Regardless of "Auto" brightness, the Nexus 7 should have been manually adjusted for brightness, to match the ipad's brightness. Who knows how different manufacturers set their "auto" brightness levels. Also, this is the first Gen Nexus 7, it made massive improvements in the 2nd Gen (2013) with much better screen and processor. The Nexus 7 also includes GPS. Ipad only does with the expensive Carrier option.
My god, I remember watching this 3 years ago when I wanted to decide which tablet I wanted for Christmas. I ended up going with the Nexus 7. My god I miss the look and feel of Jelly Bean. My nexus 7 now sits on a shelf because it is really slow on lollipop and the touchscreen doesn't work. That intro-much nostalgia!
In 2013 and 2014 why the hell would anyone waste time with the ancient, stone age ios, still with lack of customization and funcionality ? Why ? Because of shiny screen ? OMFG. We are humans, not magpies. Wake up apple and start to do real improvements before somebody on the android based starts to produce shiny sheite.
lol you are so wrong ios 7 is really improving apple and now if u compare the ipad 7 with the ipad mini I would say apple wins, and I like apple more, but that just my opinion so keep hating fandroid.
Lol first of all you dont need to be so mean lol btw I like apple more then android but its ok to love android but the thing is ok sure before when appled didint have ios 7 then I can agree that the android phones looked better but I cant really say it now,and yeah maybe I was mean to so I not gonna say to much.
***** the problem is if you never tried to have all the root access to your phone then you wont know how much fun you've missed.. im using the nexus and mini but i barely play the mini for more than 15-30min.. because i got so bored with the mini same design layout... well the ios7 looks good but that's it...i cant do much customization with it..
The Nexus 7 is so much better, easier to hold, has a gorgeous high PPI display, and is such a great value for it's money. It's truly the best portable tablet.
lysol5555 The Nexus is much more pleasurable to hold, feels amazing with that soft-touch, and can be used for extended periods of time one-handed for reading etc. The iPad has none of those things, and is relegated to "ooh, shiny" but functionally is worse.
Samudra Sanyal lol i understand that you may have your opinion on which one is easier to hold, but i honestly have huge hands so its not that comfortable plus the bezel on the nexus is really really thick, on top and bottom and for what?
The "white space" in not an issue on the Nexus 7, it persists over many Android phones, like my galaxy s3. It is not an issue on Android, it is a *Chrome* for Mobile problem.
You can't do shit on i-anything! On android you can download apps that aren't even on the app store. You can customize way more, and its more like a computer than a tablet!!
android has about 100,000 apps on the app store, apple has over 10,000,000 apps. there way better quality. ive had my nexus for 3 months and its broken. ive never dropped it. ive had my ipod for 3 years and its way faster way more fun and ive dropped it dozens of times and its still perfect.
MrBaconman29 ok for the quality thing, you cannot say that. Quality depends on the programmer, not the OS. I'm sure you did something to your nexus. They don't just 'break'. BTW iPods are generally slower than any tablet
ive had both, i like the ipad better because it feel's better in the hand and i find IOS 7 very easy to use. and i know this has nothing to do with the developer but i prefer the jailbreak softwear on the ipad.
Except every company (save for charity organisations) relies on "wasting" peoples money. Although, some of your modern favourite companies came up with innovative new currencies like crippling your privacy and time, which in turn are converted into money by business models largely unknown to users (no such thing happening in Apple's transparent revenue stream). Google could literally sell you hardware at a loss, and would be happy to do so given the annual profits you generate for them as a user. So wake up and get some perspective.
After all the searching of information on the nexus 7 this is the most straight forward and understandable video I have found thank you for making this~!!!!!!!!
Nexus 7 3013 had multi touch issues right out the box as well as GPS issues. They rolled out a patch shortly after that "fixed" the problem but 90% of people are still having the problem with the touch screen. It even has problems with speakers that crackle at lower volumes. Many Nexus 7 owners have found their device to be DOA possibly due to Asus using cheap and low quality memory. Also it's *your* not *you*re*.
The mini's 4:3 aspect ratio works much better for reading, particularly for reading pdf documents with a screen that's about an inch wider. As reading pdf documents is my biggest use for a portable tablet, I chose the mini.
I was so happy to get rid of my Ipad, I'm just glad someone was willing to buy it. Had a Nexus 7 for well over a year and it is perfect, well almost. It is so vastly superior to the full size Ipad I had. The Ipad was a nightmare: decent hardware but so many limitations it was ridiculous. I had Androids first, then Icrap stuff. Taught college classes about mobile devices so I had to teach Istuff to everyone but I never badmouthed the istuff it was just an inferior ecosystem, limited hardware (such as screen sizes), and limited options. The Ipad was frustrating. Iphones always looked like toys compared to the larger Androids. But Apple is catching up on screen sizes both smaller tablets and larger phones. Nexus 7 rocks along with my Note 2.
at least the makers of nexus focussed more on the durability of the tablet than the looks of it. if you do a drop test on the ipad mini and nexus 7, the ipad mini is bound to crack open whereas the nexus 7 looks quite good and solid and that's just what i need. not trying to be an Apple hater, but the thing that really annoys me with their ipod touch's etc are that they tend to crack way to easily!
I don't care what anyone says, but speaking from the perspective as a MacBook user, and a Nexus 4 user, I would undoubtably choose the iPad mini. It is way more immersive and you can do so much more on the iPad than you ever could on any android. It can connect to so many more devices in the world, whereas the Nexus 7 only has exclusive connectivity with the Nexus 4.
Not to mention a small portion comparing the camera usage on the same service and a quick mention of benchmarks would have made a more thorough review.
I'm not going to debate whether nexus is better than iPad. I have a nexus 7 because it's what I could afford and it's been a great tablet. It has issues but I've yet to see a piece of technology that doesn't. I love my nexus. I appreciate Google for putting a tablet out there that is very good and that is actually affordable to more people.
I love the Nexus 7 however after 2 years of buying it, its performance really has suffered. It lags, it's not exactly fast however it still copes and loads stuff up quickly. My girlfriend has an iPad Mini and it's less comfortable to hold, its screen is worse and the battery is worse. But, the build quality is solid plus it has a rear facing camera.
+Bjork Vlogdok the 2012 nexus on lollipop is a nightmare. I am cosidering doing a cloning of the storage and a factory reset, but there is too much nostalgia on my tablet.
The basic choice of these two tablets is which OS you prefer and what your budget is. They're both from high quality manufacturers, run the top mobile OS's and are at an affordable price.
As you can tell in the review the Ipad mini is better in almost every aspect. Not only that it's as fast or faster than the Nexus 7 with two less processor cores and half the RAM. The Ipad mini is not over priced, It's priced adequately for what you get. I have a Ipad 4 32 GB Retina and a Nexus 7 32 GB. I own several Apple and Android tablets and I can honestly say I like them all pretty equally. Specs on paper and real world performance are two different things. This comparison proves that.
I am assuming you have the blackberry playbook? I am disappointed that BB is no longer updating the playbook to BB 10, but lets see how well I will be able to use this. I hope there is not as much lag like I had with android 2.2 (with original galaxy s phone). I am counting on project butter!
The main trouble with apple is they always force you into new updated products, your iPad or iPhone will be obsolete within 2-3 years, iPad 1 has virtually no app support now. you can't download anything to it now. Nexus 7, purchased a brand new 2012 model last week 32gb for 100 pounds and out of the box it got 5 updates and is now on 4.4.4 the tablet is coming on to being what apple would say is old tek but its still fully supported by the play store and has the latest OS the iPad 1 could run the latest iOS and apps just apple take it away from you, just so you upgrade its utter bull shit, don't get me wrong iPads and iPhones are gorgeous devices i have apple products but prefer android because apple just don't give 2 hoots about its older tech, inevitably if you are like me and take care of your stuff your precious investment will be worthless within 3-4 years, I've had my hd tv for 10 years it works fine.. just cos its slightly out dated it still does the job. For fucks sake apple Get your god damn shit together. the customer builds your empire, Don't forget that! ….
I have several high end tablets but thinking of getting a smaller tablet for reading books and the Nexus 7 seems better for that sort of thing mainly due to its size. its about the size of an actual book and seems to look a lot more portable than the ipad mini. I might just wait to see if a newer version is introduced at Google IO in a few weeks hoping for one with a smaller bezel but relatively the same overall size
Not only do I have a Nexus7, on which I'm writing this, but my wife is by my side with her iPad mini and daughter with her ipad2. Left the Galaxy7 at home. Just been looking at some stunning photos transferred from the panny G6 to the n7, taken at Chatsworth on Tuesday.
He said in the video he doubts people would do that; but I think you missed his point. He was trying to convey portability, not really whether a device is a better fit for the pants pocket.
I got a Nexus 7 16gb on launch day (back then it was about 275$ for 16 gig and 235$ for 8 gig after tax and shipping) and recently got an iPad mini 32gb. I love both tablets but prefer the Nexus 7 better because of its superior speed and screen. The color saturation is horrible on Nexus 7, but you get used to it.
The iPad clearly started playing the embedded RUclips video first. You got distracted with the GUI's overlay disappearing first on the Nexus, but the video itself started on the iPad first.
It's too bad this post doesn't mention the camera capabilities of these devices! The Nexus has a front-facing 1.2 megapixel camera for still photos (from what I can find online in the tech specs). The iPad Mini has the 1.2 front-facing camera with 720p HD video, as well as a 5 megapixel camera with 1080p HD video.
One problem I have constantly with the Nexus 7 is the speakers. They're just so low-quality and are very quiet and have distorted sound. Unless you have an equalizer app or Volume+, which I don't have, I really don't like the speakers. Nope. Not one bit about it.
A red tint is a good thing. It means that your display is probably closer to 6500k. Most people see it as reddish because of how cool displays are these days. The nexus 7 is almost exactly 6500 k.
As far as I'm aware, you can install older versions of the operating system if the update is laggy, cause it's open source. You can do the same thing with firefox. I'm hoping to get a nexus 7 myself.
i would buy google nexus 7 right now if it only had a rear-facing camera. it's such a great bargain! i've been researching all-day-long and the google nexus 7's price would make it sit with other cheaper tablets like the samsung galaxy tab 2 and acer 7 and asus Memo but the nexus 7 is just so good that it beats them all and is comparable with something as powerful as the ipad mini! i would choose the nexus 7 over the ipad mini mainly because of price&widgets and customisation on the nexus 7
In terms of color saturation, it was a poor comparison since auto is not same on the two. A more valid comparison would have been to place both on maximum and minimum.
You forgot on major difference here and it's a VERY important one; QUALITY. The google Nexus is a much cheaper quality made tablet period. That's not even as compared to the Ipad Mini which we know is much higher quality. There's also countless reviews on Amazon, Staples and other sites from users saying that their Nexus died after a month. Their Nexus glass cracked after a simple drop or even trying to tighten a loose corner etc. I like that the Nexus has better resolution but it's a gamble.
I'm not going to go out there and say one is better than the other, because everyone has their likes and interests and reasons, but I have to agree that those are a few of the main reasons people go with Apple products, from what I've seen in my experience. It usually has everything to do with the design, and nothing to do with what it can actually do. Almost every comment I've seen about the Mini either involves weight, brightness, screen size, or build quality. That's mainly it.
Buy the new Nexus 7 when it comes out. It gives you true Android with 2GB of RAM, and a 1900 by 1200 screen. That is a ppi of 323, which about doubles the iPad mini with 164. Why would you buy an iPad unless you are a huge Apple fan? Even the old Nexus 7 beats the iPad Mini.
yup, i dropped, scraped, my nexus a dozen times. No scratch and it hasnt broken yet. However when i got it the screen became loose on its own, and i talked to google but they said it was a fault with the nexus.
Most of us take our Tablets on holiday, for you in the USA Vacation. So we use them in the sun light , well my Nexus ( for which i bought for cost diff) works really well in the sun light ,not so well for the iPad . Just one of many things for which i choose the Nexus and if you watch films or play music opt for the 32gb version. Hope this helps in choosing your next tablet.
Brand new Nexus 7 16GB from Staples: $178 vs iPad Mini 16GBfrom the Apple store: $330 |||||| (2x) Nexus 7 = $358 || $358-$330=$28 You can almost get two Nexus 7's for the same price as ONE iPad Mini.. Is the iPad Mini really better than almost two Nexus 7's? Riddle me this: with this big of a price difference, why are these two products even being compared? I think Google and Asus did an amazing job with the Nexus 7 considering the price.
The Nexus 7 is really good but I had to exchange it 3 times before I finally bought a Tab 2. I loved them both before I sold by Tab 2 to buy a Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13.
I think both products are great :) I own a Nexus 7 and absolutely love it. It really just depends on what kind of tablet experience you want. With Android you have more control over everything, it's more customizable. Apple is more controlled but it's more stable.
The nexus 7's color only looks worse in this because he turned the brightness down. It's color is actually mush better looking when you have it on a brighter setting.
I have directly compared both devices and the Nexus 7 is superior in every way. And apple said that the lag was normal for the ipad mini once you use up a certain amount of space and the only way to get rid of it would be a factory reset. And I'm not a fanboy, I just like to get the best value for money. I would easily jump ship to apple if they offered something for decent value and if they improved ios, but currently, no. I grew up using apple computers so I don't hate them.
Here's my quick comparison: I tried loading and rendering a 500+MB medical pdf on both - Nexus 7 did it smoothly and in no time, while the Mini was struggling. Basic web browsing: Mini slightly better, but irelevant. Gaming: i don't care. Taking notes with evernote: keyboard - Nexus 7 has no hickups, Mini is better with stylus, due to better iOS integration and larger screen. Video playback: Nexus 7, 720p fits perfectly and has a youtube app. App selection: Mini, but PlayStore isn't far behind.
I actually can and will argue about the how the iPad Mini looks worse in terms of design compared to other android tablets(No design whats so ever - just a thin sheet of aluminum with chamfered edges and minimal bezel. And i don't know if you read my whole comment or not but people prefer Nexus 7 for its Soft touch grip because it doesn't slip from your hands, has a tight grip, and helps with WiFi-reception since its plastic............and aluminum certaintely doesn't offer these values
I got my mini with cellular and it's great for my car. I use it for music, GPS, and siri. Everything just works with voice activation. This is something that Google has not refined with Nexus 7.
Nexus is superior in OS, iPad is superior in overall quality. While the Nexus has it's super complicated OS name that makes it faster and stuff, the iPad has far greater build quality which is why the price is so high. I mean it's made out of glass and metal, not plastic. You also have to consider how while the Nexus has a higher screen resolution, the iPad still comes out ahead in color saturation and overall look of the device when in use. I don't even know why people care! Just chose one!
I own both a Nexus 7 (2012) and an iPad 4, and I would have happily paid twice the price of the Nexus 7 if it would have been just as responsive as the iPad 4. It's so incredibly unresponsive at times ...
actually he didn't say that... he just said it had a much better/bigger ecosystem. which I think is true. but if you're going to buy one of them it depends on what you want and how much you're willing to pay.
** I like bits of both** I wish the Ipad mini had the Nexus7 plastic back cover. Nexus7 feels better to hold and the Ipad mini I feed the need to put it in a case. I also wish the Nexus7 had the extra inch and brighter screen like the Ipad mini. The extra inch makes a big difference to me. Thank God Chrome is available on both platforms.
Depends on your preferences, I'm a big Apple fan but though I'd go for the Nexus 7 because it has the technologies that I use or develop stuff with, like NFC and stuff, and I don't need cellular data so the Nexus 7 would be my choice :/
Tbh with you, the n7 screen on maximum brightness does seem relatively low compared to other lcds. Seems more like amoled brightness but anyways, the brightest between the two (not in my opinion as I have both including the tab 2 7.0) is the ipad mini but the tab 2 7.0 is even brighter than the mini. Colour reproduction wise, the n7 has warmer colours, tab 2 has poor colour reproduction (cream yellow whites, blue tint), mini tends to be more accurate and has the colder whites in comparison.
Umm let me think.....I could either get the Nexus 7 due to its NFC, Gaming, Notifications, widgets, Pocketable size, Customization, little to no restrictions,multi-tasking, and Soft-touch back for $200 to $299 or the iPad Mini for larger screen, color saturation, and its app store starting at $329 to $529.
I do like Android, but it always comes across as cheep and 2nd place when using Apple devices, i just think Google need to up their game a little on Apps, build quality and user friendliness, the thing that keeps me on Apple is the fact that everything actually does just work as i expect
+Wes Craig (WesselGaming) Android has good quality phones and apps, but low quality tablet apps that are mostly enlarged phone apps. There are quality android tablets from Sony and Tab S2, but the nexus tabs overall are pretty poor in quality and google and their nexus manufacture (HTC and Asus) doesn't care.
These are both good products. But please do never do any comparison between an idevice and an Android device. It's like the comparison between PCs and Macintosh.
Reds are better, blues are a little better greens are worse. Therefore, colours are about the same, depending on whether or not you are looking at more green, or more red. The gamma, however, is far superior on the iPad Mini, and there's no real way to change that on the nexus 7. Moving in the nexus 7s favor, the color gamut is larger(except green) and it's much sharper.
I happen to own both..i bought a Nexus 7 and won a mini at work..i must say the Nexus is definitely may favorite tablet. I think i may even like it more than my 10" transformer prime. Just because its literally the PERFECT SIZE. Great performance. I play Grand Theft Auto Vice City on both and the Nexus handles it like a champ, where as the mini takes FOREVER to load and drops in framerate after turning onto a new street. Other games lack in performance as well. Nexus wins!
I think it is wrong of you to turn down the brightness on the Nexus than talk about saturation.
I also noticed this.
i'm too late for the party. but just fyi when you increase the brightness saturation decreases

'not known for its performance'
literally highest resolution tablet on the the planet. -.-
Archie Goodman he's right. It wasn't a bad performer, just not the best. It also deteriorated A LOT over months of use.
I just bought the iPad and replaced it for my nexus iPad is a ton better
Same for me also

Can you even compare a beautiful aluminum tablet with HD cameras, with a plastic, one camera tablet that is plastic?
The Nexus 7 is so much better, easier to hold, has a gorgeous high PPI display, and is such a great value for it's money. It's truly the best portable tablet.
Agree, I used both of them, own the nexus 7, much better performance and best value for money + I prefer android devices, so nexus is a must!
nexus is a piece of shit, it's like microsoft windows for the tablet world. Nexus 7 built quality is shit compare to ipad mini.

"the plastic makes it feel durable" what?
It honestly does. It doesn't feel like Samsung's plastic on their Galaxy range (Note 3 excluded). It feels kind of rubbery and premium.

Apple love to waste people's money. Enough said.

It all depends on the drop. The impact can change within a millimeter of distance and just a slight difference of movement.

Real vs crap comparision.
My mini its still working today lol
While Google Now works good for the web, you can not tell Nexus 7 to get direction and it would do that without taking additional manual steps
6 minutes into the video..

Your problem with the colors is that the automatic brightness is too low. If you set the brightness higher the colors will look amazing.

I chose the Nexus 7 and am really happy with it. I bought the 32Gb version and could not think about buying anos iPad mini...
I have several high end tablets but thinking of getting a smaller tablet for reading books and the Nexus 7 seems better for that sort of thing mainly due to its size. its about the size of an actual book and seems to look a lot more portable than the ipad mini. I might just wait to see if a newer version is introduced at Google IO in a few weeks hoping for one with a smaller bezel but relatively the same overall size
if you have open/running multiple apps this 1 second issues turns into a a 5 second issue. HD rendering and gaming is also effected.
I think that the screen tests would have been more accurate if you had the brightnesses the same
1:27 "It feels sooo good in the hand" LOL
Not only do I have a Nexus7, on which I'm writing this, but my wife is by my side with her iPad mini and daughter with her ipad2. Left the Galaxy7 at home.
Just been looking at some stunning photos transferred from the panny G6 to the n7, taken at Chatsworth on Tuesday.
He said in the video he doubts people would do that; but I think you missed his point. He was trying to convey portability, not really whether a device is a better fit for the pants pocket.
Colour Saturation? have you cranked the Nexus up to even 1/2. feels like you could walk into the screen.
LOL who cares
Its just amazing how that A5 chip is still going strong
Did you update to ios 7? It'll make your iPad waterproof. You should test it.
A red tint is a good thing. It means that your display is probably closer to 6500k. Most people see it as reddish because of how cool displays are these days. The nexus 7 is almost exactly 6500 k.
I bought the nexus 7 had it for a couple days and returned it and bought the ipad mini, the iPads sound quality with ear buds blew the nexus away.
I wish the function buttons on the nexus 7 were built into the bottom bezel instead of taking up screen space
Ios interface is much more user friendly, no stupid app drawer.
Did you buy the old gen nexus or 2013 edition?
Even the old Nexus 7 beats the iPad Mini.
deciding between a regular size ipad and ipad mini. Do I get anything else besides a bigger screen with the regular size compared to the mini?
Looking forward to seeing what the new nexus 7 tablet will be worth splashing out on
It's hard to tell the colors when the default brightness levels are different. I would have liked to see them on the same brightness level.
You said the ipad wins on the pinch and zoom, but the ipad had to enhance the text the nexus didn't.
yup, i dropped, scraped, my nexus a dozen times. No scratch and it hasnt broken yet. However when i got it the screen became loose on its own, and i talked to google but they said it was a fault with the nexus.
It matters if you need to compare old nexus 7 to ipad mini?
So, your alibi is that you were busy committing felony assault.
These are the two best tablets in small size segment !
yeah i know. im waiting for the next nexus 7. google I/O isn't as good, is it?
Here's my quick comparison: I tried loading and rendering a 500+MB medical pdf on both - Nexus 7 did it smoothly and in no time, while the Mini was struggling. Basic web browsing: Mini slightly better, but irelevant. Gaming: i don't care. Taking notes with evernote: keyboard - Nexus 7 has no hickups, Mini is better with stylus, due to better iOS integration and larger screen. Video playback: Nexus 7, 720p fits perfectly and has a youtube app. App selection: Mini, but PlayStore isn't far behind.
was the brightness for the 7 all the way up same for the ipad?
I actually can and will argue about the how the iPad Mini looks worse in terms of design compared to other android tablets(No design whats so ever - just a thin sheet of aluminum with chamfered edges and minimal bezel. And i don't know if you read my whole comment or not but people prefer Nexus 7 for its Soft touch grip because it doesn't slip from your hands, has a tight grip, and helps with WiFi-reception since its plastic............and aluminum certaintely doesn't offer these values
Apple tablet's internet says it is loaded when it really isn't and is still making connections, its a marketing technique.
I got my mini with cellular and it's great for my car. I use it for music, GPS, and siri. Everything just works with voice activation. This is something that Google has not refined with Nexus 7.
I have a Nexus 7 2013 ,there are less HD apps for it ,but iPad mini has a lot.
iPad mini is smooth.. iPad mini is expensive because of the materials used in iPad?
Nexus is superior in OS, iPad is superior in overall quality. While the Nexus has it's super complicated OS name that makes it faster and stuff, the iPad has far greater build quality which is why the price is so high. I mean it's made out of glass and metal, not plastic. You also have to consider how while the Nexus has a higher screen resolution, the iPad still comes out ahead in color saturation and overall look of the device when in use. I don't even know why people care! Just chose one!
which one should i buy?..
I own both a Nexus 7 (2012) and an iPad 4, and I would have happily paid twice the price of the Nexus 7 if it would have been just as responsive as the iPad 4. It's so incredibly unresponsive at times ...
If it is priced adequately, then the Nexus 7 should be 658?
actually he didn't say that... he just said it had a much better/bigger ecosystem. which I think is true. but if you're going to buy one of them it depends on what you want and how much you're willing to pay.
When you hold iPad mini in the hand, you opinion on this device will blow your mind
Seriously, turn the brightness up all the way, or compare the brightness levels for a moment.
I used to have a nexus 7. It would crash a lot. But, you could get some apps that are banned on iPad.
Umm let me think.....I could either get the Nexus 7 due to its NFC, Gaming, Notifications, widgets, Pocketable size, Customization, little to no restrictions,multi-tasking, and Soft-touch back for $200 to $299 or the iPad Mini for larger screen, color saturation, and its app store starting at $329 to $529.
definetly! just using my friends today it's amazing and I now really want one.
I do like Android, but it always comes across as cheep and 2nd place when using Apple devices, i just think Google need to up their game a little on Apps, build quality and user friendliness, the thing that keeps me on Apple is the fact that everything actually does just work as i expect
Build Quality:
HTC One
Sony Xperia 1/2
Droid MAxx/Razr
Nexus wins!
