Wow, no SD slot? Seriously? Unbelievable. What were they thinking?! Oh I know, it'll, perhaps, be in the NEXT Nexus 7... Still, great, great price. As always, great review Michael.
The front camera can be used with an app from the play store to take self portraits or videos + Google talk you can video chat other android users, if you need to speak to someone using iOS then you can use Skype , or tango.
Great review. I'm undecided between the iPad3 or this Nexus 7 when it comes out in The Netherlands, but I'm leaning toward the Nexus now. The grid view seems a bit boring, after five years.
one of the main reasons the sd card wasn't added was because it would have boosted the price "taking a guess here 50$" when you could just root it and get a app that lets you connect a usb to it with a OTG cable. and what OTG cable cost less than 5$ and a usb witch a lot of people have. and there you have more memory for way less.
They need to fit a micro SD card slot, simply adding that would provide a lot more space at a very low cost and make it much more versitile as a hand held pc.
I get your point. BTW, Do you have any idea how much the 8gb nexus7 will cost here? I heard it will be something around RM1.1k which is too expensive considering it is only USD199.
Can't wait for Chameleon but it is not to be released until First week of August, Right when I get my Nexus 7!! Kickstarter rocks, follow the updates on there!
I am planning to buy one, but I would like to get some feedback regarding "project butter". Did it make the scrolling smoother? Actually smooth transition is the only thing I like about apple...and nothing more.
Yeah I think that fixes the that issue! Its an awesome tablet and I am getting one. I think next Nexus should have expandable memory, HDMI, and maybe another camera and that should make the experience perfect, yet!
i have a few question and i don't know much of the android interface. 1. what type of video format does the nexus 7 play? and if possible .MKV files to be precise. if possible app available. 2. Does the Nexus 7 have any note taking abilities for class lectures, willing to buy app if offered. 3. is the processor strong enough for videos that require a lot of memory? need help and i am considering to buy the nexus Please reply and thank you
It's quite simple to install flash on nexus 7. You just need to download it outside the google play and install it. And use only flash-supporting browsers such as Firefox.
I like this tablet but three observations. 1. As an iPad user it functions very much like an iPad. 2. Google now seems to operate much like Siri unless im mistaken but this review doesn't really dive too much into its functionality. 3. No flash support, well I have gone without flash for sometime, but if it had flash support that would have sold me as the difference maker between the iPad and this device.
I'm not to bummed about the lack of SD slot. I had the galaxy tab 2 and bought a 32 gig sd card and I used almost none of it. ICS removed being able to install apps to the card so basically its only for media. I use google music and if I pin songs there is no way to save them to the SD unless you manually move them. So basically my SD card was useless without jumping through hoops. I think the 16 gig one is going to be enough for me. I love it so far, I've only picked up my iPad3 once.
u realise of course, that when it launches its going to be in the US first ._. to wait for it to come to malaysia will take a while, u can of course order it, if its available on amazon. but atm, u can't pre order it if ur from malaysia because google doesn't allow it
Thought I would update my previous post now that I own a N7 (4 months) and a N4. 1. Android and iOS are worlds apart. I would agree with Paradoxine Vertas point #1 2. Combo of Google Now/Search operates better for me as a user. However, Siri is the better Assistant. Google is more practical. But this is subjective to the user 3. JB has no flash support. Adobe has now back away from flash on mobile platforms. I still wish the browsing experience was as good as the MS surface.
I believe adobe said they will no longer be supporting flash on Mobile devices. Flash on ICS was their last iteration. It will be HTML 5 from now on. Btw awesome review as Always man. Looks like the N7 will be a slam dunk for Google. So much for Jobs' thought of a tablet smaller than the iPad. Funny that apple will be releasing a mini iPad as well. Sellouts.
why the back cam is such a huge issue if you want to take photos use a good camera or use your smartphone , even if it had i would be super shity due to low price
I heard it will cost $20 extra on retail store and ONLY THE 16GB VERSION WILL BE SOLD at retain stores! Your best bet is buying directly from Google. I think tax is only mandatory if you live in California, not other states, but I am not so sure.
Anyone know why Flash is no longer supported? Is there a way around this like say using a different browser after installing flash from the play store?
I like it , gonna buy the 16GB version , there are a couple of things missing like the lack of a MicroSD card slot , a 3G option , I don't think I'm gonna like the always-portrait homescreens but that's not a problem since there are some decent 3rd party launchers on the Play Store. The main problem is ( once again ) the non expandable storage , but there is no such thing as a perfect device , besides , IT IS A NEXUS , first device to get official updates for the next 2-3 years !!!!!!!!!!!
No Flash in Chrome for mobil. Also Adobe has announced no support for any devices past 4.0. So Jelly Bean will not be supported (patches will still be made for the current version). Which is fine. At this point most sites have moved past Flash for mobile devices. With Adobe dropping support the sites that have not moved on sure will now.
I've owned the GT 7+ and samsung takes way too long to support their devices. They are just now pushing out ICS when jelly bean is now being pushed to devices. Another thing samsung does is push out new devices to compensate their lag of support. Nexus 7 will give you updated versions of Android directly from google, you do not have to wait for the manufacturer.
Download Adobe Flash (ICS ver) from Google Play before the 15th August (the date it is getting pulled) then use a different (i.e. not the pre-installed Chrome) Flash compatible browser such as FireFox for Android. You should have few issues for at least a year or two by which point HTML 5 will have replaced the need for the old format anyway.
Best $259 bucks I've ever spent 16 GB is plenty I have over 200 apps/games on it and still have 2gb left if I need more space I will just uninstall the apps I haven't been using a lot of games you play a couple times and they just sit there not being used so you get pretty good at managing your space.
if you can do that on a phone, I'm pretty positive you can do that on this. However you should support your developers, without them you wouldn't have the apps you enjoy today. It's only 99(or more) cents to buy an app. Support the developers of your favorite apps.
If you look up the Adobe Flash Player app in Google Play you will see that the app will not support any device newer than Android 4.0.4 and will never support these newer devices (i.e. Jelly Bean 4.1 and beyond)
1. But alot more open and customizable. I have an iPad myself and it frequently infuriates me when I have to go to great lengths just to do the most basic thing's. 2. Google now is currently far better than Siri, though this could change when IOS6 is released. 3. I used to want flash but I've come to the conclusion flash is just so bad and so inefficient that only the desktop with piles of unused processing power can utilise it. Looking forward to HTML5 adoption tbh.
Yeah, not cool about the missing SD slot, the hdmi and a starting memory of 8gb...but very happy that's there's no a back cam! It's useless and it actually annoys me seeing all of this people taking a picture with their massive iPad! It just looks wrong! :)
I agree with APPLE being a control freak. I had to go great lengths just to get my Brother laser printer to print on my Ipad. This is the reason why Techie hates APPLE so much. Android has finally up par with IOS and I'm moving away from APPLE.
for starter thank god they got ride of micro SD its slow as shit compared to internal flash flash storage and secondly if this does well there will be more storage on offer, plus with this tablet it just goes to show that google never wanted micro SD on a tablet, its all the manufacturers that wanted to add that shit. plus this is competing against tablets like the nook and the kindle fire which don't have micro SD either and no one complains about that.
It's sooo hard to find a video of someone actually USING the Nexus 7, not just puking up technical specs. Kudos to you man, I like this.
Really enjoyed your review of the Nexus 7 and wish it had a part 3!
Me too! It seems like an eternity. I have been waiting for this for 7 months (ever since Asus announced a similar tablet in CES in January)
I have my 16gb nexus 7 ordered and on the way. Can't wait to finally get my hands on it and use it for myself.
Wow, no SD slot? Seriously?
Unbelievable. What were they thinking?! Oh I know, it'll, perhaps, be in the NEXT Nexus 7...
Still, great, great price.
As always, great review Michael.

I hope you can still get it for other browsers you can download from the Play Store. I think you can, but not a 100% sure.
Yeah, that was unfortunate. The volume was too low and I failed to catch it before it was too late.
Totally agreed. A micro SD slot would have literally solve all of its shortcomings. Rear-cam and HDMI is unnecessary on a 7 inch tablet.
haven't rlly heard any news about it :o but the kindle fire is USD199 and ppl in malaysia selling it online are selling at bout 899 to 1k
I get your point. BTW, Do you have any idea how much the 8gb nexus7 will cost here? I heard it will be something around RM1.1k which is too expensive considering it is only USD199.
Not to keep on a phone style interface. I have that already on my Desire. Hopefully the Chameleon tablet UI will be released soon and run on it
Can't wait for Chameleon but it is not to be released until First week of August, Right when I get my Nexus 7!! Kickstarter rocks, follow the updates on there!
I am planning to buy one, but I would like to get some feedback regarding "project butter". Did it make the scrolling smoother? Actually smooth transition is the only thing I like about apple...and nothing more.
Would have been nice to be able to hear the tablet audio
Yeah I think that fixes the that issue! Its an awesome tablet and I am getting one. I think next Nexus should have expandable memory, HDMI, and maybe another camera and that should make the experience perfect, yet!
why is that? I live in Malaysia too, why is this gonna be a challenge, Is it not going to be sold here?
i have a few question and i don't know much of the android interface.

Please reply and thank you
Excellent review, very well executed.
theres a ICS camera app for the Nexus 7 on the Play store
I don't understand why they stopped the main screen from rotating? ICS does?
Nexus 7 is a 7.8 inch tab which is basically 8 right? Someonr correct me if im wrong
It's quite simple to install flash on nexus 7. You just need to download it outside the google play and install it. And use only flash-supporting browsers such as Firefox.

man thats one awesome tablet there. i might even sell my new ipad (iPad 3) to get this one. love Android and love this size.
Nice rain in the background.
Excellent review!
was it raining while you were making this video ?
this is awesome. i love the google now that is what im most excited about with this device. i can't wait to get my hands on mine!
I'm not to bummed about the lack of SD slot. I had the galaxy tab 2 and bought a 32 gig sd card and I used almost none of it. is it possible to transfer music from your computer to the nexus 7?
u realise of course, that when it launches its going to be in the US first ._. to wait for it to come to malaysia will take a while, u can of course order it, if its available on amazon. but atm, u can't pre order it if ur from malaysia because google doesn't allow it
Google's voice assistant sure beats the hell out of siri
To take pictures with the front camera can't you just download a camera app like Instagram?
Do you know what kind of games run on the Google Play store?
Very nice review, thanks!
Wait, doesn't Google chrome have integrated flash anyway?...
Cool. I will check that out. Thanks.
Great review! Ill be buying one
Can't wait to get mine :D
thks a lot for this great review, very clear, detailled, great video quality as well. +1 ! :)

3:44 lmao, "once inside all you have to do is say the magic word"
he had just bought a kindle fire the day before the nexus 7 announced
yes, you can definitely tether it to your phone and go online.
why the back cam is such a huge issue if you want to take photos use a good camera or use your smartphone , even if it had i would be super shity due to low price
can you do a comparison to the samsung tab 2 7.0?
what about the price difference?
I heard it will cost $20 extra on retail store and ONLY THE 16GB VERSION WILL BE SOLD at retain stores! Your best bet is buying directly from Google. I think tax is only mandatory if you live in California, not other states, but I am not so sure.
Great review. Thanks a lot! :)
I hate that you're limited to 16GB, other than that not many complaints.
It's a 7 inch tablet hence the name "Nexus 7".
Can't believe you even had to ask.
excellent review
Chrome supports HTML5? Can you test?
Anyone know why Flash is no longer supported? Is there a way around this like say using a different browser after installing flash from the play store?

should i get this or the galaxy tab plus2 7"
Yes there is a 3G version.
There will never be Flash support in Chrome according to Adobe.

no sd slot, no camera, why not just get the galaxy tab 7?
Does anyone know if Chrome will have native flash support like the desktop browser?
can i read epub books on this ???
if you can do that on a phone, I'm pretty positive you can do that on this. However you should support your developers, without them you wouldn't have the apps you enjoy today. It's only 99(or more) cents to buy an app.

can't wait till i can get one :( unfortunately i live in malaysia -.- this is going to be... a challenge...
I have one and I LOVE IT!
"Napoleon... your just jelous because i've been chatting with babes all day on this"
can i install pirated apps in nexus 7 ??
thats what i like to hear! (:
I am buying one!
agreed :( its the biggest flaw, but it could have been so easily fixed
That Google Search thing kicked Siri's ass!!! And I have an iPhone 4S! Siri is Siriously (sic) useless for me here in Canada!
1. But alot more open and customizable. I have an iPad myself and it frequently infuriates me when I have to go to great lengths just to do the most basic thing's.
2. Google now is currently far better than Siri, though this could change when IOS6 is released.

Yes it does :D
Why do you care? Maybe it´s the lack of the camera.
Yeah, not cool about the missing SD slot, the hdmi and a starting memory of 8gb...but very happy that's there's no a back cam! It's useless and it actually annoys me seeing all of this people taking a picture with their massive iPad! It just looks wrong! :)
No, it was 92 degrees and clear.

Yeah I agree, at least we can root it :D
Chrome / jelly bean = no flash
Ik know.. But thanks for replying
yes.
too bad this review doesn't cover video playback, video games rendering.
for starter thank god they got ride of micro SD its slow as shit compared to internal flash flash storage and secondly if this does well there will be more storage on offer, plus with this tablet it just goes to show that google never wanted micro SD on a tablet, its all the manufacturers that wanted to add that shit. plus this is competing against tablets like the nook and the kindle fire which don't have micro SD either and no one complains about that.
the most biggest fail is that they have no micro SD slot
great
My nexus 7 was broken~!!
Who the fuck cares. Are people still flaming over which tablet is better? Move on, people.
Lmao at 5:00
Microsoft Surface is much more attractive
and this device is 200 dollars.
unlike the ipad.
yeah you can lol
