Fake Ridley isn't actually a separate sprite. Every enemy in the NES Metroid game has a boss flag that can be either on or off. Every enemy has a regular and boss form. Fake Kraid was a clever usage of this system.
my favourite password to perform for an audience. any time I'm demonstrating the Metroid password system, I'll end with that one. the crash is just too freaking great. :)
That codes actually just breaks your cartridge or crashes your 3ds if you ever try to put in that code, apparently it sets your game to 3 million hours in game. So that is a bad code
the meltdown that the game has isnt actually from the timeroverflow(even tho that might be why it breaks the 3ds and crashes the switch nintendo online-emulator),but rather from the fact that its location is in tourian and it has the resetflag active. so basicly it just loads you into the startingroom while not being in the actual first level and that happens to be invalid data(i wonder why)
Neat fact about Narpas Sword is it actually gives you all the beams at once, long, ice, and wave. You were only meant to be able to get long and ice or long and wave together (you can actually have wave or ice with short range if you skip the long beam), and having all three results in a beam that uses wave's sprite but otherwise acts like the ice beam.
It only crashes the game. It does cause problems (forcing a hard reset on Virtual Console), but Metroid doesn't have any save battery so it's impossible to do permanent damage to a physical game. It definitely won't brick your system.
Both lies/myths. Especially Virtual Console, which will just crash, sometimes hardlocking the system forcing a manual power off (3DS) and sometimes just exiting with an error code (Switch).
One year late, but for new readers: The people above are correct. The reason it fries the game is that it both has the reset-flag active that returns the player to the starting room, but it is also set to respawn them in tourian. There is no actual nonsense going on except a simple internal gameerror, so it is physically unable to do any harm. No idea why or how it bricked the early 3DS-versions, but yeah.
I never had the chance to say this, but the mega man one that had 6 games, I appreciate that because instead of a 2 minute video, we got a full 6 game lost bits and I have huge respect! Keep on gaming, gamer!
Leaving a comment mostly for your metrics, but I loved the episode! Your videos always show a certain level of professionalism and polish and that's why I keep coming back.
@@OtakuUnitedStudio More than that. He can't move, do damage, attack in any way, he doesn't trigger boss music, no sound effects, and has no death animation (though he technically does die, the sprite just doesn't despawn). Several people have hacked the game to restore Crocomire to full functionality, to mixed success. Trunaur68's Crocomire hack is the most well known, though it's very incomplete still. Interdpth's Crocomire seems a step above, but I haven't seen enough to say for certain, and I don't think he's going to release it until his Fusion hack (ALIE) is out.
5:15 the NARPAS SWORD password Is also believed to just represent "*N*orth *A*merica *R*elease Password," hence "NAR Password." It was likely meant to help the NA translators actually understand what they were playing So there wouldn't be any kind of brutally misunderstood translations which plagued early Mega Man and various other popular NES games such as Zelda and Castlevania.
to further explain, Translators don't bother having to play through the game to try and understand wtf is going on within the confines of 8 bit space. they look at what's presented to them, and if it looks even vaguely like something else, chances are they're going to go for the most basic descriptions to save time and effort. That's why the early Mega Man games were so brutally misunderstood and games like Zelda 2 and Castlevania 2 had obscure af hints. the password was likely so translators could explore the game properly and actually understand how items and mechanics worked without having to throw darts in the darkness and hope they got it marginally right.
narpas sword nar password You decide tho i think nar passord might be it as it could be for North American Release or even Tohru NARihiro password as the video mention
Hope you get better dude and hope the moving goes well. Btw the hat in time you did earlier there is way much more found out like a whole discord deticated to it at this point
The whole thing with using the same sprite for shooting left and right makes sense for an nes game though. Metroid is a pretty large game, so saving as much memory as possible is vital. Edit: Nevermind, you already pointed that out, my bad
It may have still saved some RAM if it wasn't actively loaded, not sure exactly how that was handled on NES. Most likely they removed it planning to save cartridge space but ran out of time and didn't clean it up. They probably didn't have any convenient tools for finding unused data either (I'm not even sure modern SDK's have such a feature).
I misread the title for saying Super Metroid. Hoped to see some proper gameplay footage of the Bang (where the thing doesn't weirdly teleport across the room, so the hitbox of the blast can be looked at properly). But well, M1 it is for now.
I really appreciate that 8-bit Torvus Bog theme Edit: I feel like the password actually stands for "North American Release Password" but idk, I don't think anyone has ever confirmed anything officially
I really wish they had used the left-facing sprite correctly. It seems to have been a mistake on the developer's part. As far as "not making sense", mirrored sprites were extremely common in NES games and most kids never even noticed or, if they did, assumed it was a limitation or didn't think about it at all. Overanalyzing sprites like that wasn't really a thing when I was growing up.
I found out that if you do "debug mode" and go to Tourian with infinite missiles, as soon as you kill a metroid, the game would oddly crash. At least for me, anyway.
@@TheRUclipsGame i just found out why it crashes. If you go into the game with no missiles, Metroids will drop missiles but the game realises that you haven’t collected any missiles. So they game with get confused and crash.
Can you just solder a battery back on the board?, or is it completely unusable without modding the rom itself +( a possible trace needing to be completed? )

Seriously Nathaniel, a tetrabitgaming pun? That one was kinda trash, no offense, you may have came up with that, but at least you aren't Ink BANDY
It's interesting how Fake Ridley's color scheme would ultimately look very similar to Ridley's later appearances. (color wise)
5:38 dont use the Engage Ridly password. It can destroy your game, and on virtual console can brick your system.
It only crashes the game. It does cause problems (forcing a hard reset on Virtual Console), but Metroid doesn't have any save battery so it's impossible to do permanent damage to a physical game. It definitely won't brick your system.

The Metroid series has left me with one question...
y cant metroid crawl
Because of her suit
Because he Can't!
Top 10 questions scientist still can't awnser
Sprite limitations is the legitimate reason. They were going to make her crawl, but couldn't make a cohesive sprite, so made the morph ball.
And it's not Narpa's Sword, it's Nar Password.
EDIT: You can apparently say it both ways. Who knew?
It can be said either way.
Oh. Really? Sorry.
I figured the accepted meaning of this password was North American Release Password, but I guess it isn't.
Now that you've done the Metroid game, why not go it it's sister series game that uses the same engine, Kid Icarus. When you feel better, that is.
