Watching the wedding at this moment. Helen and Dad are walking up to the Church. I'm a 64yo guy, w/tears in my eyes.
Very happy to finally have gotten to this scene.

This was a great episode.. Loved how the groom was given a yard of ale... Then woke up in a barn, had to rush to get to the church for his wedding and only had his wellies to wear until his FATHER lent him his shoes... The plot twist with the DOG swallowing the wedding rings was priceless.... If anything can possibly go wrong on your wedding day .. Let them be solved so HAPPILY.

This simple wedding was a huge relief after the utterly grim facial expressions on Helen & her father in the car headed to the other wedding to Hugh. They looked like they were in one of those odd old tales where a father has to sacrifice his virgin daughter for the sake of the family or tribe and she has known forever that this is her fate to comply with for those she loves.

Why so few at the wedding?!

I wondered that as well, it seemed strange, and the show didn't explain it. BUT - in one of the show-adjacent specials, Jim Wight (Alf's son) said that there really were only about four people at his parents' wedding! (Donald Sinclair (Siegfried) was best man, apparently, and I think that his mother, Joan was 'given away' by her boss!) I'm not quite sure exactly why there were so few people there - I didn't think that wartime was a factor, but maybe. Could just be that it happened quickly, and people couldn't get away, or that they were just simple people who weren't interested in making a fuss. I really don't know!
But I do love that this version of the show is trying to be 'true-to-life' - it's bringing in elements of the story of the 'real people' behind the book characters. So, whenever someone complains that 'it's not following the books' - well, hold on a minute. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but if it isn't, perhaps that's a point where it's following a bit of real life, instead. Jim Wight has said that his father would really like what they've done with this version, and I agree.

Was more than a tad weird and unrealistic IMHO that more people didn't get invited to the wedding...they couldn't have saved that much money by not having extras. The whole village/environs would have wanted to be there. Seigfried and Tristan are my favorites...characters and actors. I've read all versions of the stories many times over the decades and I just don't think they got the writing right with James. In real life, Alfred Wight (pen name James Herriot) was a pretty funny, witty, and occasionally even somewhat quirky guy.

Just reposting here what I replied to someone else above:

So actually - it couldn't have been MORE realistic! 😄 I'm not quite sure exactly why there were so few people there - I didn't think that wartime was a factor, but maybe. @@flippetskater Thx for the feedback. Sounds right. Jim Wight's book is great too. As I've said, the main thing that's missing in the series IMO is that Alf's brilliant sense of humor that is a major part of his writing gets mostly missed. I think the only way they could really make it as major a part in the show as it is in his writing would be to have him serve as a narrator as well as the main character.

It is not even 20% of the old series. That series had some true warmth, real humour and so on. This one is just acting it all rather than characters being their character. Tristan....where is his naughtyness. This guy just doesn't know what the word means. RObert Hardy as Siegdried was also a very strong actor and character. Chris Timothy was probably the worst of the bunch, but still okey and Carol Drinkwater could not be missed. Afdter she left and the stories were all used up (both at the end of season3) the series fell apart. This one is the typical too smooth, lacking fantasy and humour we are getting serverd all too often in the 21st century if you ask me.

Did you notice Tris to his brother about James, "his sense of duty will be the death of him'?
WWII looming, James will be off to war.

Too bad they didn't make it a double. Siegfried and Mrs Hall making it official would have made it an absolutely perfect day .

We are loving this show so much. I grew up on the farm in Illinois in the 50s and can relate to so much, but the writing and the acting is simply excellent. On par with Midwives and those wonderful videos. These Characters take you to a place that is so enjoyable and happy, we look forward to Sunday night every week. Thank You, Dennis & Margaret
