Seeing my fav pod at a D stings a little but fair enough as it was the first "cheap" full sized iPod, worse screen than the 3G with less stuff included. At least it charged over USB!

Up until the iPod was finally cancelled, I always wished that Apple did one last hurrah for the Classic. Stick an SSD in it, give it an absolute tonne of storage, a great DAC, and make it a bit of a celebration of everything the iPod was. The Classic had a pretty big cult following towards the end of the iPod’s life and I’m kinda surprised they didn’t do something like this. Wouldn’t have sold tonnes but I feel like it would’ve made a lot of people very happy.
I also had a 3rd gen nano. Amazing iPod and still one of my favourite ever Apple products (but my M1 Air is king).

I would buy that today. Make it industry leader in sound quality, give it a shit load of battery life, throw a little oled display on it, and terabyte at minimum. Market to audiophiles, DJs, and ipod cult nostalgists. I have always wanted a modern ipod just to keep in my car as a mini jukebox and when traveling (especially flights and overseas) where streaming is useless. Also would prevent me from wasting storage on music on my phone

The first time I saw the low battery screen is a memory that is forever implanted into my brain: it was this white screen with (I think) two yellow danger icons (⚠️) and low battery icon in the middle with big text saying “LOW BATTERY. I remember I bought an iPod touch 4th generation in a trip to the US in 2011. It was so far ahead of the flip phones of that era that it stunned me and a lot of friends from high school asked me to play games in that between classes. A few years after that the smartphone revolution swiped through, but the iPod touch will always be the device that blew my mind on what would become commonplace in the future.

I loved the 4th generation Nano marketing as a kid. I thought the rainbow barf was such a unique way of advertising it. My funny story with it is that my middle school did a lot of art projects with students and the teacher on the walls around the time I went there, so there’s a mural of 4th gen Nanos by the office. It’s also right by a bunch of “self portraits” students did right before I got there, so around 2008-2009. And they’re all memes and stuff that was relevant at that time. So my middle school hallways are stuck in the mid-late 2000s 😂

Thank you for rating my first and favorite iPod well ❤ (The Nano 5th Generation). As I was in my early teen years when I picked up this iPod second hand I fell in love with it for the amazing finish of the colors of the iPod, the built in speaker for playing back music (didn’t sound great over the speaker but it was still nice to have) and playing back audio from the videos I shot on it as I have lots of videos I filmed and backed up to my PC as that was my only video camera I owned. Cover flow was amazing and I loved it so much I even paid a developer to create a jailbreak tweak called “CoverFlowM” to bring it back to iOS after it was removed on iOS 8.4 and still use it to this day on my iPhone 11 Pro on iOS 14.8.
As far as the Nano 7th Generation I personally would have rated it a little better as I love the colors offered with it as well and like the fact that there was at least one iPod that wasn’t an online based device that had Bluetooth included! I love using it in the car and using the center click button between the volume up and down to skip forward and back tracks without needing to look down.
Overall great video and I don’t really disagree with much else as far as rankings (:

i have a 7th gen nano and while it is disappointing compared to earlier iPods it is good enough, it did come standard with 16gb which was nice but that was the only capacity. also something great about most iPods is that in BMW cars and cars made by BMW like MINI it has great software support in the sense that you can plug your iPod in and control it from the car, you can even individually browse songs and playlists.

I loved that thing though, I wish I could go back and play some of those games, unfortunately stuck on 32bit app store. I don't remember having to pay for IOS updates, is that true? Edit: wow you did have to pay, i'm guessing mine came preinstalled with IOS 2 and then I never updated it because I already had the app store.

5.5 gen iPod was the last iPod I think to feature a Wolfson DAC which is important if you miss the warm sound of the earlier models, and the .5 upgrade gave it a search function and I think more RAM. It's what I use regularly now with 512GB solid state storage installed, and like you I had a 3G iPod that I used from 2003 to at least 2015, with an upgraded 80GB drive installed. It couldn't sync over FW400 anymore after the upgrade and I tried to find some firmware fix but never could. The HDD broke sometime in 2016 or so but I still have it.

The iPod Touch 4 still had a TN panel compared to the iPhone 4's IPS panel which looked night and day next to each other. It also only has 256mb of ram compared to the iPhone's 512mb, which is why it didn't get iOS 7. Considering the iPhone 4 barely ran iOS 7, I can't imagine how bad that would be with half the amount of ram.

My favorite is the one I bought in 2014 and still use every now and then: iPod Classic 160 Gb. I like having songs on device so I know I can listen to them whenever I want. So many of my favorite songs have disappeared from Spotify and Apple Music and Tidal and Amazon Music and Deezer and elsewhere over the years when I have been subscribed to those services. But when song is on my iPod Classic it’s not disappearing anywhere.

It also won't skip, because it's entirely solid state. I could have just gotten one of the last gen iPod Touch models, but what's the fun in that?

My first and only Apple product I had was an Ipod Nano 1st gen. I was so dissappointed when I realized the only way to fill it with songs is using the Itunes. For someone that was and is still today using mp3s on my Android phones this was such a waste of money. BUT then my friend told me about the Rockbox mod and it turned my Ipod into a beast which I used for many many years.

-Last year I bought and flash modded Mini to use as my daily for in my truck. All in for like $40-50 excluding a micro SD card I had kicking around.
-One interesting thing about the 1st vs 2nd Mini, 1st gen can be flash modded up to 128GB but 2nd can go up to 256GB, I think it has to do with more RAM in the 2nd
-I still have my 6th gen 80GB Classic (flash modded to 128GB) as well, use that for travel since I don't want to daily it and leave it in my truck or at work. I guess I'm not discerning enough to tell, I never knew there was an issue with the DAC in it.

The 3rd gen iPod Shuffle is great if you have a compatible aux cable. It's the only iPod Shuffle that had a 4GB option.
I would also like to add that there were 3 versions of the metal faceplate iPod Classic. 2007 80/160, 2008 120, and 2009 160. The difference between the 2008 and 2009 versions might seem negligible, but it's not negligible to modders! The 2009 160GB model is the only one that can be modded with more than 128GB of flash storage (yes, even the 2007 160GB model doesn't support 160GB flash storage).

About the 6th/7th gen classics, I could be mistaking some details but apparently the crappier 6 gen came in both 80gb and 160gb capacity, whereas the better 7 gen (or revisioned 6 gen I guess) was available in 120gb and 160gb. Some sources I see refer to the 120gb as 6.5 gen lol; It's a lil convoluted as there is no true official generational distinction attached to the models by Apple.
I got a 160gb 7 gen from the apple store mere months before it was discontinued circa 2014? And my main gripe was I preferred the true black shell of the 6 gen vs the space gray shell of the 7 gen that I got, plus the 6 was a lil chunkier which I found cuter 😅 in hindsight I'm glad I didn't get the 6 gen if it truly had those issues. I still use my 7gen today.
I also feel vindicated that anyone else loves the 3rd gen nano, it's my fav.

One interesting thing about the 4th gen iPod Touch is that even though it had the same resolution as the iPhone 4, it had a TN display instead of an IPS, so the display looked quite a bit worse.

  • @FLTech

First of all: great video! But I have to say that the touch 1 hasn't aged badly at all (except that you need a PhD to open iTunes without it crashing), and everything runs very smoothly on iOS 3, the touch 4 or especially the touch 5 run much worse today. AppStore, Weather and Mail were also added via software update (although I understand iPods are ranked from a launch perspective). I use mine almost every day.
I would also disagree with the Shuffle 1 because, like the Shuffle 2, unlike the Shuffle 3 and 4, it does not support podcasts.
I have to say about the touch 2 that it was a huge update compared to the touch 1. Not only speakers and Bluetooth, but also mundane things like a volume rocker have been added here, which is why I think it should be ranked as high as the touch 1. Interestingly, iOS 4 that runs on the touch 2 is the only iOS version up to iOS 7 on which the iTunes store is still fully functional today.
My rating is of course much more based on today's perspective and I'm not an audiophile either and hardly even rate sound quality.
