Like 2 years have passed between DS1 and DS2. But the scientists working on him kept him in stasis. So from Isaac's POV he's only been conscious for like a week since the Ishimura. Because every time he would come out he'd get asked a couple questions, get traumatized because the marker is slowly killing him, then get put right back in the stasis pod. It's why the suits are more advanced in DS2. Years have passed but it's just been one shitty week for Isaac. That's Gordon Freeman levels of fucked right there.

Technically you should also count that the markers give him literal mixed signals, because the first marker tried to appease to Isaac by fooling him with the images of his lover, the second one goes balls to the wall and tries to submit Isaac by force, which is quite ironic

Also, if you think about it: Kenda Daniels was actually doing the right thing in the original game. The argument can also be made that Isaac was the 'villain' of the original Dead Space too. Kendra's mission was "We're taking this Marker and burying all knowledge about it, so that something like this can never happen again." Meanwhile, Isaac's goal of bringing the Marker back to the planet was exactly what the Marker wanted. Being brought back to the planet was part of the Marker's nefarious goals, even though Isaac didn't realize it would have bad consequences. Isaac was tricked by the Marker into thinking reuniting the Marker with the planet would be a good thing.
So yeah. Even though Kendra was a cold-blooded, back-stabbing person, Earth Gov's objective was actually the right thing. They wanted to destroy Aegis 7 and the Ishimura, destroy all knowledge and information regarding the Marker, and make sure that nobody can ever stumble upon the Marker again. Earth Gov is NOT a good organization; but they were trying to prevent the Marker from achieving it's goals. Meanwhile, Isaac was helping the Marker (even though he didn't realize it).

The Remake makes this even more clear with the other ship that came to the Ishimura's rescue. The personnel on board that ship were armed to the teeth with weapons, combat suits, and nuclear bombs. They were ready to kill and destroy, and they probably would have succeeded if they hadn't let that escape pod dock onto their ship. Makes me wonder if maybe Kendra had actually sent a signal to them earlier to wipe out the ship and the planet, but then everything got all out of control and she wasn't able to warn the kill squad about how bad the situation had gotten before it was too late.

not totally on topic but what drives me mad about Dead Space 3 is - one very easy fix to the problems in the narrative while still letting you have co-op (I mean you shouldn't have co-op but if you HAVE to) would be making Ellie the Co-Op character instead of Carver. The entire narrative completely changes if you remove Carver entirely and put Ellie in his place, having her drive the plot forward alongside Isaac as opposed to just bouncing her around as a plot device.

    • @KevinHelpUs

Right?! Totally agree. And we wouldn't have had to co-op with some rando that was just introduced, let them work out their relationship problems as the game progresses. Let me play as Ellie. I want a character who can lose an eye and barely be inconvenienced.

A common symptom of dementia is, wouldn't you know it, aggression. So him going on a rampage as opposed to surviving may be due to marker influence more than a personality change. About the plot, the game always had a very strong and mature direction, truly NFG from babies crying to questionable UV. I was waiting for in-game footage blowing my mind, showing Isaac killing people thinking its necromorph but it was more complex than that.

It's very hard to make a sequel scarier than the original game because, unless you have a graphical upgrade like Silent Hill 1 have to Silent Hilll 2, even then you have to rely on genious design. I think only Resident Evil 2 got away with that when the whole game happened in a police station, one of the safest places for most people.

So I first played Dead Space 2 when I was 14 and it became one of my favorite games ever. Now I'm 26 and Isaac's emotional beats hit harder than ever for me. His guilt over not saving Nicole mirrors my own guilt over my grandfather's passing. He was in treatment for lung cancer but opted for in home care. The night he passed he had fallen and I helped him back to his makeshift bed because he couldn't get into his regular bed. After I helped him I played some games and went to bed. I woke up to screaming. He passed at some point in the night and I couldn't stop blaming myself for not doing more, not sitting in his room and calling 911 when his heart stopped. It took years of therapy to finally break myself from this thought process. But I was traumatized, I suffered nightmares, depression, and flashbacks. So seeing Isaac's guilt, seeing him lie to himself it's really affecting now. His care for Ellie also resonates with me more now that I am married. Him screaming "I'll be there" means so much to me now. If it were someone I care about I'd halo jump a station to save them. It's crazy how a little time and life makes one connect with a story more than before.

Thanks to Dead Space Mobile (which is considered lore) The initial outbreak started by a woman only going by the name of "vandal" with the help of a man named "Tyler". Tyler manipulated vandal to sabotage primary functions connecting to the mining sector which held the infestation back from the residential districts of the Sprawl. 1:50 I think it did so well, especially when you play them back to back, because the gameplay loop in DS2 feels like it's assuming the player JUST played DS1. The game feels a little faster, you have more control of Isaac, but after the first few sequences, the enemies and environment have been ramped up to adjust for your buffs.
I feel like in DS2, even if it's more action focused, the horror elements are elevated because the game makes you feel smaller, like a mosquito; you may feel more free but one wrong move and you're done.

His actions do a stellar job of encapsulating the mind of someone that just doesn't want to do *this* anymore. Whatever *this* is. This struggle, this pain, this life. I just feel it paints a fairly deep picture of him without having to spell it out.

The series had always been part of my top favorites but playing them again as a dude in his mid 20s and not someone who's 12 really contextualizes the script HARD and only cemented itself as one of the all-time greatest games ever made.

Unitology because they kept praising the marker even though the marker created monsters and killed people, and the government because they knew how dangerous the marker was, and continued to experiment with it, even though it was uncontainable. Issac gets caught in the crossfire because he was a survivor, if EarthGov never tried to resurface the marker, or if the CEC never got greedy and mined on Aegis VII then the marker would never be uncovered.

      1. They knew about the markers
      2. They made up the story of Altman and indirectly spawned unitology with Altman as the prophet
      3. In DS2 towards marker activation the general sgt dude says
      "It wasn't supposed to happen"
      "Then how?"
"WE HAD IT UNDER CONTROL BUT NEVER EXPECTED THIS MANY PEOPLE".
They almost 100% knew what would happen and that convergence would happen. But on a small scale seems like it wasn't a threat and not enough to make a brother moon.
      4. In DS1 they wanna get the marker back to earth meaning they would've used it to make another Aegis 7 experiment since they already knew how to make markers. Just wanted to recycle it.
They suppress info have people mysteriously not alive themselves and know about the markers probably EVERYTHING!!!
Unitology is just a brainwashed side effect. The people go insane and would've anyhow with or without the religion from marker's influence.
Unitologists were the earth gov downfall. They became too fanatical and grew too large. Coupled with the wipes from every marker event seems like DS3 unitologists took over the villain role.
Issac isn't a villain more a pawn in everything. Especially marker's influence.

Isaazc is flying away after a job well done, he turns to the seat next to him, and he sees none other than Ellie. Someone who cared. Someone who went against his plans only with the intent to save him. Not a jump scare, not someone who's dead and is only being used as a puppet to further use him. He's taken the final step towards redemption. He's earned a real ending. Being saved by someone who doesn't care that he *could* have ended everything, only that he didn't.

Isaac's mind was the purest and the Noontech Diagnostic was required for the sacrifice to be completely ready. The blueprints within the Noontech Diagnostic machine was the gathering of all blueprints used to make it and Isaac was the best recipient for this as his mind was the one most attuned to it. Isaac surviving with his grit and being spared by Nicole was on purpose until the end, if the Marker needed him dead it needed him dead as its maker to complete Convergence. And it needed him at the center of its influence to just off himself right inside the Marker's "dead space".

    I'd say no.
The unitologist's and Second Marker were the antagonists. Isaac was being used to create markers without being aware of it ever since he was found floating in space after DS1. The marker weaponized past trauma as a means of influencing Isaac but his own willpower and experience within the Ishimura allowed him to bypass his visions of Nicole since he knew she was dead but didn't truly wish to accept it which is why he kept seeing her. The marker capitalized on that specifically since it was the only way for it to get to Isaac's deeper emotions.
Dismembering people and killing infected babies and kids didn't stop Isaac so the marker intended on using his destroyed love as a probe.

You noticed how they snuck in Ellie wearing the suit as well when saving Isaac at the end? I think they teased her being a playable or main character

I didn’t, but I wish they would! There was another commenter that said she should have been your co-op partner for Dead Space 3, and I 100% agree.

DS3 ruined her character entirely. Which idk why they didn't give them all suits and instead have like half the team wearing casual start trek styled clothing. It's zero G in space and they all wore casual clothing.
Saving grace would've been DS4 where in a Q&A devs said Ellie would've been the main character saving people survivors on earth.
But yeah instead we got Carver and a semi decent bromance of 2 messed up dudes who see eye to eye in the end and fulfill the mission.

I absolutely loved Dead Space, and part two was amazing. I felt more dread and horror in Dead Space much like you would experience in an unknown environment and fear would be the main factor in your mind. In part 2, it was the fantasy that most people would imagine as the “what if” if they were placed in such a situation. Part two was the all the horror of the first game but Isaac was a evolved character set to take on the enemy, a lot like how someone watching a movie would react differently than the character being viewed

I remember playing dead space 1 when i was 13. Then much later i endend up in a 3 years long toxic relationship with its ups and downs, breakups and comebacks. And i remember automatically picking dead space 1 again, playing it again and again, then downloading the 2,i remember being so attached to this character as i was trying to let go of all that happened. I felt abused but also guilty because i was being guilt tripped constantly, i felt like i was just a puppet to others and that i could never find someone able to love me for who i am. I ended up having bad coping mechanisms, while trying to stay sane and together also by playing these games. They wete cathartic to me, they were a way to rationalize and take distance from all the pain i lived, knowing that isaac has had it rough too and i wasn't alone. My life has been way better now and I've found peace, but it was hard and damn, having a videogame able to make me live past experiences better, able to make me reflect on my past mistakes and shit , is something rare and absolutely unique. This is not a book, this is not a movie, this is a videogame. And it's absolutely gorgeous. Hope it wasn't too depressing and cringe to read but i wanted to just say how much i love this masterpiece, that also helped me a lot somehow :) the 3 was all right, ew. Like i like it just for the cosmic horror vibes. The rest is just not fitting.

I remember beating DS2 for the first time and seeing the Dead Space 2 title at the end. I was like this it it was a good run, Isaac. Then Ellie showed up and that moment I felt like I had to live. Crazy how a game does that. I mean live as in be Isaac in that moment.

I remember I watched the end of Dead Space 2 first before the first game. At first I was thinking “Did Isaac realize that she’s like a villain that’ll cause the events of the third game or something?” Not knowing anything else about the series. Now that I’ve seen the end of the first then saw the second, i can tell it really didn’t mean much at all, but I do I get what they’re referencing now.
