I just bought this today and so far have been very impressed. I can live without the rear camera but the lack of landscape support is the only thing that bothers me the most. Great review. Liked and subscribed.
Good review. Few things: -One of the strengths of Android is the fact that anything software-based that you don't like can be fixed by software (I didn't like the keyboard, got Thumb Keyboard and now I'm happy) or a custom ROM/rooting (which is guaranteed to be super-easy because it's a Nexus!) -I got one where the glass is actually coming off on the left side. Ordered a replacement from Google, but they make you authorize $199 on your credit card until they get your old one back. No big deal.
Going to order mine later today! Cant wait to get it! My only negative on this tablet is no hdmi but for the price and what im getting i cant complain much!
A full days use from heavy usage? I'm glad I bought my Nexus 7, now I'm patiently waiting for it to come in the mail, can't wait to get my hands on it!
in the beginning he says the construction of it isn't that good, but a fine group of people did a drop test comparison with the ipad 3 and the nexus 7. the ipads screen cracked every time where as the nexus 7 did not. however, the back side of the nexus 7 did get a little scratched, but a case for it isn't that much.
But the original reason for there ever being SD card expansion support is because it was meant to bring down the cost of the device and let the consumer decide how big or small their storage needed to be. This also makes it easier to manage files, only having to worry about 1 storage location in stead of 2. And having 1 high capacity internal storage makes updates easier, though OEM's can always have both, but then again 1 storage location is simpler than 2.
I can't find it in the settings. The home screen only shows up on portrait so when I'm reading email in landscape and go back to home, it returns to portrait.
it's a folder with chrome in it, behind the first logo there are other icons only smaller, and it has a black circle at the very back as the background.
Great video. One of the better reviewers out there today. Debating on whether or not to get the Galaxy Note II or this Nexus 7... HMMM decisions decisions lol
Everyone's comment made sense..except yours. Where do you see me bashing the iPad? I love my iPad and it's my primary tablet. I only have a Nexus 7 because I wanted to have an Android device straight from Google. Your comment would apply more to the guy I responded to than me.
hey I got a question. with the google nexus is there free apps and with the android system do i have to get a data package? i am wanting a tablet where i can take pics video mudic and books all in one devisecan you please let me know thanks
Hey, reading is pretty good on this device especially indoor reading. outdoor reading i would recommend you get some shade to see the screen better. and regards to books you can pick either google books which has a good collection or download the kindle app for free which has an amazing collection of books.
No one seems to be able to answer my question. Do I go out tomorrow and buy a Nexus 7, or wait for the rumoured iPad mini. The disadvantage to the Nexus - no iCloud sync (I've got everything Apple) but the Nexus is less likely to break, or be stolen - and has better maps/voice assistance. But iPad would be able to sync with iCloud, work with itunes and everything easily and will most likely be thinner, but be easy to break, and more likely to be stolen. Thoughts?
The launcher doesn't rotate without root and changing one line of code...Google decided that you would hold the tablet in portrait mode when navigating the homescreens
I got question about wifi what about the wifi does it run on a data plan that you have to buy so you can use any body's internet or do is there another way of the wifi?
Nexus also has a cloud system and you can transfer your songs from iTunes (i have an iPhone too). It takes up to 20.000 songs (!). I suggest you buy one, as I am going to do when it will become available in Greece. Though I really really love Apple, I prefer Nexus :)
You can actually use the fromt camera for pictures. The only problem is that theres no icon for it.Im not advertising but,I saw an app on google play that can activate nexus 7's camera :)
Do your research: In 2003 Hewlett Packard released the HP TC1100 which had nearly the same specs as the iPad. 7 years prior to your beloved piece of Apple Tech.
Have to explain? 1. Nexus 7 have the best OS. 2. You don't have to be dependent of specific formats. 3. Google Play have more free apps. 4. You can customize the interface easily. 5. And most important, Nexus 7 will cost less than iPad Mini no doubt.
I assumed it was more because a 7" tablet isn't designed to hold many films etc. Just enough for say weekend trip. And also, the cloud service is great - but I don't understand how you can use it successfully on a tablet as portable as the Nexus 7, without 3G. It would've been great. Admittedly, more expensive...but more useful.
No (recent) nexus device has internal memory. That's Google's ideal model. One reason is to use their cloud services and it also has something to do with how the OS operates with apps (widgets won't start if on sd card).
Okay so I am looking to replace some of devises I own they are a camera, Zune, and Kindle do you know any good tablets that are under $300 that I can use? Please let me know
Okay what is Amazon Prime any way? And thanks I think I am going to wait till march because my tech teacher told me that if I wait till like march the Ipad 2 would be cheaper and there would be newer tablets out by next year. So I am really thinking my hardest on the Ipad 2 and with the Ipad 2 I can use it to get photos videos and music off of any computer like my HP Laptop I own.
Budget isn't an issue, no. But it's the ruggability of the Nexus I like, I have an iPad 2, but I'd hate to drop it, it'd break instantly. I also really like how you can stream bought movies to it, instead of downloading them. Although, they ought to bring purchasing movies to the UK soon!
I prefer this first-gen Nexus 7 more than the 2nd-gen. I love the original's back rubber texture, Tegra 3 reliability and the sufficient 4325mAh battery.
If they only released this with all the upcoming 10 perks or the upcoming 10 w/the 7 dimensions. Anything larger than 7 should just be consider a mini laptop that can't be put in the pocket and quickly whipped out like a smart phone. The smart phones are slightly under sized whereas the pads are slightly over, which would leave 7 just about perfect. Also a wifi hands-free bullet camera mountable on a headband, bicycle etc. plugin would be great to record video footage on the fly.
that's completely up to your preference, of course only if budget is not an issue because a hypothetical ipad mini would probably be quite a bit pricier : / (i don't see why a google nexus seven would be less likely to be stolen though o.O)
ur 100% right except that ipad mini actually has 512 mb of ram, so its half the memory size of nexus 7. and the resolution is lower than the nexus 7. nexus 7 has 1280x800, while ipad mini has 1024x768. nexus has higher res and pixel desnity, meaning sharper display and better text viewing. nexus 7 has 216 ppi, while ipad mini has 162 ppi
- Android (Google Inc.) - 104.8 million units, 68.1 percent share (46.9 percent a year earlier) - iOS (Apple Inc.’s iPhone) - 26.0 million units, 16.9 percent share (18.8 percent a year earlier) - BlackBerry (Research in Motion Ltd.) - 7.4 million units, 4.8 percent share (11.5 percent a year earlier) - Symbian (mostly used by Nokia Corp.) - 6.8 million units, 4.4 percent share (16.9 percent a year earlier) - Windows (Microsoft Corp.) - 5.4 million units, 3.5 percent
Jay Cole if you want an SD card slot go with the Acer a 110 is spected the same as the nexus quad core DDR memory price 209 on amazon best buy will price match
What sucks is that the 3G version is only available at the Play Store, and the freaking Play Store is not available in all countries! It's also not sold locally, what were they thinking of?
Correct just look up OTG cable. And last I hear you can buy a $2 application in the market place so you no longer have to root the device, but I'd google it to find out further information
In case anyone is wanting to buy this in the UK, pc world are currently selling the 16gb model for £170 which is a good £30 cheaper than other online and in store retailers. Just reserved mine online and going to pick it up in store today.
True, I can't argue with you there. From both an aesthetic viewpoint and also remembering everything you own through the appstore and itunes, getting a mini makes sense if you're already a part of Apples ecosystem. And really, unless you run into a really immature person out and about, it doesn't matter which you get anymore. It's easier to stay with one system once you choose it. I don't need to add the ipad mini to my collection of gadgets, but I don't buy everything apple releases either.
1: You can't select wallpapers properly, they have to be fitted on the exact dimensions. When you get a notification, your screen doesn't light up, unless you install a third party app. If you're a newbie to tech and you have a knack for clicking on things, you'll need an anti-virus software. Play Store is not organized, at all. Lacks tablet specific apps. 2: You do have to depend on specific formats for some things. 3, 4 & 5: That is true. Decision should be based on the user, by the user.
I just bought this today and so far have been very impressed. I can live without the rear camera but the lack of landscape support is the only thing that bothers me the most. Great review. Liked and subscribed.

I've watched a decent amount of reviews on this product. Yours was the best. Thanks.
That's the lighting sensor. It measures the ambient light to adjust the display brightness when it's set to auto adjust.
in the beginning he says the construction of it isn't that good, but a fine group of people did a drop test comparison with the ipad 3 and the nexus 7. the ipads screen cracked every time where as the nexus 7 did not. however, the back side of the nexus 7 did get a little scratched, but a case for it isn't that much.
This is hands down the best tablet I've ever used. The speed is unmatched and the screen is amazing. You definitely can't go wrong with this.
@kartana yes it is. Things like that are as dependant on the 'pixels per inch', as they are the resolution. These screens are top quality.
Wow, what a great, thorough review. Thanks John, I learned a lot since I bought mine two days ago.
Actually, in the new update for the Nexus they added the functionality. The unlock melon talked about is the lock for apps not the home screen.
But the original reason for there ever being SD card expansion support is because it was meant to bring down the cost of the device and let the consumer decide how big or small their storage needed to be.
This also makes it easier to manage files, only having to worry about 1 storage location in stead of 2.

yes. there are alot of rumors now a days about the 3G version of Nexus 7 and the 32 GB model too.
I've ordered it, coming in 2 days. Can't wait!
I can't find it in the settings. The home screen only shows up on portrait so when I'm reading email in landscape and go back to home, it returns to portrait.
Yeah, I want to buy it, but it's not available here in Sweden. God damn, I hate that we get everything last here. :(
it's a folder with chrome in it, behind the first logo there are other icons only smaller, and it has a black circle at the very back as the background.
Great video. One of the better reviewers out there today. Debating on whether or not to get the Galaxy Note II or this Nexus 7... HMMM decisions decisions lol
I'm getting mine next Monday! Can't wait.
i just bought the 32gb with 3g model and i am loving it, you have my recommendation any time! :)
i wish more people shared your views :(
its almost like a sprots team. its about what you are brought up with, and it can be hard to change
ordering one of these very soon
Great review. Mines just been shipped last night so will arrive soon!
Exactly. Wish more people people were reasonable like you. It's crazy how worked up people get over technology.
Everyone's comment made sense..except yours.
Where do you see me bashing the iPad? I love my iPad and it's my primary tablet. I only have a Nexus 7 because I wanted to have an Android device straight from Google.
Your comment would apply more to the guy I responded to than me.
I watched every single review, unboxing, and it for beginners. I need one now!!!!!!
hey I got a question. with the google nexus is there free apps and with the android system do i have to get a data package? i am wanting a tablet where i can take pics video mudic and books all in one devisecan you please let me know thanks

It does have a camera, just not a REAR-facing camera. The camera is on the front, facing you when you look at the screen. : )
Nice review!! I see you are wearing a Seiko diver, or am I wrong? :P
The launcher doesn't rotate without root and changing one line of code...Google decided that you would hold the tablet in portrait mode when navigating the homescreens
I got question about wifi what about the wifi does it run on a data plan that you have to buy so you can use any body's internet or do is there another way of the wifi?
I love it!
Will it be introduce in Thailand or Asia?
It does support landscape... you need to go to the right hand side of your drop down Tray and unlock it
nice thorough review. you have earned another subscriber!
You are able to rotate the screen! Just pull down the notification bar and click the lock button thingy.
Nexus also has a cloud system and you can transfer your songs from iTunes (i have an iPhone too). It takes up to 20.000 songs (!). I suggest you buy one, as I am going to do when it will become available in Greece. Though I really really love Apple, I prefer Nexus :)
Oh I see. For consolation you can just hook any flash drive and/or external HD up to it, so its not too bad
@HelgaStudios Nexus 7 is an android tablet
I am! I got the 32gb model! Now I'm just waiting till Christmas to open it!
Have to explain?
1. Nexus 7 have the best OS.
2. You don't have to be dependent of specific formats.
3. Google Play have more free apps.
4. You can customize the interface easily.
5. And most important, Nexus 7 will cost less than iPad Mini no doubt.
where can i acces my library like yours? Can't find the free movie transformers...the movie app
One thing I was wondering, does it have pen support? Because I think I'd use it for highlighting and writing notes during school
Watching thus with Nexus 7 as well and love this tab!
it does? where can you get the 32 GB version?
I put a custom Launcher like ADW so it can swivel into landscape when I'm using the home screen.
I would like to know if it is possible to switch between input languages on keyboard rapidly or not. Did you try it?
Great review. The Amazon Kindle, Nook and the rumored iPad Mini have been assasinated by this tablet.
You can make the menu landscape
In the settings. Don't worry I missed it to!
And think again for the potential of all the powerful ultrabooks in this price range!
Its on purpose, its really nice when you hold it in landscape
No (recent) nexus device has internal memory. That's Google's ideal model. One reason is to use their cloud services and it also has something to do with how the OS operates with apps (widgets won't start if on sd card).
Do you recommend it? I'm thinking to buy one.
okay is this good to carry around like a big ipod touch ?
Okay so I am looking to replace some of devises I own they are a camera, Zune, and Kindle do you know any good tablets that are under $300 that I can use? Please let me know
you can turn it into landscape. You have to have auto rotate enabled
Okay what is Amazon Prime any way? So I am really thinking my hardest on the Ipad 2 and with the Ipad 2 I can use it to get photos videos and music off of any computer like my HP Laptop I own.
Oh and, can you tether this through the iPhone? I heard there is issues, using wifi & bluetooh tethering with iPhone?
I have to ask why you're using a 10 inch (Or ANY) tablet to take pictures?
I would go for the nexus 7. What will probably happen is the ipad mini will have similar hardware but cost four times the price.
The only thing I want more is expandable storage. There's only one camera, but that makes sense because who would take pictures with a Tablet?
Budget isn't an issue, no. But it's the ruggability of the Nexus I like, I have an iPad 2, but I'd hate to drop it, it'd break instantly. I also really like how you can stream bought movies to it, instead of downloading them. Although, they ought to bring purchasing movies to the UK soon!
if you already have a google play account do the songs and videos transfer onto the device?
Excellent review, very informative and has aided my decision making over the Nexus or Kindle Fire HD. Thank you.
I prefer this first-gen Nexus 7 more than the 2nd-gen. I love the original's back rubber texture, Tegra 3 reliability and the sufficient 4325mAh battery.

there is landscape support its in the options
John hows the screen temp on yours....My whites are way more warm then cool.
that's completely up to your preference, of course only if budget is not an issue because a hypothetical ipad mini would probably be quite a bit pricier : / (i don't see why a google nexus seven would be less likely to be stolen though o.O)
i have a question. Google nexus 7 has a 32GB with mobile data version. Does it support phone call also?
Hey when I want buy something how would I buy it? with credit or a gift card?
ur 100% right except that ipad mini actually has 512 mb of ram, so its half the memory size of nexus 7. and the resolution is lower than the nexus 7. nexus 7 has 1280x800, while ipad mini has 1024x768. nexus has higher res and pixel desnity, meaning sharper display and better text viewing. nexus 7 has 216 ppi, while ipad mini has 162 ppi
Nice, detailed review. I'm definitely going to get this tablet.
You're a really good reviewer. All the other videos reviews i've seen on this product seemed very amateur
actually id does swivel into landscape mode on the home screen, you just need to un-lock the screen to do it ^-^
hey jhooooooon B which is the best tablet?
Phonearena there is no camera app with the nexus 7?
did google do an update or something? on my uncle's nexus 7 you can switch the homescreen to landscape
Your screen seems to be slightly lifted from one side. Can you confirm that?
Actually Mr ExoFreak the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 3g model is a phone as well. Yep, a 10 inch phone - I love it, nothing better!
- Android (Google Inc.) - 104.8 million units, 68.1 percent share (46.9 percent a year earlier)
- iOS (Apple Inc.’s iPhone) - 26.0 million units, 16.9 percent share (18.8 percent a year earlier)
- BlackBerry (Research in Motion Ltd.) - 7.4 million units, 4.8 percent share (11.5 percent a year earlier)
- Symbian (mostly used by Nokia Corp.) - 6.8 million units, 4.4 percent share (16.9 percent a year earlier)
- Windows (Microsoft Corp.) - 5.4 million units, 3.5 percent
actually there is a firmware update from google that fixes the screen rotation issue it was released a couple weeks ago no need for a third party app
can you use a mini usb flash drive as extra memory ? and access it just as easily as internal memory or what ?
the Nexus 7 does rotate on the home screen. you just have to change it in the settings. vote up so people can see.
Jay Cole if you want an SD card slot go with the Acer a 110 is spected the same as the nexus quad core DDR memory price 209 on amazon best buy will price match

Depends upon his/her iPad3 version (could be 64GB Wifi-4G combo)
Got my nexus 7 today pretty happy
They updated it. It wasn't available at the time of launch :)

Great review. This has slide to my number 1 choice , really wish it had a sd card slot but what can ya do right.
between the samsung tab 3 and the google nexus which one is the best?
1: You can't select wallpapers properly, they have to be fitted on the exact dimensions. When you get a notification, your screen doesn't light up, unless you install a third party app. If you're a newbie to tech and you have a knack for clicking on things, you'll need an anti-virus software.
