in. He can also header a ball. High praise for someone rated as world class.
You don't rate a player on easy goals, I don't care how many they score. If for some unexplainable reason they score an ungodly amount of goals despite their lack of talent, then you put them on or put them on the bench.
Germany's Muller comes to mind. I heard about this player scoring a crazy amount of goals and looked forward to seeing him play. Years later I'm still waiting for him to do a single thing on the pitch worth talking about.
You are part of killing football by hyping these players up.

Nobody seems to mention about Pickford. Players were screaming for the ball and he kicks long and it comes straight back at us, tiring our players out and disrupting any rhythm. Until they recognize neither is true they will not improve. They had the luckiest and easiest road to the Final possible.

Tournament football isn't league football where you have 38 games to revise, change, improve, correct, modify, learn what to do. You simply go with what seems to be working. England got to the final, and that's what counts.
The question is, seeing the degree of cohesion of the Spanish side, could England have from the get-go imitated that approach of pressing opponent's exit, controlled possession and quick vertical attacking employing two fast gifted wingers and a good distributor from the midfield? That's not too different from ManCity approach, perhaps a little faster and more willing to lose the ball in exchange for seizing goal opportunities.
If you want that approach for all time -- not a bad choice -- make that the criteria for manager and player selection and go with it. It doesn't ensure winning, but at least it's easier to select, calibrate and train a team.

I never thought we'd win the Euros even pre tournament, our performances in friendlies since WC22 was poor, and the Nations League in 2022 was poor.

Another gem was them making fun of Mina Rizuki because she tried to claim that De Rossi and Pirlo weren't past it, and that Ireland wouldn't have an easy time against them. This was in 2012. Pirlo and De Rossi past it in 2012.

Don’t know what everybody is expecting. England don’t have the best players. They reached the final and took Spain (best team in Europe) to 86 minutes, there has to be some credit in that? But I do think it’s time for Southgate to step down to make way for a manger with a more modern take on the game.

Saka is a very good player but he doesn't get to the line and gives no service to the striker. He always cuts in and then is surrounded by three defenders.

Criticism of Bellingham is a bit harsh. He had an assist in the final and that overhead equalizer. He was much more impactful than Kane

Yes, we did have optimism after the way we played in the first half against the Dutch with three at the back but Southgate was so scared of Spain he changed the system back to one that seen us play atrociously in the previous 5 games because of THEIR wingers. When Liverpool dominated Europe in the 80s, they didn't change their system because they knew they could impose themselves on the opposition, no top team or coach does.

Southgate was too budy budy with Harry Kane, afaid of dropping him cos it would not go down well with the players, the result was an imobile England and its cost him in the end .

Hardly surprising that the football was “atrocious”.
FIRST, Southgate had England playing with only 10 men.
Kane was clearly not fit, went missing upfront, crowded out the number 10 position with Bellingham and Foden.
SECOND, England abandoned the left side of the field as an attacking base. Anthony Gordon should’ve started on the left in every game; and if Southgate didn’t really fancy him then he should have taken one of the players who, in the past, had performed reasonably well for England on the left in Grealish, Sterling, Rashford or Sancho.
It is difficult to think of any other manager in world football with that array of talent available to him on the left that would not have played one of them as a mainstay on the left, and who would have gone into an important international tournament without a single FIT left back in a 26-man squad.
Such stupidity deservedly ended with England losing a final they had a tremendous chance of winning had the right tactics been deployed and players selected.

It was far from one of the worst tournaments ever. In fact, whenever neither England or Scotland were playing, it was mostly great.

The only reason they were in the final was a last minute winner from Bellingham. But for that, England would have gone out having scored 2 goals in 4 games. That, along with the fact they had the best attacking talent in the tournament would have been a disgrace.

Southgate didn't "achieve" all that....the PLAYERS did and would have gone further in the competitions with a competent manager, maybe even win them.

Many many congrats to Spain, they were the far better team not only today but throughout the tournament. How we only lost 2-1 I have no idea. But the nicest statement that I saw in the comments today was that football won. The negative mentality that England has I am afraid the day they win a tournament Euro or the world cup, it will be in the 22nd century !!!😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
