1:32 1. Make relationships a priority in life.
2:27 2. Remove unnecessary possessions in your life.
2:57 3. Make your work (passion, etc) your job (to pay bills).
3:49 4. See your job as part of your work.
    5:04 5. Guard your time.
5:46 6. Take care of yourself.
6:42 7. We need to appreciate the season of life that we are in.
8:01 8. Accept the reality that there are trials in life. There is no perfect life. In any trial, try to find what's good in it.
9:14 9. Know that you can experience happiness every single day. Happiness is not to be chased after; it should be recognized/discovered in the place where you are right now.

I feel that you were talking to me I lost my husband in July we were married 39 years he was 81 I am 80, I just had knee replacement in October and face another knee replacement in April. So I am not really finding any joy but after listening to you and you have such common sense for a young man it’s help me to look at myself and the reality of my life. It’s not my perfect stage of life by any means I’m trying to find my way I do have a loving family that live a distance away one in Hawaii son and one son in Georgia and I live in Florida. I had thoughts of selling everything and moving to Italy then I would be happy rightBut honestly I don’t have the energy for it, I will have to try harder to find my way thank you for your talk best wishes to your family Jeanne

Joshua, exactly as my husband and I feel, we see so many of our friends and family always trying to get away, and take vacations, or long weekend trips, trying to slow down from their busy, complicated lives.
The pandemic has added such stress to them because they can’t travel and get away, yet my husband and I love being home, and don’t feel the need to escape, we find there is no place like home, we feel serene and peaceful at home. We realized during the last few months, being home, and under quarantine it was just a time to relax and enjoy our home and treat it as a staycation

It’s funny, I never even thought about vacations when I see that quote; my mind always goes to those distractions people use to escape for little amounts of time: gaming, binge watching tv, substance abuse, hours of scrolling social media, etc. Vacations strike me as part of a well rounded life, not an escape from life.

    • @AWanderingEye
      @AWanderingEye 4 года назад +24

Yes! Escape is not exactly confined to 2 weeks on holiday. In my case, it can be letting the chores pile up while doing "other things" then dreading the maintenance of daily living since it is now an overwhelming mountain of mundane tasks. This is where I am, caught in negative feedback loop of procrastination and delay until the doing is unavoidable. Per depression I have learned that I like a clear clean space and I need more time and energy to keep it in place as I age. Minimalism is great for the aging population as it keeps the daily tasks within our growing limitations (that growth can be voluntary as well as involuntary). Ultimately my aim is to make accomplishing those mundane tasks holy, thereby in my example creating a life worth living not requiring escape. An embrace of the mundane, acceptance that it is part and parcel of the whole, integral to the happy contented accomplishment of "keeping it together" in a healthy manner.

I agree yet disagree, it all depends on the person. I know a couple, one had kids, one didn't. They are married. They have to go away every 3 mos., yet we
never hear what they do at home. Josh put it in words, escaping because over there will make them happy. Booze is their friend as well. They'll include
kids if it involves food/booze like a big family party. They don't go to parks to sit or play, or take grandkids, or take a nice walk. Sad, it always involves their happiness.
Walking was a painful therapy after a serious heart issue, so person stopped that. Now, back to the parties, booze..which was what gave person the heart issue.
Sorry, if I sound so judgemental, its just sad, that we could play games etc or relate better but we don't.

P.s. Ashley, I was able to get to the ocean last year w/ spouse and youngest child. It was Heaven on Earth when we got out of our vehicle, and smelled the ocean.
It was beyond happiness to view the ocean, as we approached, and the first hints of hearing the waves roll into the surf. I only wished I used my phone to record the
sound !!! My youngest liked it too. As we turned to leave a few days later, it was hard to say good bye, and I began to walk away, I turned and my
child couldn't turn away from the ocean. Such an exciting life lesson. Thank you, God Bless you Ashley and you too JOSH for all your hard work to share with us !!!!

That has to depend on our idea of "vacation", just before Corona appeared, "vacation" had actually just become another product that was consumed. Experience, and/or rest and recreation seemed to have moved onto other levels, or simply weren't on the plate anymore - that's certainly not true in every case, I'd go with 50% though. See, when people are gaming, watching TV, drink too much, smoke too much, eat too much, spend hours scrolling down social media, at some destination that's not their home, they may have even forgotten what they wanted to escape from. It's a mad world, peeps, n/k.

  • @erakkovaatainen148
    @erakkovaatainen148 4 года назад +8

EXACTLY!!! As a minimalist, like you are Joshua, I am starting to be content with my life. I do not wait vacation, and once received, I travel Finland. I plan to stop traveling abroad for vacations with a pricetag. Today I took a bus to nearest big city to one direction and saw three museums. I mean with street food and tickets included €50 for an amazing day. Weekend in different city with motels can be made for less than 100 daily street food included. Why to wait vacation and airplanes, hotels and stuff. Too expensive week plus wasted hours on airports.
Support local, enjoy return! I see no point in giving VAT to another countries. This way you can return that money for yourself.

It’s not an escape, it’s an enrichment. I don’t need to track my time, as I decluttered anything that was not valuable to me. This way I have a lot of free and flexible time to do the things I love 😉

Psychologists say people need at least one week vacation a year. Many jobs are boring or people are not as fortunate to have a computer or device to listen to this podcast and in the past France and other European Countries had two hour lunches and one or two month vacations. Too much technology and stress today !

We do love to go on vacation and see new places and eat local foods. However, I had thought about taking my husband on an overnight trip soon for our anniversary. I started looking up prices and they just seemed to high. I'm not a minimalist but I've been decluttering and simplifying my life. I realized that our bedroom is always tidy, peaceful, and tastefully decorated. It's nicer than a hotel room. Not as high end, of course. But we love it. We have our hobbies that we enjoy here at home. We already planned to go out for supper. Now if we want we can also go out for breakfast and just stay home and enjoy our peaceful environment.

I like my life. I love my husband, dog and family, our tiny apartment... I like my job. Most days I even love it. Some others are tough, and I remind myself that if jobs were a bliss we would do them for free! And I like my routines except for some small things like running errands when I am tired. BUT I really am looking forward holidays, weekends and vacations. I love travelling, having free time, loose schedules and sleeping without an alarm. So I like my routine and vacationes are a wonderful stimulus

Wonderful video! So spot on. I've traveled a lot as my father was a commercial pilot. Later I traveled on my own. I learned a lot because the traveling was about seeing other cultures and staying away from the tourists spots. Having experienced trials of life and traveling, has molded my life big time.
I returned home to Nova Scotia from where I was adopted in 08. An urge I ignored far too long. I started rebuilding my life and love what I have now. Having been homeless twice, due to trusting the wrong people, having a roof over my head is key and I treasure it with all my heart. But where I live completes the dream. Living in a tiny A Frame cottage overlooking a small lake, in a small town, feeds right into my life as a writer. (under a pen name) Total peace. I'm writing this over a year after you made this video so the pandemic is still raging. I never once felt the need to leave here or felt couped up.
Living a life you don't want to escape from is total liberation. Total peace. Total contentment.

Powerful truths . I have followed a few of these points in my life, but one especially touched me today in a way that I feel is a permanent shift in how I feel and think about a job. I was thinking, “Why couldn’t I have figured this out on my own? Why didn’t someone teach me this earlier?” There is no “Why” There only is what is now. The teacher came when I was ready. Thank you for sharing these important points Joshua.

Thank you Joshua...you hit home for me on so many points. In my 7th decade I've heard and known these things, yet returning to these nuggets I feel like I'm getting them for the first time...or see, feel and hear them more clearly. Coming across your youtube channel is a perfect gift right now. The last year and a half has magnified the realization of how much I'm living with. I've joked with friends that I feel like I'm living in a museum, or second hand store! I listened to another Minimalist podcast recently where they described different styles of hoarding. I felt uncomfortable recognizing I have been living different versions of that, but the one that struck home mostly was the 'organized hoarder'...as I looked around at boxes and cupboards and shelves, the basement and garage and saw previous efforts on my part that made it seem like I had handled the chaos, but in fact had only boxed and labelled and sorted, a sham that gave me questionable temporary satisfaction. This phase I called: 'rearranging the Titanic'. So thanks again for your work, your clarity and practical small steps for new habits. I too love life, and know its time to set myself free of unnecessary clutter.-

(I loved visiting my SIL in Alaska and viewing the birds there, and I even saw a mother moose with her two babies.) Sometimes I plan vacations to coincide with concerts or art exhibits that will be in a different city. I love my life at home where I garden and cook. Traveling doesn't provide an escape from my life, it enhances it.

This was very sage advice; a really compact compendium of wisdom!
We will be constantly unhappy if we have unrealistic expectations of life that cannot be met. As a former Australian prime minister put it: life wasn’t meant to be easy.
As for going on a holiday to escape from your life; this doesn’t work because: wherever you go, there you are.
As for chasing happiness; this too is an exercise in futility, since it is something you have to be open to receive. It is not something you can do or get for yourself, but is something you receive by being attentive to others.
As my mother, who recently passed away aged 99.9 years and had lived through the many vicissitudes of life, used to say:
If joy to others you impart, it will return to your own heart.

Loved Making Change Less Is More but comments were turned off so I couldn't tell you. I didn't know you were a pastor. I loved the incorporation of the word. Loved your videos before but love them even more now. Me and my family are on day 5 of 10 getting rid of 10 things per day and reading the 10 commandments and reviewing each one in depth per day. At the end of our 10 days there will be 600 less things in our home! The kids have embraced it like a game! Thank you for your inspiration.

Alright, I'm only 5 minutes into this video, but I'm pausing it right now to forward it on to my loved ones and sweet friends! Gosh, we all need this! It's funny how just a shift in your mindset can change EVERYTHING! I just told my husband the other day that I realized we can live one day in SOOO many different ways. With a good attitude or with a bad one, being grateful or focusing on the junky things. I know we can't prevent some negative things from happening, but we CAN decide how we'll deal with them and WHAT we'll be mindful to be grateful for! I feel like life doesn't just have to HAPPEN to us... we can be present in it and work to making it more of what brings us joy every day! Thank you very much for this video.

Thank you . I am in the process of decluttering and mostly because of your advise. I realise that I have things in my apartment that I don't even know where they came from. Every week I donate 2 to 4 bags of things I don't use at all. It's coming along but it will take alot more
I realised that I was too ashamed to alow the minister to visit when I was ill , that was the ah ha moment so thanks again for your advise.

This video helped me immensely by helping me rediscover the path I need to be on to continue my journey of living a life of embracing the reality of our imperfect lives. That life is not measured by always trying to analyze the loss, sadness, difficulties and pitfalls of life and the endless search for happiness only to find that it is just a matter of living. It happens to all of us. Your words have really moved me to know after all of these years after losing my mom when I was so young, that I didn't have to piece my world together and to make it perfect so I wouldn't feel loss like that again. You have helped me beyond words. Thank you so much❤

Being home with my husband and 3 girls during March through July has been a gift in many ways. My husband and I start a new school this year, again we are together in the same school. We find our home to always be a place we love coming home to. Slowing down our life made a huge difference.

I came across JB during my search for decluttering inspiration and video. Listening to Joshua has widened my perspective on decluttering and I realise minimalism can be a positive lens through which to view so many aspects of life, nit just possessions. Joshua is very clear balanced in his approach. There is a kindness and understanding underlying his messages. What puzzles non Americans is this - if you have such grounded, clear , intelligent and compassionate individuals there , how did you end up with DT vs JB as your best choices to run your country????

I’ve written your quote “Happiness isn’t something to be chased after, it’s something to recognize and discover in the place that you are right now.” in my Gratitude Journal to reflect upon during this somewhat confusing time . What shape is my life is going to take post pandemic? It’s not clear right now so I’ll remind myself to continue to seek happiness in the moments that are happening today.

Dear Joshua, you are a brother, father, uncle, friend that we all need. I was a flight attendant for many years. I love going places because I can explore, take pictures to post on social media lol. But very quickly, I felt so lonely and realize that my heart is where my parents are. Where my cat is. Where my beloved family is. It felt so lonely to experience new places without having my family to share it with me. I would rush home to be with my cat, and hug my mom and tell my dad how much I loved him. I find so much of peace when I am home, just holding my cat in my arms, the silence, appreciation of time with my loved ones has so much of joy that nothing can be compared. There is so much of peace, and happiness, that strengthens the soul and calms the mind.

After that little bit of fun. DONE! I built some space-saving shelves after removing the dining room set, china cab, chest of drawers, dresser, and nightstand. I then built a cable-supported 75 cm high desk (80 cm X 60 cm) that once disconnected will fall toward the wall downward (most go up), and this then lies flat against the wall. I then built a floating triangular corner cabinet of a half metre each side (70 cm front) that allows the nightstand stuff like a phone, etc. and built in under it another shelf and then a door to close it up. That gives an additional 1 3/4 cu. ft. of space for other required items.
    Thanks for the videos!

I've been thinking about this topic for a while. When I was studying in Hungary, Ioooved my life. I enjoyed walking around the beautiful town and the forest besides it, going to the lake for lunch with my friends, picking cherries during the spring, working out, hell, even going to the supermarket with my roommate was fun. I felt happy every single day. Then my temporary residence expired and with the pandemic I decided to come back to Mexico. A friend asked me why I didn't try my hardest to stay if I liked it so much (my roommate got a job contract and she stayed). But Idk, I told him that even though I was so well in there, I felt it was time to move on to something else. I came to Mexico and it was hard at the beginning (I had been out of the country for 8 years) but now that I have my friends, bf and I'm blessed enough to have a house and the finance stability to just dedicate to whatever I wanna do, I feel that same joy I felt in Hungary. I go to the gym, I don't love selling stuff to make money, but it's not bad and I get lots and lots of free time, I walk a lot around the city (it's a beautiful colonial place), and I'm just good. Buuut, sure, seasons change and I feel like I was feeling in Hungary. I wanna go onto something else. Not because I want to escape this lovely life I have, but because I simply love adventure and to accumulate knowledge. So now I'm preparing myself to go to study to Romania. New culture, new language, another master in a new topic. It's all so exciting, and I'm sure I will love that life just as much as I love this one and the one in Hungary.
All of this just to say, years ago I was escaping (I was a nomad for 3 years after my dreams of living in Serbia were crushed), now I move around as a way to learn and enjoy whatever adventure I get myself into.

A friend of mine is a metal artist. With leftover medallions about the size of a half-dollar coin from her projects she embosses "Look For The Good", and she sells them to add a little cashflow to her art. It's one of the dearest possessions I have, that simple little disc of metal- because every time I look at it, it refocuses my mind for the better.
