True story: the singer started this band after seeing 9/11 happen on his way to work. He had studied to be a comic book artist but it wasn't working out and he was doing miscellaneous art jobs that his heart wasn't in. He was on his way to a meeting with Cartoon Network in NY to pitch a show to them and was waiting across the river for a ferry when he saw the towers fall down. It made him decide to to quit his jobs and start that band he'd always wanted to make, because he said seeing all those people die made him realize how fragile life is and he didn't want to waste it.
This video is very personal to the band as it (and the song) are about the singer/bassist’s grandmother, Elena Way. She was an artist herself, a dancer, and a large supporter of singer Gerard’s ambitions, encouraging him to practice his vocals through choir as a young man. She and the Way brothers weren’t as close when this was being written/before she passed away, so the song is about being frustrated that you weren’t there for someone you loved before they died. Notice “Helena” gets up to dance down the pews her final goodbye, as Elena would’ve :)) The passion in Gerard’s vocals are ever present throughout MCR’s music, but I always found them to be particularly touching here!
I was 16 when this song came out the teenage angst was raw and real when listening to this song. Still one of my favorites I tell my husband I want this played at my funeral.
To add to a previous comment. He did go on to writing comics. And one of the comics he worked on got turned into a big show on Netflix called the umbrella academy. New and final season actually comes out this year. So the boys are from jersey. Lots of people call this Emo music. But it's not really. Sure they have some sad songs... But what artist doesn't? The band got back together like 4 years ago. They've been touring the world. These guys have been my favorite band for 20 years now.
It was nice discovering your channel, it's cool to see people of all ages (especially older, although I'm not so young myself lol) enjoying new music and not being close minded. It's worth noting that on their probably best album 'The Black Parade', among other people mentioned playing with MCR is Liza Minnelli as a backup singer (and her own short part) on the song 'Mama'. I swear she's on another song, but I can't remember which one and she's not credited for the second song.
I was about 13 when this Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (the album this song is from) came out, and this video was the very thing I ever heard or saw by them. I immediately fell in love with it and I've been an MCR mega-fan for about twenty years now. The Black Parade is the more iconic song nowadays, but to this day, when I think "My Chemical Romance," the first thing I think of is this video.
This song is THE song that kickstarted my love for darker, emotional music. Before this it was all poppy stuff. I remember just having Yahoo music videos just playing on random (yea, its that old) and this music video popped up. I was in middle school, I thought it was scary at first.. but it got stuck in my head and I kept going back to it and then tried searched out more songs like it and down the rabbit hole I went. This song basically started my emo phase xD then along came Evanescence, the used, and so on and so on.
Long live My Chemical Romance ♥️. I've actually met the boys way back in '04-'05 when I worked their rider for their show at the venue i worked at. I met quite a few "rock stars" in my time working at The Masquerade in Ybor City. Mikey Way especially was a gracious, appreciative,& just a sweet guy. Mikey gave me multiple hugs throughout the night and was excited to show Gerard my Silver Surfer sleeve I'd gotten done after oif. Gerard Way is a national treasure and truly a great American writer. He not only created MCR,& Umbrella Academy but just came out with another comic about an insane asylum that's truly haunted.
I feel like this could have been in a musical. 😊❤ this came out when I was in my 20s.. Around 2006-2008 ish.. I'm 40 now... Kinda takes me back a bit 😊❤
Great video, you simply must react to The Ghost Of You from My Chemical Romance next, that song and video are both hauntingly beautiful, and I'm your neighbor up north in Kentucky btw.
you should definitely react to the black parade album by these guys its amazing! Another band you should check is Green Day. Listen to these albums if you guys can; Dookie, American Idiot, 21st Century Breakdown, and there newest one Saviors. Good reactions
I hated this crap when it came out. I was born in '74. I was a '90s kid with the grunge and classic rock. I miss this, now. It was memorable. Music sucks today unless you listen to independent artists. At least we have Tom MacDonald.
What's funny is these guys were also 90s kids. They were almost 30 when they released this, and very influenced by classic rock (Bowie and Queen especially).
Hey, we understand. We are experiencing music from genres we wouldn't have listened to before starting this channel, and we are realizing how much music we can really enjoy.
Hey man, as someone who was 1 when this song came out but loves music from the 70s onwards, don’t make the same mistake twice “music sucks today”. There’s so many amazing bands and artists out there right now, the only difference is that the charts are so homogenised and globalised, that so much gold never reaches the top 10. No there’ll never be another MCR or Alice in Chains or Soundgarden, but there’s new gold out there nonetheless!

Wow. Thank you for sharing this with us.
He made that comic book in the end 😁 umbrella academy, which has been made into a tv series.

“I’m the sucker that fell in love with a dead girl”
God i love this song
Thank you for watching with us.
Quick fact. The dead girl who dances is Wade Phillips' daughter. He was coaching the Dallas Cowboys when this came out.
Thank you for sharing this cool fact with us.
Such a random, but equally interesting fact, that I didn't know!
