      I'm glad to finally have shared in the experience or hearing the band with you! They are incredibly talented and I look forward to checking out the rest of their discography. I do try and keep an open mind even if a bands style is out of my usual listening material. This whole experience is to expand my taste and find new musical inspiration.

    I appreciate that you brought up the drumwork during Helena.
    The first two albums were recorded with a drummer (Matt Pelissier) that left the band after Three Cheers was released.
    A huge loss imo, and the secret ingredient that got me hooked on the first two albums. That drumwork gave MCR a more hectic, vicious, punk-rock twist- which was left behind on their albums after.
    The guy had some amazing machine-gun snare work, and whipped through fills like a gunslinger.
    If you go back to their first album and listen to "This Is The Best Day Ever" the drums on that track are exactly the "gunslinger" sound that I miss.
    For example- on that track at about the 55 second mark, that sort of "stumbling" drum fill is just 😤👌

    Cemetery Drive always gets me when he talks about staring down a loaded gun, since Gerard did in fact do that. The store he worked at got held up, and the only reason Gerard is alive is that the gun jammed. Wild to think about what could have happened to music without MCR.

    Another terrific album from the same year is The Used's "In Love and Death" which also features MCR on a cover of Queen's Under Pressure as a bonus track. @TheKingdomKeyblade1 Год назад +1

      @Luie Plays Drums Sigur Rós are an amazing band from Iceland. Their sound and general song structure is so unique. Think Radiohead if they focused more on their ethereal elements rather than the rock elements. Sigur Rós takes the ethereal sounds and goes insane with them. Also, if you've ever wondered what a bowed guitar sounds like within the context of a song, this is the band!
      If your curiosity is piqued I suggest you begin with one of their most beloved albums called Ágætis byrjun. If you choose to upload the reaction or not, please let me know your thoughts either way!

  • @sp0ngeb00b7
    @sp0ngeb00b7 Год назад +4

    MCR were absolutely pioneers, sure they weren’t the only dudes wearing eyeliner at the time but there was no mish mash of aesthetic and sound as pure and vibrant as theirs amongst their peers. MCR is just to put it simply, very much not an emo band, they are a horror punk band propelled to fame for adopting gothic aesthetics at just the right time. Not to take away from their talent, of course, because they definitely didn’t deserve to be placed amongst cookie cutter pop punk/hardcore peers, I mean you CAN HEAR their musicianship 😅 (don’t get me wrong I love my pop punk, but MCR is very much not the 4 chord breakup band!)
    But singer Gerard Way’s influences lie in classic rock, Queen and Bowie and is a huge Carpenters fan, he and his brother (bassist Mikey) have a great bond over The Smashing Pumpkins, guitarists Frank Iero and Ray Toro are punk fanatics and metalheads, respectively. You can hear Iron Maiden and Misfits and Dead Kennedys and Megadeth all over this stuff, it’s a pure passion project. The Used are compared as they were a sister band and touring pal of MCR, but I’d say My Chem are a closer relative to AFI with The Used’s style of heavier vocals.
    If you get to know Gerard, you’ll learn a few things, including his history as an illustrator/author which led to his comic book career (including Dark Horse’s “The Umbrella Academy”, his own creation which is now a Netflix original 3 seasons deep) and “The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys” which is technically a follow up story to the concept of MCR’s 4th album, written at the same time! You can imagine MCR, just being 4 loveable nerds from New Jersey, does wonders for their concepts and lyrical imagery.
    Now yes. One thing I love about MCR, they also share with another band from “the scene” that I believe deserves tenfold more respect, Pierce The Veil. As a fan of many genres of rock, I adore the DENSITY of MCR’s songs you described, as to me, it makes them feel like shortened prog epics but just all the best bits and no filler! Condensed little bangers that just rip in and rip out, ‘specially on this album. Thank You For The Venom was technically Revenge’s first single, but never received a music video and physical copies are RARE RARE collector’s items, so its amazing to me how it’s remained a staple fan favourite just by its own merit of being a top tier punk track. That riff is nuts, many people compare it to an Avenged Sevenfold track haha! It is one of my single favourite things in the world to share with people and I’m totally getting it inked into my body ASAP!!
    Altho my ADHD brain is super ranty I hope you enjoy some of this info and wanted to let you know you got an instant sub for taking the time to really appreciate the songs, absolutely cannot wait for you to open the can of worms that is The Black Parade!!!

    • @lusciousluie
      @lusciousluie  Год назад +3

      There's definitely a lot of tasteful theatrics that go on in their music. I can tell in Gerard's songwriting that their was much 70's and 80's influence there, Queen being the standout for me. The Used is a band I'm considering reacting to on the channel. I haven't watched Umbrella Academy yet, but hearing that Gerard was the author makes me more excited about watching it! I can see the comparisons to Avenged Sevenfold as there is a lot of sinister but playful themes all across this album. I appreciate you sharing this and will be looking at reacting to Black Parade before the end of the year!

    In my opinion this is their best collection of songs they released. I do think The Black Parade has better themes that run together, and the mixing is second to none. It’s an experience. Hope you get a chance to check that out too!

    If you want ideas for an older band similar to the alt/emo sound, I have one suggestion that I have not seen anyone else do. I haven't even found another fan of this band. It's even takes effort to find videos of them. This band had one of their songs on Guitar Hero III, when it was popular.
    The band is: The Sleeping
    I'm still at a loss for how this band didn't get more recognition.
    They were more of a prog-rock post-hardcore group than emo.
    Would be great to see you (or anyone really) do a reaction to their first album: "Believe What We Tell You"

It’s a straight master piece done by a dope band that I think you would really enjoy. Extremely diverse and technical if you’re a drummer I’m sure you’ll appreciate the entire album like I do. They are a pretty mainstream band in the scene but that album specifically would mean a lot to me and their fans ! Consider it fr !

    AAAA MCR is one of my favorite bands ever, only followed up by Will Wood tbh
    Speaking of, could you possibly check Will Wood (and the Tapeworms) out sometime?
    There are two main projects: "Will Wood and the Tapeworms" and then "Will Wood"
    On WWATT, "Everything Is a Lot" has a good mix between chaotic and slower, but "SELF-iSH" is basically entirely chaotic (excluding the first and last song)
    Moving on to just the Will Wood project, "The Normal Album" is much more mellow and upbeat while "'In case I make it,'" is much slower and folk-like
    Personally, i'd start with "Everything Is a Lot", but "The Normal Album" would be great too!
