I have been asking for a video tutorial about how to get 2k on my 5d mark iii using magic lantern since last year and I can't tell you how HAPPY I AM to see someone finally made the video. Dude you are freaking AWESOME!!
+Cameron Scott MAAAAAN! This is mind blowing!! You just gave me an idea that I can use my Canon 650d with ultra-wide lenses and getting 1080p!!!! Man you amazing!!
Thanks for the walk thru, my only concern is shooting for long periods of time. I read that it starts a new movie file automatically and that you loose about a second or so, is this true? If I'm using an external audio recorder for my shotgun mic, my concern it loosing audio sync. Any suggestions?
The "K" stand for the number of pixels in the frame width my friend!! 1920x1080 is considered 2k (cuz its close enough almost 2,000px width) ..anything over 2048 is considered higher than 2k.
I don't see the raw recording module in my magic lantern menu. are you using the magic lantern build that works with the canon 2.0.3 firmware or the one for the 2.0.6 firmware?
2496 x 1048 or so is what your had your resolution set at and you can get 10-15 seconds at this rez? when you pressed 5x crop in live view the image was very zoomed in but when you played it back it was wider. i don`t understand. i thought crop mode ment it recorded a zoomed in image as in only the center of the sensor. another workds if you used a 50mm on normal in crop mode it would act as if it was at least a 200mm in angle of view. also can you record higher frame rate with the 7d ? 60fps at lower raw resolution?
I'm surprised that you are not using MagicLantern exposure guides and do it in Canon firmware instead. That's where Magic Lantern shines, with zebras, false colour and all that.
Good video. I'm still not a fan of the image being cropped even more on a crop sensor camera. How can you shoot a short film in RAW in a small room? For example if you shooting a bedroom scene in small room? I was excited about shooting RAW on my 7D but having to crop even more seriously killed my hope.
I learned to work around it, sure it won't give you a wide angle view of a room but you have all the other benefits of raw. If you are considering using this feature for something more than just an added bonus to having a 7d I would say get a 5d instead because there is more functionality. Also maybe don't shoot 2k as you can shoot 1080p raw instead of 5x crop. The biggest challenge is framing anyway and I wouldn't feel comfortable guessing where the edges of my frame are on a shoot. Remember the 7d is running ML as a hack and it has exceeded expectations already, any features not included by Canon were left out for a reason.
Cameron Scott I'm still new at this and you're video was the best one I ran into on RUclips in regards to shooting 2K or higher. No one else went into detail as far as setting up the aspect ratio like you did. Anyways, I was thinking of shooting in 1728x972 (16:9) RAW or 1728x1036 (5:3) when i change the aspect ratio and maybe try to scale it as close as possible to 1920x1080p in post. Since it's recorded in RAW I might be able to get away with it with a little bit of sharpen, etc. That's the best way i can think of to get 1080p RAW without having to shoot in crop mode. I'll experiment with it and let you know how it goes. Sounds like good idea but i won't know until I actually try it out.
Hi. Question! When I try to film in raw, the image change to b&w and then when I try to shoot, the video is almost bad, with rare cuts Is it for the camera's temperature? It shows me 45º or 50º. Mi CF card is 60 Mb/s Thanks!
change live view by pressing the info button, you can't record with the magic lantern info on screen. Just frame your shot and switch views, this will prevent pink frames and recording problems.
Hey thanks for the video, can you please tell how did you get the option of Bitrate (CBR) in movie mode ML, i get Load H264,ini option which ends at a error "cant find h264.ini" please help, thanks
I'm confused as to why and how putting the camera into 5x crop gives you 2k. I see that it works, but isn't 5x crop just an image magnification to use for manual focusing? Not sure how the two are related. Any ideas?
Canon 7D with magiclantern crop mode, is it possible to get correct framing during recording? If correct framing is possible, can you do a tutorial or give a hint of how to do it?
You can use the view mode which displays proper framing by pressing the info button, I believe it turns black and white but you will get an accurate frame. For everything in crop mode I usually just shoot for the edge or middle of the screen and assume I will get enough extra left and right space in 2k mode. I’d highly recommend using regular raw mode for almost 1080 and scaling it up the 11%, you get plenty of record time and an image that looks better while maintaining live view and framing.
Hi! This is good result! Maybe you found the way to control the full image? In crop mode I cant control right and left side of my frame, because focus on center
Cameron Scott i now. ML have benchmark test inside, that allows to know read/write speed. Example my 6d with Sandisk E[treme 45mbps is show 41-42mbps. 7d must be faster...
it becomes 5x the lenses you use and you can use live view but not with ml display full shot, best to frame the shot then switch to regular view with info button, the display which won't show you the full view though.
+Cameron Scott so basically you can`t view crop mode on the lcd while recording? so panning the camera , or tracking a moving object on a glidecam would be out of the question right?
I have a x1066 32 gb lexar, but when i try to record the video has a lot of color and image bug, like when the tv has not the signal..can you hep me please?
Mine are converted into .RAW or .MRX, can't do anything with them and really would love for some advice on what to do to edit them into premiere. Still hate that I can only record up to 10-11 sec.
I've been thinking of going for the ML hack, but decided it's too limiting and too much of a fuss for such a limiting use. Better to save up and go for a purpose built camera like one from BMD.
Since this video was from last year you may no longer have this camera but can you tell me what was the highest bit rate in non-2k mode in either 24p or 60p you could shoot video at and what was the maximum time allowed. Thanks
Just under 1728x982 resolution, 23.976fps in raw video mode it can do 66mbps constant recording no limit for file size but it will split them. Tested up to 5 minutes of recording time on a 1066x Lexar pro card
Thank you so much for your time in responding. It is quite a feat it can do unlimited raw under the settings you described. Do you have merge those split files with a third party software program, and do you still use the camera.
+Lima Junior what model card are you using? I recommend the LEXAR PRO Cards due to issues experienced when using slower cards. These cards are rated at 155mb/s
when the file size hits 4 gigs it will stop. The T3i doesn't support exfat iirc, so you are kinda stuck, but can probably work around it with editing choices.
+Lee Lounsbury I think because they are actually possible, but for fps override time lapses. Like 7 fps or 1 fps. Very useful for low light. Hope this helps.
when i was shooting 16:9 at 1728 i was getting 11 seconds out of it, changing to this resolution limited me to 3 seconds, did i miss anything or would it be my cf card? it's a 16gb 120mb/s
I would recommend the 5d mark iii as it will be a better camera overall and have more functionality with magic lantern see this chart dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4124919/bleeding-edge/raw/raw-chart.png again remember it is a dslr and not a video camera so there are still rolling shutter problems.
+Ryan Weir No, because a 6D doesn't take a CF card which is needed for their speed to record high res Raw. the 6D can record a lower resolution Raw video
+Yung Sandwich one simple search didn't tell you two things obviously. 1. UHS 2 and 3 Sd cards have more pins that allow for the faster transfer. The 6D is not compatible with that card 2. The 6D has a max write incapable which is too low and the card would be up to the task, sure, but now the cameras the problem Try not calling someone a moron when you don't know what you're talking about
Cameron Scott thought i bricked my Canon camera yesterday trying to put on the latest magic lantern nightly build. I managed to fix it and downgrade to the previous version... still, it's bye bye Canon. They've been behind the curve for too long now. Sony is the way forward. i'm going to get the a7s II. 4K with in-body image stabilization is the way to go.
I don't get the point of shooting like this.. you can only shoot 15 seconds and you have to keep the magnification to x5.. how can you frame your shot like that?
Just shows what the camera is capable of, you can frame your shot with the camera in the ml info mode, it shows a full shot even if you are in crop mode.
Hey Cameron, could I ask you a couple questions about using the Magic Lantern through email? If so, please let me know and I can send you my email address. Thanks so much! - Evan
I have been asking for a video tutorial about how to get 2k on my 5d mark iii using magic lantern since last year and I can't tell you how HAPPY I AM to see someone finally made the video. Dude you are freaking AWESOME!!
Does it record continueles
For Live View, do not use ML view features like focus peaking, use the standard canon view or you will have limited recording time and image issues.
+Cameron Scott MAAAAAN! This is mind blowing!!
You just gave me an idea that I can use my Canon 650d with ultra-wide lenses and getting 1080p!!!!
Man you amazing!!
+Cameron Scott For now I unfortunately can`t get Sony, so this is a great option!!!
Hi Cameron, thanks for the vid! Is it possible to work with my canon 700d in 1080p and 60p?
I only have experience with the 7d and ML sorry
Thanks for the walk thru, my only concern is shooting for long periods of time. I read that it starts a new movie file automatically and that you loose about a second or so, is this true? If I'm using an external audio recorder for my shotgun mic, my concern it loosing audio sync. Any suggestions?
Awesome, thanks so much for this! I didnt know crop mode actually allows more than what you see in the 5x zoom-in mode!
The "K" stand for the number of pixels in the frame width my friend!! 1920x1080 is considered 2k (cuz its close enough almost 2,000px width) ..anything over 2048 is considered higher than 2k.
Thanks for clearing that up crop mode really produces 2.5k or around that.
I will endure the vocal fry for this knowledge. Dear lord show the recorder and speak up. Lol thank you for this.
I don't see the raw recording module in my magic lantern menu. are you using the magic lantern build that works with the canon 2.0.3 firmware or the one for the 2.0.6 firmware?
This is 2.0.3 from a 2017 nightly version
2496 x 1048 or so is what your had your resolution set at and you can get 10-15 seconds at this rez? when you pressed 5x crop in live view the image was very zoomed in but when you played it back it was wider. i don`t understand. i thought crop mode ment it recorded a zoomed in image as in only the center of the sensor. another workds if you used a 50mm on normal in crop mode it would act as if it was at least a 200mm in angle of view. also can you record higher frame rate with the 7d ? 60fps at lower raw resolution?
I can get 7 to 11 seconds 2496x1440
can you please do a tutorial on timelapse settings. using the deflicker settings...
I have a couple other projects in line but I will do my best.
Thank you :-)
Put Magic Lantern on my 7D I can not see the Raw option in the movie settings or Resolution etc! Any ideas why?
you have to enable the raw modules and reboot
How do you do that haha!
luckly I understood that by myself...
go in Config and choose Startup mode (movie), reboot and you wil have the same menu now :)
I'm surprised that you are not using MagicLantern exposure guides and do it in Canon firmware instead. That's where Magic Lantern shines, with zebras, false colour and all that.
Hi, good video. Can i install magic lantern on 7d mark ii? Thank
Good video. I'm still not a fan of the image being cropped even more on a crop sensor camera. How can you shoot a short film in RAW in a small room? Footage looks fine at 1728x972 just scale it up 11% to 1080 in post.
What update we need on 7D for this Tuto ?? And what update magic lantern ?
📌Hi! Is there the possibility of using Magic-Lantern also on a Canon 7D Mark II ? I didn't find it in the list of supported cameras🤔
It's not supported due to the software and processor being different I believe.
Hi. Question!
When I try to film in raw, the image change to b&w and then when I try to shoot, the video is almost bad, with rare cuts
Is it for the camera's temperature? It shows me 45º or 50º. Mi CF card is 60 Mb/s
Thanks!
change live view by pressing the info button, you can't record with the magic lantern info on screen. Just frame your shot and switch views, this will prevent pink frames and recording problems.
+Cameron Scott So Fast! I fixed it, Thank you very much, You're the best!
Is it impossible without the 5x plus crop?? What about camera movements?
Would the same pixel count / format work on Canon 700D or the speed of the card would make it slower / smaller format of raw video?
That's for the video! I tried last night but it displayed "Starting....". After like 10 minutes of that I gave up. Is that a common issue?
Jonny Havens check the forums, you might need to reinstall something
Does recording audio in the camera use up video processing power and buffer?
Hey thanks for the video, can you please tell how did you get the option of Bitrate (CBR) in movie mode ML, i get Load H264,ini option which ends at a error "cant find h264.ini" please help, thanks
I'm confused as to why and how putting the camera into 5x crop gives you 2k. I see that it works, but isn't 5x crop just an image magnification to use for manual focusing? Not sure how the two are related. Any ideas?
To use exact sensor size. Anyway if you turning global draw on only you'll have a preview of what the take will render with x5.
Canon 7D with magiclantern crop mode, is it possible to get correct framing during recording? If correct framing is possible, can you do a tutorial or give a hint of how to do it?

Hi! This is good result! Maybe you found the way to control the full image? In crop mode I cant control right and left side of my frame, because focus on center
JUST to FILM NOW You can navigate with the joystick but focusing will still need to be done with the box and af button.
Hi. Nice vid. What about max record speed in 7d? What benchmark test in ML says? Near 80-90mbps?
Денис Киндрук Data rate constantly changes while you are recording, when the buffer fills you get the recording automagically stopped error
Cameron Scott i now. ML have benchmark test inside, that allows to know read/write speed. Example my 6d with Sandisk E[treme 45mbps is show 41-42mbps. 7d must be faster...
so how does lenses work in crop mode? if i use a 28mm it becomes like a 105mm in terms of angle of view? can you monitor crop mode while recording?
it becomes 5x the lenses you use and you can use live view but not with ml display full shot, best to frame the shot then switch to regular view with info button, the display which won't show you the full view though.
+Cameron Scott so basically you can`t view crop mode on the lcd while recording? so panning the camera , or tracking a moving object on a glidecam would be out of the question right?
+cinefoto bahia you can see a cropped version on the screen still, as long as your subject is in the middle of the frame you should be Ok.
I have a x1066 32 gb lexar, but when i try to record the video has a lot of color and image bug, like when the tv has not the signal..can you hep me please?
Nothing i have done it, but the record is only 6 second
i have same prob. have you found a solution?
I notice here that you are using .9 bitrate. if this necessary/do you notice a bitrate difference?
Mine are converted into .RAW or .MRX, can't do anything with them and really would love for some advice on what to do to edit them into premiere. Still hate that I can only record up to 10-11 sec.
My 7D sometimes can do 45 sec shots at 1080 , but most of the time I cut at 30sec
You need to change a slow SD card with a faster one.
I've been thinking of going for the ML hack, but decided it's too limiting and too much of a fuss for such a limiting use. Better to save up and go for a purpose built camera like one from BMD.
Avidcomp You still retain all functionality of the stock camera so you don't have anything to lose.
Larry Johnstone you do have to use a third party program to convert and merge the files. I am still using the camera as it keeps impressing me.
Ok thanks.
What version of Magic Lantern do you have on your 7D? Thank you in advance!
Nightly.2014Oct08.7D203
this doesn't work on my 5Dm3 can you tip me how should I do it? also I tried this but avery time I press Rec It doesn't fix the parameters.
5dm3 has a different ML build so options will be different. Look to the Magic Lantern forums for help.
15 seconds? Is there anyway to record 2k RAW longer?
+WhiteTrashWino thats because buffer got full, it need to save all the content of the buffer in order to record again. thats the hardware limit
+WhiteTrashWino No, use lower quality for longer video.
Hello, my cf card is a SanDisk 32gb 90mb/s, my 7D stops with ML camera gray icon "prepare". Can you help me?
+Lima Junior what model card are you using? I recommend the LEXAR PRO Cards due to issues experienced when using slower cards. These cards are rated at 155mb/s
Thanks for this video , but when i'm in crop mode , my liveview is black/white -bad resolution-low FPS ; Do you know why ?
Are you in 5x or 10x?
Cameron Scott I finally found out why it was not working , i've shut all the option (peaking, zebra etc..) And it's perfectly working now !
Great! That would make sense, the camera can't handle all that at the same time.
Hi! do you know ho much time would you be able to continuous record without interrupting below 1080P? Thanks!
In my canon 7d with magic lantern can't turn on the raw rec mo option, you can share me a link to download the magic lantern that you download please
magic lantern site has downloads, just select your camera www.magiclantern.fm/
Under 1080 raw you get about 7 min? What if I shot exactly 1080 raw?
Due to the scaling in raw mode I don't think you can record exactly 1080. It still splits the file into 4gb pieces.
I install nightly built the latest version for Canon t3i and now the camera only records for 1 min and 18 sec. how do I get it to record longer?
+7SERIESfilm change the data rate? What is your video file size?
when the file size hits 4 gigs it will stop. The T3i doesn't support exfat iirc, so you are kinda stuck, but can probably work around it with editing choices.
Why are higher resolutions shown in the ML menu if they are unusable?
they are shown and might be able to record for a frame but not continuously this is just a hack remember
+Lee Lounsbury I think because they are actually possible, but for fps override time lapses. Like 7 fps or 1 fps. Very useful for low light. Hope this helps.
Hey i am only able to record upto 14 seconds. i am on 64gb 120mb/s cf card. What if i want to do continuous shooting? in 1080p? any fix?
renzart are you using crop mode at 5x zoom? that limits recording time. Use fps override and don't use zoom.
Thanks Cameron Scott for replying. what should be the fps override settings for raw video ( MLV) 1920x1080 ?
renzart I use 23.976
Hey Cameron, The problem was with my card. i changed it to Lexar 1066x 64gb card. And it is working perfectly in 1080p.
Thanks.
Thanks for sharing, God bless you!
how high can you get the FPS at 1080p on the canon 7d?
+Ky Fisher (kyborgFTW) I haven't tried over 24fps for raw footage.
With magic lantern, will I be able to shoot 1080p at 60fps?
DefyTheNormies Not for any period of time that would be worth using.
How to set 4k with the Canon 5d mark iii please answer me .......people from TANZANIA my friend.
I can only shoot for 3 seconds. Is it my card or camera setting?
what are your settings? is fps override set to 23?
Yes, my fps override is set to 23. I have a cf card that is 8gb 400x.
how about the 1080p raw how long will it let me shoot on the 7d?
thnx
NeoGeneticPage I have tried 1080p with fps override and it will shoot continuously in 5x crop, 4gb file size limit though.
ok thnx man will look into it
when i was shooting 16:9 at 1728 i was getting 11 seconds out of it, changing to this resolution limited me to 3 seconds, did i miss anything or would it be my cf card? it's a 16gb 120mb/s
fps override on 23?
yep 23.976 with actual 23.976
+Dennis Nguyen 5x crop mode?
yep it wont let me record otherwise, might make a video soon to show you - thanks for the help by the way you are great!
+Dennis Nguyen it shouldn't be 16:9 with 5x if you have that ratio that is the problem if not then the card is.
There is no update for Mark 2 :(
Sadly no
How many seconds you getting shooting 1K Raw?
So far the only limit is my card size or the 4gb file limit but it will just break the file into two then.
Cameron Scott Ok Thanks For That, Last Question. If I Buy A Canon 5D Mark III Now, Would I Be Able To Hack It With Still With Magic Lantern?
I would recommend the 5d mark iii as it will be a better camera overall and have more functionality with magic lantern see this chart dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4124919/bleeding-edge/raw/raw-chart.png again remember it is a dslr and not a video camera so there are still rolling shutter problems.
It is like after you take this magiclantern from the camera
Is this the same as eos 7d?
What SD card has updated to your one?
this is a cf card camera
Does this work on CANON 7D Mk II ??? thx.
Jaroslav Kuchárik I only use the 7d firmware, not familiar with the mkII but it would be a different firmware version of ML in order to run.
Thanks for your video.
whats the file size on average per 15 secs?
BIIIIIIIIIG9 Just under 4gb usually so you can get about 7min on a 32gb card
Is it possible to get 1080p at 59fps using this hack?
natbarron not with this camera
Thank you!! :)
Is it true 2k or is it 2k simulated?
True, not scalled.
did i hit a raw nerve
11 Seconds?
yes, this is not clear? hardware limits, this is not an official firmware and this camera
thank u
this is 7D right?
THC GAMING as it says 7d
My question is, will this work on a 6D?
+Ryan Weir No, because a 6D doesn't take a CF card which is needed for their speed to record high res Raw. the 6D can record a lower resolution Raw video
Don't listen to the moron above...
Just make sure you get a fast SD card.
Dude. you need a 1000x CF card to record that. Please show me a 1000x SD card
UnratedAwesomeness www.mymemory.co.uk/SDXC/Lexar/Lexar-64GB-Lexar-Professional-1000x-SD-(SDXC)-Card-UHS-II-U3---150MB_s
One simple search.
+Yung Sandwich one simple search didn't tell you two things obviously.
1. UHS 2 and 3 Sd cards have more pins that allow for the faster transfer. The 6D is not compatible with that card
2. The 6D has a max write incapable which is too low and the card would be up to the task, sure, but now the cameras the problem
Try not calling someone a moron when you don't know what you're talking about
Nc
:)) it is 2.35
Yep: Western movies aspect ratio - Sergio Leone's "The good, the bad and the ugly".
Just get panasonic G7 costs 600$ with lens and will get quadruple better video than this camera.
try on low light, i have that and noise is just too much, cant beat a bigger sensor
i dont shoot secret porno videos :) as almost 90% of people-makes video in pretty decent lightning conditions :)
*people who cant afford real cameras buy micro 4/3
Tomas Av. Better video but immage wise G7 sucks compared to the 7D. I prefer Lumix FZ1000 for videos and photos compared to G7.
This just looks totally confusing...
I'm ditching my Canon to go for Sony. playing tiddly winks just to get 15 seconds of 2K when 4K is standard on Sony.
Me too, I was hoping for better 4k options but Canon hasn't really delivered.
+Wayne Carter I'd go A7r ii for the still resolution bh has $200 gift card when you buy it.
I am using a c100 mk 2 right now and although I love it, it would be nice to have the 4k option for some of my government work.
does it work with 7d mark ii ?
I don't believe they currently have a 7d ii build, here is the best resource for info www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?board=34.0
I didn't understand a shit of the final part (the actual recording) dsfbdgsfbv
I don't get the point of shooting like this.. you can only shoot 15 seconds and you have to keep the magnification to x5.. how can you frame your shot like that?
Just shows what the camera is capable of, you can frame your shot with the camera in the ml info mode, it shows a full shot even if you are in crop mode.
2496x1044 isn't 2k ...
Closest you can get with this camera is 2496x1200
+Cameron Scott for 4k which number can set to my camera 5D mark iii
Yes it is.
Hey Cameron, could I ask you a couple questions about using the Magic Lantern through email? If so, please let me know and I can send you my email address. Thanks so much! - Evan
Sure
man!! come on!!! what you think you can do with a 15 sec video!!! it's too!!!!! short!!
prince obeni same question to you ! Really worry about that.
15 seconds is better suited for documenting events, by the time you say rolling you have 10 seconds left.
not for dialogues, speech, etc.
can be used for documentary highlights, even highlights.. all that stuff
Quality stock footage is what I am currently using it for, works great.
prince obeni It'll be more than adequate to shoot the next Jason Bourne movie.
Slowww slowww work
Wald Bob it is tedious
An absolute pointless exercise for a miserable 15 seconds or less.
