‘The football was atrocious’ | RTÉ panel discuss England’s tactical approach at Euro 2024

- Didi Hamann, Shay Given and Richie Sadlier discuss Gareth Southgate’s tactical approach at Euro 2024 and whether he was overly loyal to underperforming stars such as Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane
The Spanish team played magnificent football. England were extremely lucky to even be in the final. The best team won. A pleasure to watch the Spanish.
Richie's analysis of Southgate's persistence in playing Bellingham and Kane despite their lack of form is spot on.
I can understand dropping Kane because of his obvious injury but Bellingham was on the left side and I knew we were doomed when I saw our shape.
Bellingham was the best player yesterday lol
France has done the same thing England has been trying to emulate. The difference is they didn't lack dynamism in terms of pace out wide on both sides.
As England did, albeit down to Southgate's squad selection, but not because England didn't have these types of players at their disposal.
They simply didn't start or bring more of them & this is why France, heck even Portugal in the same negative vein of football as France & self imposed dynamic limitations as England with their squad selection.
Has been more successful at the type of football England is trying to copy and they have a World Cup & Euros respectively to show for it. Ironically Portugal outplayed France at their own game to deny them Euro 2016.
Trying to nick games solely through individual moments of brilliance isn't sustainable because it often gets caught out by the better tactical systems that don't solely rely on magic alone or being solid at the back (parking the bus) & breaking on the counter.
@@mk22vids37 we was all terrible last night including jude.
Hes stats are 2 goals in 7 games against minnows with 1 assist, he ran a total of 65km only 2km more than kane 63km who apparently didn't move all tournament. 🤷🏻
Richie was talking out of his arsehole at half time telling us how incredible england are playing! how the are frustrating spain making them make mistakes yadayada. Then full time and they do a 180 and slate england yada yada. Like WTF do we need these clowns and their horseshite opinions that change at the drop of a hat.

Good lad Didi !!
Southgate didn’t have the courage to make the big decision and bench Kane. Everyone knew what was going to happen.
Bingo sir, thats easily 60 percent of the reason England lost. Kane was an excellent player, so was I at an amateur level, I could run for 90 minutes and more, but that was 42 years ago. Now if I run its to get to the toilet on time !!!
Sick and tired of the Kane-blaming. Yes he looked a bit laboured but he's a world-class striker. How many times did he receive a pass with his back to the goal? How many times did he drop deep looking for the ball or to help out defensively? The problem, as always, was England's lack of self-belief and midfield creativity.
he's an actual idiot. He had 6 games to change the line up. Foden and Kane have not shown up. This was the easiest decision to make.
If you look at the last final we were in, it wasn't happening for Italy. What did their manager do? Took off their talisman player, made a smart substitution and influenced the game positively. Southgate was never brave enough to make the big call, and when he did, it was never early enough. Respect for sorting out the mess he inherited, but he's taken England as far as he can.
@@Retrostar619wrong. These players are playing in quality teams with quality coaching. Southgate and his team are nowhere near that standard.
Picking Kane had to be blind loyalty. Englands journey to the final was far too easy.
Exactly, he was a total waste of space for 60 minutes.
England would have done better with Watkins, who was barely used for the entire tournament.
Southgate not using Gordon's pace was diabolical.
Palmer was England's best player after coming on.
For a route to the final that was far too easy lets just say they made extremley hard work of it lol😂!!

Southgate is too conservative. He brings subs on but only leaves them 10 to 15 minutes. Kane has looked slow and past it. Getting the ball way too deep and no threat.
Yeah. Actually even if hé wanted to play the defensive card' shoudve bring Joe Gomez and play 5 at the back. Plus add a midfielder, let Ollie and Palmer upfront and wait to go on additional periods
Thought he'd start Toney or Watkins
Kane has been like this for years. It worked okay with sterling running through on passes from Kane , but now with a stronger midfield Kane dropping into midfield doesn’t work
Southgate is PE teacher, he's doesn't want to win, he just want to make his player happy, Kane, Bellingham, Foden, Saka, are big names, but they simply cannot play together, the idea is not to squeezed everyone in, the idea should be forming a winning team, that's basic tactics, and Southgate clearly didn't even know that.
As an Englishman I wish I had watched this channel , these are the best comments by pundits so far.
They can comment from the outside and give refreshing comments, I like Gary Neville etc.. but it feels like they aren't allowed to tell the truth.
This was very refreshing.
Agreed completely
I feel like Neville starting out telling the truth but then someone had a word with him. Weird huh? I expect Neville cares far more about his TV hours and his £££/hr on TV that he compromised easily
You should've seen the previous RTÉ panel that they had since the 90s but recently got rid of/retired - John Giles, Eamonn Dunphy and Liam Brady. Old men bring honesty. Now across all channels all pundits are 30/40 something that will only say what benefits themselves professionally in the future.
Yeah as someone else said the old panel was superb. You would have loved it. You got the best more interesting football analysis I've ever seen, with nothing else coming close, and it was funny.

@@user-gh8is1up9m do you have any links mate ? I’ll have a watch
Southgate has overstayed his welcome, and now it's time to go. He's tactically inept with his boring snooze fest football. These wonderful players deserve a better coach to help them win tournaments. Southgate is simply not good enough and needs to go.
Southgate did a good job in the Finale. The critique is not deserved. Hamann would do better to sometimes shut up. The team is simply not better. Some players are highly overrated.
@@matahari1576 How can you say he did a good job when he picked Harry Kane who ran less than my grandma the past 5 games? That mistake along with many others says he didn't do a good job.
Unfortunately what will likely now happen is England without Southgate will play prettier football but progress not as far.
I can't totally explain why but that's my prediction.
Hope I'm wrong
You could let Southgate manage a team with the top 11 players in the tournament and they would still,be as inept as England are.The guy is like a web browser with 11 pages open,9 are frozen and he doesn’t know who’s playing the music.
Southgate did well to have Foden man-mark Rodri all the way through the 1st half but that sacrificed Foden's abilities to go forward. Spanish coach saw the problem and substituted Rodri for Zubimendi and asked his keeper to play the long ball. This effectively took out 7 England players from the game because England was set up as 343. It immediately resulted in the a goal right after the 2nd half kickoff.
Spain produced a few more chances to score using the long ball approach, which Southgate and the England players failed to deal with. Tactically, Southgate should have reverted to a back 4 to neutralize the long balls and win the 2nd balls. With Rodri out of the game, Foden should also have more freedom to attack but he continued to man-mark Zubimendi instead and continued to play according to Southgate's plan.
Southgate is a good manager to have in the dressing room, but not the best when asked to make important decisions that will dictate the game instead of reacting to opponent's tactics.
Refreshing to hear the Irish being honest about Southgate. Wish the UK media could be as open an honest about him and his approach.
Spain has over 63% possession of the ball , double goal scoring chance in the game - England the second best team in the final for sure
they would not have made the final if they had been in the other side of the draw.
Southgate has had easy routes to the final he has managed and every time he meets a good team he loses
Southgate is incredibly lucky to have reached 2 finals and 1 WCup semi-final.

Southgate wouldn't be hired to manage any EPL team, so why England?
England has been playing atrocious football for decades. There is something deeply wrong with English football media and community. They always overestimate their players, who look much better than they actually are in the leagues playing next to actual worldclass players from other nations, but then show their true colours when playing for the national team.
12 years ago Theo Walcott was the "England's Messi". 6 years ago Dele Alli was the "England's Messi". Look where they are now. This is a common theme I have noticed with English media "wunderkinds".
Nailed it. Low expectations are your friend English football.
Remember when Steven Gerrard compared Joe Cole to Messi ?
This is the prime example of English hype.
@keepitsecret-dl1pr Yes, certainly overestimated. The manager (like all English managers) is hopeless, but they're only good when surrounded by 9 foreigners and a foreign coach.
This "coming home" garbage we hear is nonsensical, given true football is rarely, if ever, played by England.
Lol. The pundits on MOTD with Gary Lineker and his cohorts.
England have two world class players. Kane and Bellingham. Two that soon will be world class. Foden and Saka. One consistently good Dm in Rice. And a good Dm pairing in Guehi and Stones. I would add Trent to the list of world class players but I dont know why he has not been playing more for Southgate. Thought he was as good as Mainoo as a midfielder in the euroes too and would have only gotten better as the tournament went on.
For Pickford, Shaw, Trippier, Walker this should be the end. Add Maguire to that list.
Honestly as an English fan I clearly saw that Harry Kane is totally past it, he is no longer a first class player, though he was one of the best. He has to now realize that its time to retire. Sadly and it does make me very sad to say this, Gareth Southgate has to go as well, sadly he did not win any trophies, we need a more aggressive manager. Well done Spain, they were the better team and they were hungrier. My late dad used to say, if u dont score u will concede.
Typical shift from an England supporter. Before AND during it you would have been saying how amazing Harry Kane is. Pointing to his goals in Germany as proof.
Well this is the first time Bayern haven't won the league in 10 years. Now I've seen Harry Kane play enough times over the years to judge him fairly.
I've never seen him play any different than he did in this tournament. He strolls around the pitch contributing nothing of value and then ends up in the right position, which is good, with no one marking him, which is bad, and scores a tap in. He can also header a ball. High praise for someone rated as world class.
You don't rate a player on easy goals, I don't care how many they score. If for some unexplainable reason they score an ungodly amount of goals despite their lack of talent, then you put them on or put them on the bench.
Germany's Muller comes to mind. I heard about this player scoring a crazy amount of goals and looked forward to seeing him play. Years later I'm still waiting for him to do a single thing on the pitch worth talking about.
You are part of killing football by hyping these players up.
England's players look great when they are surrounded by world-class foreign players at their clubs, but when surrounded by other English players, they are terrible.

Nobody seems to mention about Pickford. Players were screaming for the ball and he kicks long and it comes straight back at us, tiring our players out and disrupting any rhythm. They do have the players. It’s all about combinations and having a tactically astute manager. England were never going to have the ball against Spain, so they needed to be direct with pace out wide. Should have dropped Kane and Bellingham. Played Watkins, Foden in the 10 or Palmer. Then Eze or Gordon wide.
Rice is a headless chicken no game iq only thing he does good is defending and he's no better that the German dm
If you have Harry Kane as your number 9 its pretty important imo that you have at least one of your two wingers play that inside forward type role that Son played at Spurs for years. Rashford a perfect fit in that position for tournament football despite form , even if you dont go Rashford at least have Gordon play that role and get in behind defences .

The arrogance of the English media was and still is hilarious. They think the Premier League was sent here by God to show the highest level of football or that their players are superior to any other country. Until they recognize neither is true they will not improve. They had the luckiest and easiest road to the Final possible.
Fact is Rodri, Nico Williams, Lamine Yamal and we can go on and on are just better players than what England can offer. They also obviously work better as a team, they have chemistry and they scored 15 goals in 7 games. I say football won today!

Tournament football isn't league football where you have 38 games to revise, change, improve, correct, modify, learn what to do. You simply go with what seems to be working. England got to the final, and that's what counts.
The question is, seeing the degree of cohesion of the Spanish side, could England have from the get-go imitated that approach of pressing opponent's exit, controlled possession and quick vertical attacking employing two fast gifted wingers and a good distributor from the midfield? That's not too different from ManCity approach, perhaps a little faster and more willing to lose the ball in exchange for seizing goal opportunities.
If you want that approach for all time -- not a bad choice -- make that the criteria for manager and player selection and go with it. It doesn't ensure winning, but at least it's easier to select, calibrate and train a team.
Ultimately what counts is winning the damn finals.
Typical English mentality.

They have bigged them up these last few seasons to be at a level that they just aren't at and they got found out against well drilled sides.
I never thought we'd win the Euros even pre tournament, our performances in friendlies since WC22 was poor, and the Nations League in 2022 was poor.
Then the likes of Rice and Kane come out in the tournament and have a pop back at the smallest bit of criticism. Absolute babies, they've been pandered to all season and put on a pedestal by the likes of Neville and co all season, suck it up - you were poor.

The thing is, when the subs came on they were brilliant, saved Southgate and the next game he just reverts back to the ineffective line up and we wait to conceed. Reactive management not proactive. That's not somebody who should be in charge of world class talent.
Every clip I see of Rio Ferdinand online, he is creaming his pants over Jude Bellingham. These players are so overhyped and over rated by the media it is unreal, Harry Kane included.
Why is Ferdinand even employed as a pundit. He's a disgusting individual. I remember his on-pitch remark a few years back when England got knocked out of a tournament, he flashed a smile and said: well, I'm off to the beach now. He didn't give a f**k. There was all that business with the drugs test too. And he cheated on his wife when she was dying.
I regularly watch the Bundesliga and whenever I have seen Dani Olmo play he has been the best player on the pitch. When RB Leipzig beat Bayern 3-0, he scored all three goals.
In contrast, Bellingham was great against average teams, but average against great teams.
But somehow Bellingham is a superstar and Olmo is a reserve for Spain. Maybe England players aren't as great as their hype.
Aye, indeed. This hype has been a recurring theme for such a long time. How many 'golden generations' have there been? Put these players together....and it's been underwhelming for decades. The hype, over-expectation and generally awful media pundits (with a few exceptions) makes sure that the same things happen over and over and over again. Jude was the only player actually trying everything on the pitch. He was relegated to a left wing to accommodate Foden. Foden offered nothing in attacking and his positioning in midfield is in par with McTominay. Foden and Harry Kane caused the team.
Lot of people don't get it, playing Kane was not the problem, the problem was he set the team too deep to play defensive, Kane needs the ball in the box or he won't score. Everyone is saying there is something wrong with Kane, look at England's world cup, the only time Kane got the ball was through free kicks and corners, very few from open play. Why? Southgate was afraid to play open attacking football and he has been doing this for years, but because they won the games (poorly) no one stood up and called a spade a spade. The man was totally incompetent and the FA people that hired him have to go, not just Southgate.

How is this squad of players not preforming like they do at their clubs!?
No style of play or patterns after 8 years in charge its borderline negligence, I have no idea what he’s done every time he’s seen them for the past 8 years, getting paid for nothing
Playing Kane every game was an insult to professional footballers worldwide.
Southgate only made 3 subs in this final...sums it up really. Spain cut through our defence like it was butter and could have scored more.
Listen to didi hamman he speaks the ultimate truth absolutely spot on far to negative
I can see why they are frustrated. Before Southgate, England were winning trophies right left and centre. Then Southgate came along and ruined it all.
What do you mean??? England have won one trophy, the World Cup in 1966
@@jasonparker346 I’m being sarcastic…
@@ezeee595 Sorry, my bad, I didn’t catch onto that. Maybe I’m still a bit sozzled, yeah that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it😂
Should have been
Watkins, gordon, bellingham, saka, mainoo/palmer, rice, 4 backs.
For people talking about the quality of Irish pundits vs UK pundits: I've seen Irish pundits say that they had a real shot of winning 2002 World Cup if Keane and Mccarthy didn't fall out. Can you imagine Ronaldinho etc getting together and talking about their win, saying "thank God the Irish imploded!" I don't think so.
Another gem was them making fun of Mina Rizuki because she tried to claim that De Rossi and Pirlo weren't past it, and that Ireland wouldn't have an easy time against them. This was in 2012. Pirlo and De Rossi past it in 2012.
Basically, pundits of most countries are insane when talking about their own country. And, let's face it, most pundits are just pretty thick in general.
Looks like you took those comments serious when Irish people know the pundits are having a laugh. Allso Ireland played every well with out Roy Keane in 2002 world cup tournament.
It was not just the big name players that should have been rested. There was no imagination in the game plan. There was no mid-fielder who could hold the ball under pressure. There was no-one willing to run at the defense and cause them to turn. Palmer clearly needed more time on the pitch. Jordan Pickford was excellent,
glad to see the RTE on the RUclips covering the euro finals. could not watch the English coverage. too bias to the English. really enjoyed the comments of Didi Hamann - very good assessing teams - wouldn't be a fan of the Irish football commentary but that's just a view and subjective.
not seeing England play their best players was ridiculous. I reckon England just might be very good. not at the moment with Southgate. hope he goes quick. ( English fan)
This is what I call the Joe Hart disease, we're so used to hearing "great stop from England’s no1" week after week that English fans are gaslighted into just believing they've the best keeper etc until Pep or someone comes along. Man Utd would pay 80million+ for nearly every player in that England squad, how many would Real Madrid take for the same price?
Finally some opinions I can agree with, more or less.
But there is still no addressing the underlying reason why England always do this. Even when Southgate changes it all up.
Attitude.
Don’t know what everybody is expecting. England don’t have the best players. They reached the final and took Spain (best team in Europe) to 86 minutes, there has to be some credit in that? But I do think it’s time for Southgate to step down to make way for a manger with a more modern take on the game.
Saka is a very good player but he doesn't get to the line and gives no service to the striker. He always cuts in and then is surrounded by three defenders.
Criticism of Bellingham is a bit harsh. He had an assist in the final and that overhead equalizer. He was much more impactful than Kane
Kane wasnt able 🤣😂
Yes, we did have optimism after the way we played in the first half against the Dutch with three at the back but Southgate was so scared of Spain he changed the system back to one that seen us play atrociously in the previous 5 games because of THEIR wingers. When Liverpool dominated Europe in the 80s, they didn't change their system because they knew they could impose themselves on the opposition, no top team or coach does.
Southgate was too budy budy with Harry Kane, afaid of dropping him cos it would not go down well with the players, the result was an imobile England and its cost him in the end .
I agree with these guys but I do wonder what they really think the Ireland football team. Hopeless !!! I😂😂😂
Hardly surprising that the football was “atrocious”.
FIRST, Southgate had England playing with only 10 men.
Kane was clearly not fit, went missing upfront, crowded out the number 10 position with Bellingham and Foden.
SECOND, England abandoned the left side of the field as an attacking base. Anthony Gordon should’ve started on the left in every game; and if Southgate didn’t really fancy him then he should have taken one of the players who, in the past, had performed reasonably well for England on the left in Grealish, Sterling, Rashford or Sancho.
It is difficult to think of any other manager in world football with that array of talent available to him on the left that would not have played one of them as a mainstay on the left, and who would have gone into an important international tournament without a single FIT left back in a 26-man squad.
Such stupidity deservedly ended with England losing a final they had a tremendous chance of winning had the right tactics been deployed and players selected.
Great analysis. from an England fan 👏
Yes hamman tells it like it is
One of the worst tournaments ever but the best team won. England were awful from start to finish
It was far from one of the worst tournaments ever. In fact, whenever neither England or Scotland were playing, it was mostly great.
Watching SAFEgate's management style is like watching an Audley Harrison fight 😴🫠✊💦💦
Surely not as bad as AudleyHarrison.😂
The only reason they were in the final was a last minute winner from Bellingham. But for that, England would have gone out having scored 2 goals in 4 games. That, along with the fact they had the best attacking talent in the tournament would have been a disgrace.
No vindication, he has favourites. Lucky to get to the final🤥
2 finals in a row
Semi final world cup
Southgate achieved more than all england managers excpet 1966 and 1990 combined
Southgate didn't "achieve" all that....the PLAYERS did and would have gone further in the competitions with a competent manager, maybe even win them.
Bellingham is the biggest DIVER in that English team and that's saying something 😂😂😂!!!. Kane's finished!!!.
Many many congrats to Spain, they were the far better team not only today but throughout the tournament. How we only lost 2-1 I have no idea. But the nicest statement that I saw in the comments today was that football won. The negative mentality that England has I am afraid the day they win a tournament Euro or the world cup, it will be in the 22nd century !!!😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
england need a manager who can get the best out of our top players
Guardiola!
😊Bring back Giles and Brady.
