Custom iPods by Elite Obsolete: eoe.works
I remember one of these being the grand prize at a charity raffle at (I think) my younger brother's school.
Powermat doesn't make consumer products anymore but they developed a lot of the fundamentals of wireless charging technology and own a bunch of patents for it; I believe they get a royalty for every set of Airpods sold.
So they embody the saying “ they’re a little confused, but they got the spirit”
@@popenieafantome9527 They're not confused. Awesome ideas, terrible execution.

My uni is partnered with this company, and they genuinely do make good wireless charging things. Our library has them built into the desks. All you have to do is set your phone on the table and it starts to charge. It’s honestly great for when you’re working on something. In this case I think they were looking ahead to the future before the technology was ready lol
so what's the uni, and where do I buy that table?

"energy saving" wireless transmission needs even more power than cable based charging because it's inefficient as heck
See, I would like it for in my car. That with wireless Android Auto (my deck should do it, technically, it has all the hardware just needs a reflash) and I'd have a wireless system that charges
@@sand0decker well, I admit there are usecases for it like cars, or imagine they had charging pads integrated in the tables inside trains,
But most people use them at home and , there are even people which strap a wireless charger to the phone using rubber bands instead of just plugging it in xP
@c6amp I've heard of this practice before, I understand the reasoning but with type c for example the ports lifetime should exceed the phones life anyways
@c6amp I actually have a Samsung Galaxy S7 with a usb type b port that is so loose that it's very difficult to charge it. Also the aux port is worn to the point that aux cables fall out 😩.. still works like a charm tho 😉😄😄😄🤬

You say “Generic Technology Sound” but I had a version of this made specifically for the 3GS back when that was still cutting edge, and i used to take my phone off and put it back on just for the noise. I worked at a certain big box electronics retailer when this came out. We got a HUGE shipment for the holiday season that year... and sold almost none of them. We ended the season with a bulk bin of these three-quarters full and several returns. People complained it required too much precision to get it to charge, if they didn’t get it in just the right spot it didn’t work. Nothing like getting yelled at for something you didn’t design.
I’m new to this channel and I’m loving it. I sold these when I worked at Radio Shack. A lot of the things on your channel was something I sold at some point 😂

I got one for these for Christmas in 2010. One of the coolest pieces of tech I’d ever had. It was pretty amazing for its time
The thing that makes this channel unique is that nobody else reviews just iPods and I love it
I like how it is actually more effort to plug it in because you have to plug it into dads disneyland and then actually put it on the thing
Until I can wirelessly charge my phone from 10 meters away, I ain't going wireless. I need to watch twenty of these videos before bed after all.
- Wireless charging requires more power to charge the same amount, since they are less effective.
- If you have a wireless charger that can only charge on device; instead of having the cable plugged into the charger, plug it straight into your phone; faster charging, less waste of energy.
- The common argument for why wires are annoying, is because you have to plug and unplug it from the wall ... just don't unplug it from the wall then. "But I need the cable with me"; just buy a second cable. You spend all that money on the charging pad; you could have spent that on several cables instead.
@@Liggliluff but there's also the famous argument of. "But if the cord is plugged in it's wasting power".
@@kyraptor2521 isn't wireless just gonna spread energy on a whole direction of where your phone is supposed to be? Atleast wires does it directly without spilling, it's like filling a bucket with a spray hose vs a normal hose
@@r4hsn18 im pretty sure there's some ways to prevent this with magnetic fields locking or something somehow, im not sure i did it as my filan school project lol
its still really inefficient though
@@kyraptor2521 The worst part about people using this as an argument for anything is that the leads on the cord are airgapped at the end, it's wasting no more power than the outlet itself is. These people probably also avoid touching any wire for fear of electrocution, even ones that aren't attached to anything.
I actually owned one of these for my iPhone 3GS, and the case that attached to the iPhone had a huge rectangular protruded plastic piece on the back of the case that defeated the whole purpose of "wireless" in 2009, because it became 2x heavier. To all those who wanted to know, it had a magnetic snap-on mechanism that was shown in the video that positioned the device on the right location of the mat which was followed by the swirl sound.
I cannot get enough of your personality. These videos are addictingly interesting, and I've now purchased an iPod Video 5.5g that I plan to flashmod and diyMod. Thanks for dragging me into this obsession as well.

He would have to make a new back because wireless charging can't go through metal

I have never seen a more Australian looking backyard in my life

@@Theta117 With how often people insult Apple products where it doesn't apply, I believe I can understand his frustration. Don't get me wrong, Apple is a very frustrating company in a lot of ways, and in my opinion has an overall not-nice business practice. But there's some of their products that people do misunderstand/misrepresent certain products of theirs for the sake of insulting either Apple or its users. And I do believe it's understandable in regards to how unfair that may feel.
@@L7vanmatre I mean their products deserve all the hate they get anyway. Even if it's in bad practice. They shouldn't have the hold on the market like they do and anything that takes that from them is good imo.

1 grit is simply always the perfect solution..
I remember liking the idea of that at the time but deciding it wasn’t worth it unless they started building it into the device instead of using special shells.
I was so glad when that happened

Actually, this is the video that got me into the channel.
This is some of the greatest stuff on RUclips. I laugh so hard during your vids
the part that you missed is they sold phone specific battery covers that would convert the phone to wireless charging and you could use it with the power mat. When everyone went to non removable batteries you could no longer get the conversion kits. Also they were kind of pricey so it was a tough sell.
I've never used one, owned one, but everytime when i see dankpods ipod video, I'm like🤩🤩🤩
You do understand that and 2009 they didn't have the receiver built into every device like they have to day so your phone would have to have a back pack case to receive the power and you need the charging dock to receive the power but at least it got rid of the chords even if you needed a docking station. Or maybe you don't understand how the system works. You could add "not bad for the time" to the end, instead of tossing it out the window.
Just found this channel and I got some tech content and a good laugh. Keep it up and +1 sub!

This company was bought by Duracell a couple years later. I used to have one of these mats and a phone case for iPhone 4, and the little charging brick which was a power bank that charged from it. It was amazing. I loved it so much. And it made a little noise when you put it to charge.
I just love this guy, always waiting for his next videos!!!.

Dude, I remember seeing these in JB Hi-Fi back in the their heyday for a good $150+. I just remember thinking "who the hell would spend that much just so they didn't have to use CORDED charging?"
In 2020, I now realise how much of a pleb I was.
I remember seeing a big display for this at a computer store when I was a kid. They even had a spokeswoman from the company there too. Even back then I didn't get the point, it just adds another step after plugging the wire into the device (or using a super bulky case on already bulky 2000s electronics)
Here in Canada, they sold those for years. Eventually one of my friends got the DS lite battery adapter, it was futuristic to drop the console onto the charger before bed ! But it bulked up the DS quit a bit... Awesome throwback !
Bro my family had this exact same thing! I had a case for my IPod touch that you could just throw on the mat and it worked as well as the wall. Thank you for the throwback.
Two days of watching this man's channel and I'm on ebay buying parts to fix my 5th gen ipod video. Well done, good sir.

Me: Mom, can we have AirPower?

The AirPower at home is actually better because it exists
Ooh I worked at The Source when these were being sold! There was a wall of powermat compatible cases (think Otterbox but less skookum) for the most popular handheld devices. The gimmick was you had to have a powermat mat AND case on your device to be able to charge and the cases were absurdly expensive for what they were, AND rather bulky.
That and as the number of devices constantly grew so did the wall space for all the powermat accessories / cases. Eventually it got too much and it turned into "you can order it in" which I never had anybody do. Finally we just stopped stocking any PowerMat stuff in store because, frankly, nearly everyone who expressed interest in one, at least at my store, swiftly lost interest when they learned they would need a case for their phone to allow it to be powermat compatible.
Also, early power mats were PMA, not Qi compatible, so when the iPhone and Samsung phones started having wireless charging built in consumers looked for charging mats that would work natively, without the extra accessories. Eventually the PMA standard got mothballed and Qi won out.
I remember these actually. My recollection is that they also sold these enormous cases that you'd entomb your ipod, ds, phone, etc into and use those to charge

I remember having the 2 device model of this as a teenager, it sounded MUCH cooler than it actually was. I had one of those little ipod stands for my ipod touch, and another puck with a tiny micro usb cable running off of it for my android cell phone because they only made wireless charge cases for the iphone models at that time. Its funny you note how sharp the edges are on the power brick, i used to run my fingers over the edge constantly, as well as constantly making that generic charge bloop noise every time you put something on the pad or took it off.

My dad used to own one of this when I was a kid! I remembered it was so cool and futuristic back then, and this video bring so much nostalgia lol! My dad was so into this thing that he bought almost every accessories that comes with it! Lol there was a charging pad thing with multiple types charge for different types of device, so u can connect it with the power mat! I thought it the first "wireless charging" technology, and for a serious amount of time other big companies like Samsung, HTC, Huawei... introduce the wireless charging and I was like.... wait.... this was like 10 years ago nothing new why they introduce it now!
