Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know that my new book, Things That Matter, is finally here. I put my heart into it, and I can’t wait to share it with you. You can pick up a copy at www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/676394/things-that-matter-by-joshua-becker/
I agreed with my husband not to buy a TV when we got married 13 years ago. 4 kids later, we still don't hve one. Kids go weeks without watching anything. When they do, we watch a documentary or a fun educational show online together as a family. Even our homeschooling is 95% offline. They also play outside daily for hours at a time (rain or shine, just dress for the wather). They play in the rain, make mud sculptures, play with bugs, garden, bike, run, etc. This is the best way to live and we are better for it.
Your children are TRULY BLESSED to have you as their parent! This sounds like my childhood in the late 1960's. Every day was indeed filled with adventure and imagination! I wouldn't swap it for today's 'digital indoor' childhood that I see so many kids trapped in, for anything in the world.

2020 has taught me to be grateful for what I already have in life, to slow down and live a simple and happy life. But most importantly 'Things" can never ever replace people!
Not only television, but any media. Talk Radio, Facebook, Instagram..and yes even Netflix, RUclips, depending on what you watch. Great list to work on. Best wishes to all for the new year!
Best thing I did recently was put a time limit on my phone for Facebook and Instagram at 5 minutes per day each. I used to use them for hours, now I use them a combined hour or less per week. I don’t miss it and after a week felt much more peaceful

Thank you for this list. Every year my husband suggests to me to do 15 minutes of meditation every morning (that would be Christian meditation). This year I'm making the resolution to live moment by moment with a grateful yes for everyone and everything. 😊
All things I’ve been trying to teach my 12 yr old. He thinks I’m a kill joy. But hearing it from you made things sink in a little. With open discussions about why we are choosing the things we choose, my kid is going to have a solid foundation to build his life on. His sister wants to live a minimalist life already, she’s 8. Every parent wants to give their kids what they didn’t have. And this wisdom, to me, is the most important thing I can do.
Thank you Joshua. I have been following you for years and your insight has helped me tremendously. My husband has always been a minimalist mindful person but did not want to pressure me to change. I started changing when I was ready and your website was the first one I found.
Read Fiction. Especially the Classics! I have learned more about parenting and character from the classics than from personal development books. There's something magical about watching fictional characters doing something good that motivates one to positive change, and equally impactful watching a character do wrong and feeling the disdain for such behavior motivates one to remain upright.
I successfully completed 17.5 of my 21 resolutions for 2020, including getting rid of at least 2,020 things. This year’s resolution: Do something fun every day (related to the “be happy” in the video).
This really is one of your best videos. I'm going to take one a month with my family this year. Thank you very much. One thing which significantly improved my happiness and mental health is that I stopped following politics and the news 10 years ago.
I am a millennial and grew up without a tv in the house. At the time my friends all thought my parents were insane. Now I know it was an inspired decision on their part. I read so many books, did crafts, made art, wrote stories, played outside... all better things to do than watching tv :)
I made a resolution to listen to one audiobook a month between driving, cleaning and folding laundry. I've found this practice has been a really life changing.
Such good reminders. I stopped watching TV about 8 weeks ago and it's so refreshing. NOW to get to the exercise part...I know you're right, I will feel better. Thank you for this video ❤️
One of the major ways I "buy" more experiences is by working fewer hours. The time that I'm not working is costing me lost income, so I really am buying that time, but that time is what allows me to have those experiences: taking off a nice day to go kayaking or biking, or taking a weekday trip to an amusement park, or taking a long weekend trip to visit friends out of state. This can be very hard to do for folks who exist in an overworked corporate culture. For example, many Americans only get 2 weeks of paid vacation -- if anything at all -- and many also have budgets that are too stretched to take any unpaid time off. One of the things that minimalism helps with is cutting spending, and once you do that, options open up for working less. Now, it can be a hard conversation to have with an employer because they're so unused to having it. But unpaid time off is not an unreasonable request and a good employer will grant that for a good employee. So, when you get to that point, why not ask your employer for another 2, 4, 6 weeks of unpaid time off each year? It's not for everyone, but it's one way to "buy more experiences" by buying back your time.
Agreed mon ami! This year more than any ever before I've had to implement all of these to keep my mind. This bug I will certainly find was a true blessing! Thanks Joshua!
After having a couple of strokes and being diagnosed with a couple of other health challenges I had to downsize and retire early. Had to learn to be very frugal to make ends meet. I 'choose' to be happy and content. I'm never depressed or lonely. I'm so grateful for my simple, peaceful life. GOD IS GOOD. 💙
Many thanks for these suggestions. I will definitely follow your example of doing gratitudes, play, and choosing happiness. I am a teacher, and we are entering our second lockdown which students and teachers alike find quite challenging. I will be doing daily gratitudes every day with my class and choosing materials designed for laughter. Also, thanks for posting these videos on your channel. I have enjoyed reading your books and watching your videos this past year and am looking forward to new content in 2021. Happy New Year!
Great content! I already do 9 of these (never a bad time to start serving and exercising, right?). This affirms for me why I am happy with my life. Because my smile can't be seen behind a mask I've made a point of telling others I'm happy to see them and of expressing gratitude - saying aloud what a smile is meant to convey. Thanks for posting. I really appreciate how your wisdom has enriched my life.
Always have loved your channel, reassuring me of what I practiced is the right path! Happy , loved, embrace , new year !!! Blessings to you & Family!!!
These suggestions will fulfill and combine the first three, and the second through fourth, if you like to read under the shade tree. Reading is good, but fiction for me is like tv. If you homeschool, a biography or an autobiography are great teachers of history. Other beneficial reading, like Joshua's books, can be chosen according to your interests. Exercise is on my list of rewards when I finish a task. Depending on time allowed and the weather, I want to step outside for air, take deep breaths, and either go for a walk or do an outdoor task with a time limit. Sweep or shovel the deck, the walk, and the driveway; or rake up a pile or two of leaves; weed a flowerbed or potted plant and water any or all of the plants. I have found that weeds are easier to pull out with their shallow roots if the soil is wet, so water first.
I hadn't read much fiction, or novels-stories in my past. After something lite up inside me when he talked about reading fiction, I want to a local library, found a novel to "try" and ended up loving it! 💕📖 I was completely surprised by the change I could feel in me once I began., from the first day, a settling, and relief of some stress! I set my alarm to 30 minutes of reading, along with tea or coffee, and it was wonderful! It's like I could get away on a mini-vacation "escape" during that quiet "private" time, for myself. Also his mentioning getting outside-I'll read outside if I can. I'm in an apartment, but there is a bench that I have been able to sit on to read. ❤❤📖📖Anyone not used to this, I highly recommend the reading a novel-fiction- for yourself, daily if possible. Once you start, I think you'll covet that time and experience, and want to it daily, or as often as you can. A couple days ago I stayed out for ~1.5 hours reading, which is something I've never done in my life before!
We don't have a TV, and most people look at us like we are crazy. My parents have 4 TV's in their home 🤦🤦🤦🤦. I love movies and TV shows, I worked in the film industry for almost 15 years and I don't think that people need to have a TV and hundreds of channels, there is so much bad TV out there 😜😜😜😜😜. Be intentional with what you watch. I like to read both fiction and nonfiction and I am a big fan of walking and listening to audiobooks, this morning after dropping my daughter off at school I went on a walk and listened to a book. I have also stopped making excuses to not go for my walk, rain, shine, cold weather, dress appropriately and just get outside.😊
I only own TVs (2, both bought used) to watch occasional live sports, movies/documentaries with my girlfriend, or play video games - but all that time is scheduled and intentional. Video games have been my favorite hobby nearly my entire life, so I’ll never give them up, but I also only play a few hours a week nowadays, and I only ever play games that make me feel relaxed and give me a good story.
