I am 71 years old, just started 18/6 in mid-February, cut out sugar and very limited carbo intake. I am an avid cyclist doing about 50 miles twice a week, additionally I do rowing machine and stationary bike on the days I am not cycling outside. My weight dropped unintentionally from 162 lbs to 150, I am still cycling with the same routine. Here’s the thing, during the days I go cycling without stopping for lunch I don’t feel hungry, instead I feel a continuous supply of energy from within. What a great discovery of ketone power and intermittent fasting!

After my first 3-weeks keto, my blood ketones were only 0.2 - 0.3 (I was prediabetic and insulin resistant). So I supplemented daily with both MCT and BHB for 2-weeks. After than, my morning (unsupplemented) ketone levels rose to 0.8 - 1.0. I've heard that getting the body to make ketones doesn't take too long (days), but getting your body to fully utilize them as fuel takes longer (weeks). Adding the supplements for a brief period getting started is like adding kindling to get a log burning, then once the fire is burning it will sustain itself.

Thanks, Dr. Ekberg, for another brilliant explanation of MCT Oils and how our bodies work! This week it is exactly 1 year since I started my journey adopting a LCHF lifestyle and dropping my BMI from 40 to 23.5 by only changing my diet. I have since started going to the gym and allowed myself to increase my protein and carb intake with the objective to gain some muscle mass to increase my metabolism. I'm pretty impressed that I (58yrs) is able to keep up my gains my 16 year old son and I'm actually sculpting muscles! My strength has increased on average 35% over 12 weeks. I gained approx 5kg and even if this isn't all muscles I haven't been too worried about that. I did let myself go over the holidays not restricting carbs for 14 days eating all the commercialised Christmas junk... I have previously only allowed myself only 1 "carb day" per week so this has been a bit of an experiment on myself to learn more about how my body works. To no surprise I have gained another 5kg! So this video couldn't have come better timed for me. As I returned to carbs I found myself always hungry and snacking a lot! Also very difficult to control how much I eat as I don't seem to get satisfied on carbs! It is truly like the hormones that regulates ones hunger doesn't work! Now after a 48hr fast and 3 days of Keto I'm back on track, all the hunger and cravings are gone like magic! Last year when I discovered how easy it actually was for me to lose weight I targeted losing 50kg. This year I'll be discovering the gym so it's going to be interesting to see where this journey takes me!

Thanks! I've been wondering about this, and about if MCT oil gives a sort of false sense of ketosis insofar as the boosted numbers aren't a result of the body burning fat. Going forward I'm only going to use it on the days I need to boost my energy. Thanks again for always giving us thorough explanations of how things work. I watch a couple of other channels for this content, but yours was the first and also my favorite.

Extended fasting worked well for me. I found it easier than intermittent fasting, when I was getting started. You DO have to get over the addiction hump for the first few days. I did this before I went keto, but I couldn't keep the weight off until I went keto in between fasts. After losing most of the fat, extended fasts are only occasional and not nearly as long (two-to-three weeks then.)

Thank you doctor! Thank you for explaining what I have been saying since the mid 80s when I worked with the ketogenic diet as a nurse. Learn to teach your body to make its own ketones by earning its own fat instead of taking exogenous ketones which has become, in my opinion, a sales gimmick.
Thank you for your excellent presentation and ability to relay information❗️

Just break your fast with what you normally eat which on Keto is low carb and higher fat (now I prefer unsaturated from nuts and avocado etc, instead of saturated from meats and butter)

I just started keto yesterday and I’m definitely in the keto flu phase. But that’s ok.
Because I’m perimenopausal, just low carb wasn’t cutting this new weight that is fighting to accumulate. I’m already an apple shape so I really have to fight extra weight around my middle.
I just purchased some MCT for coffee (vanilla flavored) in leu of cream and it helped me enjoy black coffee.
I’m just glad that something is working during this flu process because low carb is no match against malicious, female hormones! 😉
I needed to being out the big guns with keto and IF.
Oh, I hope it works! 🤞🏼

This is super helpful. Very well explained and presented. Thank you! I've been on a high fat (80/20), low-carb (20 grams of carbs or less) carnivore diet for 5 weeks now, but as 52-year-old woman who is menopausal, insulin resistant, pre-diabetic, and 30 pounds overweight, I've had trouble getting into ketosis, and had trouble losing the fat (4 pounds in 5 weeks). I've done diets like these before when I was younger, and the weight just FELL off of me. Put one teaspoon of MCT oil on my steak this morning (which I ate with a good amount of butter). That was just an hour or so ago, and I can already feel the effects of elevated ketones. It's not showing up yet on my urine ketone test (my understanding is that it takes a couple of hours to show up there), but I feel confident that it will. I'll do another teaspoon of MCT oil this afternoon, and another one this evening. Finally I feel confident that I'm going to get this weight off, lower my blood glucose, and improve my insulin sensitivity, as well as reap all of the associated benefits. Hooray!
