Apparently the tape recordings in the song Sleep are of the lead singer Gerard recounting his night terrors he had while recording this album at the Paramour Mansion which has a rumor that it is haunted. Just thought that was kinda interesting
That's an awesome detail and I'm glad that you mentioned that!
Over the years I have come to really like that fact. Since it more or less means by what fans (me included sometimes) when they that this band has lore and so the theatrically/playful-ness of the band.
Like is it that the Paramour Mansion is really haunted? Was it just because of their mental health issues? A bit of both? Yeah, it's up for interpretation and i love it.
Other people may have already explained but like every MCR record, The Black Parade is a concept album, it revolves around the near-death experience of a cancer patient only named The Patient who is confronted by a parade of dead souls in purgatory because his fondest memory was his father taking him to see a parade in the big city. Also the leader of The Black Parade is named Pepe who is the skeleton on the album cover.

The story goes:
The End. - The Patient's thoughts on himself before his heart temporarily fails.
Dead! - The Patient is confronted by The Black Parade, specifically Pepe, Fear & Regret. Foreshadowing his journey of judgment and self reflection.
This Is How I Disappear - The Patient, knowing he wasn't the best person in his life, fears that if The Lover does leave him, he'll have no one to remember him due to him pushing away everyone else in his life.
The Sharpest Lives - Fear & Regret confront The Patient about his past alcohol abuse
Welcome To The Black Parade - The Patient reflects on his father's words, feeling like he let him down as Pepe tries to assure The Patient that his memory will carry on through the parade.
I Don't Love You - The Patient reflects on how he tried to convince The Lover to leave him so she won't have to see him die.
House Of Wolves - Fear & Regret manifest The Patient's fear of going to hell for the bad thing's he's done.
Cancer - Self explanatory.
Mama - Pepe begins to feel sympathy for The Patient and tells The Patient he was once a ww1 soldier who was disowned by his own mother for being "cowardly"
Sleep - The Patient begins to loose himself in self pity and apathy and Pepe screams at him to wake up and not succumb to the hellfire
Teenagers - The Patient gives his backstory on how his adolescence made him an apathetic and angry young man.
Disenchanted - As The Patient continues to wallow in his sorrows and how he feels like he set himself up for this fate, Pepe tries to tell him it's not too late for him
Famous Last Words - As The Patient hears The Lover from the other side, he is given the choice to either stay in purgatory, go to heaven, go to hell or get a second chance at life, and it's up to the listener to decide his fate.
Blood - This technically takes place before the rest of the album is just The Patient being a little shit in the hospital.
This is just one theory, I personally believe the patient dies at the end, and a slightly different song order
I like to think of the album version of Famous Last Words with the fading out at the end being the patient going to heaven and the radio version is him going to hell.

It’s going to blow your mind that the leading theory is that the songs interchange between the patient and death. The song sleep is when the patient dies but death is trying to tell them to wake up. When you subscribe to this train of thought you see this already incredible album in a different light

I feel the central theme of death throughout this album, and not even seeing it as scary or intimidating but rather trying to come to terms with it since it’s a part of everybody’s life is such a rare take on a controversial topic. It’s an admittance to the only thing in life that’s guaranteed. The Black Parade is the march we all take at the end of our lives. It’s a tragic but beautiful message throughout the album. Disenchanted and I Don’t Love You are my two favorite songs on here.
this is how i disappear is one of my favorite songs ever. i think i remember hearing somewhere that it's about alcoholism. i could be wrong, but it definitely fits.

I recently got the chance to see them live and I am so grateful!!! I went into the concert with Famous Last Words being my favorite song of theirs, and left with Sleep moving to the #1 spot. Seeing it live was just- AH. The vocal manipulation, the drums, the chord progression- EVERYTHING
man this album is fantastic. i remember buying the CD as a kid and blood isn't listed on the track list so after famous last words i went to start the CD back during the silence and blood started playing and scared the shit out of me lol. my favorite songs on this album are disenchanted and mama :)

When I saw MCR live last year, Cancer was the final song performed as a "good bye" to the audience and it was hauntingly beautiful and closed out an epic night.
I think Famous Last Words still remains my favourite song but literally every song on this album is a banger.
I have been listening to this album almost daily..since I discovered MCR about 3 years ago. This is the best album ever. And I am an old lady. I like all kinds of music, mainly pop. Anything inspired by Queen. Glad you’re putting this out. ❤ The drummer is spectacular. I agree with you. I Don’t Love You is the best track. Mama second.
"This is a really tight fucking band" YES. After 13 years this still hits me like a ton of bricks. I also remember thinking this reminded me of Queen of some level - maybe it's the theatrical approach Gerard gives so often, and the heart he pours in his vocals. Loved this then and still do. This is one of the albums where I find no flaws from - musically and lyrically, this is a masterpiece. Gerard is a fucking genius. "Sharpest lives" and " Famous last words" are my favourites from this album.

P.S. In retrospective, I feel that the "death" Gerard is so often referring to might be the death of his old self. The lyrics hit differently after taking that point of view.

i was smiling all the way through this video. This album is such a jam packed explosion and it's awesome to see which parts of the music resonate with you - like your reaction to the "juliet loves the beat" line in Sharpest Lives, lol. Your description of the music as sinister and playful was really apt! I also really appreciate what you said at 40:30 - I think MCR got stuck with a certain reputation as the "vampire suicide cult" band and they deserve more credit for their skill as musicians and the complexity of their storytelling. same goes for a lot of bands in that genre. Anyways thanks for another great reaction. Fun fact: the female vocalist at the end of Mama is Liza Minnelli!
My favorite off this album is Sleep. I love the loud, chaotic, desperate feel to it... as someone who has struggled with insomnia since I was 12, I can relate to it. That feeling of being so exhausted and desperate for sleep but unable to reach it. It feels like how this song feels.

Each song after dead is a conversation between the patient and a solider and it's a nice album with a story
dude you are a breath of fresh air amidst the music reaction youtube videos. Your demeanor is so calm and likeable and genuine and you have actual things to say about the music. Your breakthrough was thoroughly entertaining. Great stuff. Really appreciated your input in I dont love you. I feel like that one is an underrated(ish) gem, the vocals are so so so so so good. My personal fav for sure. Playful is defintiely the word to describe this album and MCR as a whole. Its so cheeky and fun despite the heavy theme or whatever. If you havent, you should definitely listen to their first album; lots of bangers and the sound is so so raw.
The album ends with Famous Last words. Blood is just a bonus track/ easter egg that plays after 100 seconds of silence on the cd version, hence the "hidden".

@@TheCycloneHunteri know if i was in their place i couldn't have brought myself to leave it off the album. and i think it really works in context, imagine you finish this masterpiece, sitting there still processing what you just heard on the last song while the silence plays, and then blood starts and it's like a little shock to the system that you need to unwind and be able to think about the album as a whole with a clearer mind

Part of blood was expressing that no matter how much an artist gives of themselves it’s never enough for many fans who want more and more, meanwhile the artists are suffering trying to give as much as possible while seeming normal to the fans. I love seeing people react to MCR's albums for the first time, it's such a magical experience! I love how you go in-depth on your thoughts and theories, and it's great listening to the musical insight that you have. And the air drumming was sick. :D Also, listening to Mama for the first time and being utterly taken aback is a right of passage for any MCR fan, lmao, it's so good.
I've been listening to them since I was pre-teen and I was lucky enough to see them live in 2012 and then once again last October, ten years later. They're truly one of a kind and defy all attempts to shove them into a box, their music is so versatile, emotional, theatrical, and just catchy as all fuck. I definitely echo others that Bullets, their first album, is a must-listen! Seeing their growth from then to Black Parade and then Danger Days and Conventional Weapons and their latest single is insane. Although it's very much a more unpolished album it has a ton of raw emotion, heart, and lyricism that's seriously good. And DD and Conventional Weapons are very different in terms of genre/tone from their other three albums but still great, too! 👍
I hit "like" with the air drumming part, it makes me so happy how fun it is to get lost in this music and forget my life for a few minutes

This album got me through the hardest parts of my life, when I was much younger (when the album first came out) it helped me through my teenage depression and suicidal/self loathing thoughts. Then again over a decade later when my partner and I were struggling the most in our relationship, a new child, transitioning from a previous way of life into a new and unfamiliar one, infidelity, alcoholism, self harm, SA, you name it. My absolute darkest days. And this album was what got me through it. Such an amazing piece of work. So happy to see it still being appreciated so many years after its release
To put it simply, Three Cheers set the bar, The Black Parade blew it out of the water. Also it is very much a concept album, based around death and what the band called “The Black Parade” or essentially wayward souls who guide newly dead souls through the afterlife. They left it somewhat vague and up to interpretation, which was another stroke of genus on what was already a nearly flawless album.
I’d say my favorite song would have to be Famous Last Words (which actually has 2 different versions, you should check out the radio version, it has a different ending which has spawned a bunch of different theories) or Sleep. FLW is just an epic don’t give up anthem that has helped me through many a tough time, and Sleep, where do I even start… I think you summed it up pretty good, that ending is just such a gut punch, especially when you look into some of the theories surrounding this album.
i don't know if someone requested you to react to Danger days (they're next album, and last), but if you will, you need to know somethings...
Danger Days compared to the previous albums it's much worse (listen to me, i'm a fan of them and i really love Danger Days)... BUT, i have so much love for this album, i love the energy from 2010 and the psychedelic rock vibe.
It's a conceitual album, follows the story of the HQ of Gerard Way (he also created Umbrella academy, have a adaptation in Netflix), The lives of the fabulous Killjoys it's the name. The Black Parade it's MCR best album so far, but Danger Days i kept in my heart.
You should react to Danger days, man. But listen with low expectations, because it's not the same level of Three Cheers or The Black Parade.

"What you got under your shirt" in teenagers is referencing school shootings, the music video even includes a message at the end. A lot of this album is anti war although Mama has a strong audience with trans people because of the line "You should have raised a baby girl I could've been a better son" Famous Last Words is actually inspired by Mikey leaving to seek help after he was battling addiction. Gerard was terrified of losing his brother. The Sleep recording is Gerard's ramblings as they battled with insomnia and nightmares whilst staying in a haunted place. Blood truly was a hidden track no one knew it existed unless they left the cd playing long enough to get past the long silence.
Danger Days is unjustly hated in my opinion. It's just a very different style than what people were expecting from mcr and that was intentional. Gerard wanted to break away from the dark, depressing, vampire imagery. The lyrics still have a lot of meaning and it's a concept album based on Gerard's comic series so I still highly recommend giving it a listen.
The voice recording that you hear in “Sleep” is actually Gerard Way (the lead singer) describing his experiences while staying in a supposedly haunted hotel (I think it was a hotel-could have been a house) during the recording of The Black Parade.

This was one of those albums that took me a while to fully get into. The first time I heard it. I was going off of my preconceived notions on emo music, which were negative. Emo is now one of my favorite overall genres and this is one of my favorite albums. A good tip for anyone listening to music outside of their comfort zone is that you should be as open minded as possible, and you might end up liking music that you would otherwise write off.
The story of this album is pretty hard to pull apart, due to the album not really being in the order of the story. This album is about a man (whos the main character of the story) getting cancer and not knowing if he's going to heaven or hell. The album goes through how he feels before dying (on songs like Cancer), along with when he does die and what happens after. I could attempt to go into more detail but I'm sure someone else is going to explain it better than I could ever do. As I mentioned earlier, I really love how this album is how is not necessarily in order of the story, so you don't need to know the story to enjoy the music. And if you do want to get into the story, there's another level of greatness to the album.
Love seeing people sit down and properly experience this album for the first time. If you haven't already, you HAVE to watch the accompanying music videos for this album, Welcome to the Black Parade at the very least..

So another music creator on YT made a video on how about the songs of the album are not in chronological order.
If mixed around it tells the story of The Patient, who is currently dying of cancer looking back on his life and The Parader/Death, a lost soul come to usher him into the afterlife.
When the song starts quiet, melodic or with just a single instrument leading in, and the vocals are controlled and more harmonious, it's The Patient; He's dying, reflecting on himself, he's not been quite a good person and he's coming to terms with the fact that he is dying alone in a hospital.
When the song starts bombastic and the vocals are loud and coming from deep, it's The Parader who starts out not caring about yet another soul to be ushered along; Oh boo-hoo, another death, another human feeling sorry for himself.
However, as the songs go back and forth, The Patient and The Parader having a 'conversation' of sorts where the latter more or less reacts to what the former is emoting, The Parader begins to open up to this person. He too died alone, on a battlefield, and at one point he doesn't want The Patient dying anymore (sleep, where we can hear The Parader screaming 'wake up!' at The Patient in the end).
But, Death has to happen. So what does The Parader do for this kindred soul? He throws him his parade. The song starts with The Patient, singing his song about a childhood memory and then The Parader, instead of singing something else back REPEATS The Patient. He's singing HIS song, ushering him off to the afterlife with the Black Parade.
I like that explanation, it puts the album in a bit of a different light.

Anyone can say what they will about MCR, but i think these guys are undeniably talented in regards to their musicianship. The drummer and the lead guitarist are amazing.
This will hands down be one of my favorite albums.
I listen to it all the time and is maybe one of the very few full albums I have on my phone.
Disenchanted is a great track to listen to to try and fall asleep. Just stick on repeat on low volume and you’re asleep in minutes.
House of Wolves and The Sharpest Lives are my underrated favorites on this album.
The Black Parade will forever be epic and will always be the song I turn to when I just need to let out some emotions. It’s attached to so many good memories from my childhood.
The End is such a good transition piece into Dead. I love everything about this album.

Kinda agree with the This Is How I Disappear intro drum. It sounds like The Rev playing
Gerard plays 2 different characters in multiple songs & both in songs like Sleep where he's the Patient and then the Parader screaming "WAKE UP!'. You can hear it in The End when it flows from the Patient to the Parader in Dead. The Parader is this particular kid's"Boatman" or guide into the afterlife who's been given some power & has a following on the other side but the Parader has some issues of his own heard in Mama. At the end of Sleep you can hear the Parader goes from talking shit to & having distain for the Patient to showing empathy, gaining respect for his fight,& willing the Patient to live by screaming"WAKE UP!!!" This album is beautiful but when you figure out the different characters it really shows Gerard's brilliance. Without Ray Toro MCR wouldn't be MCR but without Gerard Way they wouldn't be punk rock God's. Gerard Way is a national treasure and should be honored as such for his generational work in not only MCR but Umbrella Academy and the millions of lives he's touched. I met the boys in '04 when I worked at a concert venue and if I hadn't already been a fan after meeting them i would have. Mikey Way was especially a very gracious and extremely appreciative dude. Mikey gave me a hug & told me i was "really sweet". Id given up my bar that night to work the MCR rider backstage so I got to hangout with them a bit. I was kinda shocked as the boys hung out in the actual venue before the show and didn't stay on their bus until curtains. Normally with band's having their success and 3 Cheers had really taken off by then with the Im not ok video in regular circulation by then they'd tend to keep to themselves and stay in the bus or hotel right up until go time. Not MCR. I went in early to set-up their rider and had to run to Publix for a few things but made sure I was back for soundcheck which was fantastic BTW. Me and our "office lady" for lack of a better term (Stephanie & she's AWESOME!!!) & I immediately went backstage after & was very surprised to see the boys still hanging out with Mikey strumming his red bass unplugged. I went to Mikey first to see if they needed anything & just to tell them that I was their guy at the venue if they needed whatever. Mikey was really nice so I took the opportunity to tell him that I was a big fan. He immediately gave me a little half hug and said awww. He then noticed my Silver Surfer themed sleeve on my arm and wanted to show Gerard. Anyway... very cool night and GREAT show I watched from backstage right just behind Ray shredding who was off to the side of Bob's kit. Long live My Chemical Romance ♥️

So, I noticed no one ever mentions the additional tracks after blood. There are three.
I have so many thoughts about this album and have a sort of narrative I’ve been working on about the idea of the two characters of The Patient and The Parader and the immediate view you express about Teenagers being about “join the workforce or join the military” is exactly the interpretation I’ve been going with. Especially with a ton of other war imagery in this album, specifically to The Parader who is ushering The Patient into the afterlife.
There’s a lot of what I feel is surface level interpretation of a school shooting theme and I get that but it doesn’t have the feel of speaking on a single person the way maybe Pumped Up Kicks does. It’s speaking on teenagers as a whole and that there’s often a lot of anger there that can be scary to deal with from the perspective of an adult. I think in relation to the military, when kids go right out of school into war, that anger manifests as “condoned” acts of profound cruelty and violence on a battlefield and it makes them a convenient “cog in the murder machine.”
It’s just always been really interesting and honestly it was kind of awesome to me, personally, to hear your thoughts on Teenagers were along one of the same lines as mine.
I highly highly suggest you listen to the b sides for this album. Three of them could’ve easily replaced the last songs on this album for me. All the angels, Emily, Heaven help us.

27:31- I don’t think that “Wow, good for him” is an appropriate response in this scenario, but I think you just didn’t pick up on it, but I’m pretty positive that this song is from the perspective of a physically abusive and manipulative person lashing out on their partner.
So this has definitely become a highlight on the album for me. Probably my favorite song and I really never thought about it from the perspective of the abuser. I was more seeing it from the perspective of someone in an abusive relationship building up the courage to leave a toxic situation or coming to terms with the fact that the relationship is ending.
But I can totally see it being a tongue in cheek exchange from the abuser as well. I appreciate that perspective!
