    • @MacPhantom
      @MacPhantom 8 месяцев назад

      @@jacosta5580 Exactly. It won't happen. The popularity of iPods (and high-quality audio players) is near zero, despite what this video claims.
      Also, we'll never see the headphone jack back in portables, because this would affect one of the biggest lies and scams in modern consumer audio tech: the abominable "true wireless earphone" craze, also invented by Apple with the AirPods. It's a scam for two reasons: on the one hand, Apple officially claimed "innovation" and "better audio quality" as reasons for dropping the headphone jack from iPhones (both are just lies). On the other, and even worse, those bluetooth earbuds are throwaway consumer waste, with non-replaceable batteries, requiring pennies to produce and sold at an unbelievable profit margin. You just don't make good profit with high-quality stuff, especially now that everything is mainstream-commercialised. True wireless earbuds are the cheap and nasty way out of this, and thanks to brilliant marketing, consumers fall for it.

    I think it's for the same reason why we buy Kindles; no distractions and it is simple to use. I recently purchased my first Kindle Paper White, which changed my reading experience. The iPod changes the listening experience. I wish Apple would just bring it back here in 2024. I want to add something, though. It's not a protest for me; I love AI and all of the new stuff, and I love where we are going with advancing tech, and I am excited about it, but as an 80s kid, I love the retro stuff as well.

Granted my smartphone is a few years old, but even when it was new if I used it for more than making phone calls and texting it would be a significant hit on the battery life. Meanwhile, with my digital audio player (Sony Walkman NW-A55) I usually have more than a day of playtime unless I use Bluetooth, which is a significant drain on the battery. Plus, with a MicroSD card and internal memory I can carry about 250gb of files on my player.

    Great video. Another reason I'd add-people don't like relying on streaming subscriptions for music, where legal battles can remove your music at any time, they can change the terms of the service or raise the price, and you have to keep paying forever or else lose your music. It's much nicer to have a local collection of CDs and/or MP3s, and iPods are perfect for listening to your own permanent, curated library.

    #6 The audio quality is better. I have a Bluetooth receiver connected to my 1979 Yamaha Hi Fi and I was streaming from my phone and not happy with the audio quality. 2 things acted to reduce the overall listening enjoyment 1) the DAC in the iPhone and 2) Bluetooth itself. Then only just this weekend I remembered the long forgotten iPod Gen 5 Classic sitting in the bottom draw. Haven't used it for years. I dragged it out and charged it. It accepted charge so I connected it via the RCA line in to the headphone jack and voila! Music sounded infinitely better than the phone - almost as good as vinyl only easier as I don't have to get up and change sides every 6 songs or so! So def audio quality should be on your list.

    I ordered an mp3 player online cause I'm sick of getting ads on spotify and also because during school trips, i tend to listen to music in the bus but by the time I arrive to the destination my phone's battery basically gets halved. So I got it to prevent that as well.
    I'm a late gen z, born in 2007 so most ipods are older than me. I never had an mp3 player as a kid but I had friends with strict parents who got one before they had a phone. I find mp3 players very fascinating as I've always associated playing media with smartphones or computers, you know, expensive devices. I just find it so cool that a pretty cheap device can do all of that. It's a new world for me and I like it.

      As a kid, I grew up using CD players that had a headphone Jack, and was able to play about 13 songs on a full released CD, and about 25 songs on one burned CD-R/CD+RW/CD+R. It wasn't until 2010 that I started using Zune devices, and then ten years later I was given my older brother's iPhone, and since then, considering that the iPhone ends up using so much battery, I just rather use a laptop or a device that I can include WAV files into my Zune rather than convert it into HQ 320Kbps MP3s instead.

    I would add even the "right to own your music" since now we are in a streaming era as well where if you have a niche you follow as artist it can bump around different services or not be available anymore straight up so the cost monthly to keep even just tidal and Spotify for example can be as buying 2 albums per month, which is not much at the beginning but if you keep doing that you can build an incredibly big library of music that you actually own from the digital files and will never be taken from you

      It's most likely that on Spotify, I have had recordings on both Screenflow AND OBS, and I can guarantee you the screenflow and OBS recordings are basically digital copies of my own recordings of how I recorded the screen. Most of the music I've screen recorded through OBS or Screenflow, the visual is only there if I need to know what the title, artist, and album of the song it's currently playing, but it's the audio that's most important.

    The further I go on a journey similar to yours, Spencer, I find myself increasingly drawn to and recommending to others the virtues of single use devices. Like with people, things that try to be everything and do anything scarcely excel at any one thing. Purpose built devices that do what they do well with no extra padding or strings attached are awesome. As to people who keep harping on the willpower issue, quite frankly I put smart phone usage in a similar category as addiction to other vices like alcohol. It's really easy to sit back and tell someone to just have more willpower and more control, but when you're constantly exposed to devices that are intentionally meant to be addictive, and there is peer and societal pressure to use them all the time, sometimes the best solution truly is to remove the temptation entirely. Smart.

      I agree that Apple made a mistake when they discontinued the iPod Classic. When they did that they had the corner on the high-capacity digital music player market because no player had 160gb of storage. Unfortunately for Apple the other manufacturers stepped up and matched/exceeded the storage capacity. On my player, I added a MicroSD card and had 250gb of storage.
      If Apple was to bring back the iPod Classic , I'd like to see the following: (1) keep it the same size, (2) replace the hard drive with storage via MicroSD cards, and (3) to extend the battery life replace the current screen (which consumes a lot of power) with an LCD screen like with the early iPods.

    For Apple Ipods the weak link is iTunes. Not just it's flakiness in restoring the firmware, but it's terrible dB based music library and dependence on a single iTunes install for keeping the music library in sync. Rockbox is the way to go. Just copy lossless flacs to the iPod via file explorer and you get the benefit of highest quality music with very comprehensive sound controls and dynamic play lists.

    • @Solitaire001
      @Solitaire001 21 день назад

      That is one of the main reasons I stopped using my iPod Classic: Mandated software. I didn't like iTunes for reason such as extremely limited appearance adjustments (I found the color scheme of iTunes to be extremely glaring and hard to look at for long periods of time). I used it mainly because so that I could use all of the features on my iPod (such as keeping track of the number of times a song was played), and also maintain the software on my player. It also did a good job of syncing with my music library. I once tried to sync my iPod with MediaMonkey and after several hours it still wasn't finished and I ended up having to give up on using it with my iPod. Although I considered trying Rockbox I didn't feel confident that I could properly install it and might brick my iPod.

I have a supply of 30-40 at any given time and keep them in the car, at work, at home, etc. When one goes bad (and they occasionally do and cannot be restored) i just toss it. iTunes has most every Lp I could want, from classical to mid-60's punk psych to Amyl and The Sniffers to 1920's jazz, so I don't miss out on anything. I also use various docking stations like the Numark iDEC, Peavey and others to play directly through a PA system or home stereo. I agree that playing stuff on your phone is a pain, and just ties you up with other nonsense.
