It's a test for both of them really, they can get a handle on where they are with their skill set. I think Shawn was gassed here, listen to him talk, that's a significant oxygen deficit. I think that made him slip or it was sweat on the floor and made him look more like he was swinging for the fences. This was probably a slightly humbling experience for Shawn.

Alex wasn't wearing headgear and they were both going the same speed and intensity. Matching what you're partner is doing is what's supposed to happen. MMA fighters can get winded and go to the ground and eat time. Boxers have to stay in their feet and burn oxygen moving around for 12 rounds and if they hit the wall they will get knocked out. Taking the fight to the ground to survive the round is not an option.

Hard sparring is detrimental to the careers of fighters because they accumulate a lot of unnecessary brain damage over time. It's not about them agreeing to fight.
